Book SynopsisPart photo book, part memoir, part oral history project, this volume paints a vivid portrait of queer and trans experiences in rural areas and small towns across the US. In 2013, Rae Garringer embarked on the Country Queers oral history project with a borrowed audio recorder, a flip phone, and a paper atlas in a Subaru Forester with over 160,000 miles on it. Raised on a sheep farm in southeastern West Virginia, they were motivated by an intense frustration with the lack of rural queer stories and the isolation that comes with that absence. “Queers, in all our forms, have always existed,” Garringer writes, “all across this continent since before it was colonized.”  After years as a DIY, minimally funded, community-based oral history project, the work now takes a new form in Country Queers: A Love Lette

Book SynopsisThis summer, Aperture presents a special issue focused on the relationship between photography, urbanism, and activist trajectories from Delhi. The issue explores multiple incarnations of the city’s photographic culture, from O. P. Sharma's experimental works from the 1960s to Aditi Jain’s intimate tableaux of Delhi’s trans community today. Interviews with revered writer Arundhati Roy and with Bangladesh’s best-known photojournalist, Shahidul Alam, illuminate sites of protest in the city and throughout South Asia. Skye Arundhati Thomas revisits Sheba Chhachhi’s feminist staged portraits from the 1980s and ’90s. Featuring a cross section of dynamic image-makers and thinkers, such as Jyoti Dhar, Sunil Gupta, Ishan Tankha, and Anshika Varma, and emerging voices Uzma Mohsin and Prarthna Singh, the issue is a distinctive meditation on regionalism, politics, and identity, through archival and contemporary photographic viewpoints.

KAHL Editions El Cimarron y su Fandango

Book SynopsisDuring the colonial period in the Americas, a Cimarrón was a Black fugitive slave who lived a free life in isolated corners of society. After independence, when slavery was abolished in Mexico, the Afro-descendant population began to group mainly in two parts of the Mexican territory: Veracruz and the Costa Chica. It was in this last one where I had my first encounter with Afro-descendant culture and where I was aware of its importance and invisibility in the history of Mexico; despite being recognized as the third root, it was not until 2015 that the process for its recognition within the constitution began. Driven by after the first encounter I had with the community, I started the research that gave rise to this project, in which photography was the tool that allowed me to translate into images some historical elements that refer to the current construction of the identity of those who are called Afromexicans. El Cimarrón y su Fandango speaks to us in an allegorical way of the past of a Black community and its journey through colonial history, its integration into the territory and its current sense of identity within it. Book Synopsis‘I can’t make my work without the collaboration of the community. Their willingness to allow their story to be told is an important part of what I see.’ Sabelo Mlangeni Many of the stories that Sabelo Mlangeni tells are of communities on the periphery of society. Taking time to build relationships, he gains trust and, eventually, access to inner circles and sacred spaces. Based in South Africa, he has focused on Johannesburg (Big City, 2002–15), as well as the rural areas surrounding his hometown of Driefontein (At Home, 2004–9), and the country towns that ‘freedom and opportunity have somehow skipped past’ (Ghost Town, 2009–11). People are at the heart of Mlangeni’s photography, often those who have been pushed to the so-called ‘margins’, or whose stories could have easily gone untold, such as the street-sweepers of Invisible Women (2006) and the hostel residents in Men Only (2008¬–9). In My Storie (2012) and No Problem (2013) he reveals the legacy of apartheid in the stark divisions that remain between racially segregated communities; and in Country Girls (2003–9) he explores gender roles in portraits ranging from the glamorous to the tender and intimate. Mlangeni’s work seeks to recentre themes of friendship, love and joy in the face of ever-present risk. Above all, his images tell stories of seeking out your people, choosing a family and building a home, wherever you find yourself. The Tate Photography Series is a celebration of international photography in the Tate collection and an introduction to some of the greatest photographers at work today. With the direct involvement of living photographers in collaboration with photography curators, these books showcase the best and most notable images taken across the globe, from city streets to seashores, moving across landscapes and through subcultures, in a visual travelogue of our world. Each book contains a new conversation between curator and photographer and is prefaced with a short introduction. The theme for the first four titles is Community and Solidarity. Also available in this series are: Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen (978-1-84976-800-9) Liz Johnson Artur (978-1-84976-801-6) Sheba Chhachhi (978-1-84976-803-0)

So when Capitán was invited to photograph the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express with its original 1920s carriages and historic routes throughout Europe she couldn't say no. While on board the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Capitán took the most instinctive approach, that of a curious traveller taking a trip with friends. RVB Books Two Donkeys in a War Zone

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe work Two Donkeys in a War Zone finds its source in a video of the U. S. Army available on Youtube. A drone follows an attack against an Isis camp. Between two explosions, the infrared camera briefly highlights two donkeys. This intrusion of two animals unintentionally witnessing human violence had me look for drone strike videos produced by the U. S. , Afghan or British army with moments or details that do not belong to the combat but are instead a part of normal life ', the off- camera's of an asymmetrical war. These photographs of operative videos, supporting military propaganda, show the conflict through the drone's eye. The operator is only looking for his target, but life carries on next to the explosion. These movements, instants of existence, signify humanity. Two donkeys in a war zone is a search, by cropping and subverting operative images, for traces of life inside pictures of death.

