  • Circus Girl

Seagull Books London Ltd Circus Girl

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisCircuses provide surreal, fantastic entertainment. At times magical and at others chilling, the circus is a world of fantasy and spectacle for the viewer, but for the performer, a career in the circus often brings with it a nomadic, lonely life. In "Circus Girl", photographer Saibal Das captures beautiful and unusual images of circus girls, photographs which evoke this sense of darkness and resignation that underlies the otherworldly feats they perform under the big top. For instance, in one photograph, a circus girl whose act involves a lioness is seen sitting in front of a mirror putting on her makeup. The lioness that she usually whips in the ring stands behind her, her paw touching the girl's shoulder affectionately. But both wear a solemn look. In another, the girl sits on her props, staring silently at the snack packets strewn on the ground. The giant marquee is empty. Internationally renowned mime artist Nola Rae provides a haunting accompanying text that poetically comments on the transient wanderings of the circus performers who often yearn for a conventional family life while donning their costumes and taking hold of the trapeze. Rae gives voice to the circus girls, articulating the thoughts too often hidden by the brilliant illusion of stage lights.

Book SynopsisThis series is each devoted to a decade of British life and contains around 300 photographs which were hand-picked by PA Photos' own archivists. Most have lain unseen since they were first used as news pictures and each image has been scanned especially, many from glass plates, to ensure the best possible quality of reproduction. These cameras have recorded for posterity everything in their view and each picture tells an eloquent tale, of occurrences big and small, which have shaped the people and the face of Britain today.PA Photos is the photography arm of the PA Group, which also owns the The Press Association, the UK's national news agency. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis title offers a beautifully produced tribute to the 2000s, featuring images straight from the archives of the "Press Association". This illuminating collection offers fascinating images that depict both major historical events and smaller, but no less significant, occurrences. It presents a beautiful gift idea, either as a stand-alone title or part of this invaluable series. It is part of a series giving an insight into major historical events in Britain from 2000 to 2009, plus smaller occurrences that had equal, if not greater, significance for the people of Britain. Amid a climate of flooding, heat wave, gales and global warming, cannabis is downgraded, cigarettes are banned from public places, and knife crime escalates. An Internet and telecommunications boom spawns social media microblogging and reality TV gives 'fifteen minutes of fame' to ordinary people. From the onset of foot and mouth in the first year of the new millennium to concerns over swine flu towards the end of the decade; from the anti-capitalist riots of 2000 to the collapse of major banks and the credit crunch in 2008. This book contains around 300 photographs, hand-picked by PA Photos' own archivists. Many of these images have lain unseen since they were used as news pictures when first taken.

Book SynopsisBritain is a nation of great men and women who are admired for their courage in the face of adversity, their outstanding achievements and their unstinting noble qualities. Such popular heroes come from all walks of life and count among their ranks explorers, inventors, soldiers, sailors, airmen, scientists, musicians, sportsmen and women, actors, artists, politicians - and the ordinary folk and unsung heroes who are revered by others because of a selfless act or personal sacrifice. With a wry nod to British eccentricity, also celebrated here are the larger-than-life characters that have won the hearts of the public, including plucky racehorses, loyal canines and loveable celebrities from the small screen. This book is a visual record of some of the foremost personalities in Britain to be lauded with the title 'Great', told in almost 300 images from the vast archives of the Press Association, whose photographers have been on hand over the last century to capture these personalities for posterity.

Book SynopsisA photographic reverie of lost histories and forgotten North American landscapesThis compelling, 464-page photobook presents an intuitive selection of images extracted from a collection of photographic postcards mostly produced in the early part of the last century and largely from North America. Fragmented images combine to elicit memories from forgotten histories and encourage the reader to conjure stories of past endeavor and adventures.Begun in the early months of the pandemic, the book expresses the vision of its editor, David Thomson. He writes of his approach: Juxtapositions took shape. Intuition reigned. The play of natural light struck hard. The chiaroscuro of plein air' landscape remained a strand beneath. The countenances within the compositions ran a gamut of emotion. A sense of bewilderment was coupled by wonderment; the nature of people and their ways of being.

Trolley Books Libera Me: book 1

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis photographic story is a personal exploration of loss, separation, heaven and hell. Inspired by Pirandello's play Six Characters in Search of an Author, Majoli elaborates on the notion that we are all actors of life. Libera Me is divided into three chapters. Chapter one, Persona, consists of individual black and white photographic portraits, whilst chapter two, Libera Me, is a surrealist composition of Latvian landscapes, with which Majoli explores the idea of paradise. The third chapter, Lacrimosa, is in colour, and emerges from Majoli's exploration of the memorials of the genocide in Rwanda, and their associations with the idea of hell. This large format book focuses on the first chapter, Persona. In the twenty portraits only the face is visible, lit with a light that always shines from above, as if it were a divine light. Dramatic in nature, they suggest the notion of judgement, the question of what awaits us after we die and the idea that we are all going to be judged on the day of our death.

