Park Books House Tour: Views of the Unfurnished Interior
Book Synopsis240cm is the standard distance between floor and ceiling in residential buildings: the height of the void we inhabit. In its precision, and its emptiness, the number reflects contemporary interior architecture's condition. In a series of essays, House Tour explores an interior that is both familiar and seemingly uninhabited, critically celebrating a peculiar genre of representation, the architectural photography of an unfurnished interior. The authors - including anthropologists, architecture theorists and art historians - consider the ubiquitous contemporary apartment from an eye-level view, foregrounding the appearance and material presence of the architectural shell. They start out from photographs of unfurnished interiors found on the websites of leading Swiss architecture firms. They have a blank, labyrinthine appearance, with walls intersecting at oblique angles and exits seemingly leading nowhere, and show featureless rooms with seamless transitions between surfaces. House Tour offers answers to the quest for a new language that adequately describes this architecture.

Prestel Photography: The Whole Story
Book SynopsisUnlike many other artistic media, photography’s origins are well documented, as are its ever-changing technologies and applications. Written by an international team of experts, this definitive history of photography looks at every step of the field’s dynamic evolution, period by period and movement by movement. Each key genre is chronologically presented within its social, economic, and political context, along with close analysis of specially selected works that best exemplify the characteristics of the period. With more than 500 gorgeous examples in black and white and color, the book explores in-depth virtually every aspect of the medium since its first public demonstration in 1839 to the latest innovations: from early portraits and the birth of photojournalism to travel photography and the mapping of the world; from the Pictorialists to the avant-garde; from celebrity and fashion to documentary and landscape. Along the way readers will learn why some photographs are considered iconic, and why the medium as an art form continues to challenge and enthrall us.Trade Review"Extensively researched and attractively produced, this guide is highly recommended for those who want to be versed on what photography actually may be, and has been." —Rangefinder"[A] lively and informative analysis." —Choice"With more than 500 gorgeous examples in black and white and color, the book explores in-depth virtually every aspect of the medium [photography] since its first public demonstration in 1839 to the latest innovations."—Make Your Ideas Art

Prestel Libraries: Candida Höfer
Book SynopsisThis striking book shows the world's most beautiful libraries through Candida Höfer's mesmerizing photographs. No one photographs spaces quite like Candida Höfer and no one has captured better the majesty, stillness, and eloquence of libraries. Traveling around the world, Höfer shows the exquisite beauty to be found in order, repetition, and form--rows of books, lines of desks, soaring shelves, and even stacks of paper create patterns that are both hypnotic and soothing. Photographed with a large-format camera and a small aperture, these razor-sharp images of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, the Escorial in Spain, Villa Medici in Rome, the Hamburg University library, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris, and the Museo Archeologico in Madrid, to name a few, communicate more than just the superb architecture. Glowing with subtle color and natural light, Höfer's photographs, while devoid of people, shimmer with life and remind us again and again that libraries are more than just repositories for books. Umberto Eco's essay about his own attachment to libraries is the perfect introduction to an otherwise wordless, but sublimely reverent journey.Trade Review“…each large, full-page image compels its viewer to pause and simply stare. Each library is so different, and yet we cannot help but be drawn to them.”—Fine Books & Collections Magazine

Prestel An Alternative History of Photography
Book SynopsisThe real history of photography is a vast collection of inter- connected stories stretching from East Asia to West Africa, from New Zealand to Uzbekistan. It parallels acknowledged greats with forgotten masters, and lesser-known works with regional champions. It is a complex interplay of fine art, scientific, anthropological, documentary, and amateur traditions forged by women and men alike. Drawn from the extraordinary Solander Collection, this pioneering, alternative history of photography is based on principles of diversity and democracy, allowing famous works to be seen with fresh eyes, and giving more obscure works the platform they deserve. Images by Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Man Ray, Ansel Adams, and Edward Weston are seen alongside those of Helen Stuart and John Lindt, early, self- trained practitioners Lady Augusta Mostyn and Major Francis Greeley, and African studio photographers Sanlé Sory, Michel Kameni, and Malick Sidibé. It contains many rarities and “firsts” and spans photography’s early decades with linchpin works by Sir John Herschel, William Henry Fox Talbot, Hippolyte Bayard, and Julia Margaret Cameron. Contemporary in outlook, visually captivating, and with contributions from leading curators and photo historians, this book will prove essential reading for those looking for an introduction to the field, as well as informed readers looking for more complete knowledge.