Book SynopsisWith this new issue entitled (After)care, The Eyes explores the methods and approaches of photographers who address the most traumatic chapters of our individual and collective histories. After collaborating with SMITH (Transgalactic, 2020) and Johny Pitts (B-Side, 2021), we invited the Spanish artist Laia Abril to take over the content of the magazine. This issue explores the role of responsibility in the process of photography. Many questions are raised in this issue: how do we portray our deepest wounds? What is the significance of vulnerability in the creation of photographs? How can we ensure that the violence of the world is not repeated through the violence of images? This issue of The Eyes features a variety of works and books by artists who all represent, in their own way, a practice of photographic care. The works address subjects as diverse as colonial wars, natural disasters, sexual and gender violence, and disability. Texts and interviews with researchers and artists broaden the reflection on this subject, which is as yet little discussed. • The Water Vole: The Story of One of Britain's

Vertebrate Publishing Ltd The Water Vole: The Story of One of Britain's

Book SynopsisThe water vole is one of Britain's most endangered mammals. A native of the British Isles, and popularised in modern culture as 'Ratty' in Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows, the water vole is a cherished resident of our rivers, canals, streams and ponds. But this once ever-present mammal, like so many others, is now in danger - during the 1990s Britain's water vole population declined by over 80 per cent, and it is now fully protected by law in England and Wales. In The Water Vole, Christine Gregory, author of Brown Hares in the Derbyshire Dales and A River in Time, tells the story of the water vole, past, present and future, principally through its history in the waterways of Derbyshire. Having spent several years studying Derbyshire's water vole population and habitats, and capturing their behaviour intimately through her photography, Christine has developed a relationship with many of the custodians of the county's waterways, who are vital to the survival of the water vole. Decades of painstaking research into the decline of the water vole and the visionary work of conservationists give much cause for hope. Respecting our countryside and wild places and rebuilding the health of our rivers is key: we all have a role to play in the water vole's future.Table of ContentsForeword by Chris Packham; Introduction; Part 1 - The Water Vole; Part 2 - How Water Voles Live; Part 3 - A Protected Species; Part 4 - Derbyshire's Water Voles; Part 5 - History of the Water Vole in Britain; Part 6 - The Otter, the Mink and the Water Vole; Part 7 - The Future for Water Voles; Appendices.

HENI Publishing On the Street: In-Between Architecture

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThere is a layer of the public architecture that has become so familiar that we barely notice it. Street furniture has the capacity to define a city, to locate it and to anchor us within it. Benches, bollards, streetlights, signs, barriers, post boxes, phone booths – they are the physical manifestation of public infrastructure, a network of goods between architecture and the body. In this book, Edwin Heathcote, architecture and design critic of the Financial Times, looks at the cultural impact of street furniture using photography as a measure of how these things have become indispensable components of the cityscape. Based mainly in and on London – but including New York, Paris and Budapest – Heathcote uses history, personal reflection and the lenses of photographers to examine the status of these urban artefacts in both the contemporary imagination and the city streets themselves. It looks at the changing landscape of the cityscape and the way in which street furniture has been adapted to address new technologies, the culture of surveillance and shifts in taste, orthodoxy and material culture. On the Street looks at the language of street furniture reflected through the glaze of photography and contemporary culture. It is a book about the elements of the streetscape which can exert an increasing impact on our interaction with the cities we inhabit.

