Canongate Books See/Saw: Looking at Photographs
Book Synopsis'Wide-ranging and eclectic' TLS'Seductively curious' Observer'A visual and intellectual journey' HeraldSee/Saw is an illuminating history of how photographs frame and change our perspectives. Starting from single images by the world's most important photographers - from Eugène Atget to Alex Webb - Geoff Dyer shows us how to read a photograph, as he takes us through a series of close readings that are by turns moving, funny, prescient and surprising.Trade ReviewIn these seductively curious essays, Dyer scrutinises images and photographers, unearthing hidden truths and a sense of the uncanny * * Observer, Book of the Day * *Fascinating . . . Dyer is not merely a fine prose stylist but a writer of knowingly stylish prose . . . This is both a beautifully written and a beautiful book -- Stuart Kelly * * Scotsman * *The acclaimed essayist and novelist is also one of the world's greatest writers on photography . . . Reading this book is, simply put, a pleasurable experience * * Irish Times * *Fascinating . . . The reader is taken on a visual and intellectual journey, so that once you have read Dyer's words, you return to the photograph he describes, seeing it afresh and in ways that you might never had considered . . . Compelling * * Herald * *A beautifully written book on photography * * Scotland on Sunday * *Wide-ranging and eclectic . . . Dyer is at his best when he stays close to the images, teasing out their meanings with astute observations or poetic readings . . . Fascinating . . . Insightful * * TLS * *Dyer turns his erudite eye on some of the most important photographers of the past 150 years in his latest collection of essays . . . Dyer follows in the footsteps of John Berger and Susan Sontag with this guide on how to "read a photograph", decoding and deciphering images by August Sander, Dayanita Singh, William Eggleston and Vivian Maier, among others * * Art Newspaper * *A marvel . . . There is a great chewy joy to reading Dyer - in See/Saw, cheeky stretched conceits are applied to tasty ideas as he operates surgically on the heart of a concept with an apposite quote from someone relevant or learned. He has a talent for contracting the long and insightful into the short and insightful . . . Fascinating * * Dublin Review of Books * *Dyer is a brilliant writer fascinated by photography and the ideas that pulse through it . . . What makes Dyer's prose so readable is not simply that he is a knowledgeable and astute critic, but that he is able to shape sophisticated ideas into engaging prose . . . Beautifully presented, this is an insightful collection of articles that deepens our understanding of the subtle power of photography * * Black and White Photography Review * *Thoroughly affecting . . . See/Saw is a collection best dipped into and savoured in short bursts . . . [A] diverse catalogue of pathos, humour and intrigue . . . Throughout this collection he proves to be a master weaver of information and stories . . . See/Saw demonstrates that words, much like the photographs they are describing, can lead to elongation and excavation of our own experiences. Dalton Watson Fine Books Bentley Mark VI RType
Book SynopsisA comprehensive celebration of the Bentley Mk VI. The Bentley Mk VI was the best-selling model produced by Rolls-Royce Ltd when motor car production resumed at Crewe after World War II. This model later evolved into the R-Type and the Bentley Continental, as well as a Rolls-Royce counterpart, the Silver Dawn. The most radical post-war change was the fitting of standardized pressed steel bodies, though some 20% of Bentley Mk VIs and somewhat lesser percentages of the R-Type and Silver Dawn models, as well as 100% of the Bentley Continentals, continued the pre-war practice of having custom bodies from such coachbuilders as Park Ward, Hooper, and H.J. Mulliner. Comprehensive histories of these and other coachbuilders are included in this book, and all cars fitted with coachbuilt bodies are listed. This is a companion book to Martin Bennett''s Rolls-Royce: the Post-War Phantoms IV V VI and Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith.

Oro Editions Prague Revisited
Book SynopsisThis book of over 200 photographs by Bernis and Peter von zur Muehlen covers the sweep of Prague's history from World War II to the Velvet Revolution. The first chapter, illustrated by his mother's black and white snapshots of the city, is an account of Peter's life in Prague as a young boy during the months leading up to the end of World War II and of his family's narrow escape days before the Red Army entered the city. The following chapters describe four visits by Bernis and Peter between 1985 and 1992, an epoch that saw Czechoslovakia's transformation from Communist dictatorship to the restoration of democracy. The images reveal not only a glorious city, but also the many less prominent sites that give Prague its unique charm. Haunting images of the Old Jewish Cemetery remind the reader of the turbulent history of the Jews, nearly exterminated by the Nazis. One chapter traces the evolution of the Lennon Wall, a famous symbol of Prague's long struggle for freedom. Lively accounts of the photographers' travel experiences document a city slowly coming to terms with its own history. An afterword by Ori Z. Soltes, noted lecturer and author of twenty books, illuminates the city's Judaeo-Christian history.