Taschen GmbH Peter Lindbergh. On Fashion Photography. 40th Ed.
Book SynopsisIt was on a Malibu beach in 1988 that Peter Lindbergh shot the White Shirts series, images now known the world over. Simple yet seminal, the photographs introduced us to Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Rachel Williams, Karen Alexander, Tatjana Patitz, and Estelle Lefébure. This marked the beginning of an era that redefined beauty, and Lindbergh would go on to alter the landscape of fashion photography for the decades that followed. This edition gathers more than 300 images from forty years of Lindbergh's career. It traces the German photographer's cinematic inflections and humanist approach, which produced images at once seductive and introspective. In 1980 Rei Kawakubo asked Lindbergh to shoot a Commes des Garçons campaign, one of his earlier forays into commercial photography. Kawakubo gave him carte blanche. The following years brought forth collaborations with the most venerated names in fashion and resulted in a relationship of mutual reverence; Lindbergh's respect for some of the greatest designers of our time is palpable in his portraits. Among those photographed are Azzedine Alaïa, Giorgio Armani, Alber Elbaz, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Thierry Mugler, Yves Saint Laurent, Jil Sander, and Yohji Yamamoto. Widely considered a pioneer in his field, Lindbergh shirked the industry standards of beauty and instead celebrated the essence and individuality of his subjects. He was pivotal to the rise of models such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Mariacarla Boscono, Lara Stone, Claudia Schiffer, Amber Valletta, Nadja Auermann, and Kristen McMenamy. Lindbergh's reach also extended across Hollywood and beyond: Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling, Richard Gere, Isabelle Huppert, Nicole Kidman, Madonna, Brad Pitt, Catherine Deneuve, and Jeanne Moreau all appear in his works. From the picture chosen by Anna Wintour as the cover of her first Vogue issue to the legendary shot of Tina Turner on the Eiffel Tower, it is never the clothes, celebrity, or glamour that takes center stage in a Lindbergh photograph. Each picture conveys the humanity of its subject with a serene melancholy that is uniquely and unmistakably Lindbergh. From the outset of his career, Lindbergh was well-known in the contemporary art world, where his photographs were exhibited in galleries long before they appeared in magazines. This edition features an updated introduction adapted from an interview in 2016, allowing a glimpse behind Lindbergh's lens, where the photographer recounts his early collaborations, the tenuous relationship between commercial and fine art, and the power of storytelling.Trade ReviewAn indispensable volume for every fashionista's bookshelf. * Cosmopolitan *Peter Lindbergh, renowned for his alternately cinematic and naturalistic portraits of models and screen sirens, aimed to demonstrate that there is beauty in age and, more than that, audacity. * The New York Times *Throughout the book's 500-plus pages, the affection Lindbergh has always had for his subjects is constantly apparent. His photos have always favored personality over polish. * The New York Times *

RM Verlag SL Chile The Photographic archive 197374
Book SynopsisThe monumental undertaking of sifting through an archive of over 8000 photographs was made and more than 300 photographs were selected, many of them unpublished until now. In 1973, Dutch photojournalist Chas Gerretsen spent nine months in Santiago, Chile. His historic photographs cover the last year of the Allende government and the violent military coup that led to the Pinochet regime. In 1974, Chas returned twice to Chile to record the changes in the country. Fifty years after the coup d'état in Chile, Gerretsen says, I hope for the images to become part of the historical and political memory of Chile, and that this book will serve as a reminder of the past and help future generations to avoid making the same mistakes.

Urim Publications American Interests in the Holy Land Revealed in
Book SynopsisJewish life in the holy land reawakened during the 19th century, but photographs from the period are scarce. Collecting images from the archives of the Library of Congress, the Ottoman Imperial Archives, the NY Public Library, university and church libraries worldwide, and family albums, Lenny Ben-David provides a unique visual history of the American fascination and dedication to a Jewish national home in the Holy Land. Short photo essays include details such as why Lincoln wanted to visit Jerusalem, how the U.S. Navy saved the Jews of Palestine in 1915, why the Chief Rabbi of Palestine visited the White House in 1924, where Mark Twain stayed in Jerusalem, and much more.Trade Review"I congratulate Lenny Ben-David on the publication of this major work illustrating over a century of American support for the Jews of the Holy Land. For over 30 years, Lenny and I have cooperated on projects in our respective professional lives. His knowledge and experience dealing with U.S.-Israel relations, Middle East affairs, and Jewish history in Eretz Yisrael is rich and vast." -Ambassador Dr. Dore GoldLenny Ben-Davids essays and collection of more than 100 photographs portray the special relationship between the United States and the Jewish population of the Holy Land from a unique and memorable perspective. -Senator Joseph I. Lieberman"From the beginning to the end -- U.S. Senators visiting the Western Wall in the 1930's on the cover, to young Bobby Kennedy reporting on the 1948 Israeli Independence war in the last chapter -- Lenny Ben-David's essays and collection of 100 photographs portray the special relationship between the United States and the Jewish population of the Holy Land from a unique and memorable perspective. American Interests in the Holy Land Revealed in Early Photographs exposes the secrets that would otherwise have been hidden away by history: Chief Rabbi Abraham Kook visiting President Coolidge in the White House, the U.S. Navy's evacuation of 6,000 Jews from Jaffa in 1915 before the Turks could expel them, the visit to a synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem by Lincoln's Secretary of State William Seward in 1872, and more. I first met Lenny Ben-David 20 years ago when he was an Israeli diplomat in Washington. With this wonderful book, he continues to strengthen the bonds between the United States and Israel." Senator Joseph I. Lieberman"Remarkable photos by both travelers and immigrants appear in Lenny Ben-David's American Interests in the Holy Land Revealed in Early Photographs from 1840 to 1940 . Drawing on collections from New England to New Zealand -- some of which languished for years in attics -- the author brings together rare images of American and Jewish activity in the land of Israel . . . . this book resembles the best kind of overseas tour, meandering through local streets, picking up fascinating facts, and encountering eccentric natives. Readers will surely want to revisit the era for a deeper engagement." Elka Weber, Segula Magazine"... this book is more than a collection of images. It also demonstrates the deep connection that American Christians have felt toward the land of Israel and their abiding sympathy for the return of the Jewish people to their homeland." Aaron Leibel, jewishaz.com"This fascinating coffee-table size book has large black and white and color photographs of American tourists, government officials, American navy crewmen, and members of the U.S. Congress who visited Palestine before the birth of the state of Israel. Each photograph is accompanied by several pages of explanatory text; many of the pictures are of little-known people and curious events that are part of Israeli history This book is highly recommended for all libraries."