  • The Absolute Realist: Collected Writings of

Getty Trust Publications The Absolute Realist: Collected Writings of

Book SynopsisThis annotated anthology presents the first English translation of German photographer Albert Renger-Patzsch's collected writings. A towering figure in the history of photography, Albert Renger-Patzsch (1897-1966) has come to epitomize New Objectivity, the neorealist movement in modernist literature, film, and the visual arts recognized as the signature artistic style of Germany's Weimar Republic. Today, his images are regularly exhibited and widely considered key influences on contemporary photographers. Whether they capture geometrically intricate cacti, flooded tidal landscapes, stacks of raw materials, or imposing blast furnace towers, Renger-Patzsch's photographs embody what his peer Hugo Sieker termed "absolute realism," an approach predicated upon the idea that photographers have one task: to exploit the camera's unique capacity to document with uncompromising detail. Not only a photographer, Renger-Patzsch was also an influential and lucid writer who advocated his unique brand of uncompromising realism in almost a half century's worth of articles, essays, lectures, brochures, and unpublished manuscripts addressing photography, technology, and modernity. Drawing on his papers at the Getty Research Institute and other archives, The Absolute Realist unites in one volume this skillful photographer's ideas about the defining visual medium of modernity.Trade Review"Daniel H. Magilow's careful translation and thorough annotation of Albert Renger-Patzsch's writings offer an invaluable invitation: For the very first time, we can discover one of the most influential photographers of the modern era as an eminent theorist and attentive critic. This excellent edition will undoubtedly advance our interest in a period when the art of photography became not just a subject for professionals but an affair for countless amateurs." -Steffen Siegel, editor of First Exposures: Writings from the Beginning of Photography; "Albert Renger-Patzsch has long been known as a giant of early twentieth-century photography. Thanks to Daniel Magilow's deft editing and translations, an English-speaking public can now learn what a savvy critic and theorist of photography he was as well."-Pepper Stetler, author of Stop Reading! Look!: Modern Vision and the Weimar Photographic Book; "As the first complete collection of Albert Renger-Patzsch's writings, The Absolute Realist brings one of the twentieth century's most significant photographers into focus as a writer and theorist. Gorgeously illustrated with Renger-Patzsch's photographs-which are by turns hauntingly beautiful, sublime, and downright funny-Daniel H. Magilow's crisp translations and insightful commentary shed new light on Renger-Patzsch's life and work during Germany's most tumultuous decades."-Elizabeth Otto, Professor of Art History, University at Buffalo (SUNY); "Daniel H. Magilow brings both a wealth of knowledge and precision to The Absolute Realist-qualities that Albert Renger-Patzsch himself prized. In addition to his astute translations, Magilow offers a fresh and nuanced reading of the photographer's most prominent years. He underscores the tension between consistency and breadth across almost a half century of thought in ways that make this collection of the German modernist's writings especially relevant for readers today." -Matthew S. Witkovsky, Richard and Ellen Sandor Chair and Curator of Photography and Media Vice President for Strategic Art Initiatives, Art Institute of Chicago; "For photography lovers as well as researchers, The Absolute Realist: Collected Writings of Albert Renger-Patzsch, 1923-1967, edited and translated by Daniel H. Magilow, is undoubtedly a valuable addition to the bookshelf. Magilow's sensitive translation and knowledgeable scholarly introduction allow rare insight into the German photographer's work and thought during the explosive period of National Socialism, and ultimately make for an exceptionally exciting read. Highly recommended."-Gabriele Conrath-Scholl, Director, Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne

  • Julia Margaret Cameron: A Poetry of Photography

Bodleian Library Julia Margaret Cameron: A Poetry of Photography

Book SynopsisRenowned photographer Julia Margaret Cameron is famous for her evocative portraits of eminent Victorians, including John Herschel, Alfred Tennyson, Henry Taylor, George Frederic Watts, Ellen Terry and Julia Stephen. This study of her work reveals how deeply she was convinced of the poetic possibilities of her medium, particularly its capacity for suggestive rather than literal meaning. She did not get it right on all counts, and her practice violated the aesthetic orthodoxy of the day. But the blurring of the ‘real’ subject before her lens created unparalleled possibilities for a broader pursuit of the sublime and beautiful. Drawing on over 100 items from the photographic collections at the Bodleian Library and Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford, as well as comparative works of art, this book celebrates a collection that illustrates the aesthetic development of the photographer from her earliest pictures to her most poetic photographs. It also includes her own poetry and the key images she created for her extraordinary Illustrations to Tennyson’s Idylls of the King, and Other Poems, demonstrating her fascination with the artistic connection between poetry and photography.Table of Contents1 Julia Margaret Cameron 11 2 The Life Poetic 29 3 Arresting Beauty 37 4 Picturing Poetry 45 5 A Poetry of Photography 53 6 Beautiful Shadows 63 Plates 69

  • Dark Room

    Bodleian Library Dark Room

Book SynopsisGarry Fabian Miller’s Dark Room is a photography book unlike any other. At its heart is the artist’s description of a life lived making pictures between the dark and the light, a deeply personal account woven against the history of photography from the moment of its birth in the 1830s to its decline, and some would say death, in the digital age almost two hundred years later. It is a memoir that reads at times like a manifesto, at others like a confession; a last testament to the dark room as both a site for the imagination, and a physical space for the alchemy that William Henry Fox Talbot once described as ‘a little bit of magic realised’. Dark Room charts Miller’s work over five decades, shifting from a camera-based practice in early career to the abstract picture making for which he has become internationally recognised, working without a camera to experiment with the possibilities of light as both medium and subject. At its core is the relationship with nature and place that has so sustained his way of life, and specifically with his home on Dartmoor and the cycle of daily walks that have been at the core of his practice for thirty years. The book also features an essay on Miller’s work by his friend the potter and writer Edmund de Waal and technical notes by Martin Barnes, senior photography curator of the Victoria and Albert Museum.Trade ReviewFabian Miller’s works dwell majestically, inviting pause, tempting immersion, evading final qualification. These rare encounters remind us of quite how magical the photographic arts are. * Amateur Photographer *We see a lot of books here at Amateur Photographer, and it’s safe to say that while many of them are excellent, it’s rare for one to give such pause for thought as Dark Room...to sit down and absorb the book, front-to back, is a fantastic experience that is hard to beat. * Amateur Photographer *Table of ContentsDark Room 13 Farewell to an Idea: Edmund de Waal 226 Catalogue 242 Technical Notes: Martin Barnes 256 Further Reading 259 Biography 260 Acknowledgements 262