Book SynopsisRomain Laprade is a French photographer. After his studies, he first worked at Vogue Paris magazine as a graphic designer and then at Holiday magazine, but his passion for photography, which has inspired him since the age of 15, finally led him to make it his job. The photographs of Romain Laprade evolved in a few years into a subtle and intriguing visual signature. His style stands out by focusing on banal details that he transforms into iconic images. His warm tones, his sense of composition and his solar work also interest brands in the constant quest for novelties and help to make them recognised through various publications. (Aesop, Rimowa, Mr Porter, Hermes, Isabel Marant, ...). Romain Laprade freezes lines and surfaces through his own aesthetic and photographic vocabulary, often drawn from modernist architecture. The anodyne details, minimalist compositions, marked lights, which he accumulated over the last 5 years in many photographs, are capable of providing an exquisite and p

Taschen GmbH Strandbeest. The Dream Machines of Theo Jansen
Book SynopsisFor seven years, photographer and artist Lena Herzog followed the evolution of a new kinetic species. Intricate as insects but with bursts of equine energy, the “Strandbeests,” or “beach creatures,” are the creation of Dutch artist Theo Jansen, who has been working for nearly two decades to generate these new life-forms that move, and even survive, on their own. Set to roam the beaches of Holland, the Strandbeests pick up the wind in their gossamer wings and spring, as if by metamorphosis, into action. As if it were blood, not the breeze, running through their delicate forms, they quiver, cavort, and trot against the sun and sea, pausing to change direction if they sense loose sand or water that might destabilize their movement. Coinciding with a traveling exhibition, Herzog’s photographic tribute captures Jansen’s menagerie in a meditative black and white, showcasing Jansen’s imaginative vision, as well as the compelling intersection of animate and inanimate in his creatures. The result is a work of art in its own right and a mesmerizing encounter not only with a very surrealist brand of marvelous, but also with whole new ideas of existence.Trade Review“They really do appear to be alive. Purposeful, resolute. They don’t fall into the uncanny valley that afflicts so many other robotic assaults on the absolutely lifelike… they almost seem to evince a soul.” * The New York Times Magazine *“Spectacular, mechanical, philosophical beauty all rolled up in the talents of a man who is both artist and artisan in the broader sense of both words.” * Forbes *

Chronicle Books The Stahl House: Case Study House #22: The Making
Book SynopsisThe Stahl House: Case Study House #22, The Making of a Modernist Icon is the official autobiography of this world renowned architectural gem by the family that made it their home. Considered one of the most iconic and recognizable examples of mid-century modern homes in the world, it was first envisioned by the owner’s Buck and Carlotta Stahl, designed by architect Pierre Koenig, and immortalized by photographer Julius Shulman. This 1960 glass-and-steel home in the Hollywood Hills has come to embody the idealism of a generation in search of the American dream. As one of the Case Study Houses designed between 1945 and 1966 under the vision of John Entenza and ARTS & ARCHITECTURE magazine, this was an affordable yet progressive design experiment to address the postwar housing shortage. The result—a two-bedroom, 2,200-square-foot house with glass walls that disappear into a 270-degree panorama of Los Angeles—became Koenig's pièce de résistance. The Stahl House broke rules, defied building codes that discouraged building on cliffs, and expanded the possibilities of residential architecture. The glass walls blurred the boundary between indoors and outdoors. The building seemed to merge with the city itself, the lines of the structure aligning with the geometry of the city's gridded streets. "Los Angeles becomes an extension of the house and vice versa," Koenig said. "The house is just a part of the city." The book shares the never-before-told inside story by the Stahl family's adult children who grew up there and still graciously give home tours to fans from around the world. Through extensive research and interviews, historical information and personal photos are featured. This includes Buck Stahl's initial vision of the home with his own DIY schematic model for how to build on the complicated site. It also includes blueprints, floor plans, and sketches by Pierre Koenig, as well as Julius Shulman’s renowned photographs. Additionally, photographs of the house used in high-end, fashion ad campaigns and film and television are also included, cementing The Stahl House’s prominence in contemporary culture.

Our Selves explores the connections between photography, feminism, civil rights, Indigenous sovereignty and queer liberationSpanning more than 100 years of photography, the works in Our Selves range from a turn-of-the-century photograph of racially segregated education in the United States, by Frances Benjamin Johnston, to a contemporary portrait celebrating Indigenous art forms, by the Chemehuevi artist Cara Romero. As the title of this volume suggests, Our Selves affirms the creative and political agency of women artists. teNeues Publishing UK Ltd The Watch Book: More than Time Volume II
Book SynopsisVolume II of The Watch Book follows on the successful and comprehensive earlier volume with a magnificently illustrated book about the additional functions and refinements of wristwatches. For centuries, so-called "complications" - any feature of a mechanical timepiece beyond the display of hours, minutes and seconds - have embodied the crowning glory of fine mechanical watchmaking. Among the earliest of these are alarm clocks and calendar movements. Moon phase displays have also been known for several centuries. Striking movements can be considered among the most complex and technically elaborate additional functions, while finishing techniques such as skeletonising, which is mainly done by hand, also characterise the high art of watchmaking. This superbly illustrated volume by watch expert and historian Gisbert L. Chronicle Books Still Life
Book SynopsisStill Life is a photographic celebration of the work of New York City-based florist, artist, and photographer Doan Ly and her studio, a.p. bio. Ly's stunning work elevates floral design to an art form. While photographs of her floral vignettes are reminiscent of old masters' still life paintings, her playful and innovative use of color and lighting are decidedly contemporary. This spectacular collection of Ly's own exquisite photographs of her still life creations is unlike any other floral design book. Still Life captures Ly's unique and inspiring aesthetic, which has drawn a dedicated following on social media. An engaging interview with Ly brings insight into her creative process and what compels her to continually explore the ethereal and poetic possibilities of her work. As Ly says, I want to be caught off guard. I want to see anew. I want to experience a quiet moment that is larger than life. I want to learn something, but mostly, I want to share beauty and bring joy.