Book SynopsisThe theme of Margaret M. De Lange's second book is one of loneliness. It is a personal documentary, which follows people close to her as well as some that she has met only briefly, and the solitude they encounter. As she says: Being lonely is not the same as being alone. The loneliness we experience when surrounded by people is the loneliness we try our hardest to hide. We all have aspects to ourselves that we try not to display. Aspects which are personal and vulnerable. On an unconscious level, I think I look for these sides to myself in the people around me. Those I'm close to, but also strangers I only have fleeting encounters with. It is when I see myself that I take my photographs. These people become my mirrors; my way of showing those parts of me I'm trying to keep hidden. My insecurities, dreams and longings. My happiness and sorrows, victories and downfalls. My loneliness.

Book SynopsisYes To A Rosy Future documents Swiss photographer Nicolas Righetti's stay in Syria in 2012, captioned with statements from Bashar al'Assad's official speeches. An afterword by Christian Bråndle, director of the Zurich Design Museum, considers the relationship between the ruler and his people and how his image is used to hint at his omnipresence a smiling face, always there for his loyal subjects. It was an overwhelming sight that met photographer Nicolas Righetti when he arrived in Dasmascus in May 2007. Preparations for the coming election were in full swing and the city was smothered with one image, that of the unopposed President, Bashar al'Assad, who was to be re-elected another seven years. From monumental portraits to publicity handouts in both public and private spaces, the ruler of Syria became unavoidable and the message was clear; 'Yes To A Rosy Future' was emblazoned on campaign posters everywhere. Yes To A Rosy Future documents Righetti's stay in Syria and presents the photos taken during this time, captioned with statements from Bashar al'Assad's official speeches. An afterword by Christian Bråndle, director of the Zurich Design Museum, considers the relationship between the ruler and his people and how his image is used to hint at his omnipresence a smiling face, always there for his loyal subjects. With the Arab Spring and the protests that took place in Syria starting in early 2011, this relationship was questioned and tested. One thing is certain Bashar al'Assad is still there for his people, whether they want him to be or not. The propagandistic images and slogans of 2007 have taken on a new relevance: images of triumphant power and his obdurate statements reveal a completely different portrait, that of the smiling face of repression.

Book SynopsisIt was the best of times it was the worst of times.' Maligned, misunderstood and fetishized the 1980's stands as the decade when post-modern life began in the west, and London was at the epicenter of this shift. An explosion of creativity took place against a backdrop of radical social change. London became a city of tribes. The vast youth culture categories of the preceding decades shattered into shards. It was the decade that sub-culture as a way of life reached it's zenith before giving way to it's inevitable scene surfing conclusion. Ridgers documented this cultural moment obsessively. Punks, post-punks, cyber-punks, gothic punks, mods, hard mods, Trojan skins, racist skins, ska, reggae, dub, early electronica, synth pop, acid house, happy hardcore, Blitz Kids, New Romantics, Hip-Hop, Rap, Electro, Break Beat, Techno, Rave these were all sub-cultural spaces with scenes attached in London in the 1980's. Unlike now, subcultures in the 1980's were not casual playthings they were a way of life for their participants. They inspired profound loyalty. They were a beautiful a doomed flowering of the hope for a better world. Derek Ridger's exquisite street portrait photography has captured this creative decade beautifully.

It reminds me of the value of great photography and the enduring power of the still image. Tony Chambers. Editor in Chief, Wallpaper Magazine. The photographs are stunning. When we first met I remember being intrigued by him as a man and his past. I felt strongly that he had captured the real me, at a very important time in my career. I've worked with him many times and it's such a pleasure. Ewan McGregor. Actor. David's work is a true reflection of him, curious, warm, garrulous and open. His view of the world is frank, honest and always positive. He is a romantic who interacts with his subjects on equal terms. The richness of his colour and the structure of his black and white work is something many photographers could learn from. Whilst a sense of unhurried patience underlies all his images. There is a lack of artifice which comes from having looked closely at what he photographs that I love. Mike Trow. Picture Editor, British Vogue. David captures the beauty and soul in all his work whether it is portraits or landscapes. He is a genius. Wendy Hinton, Photography Editor. Harrods Magazine. His work is characterised by a classic - or perhaps more precisely, modernist - finely tuned and apparently simple sensitivity to form, through lighting and composition. Beautiful and impeccably crafted, without gimmicks or trickery, his photographs transcend current style and are timeless in their depiction of the human condition. Robin Gillanders, Reader in Photography. Edinburgh Napier University. The thing I like about David's photos are the empty spaces. There's a romantic desolation about them. They're very peaceful. Tracey Emin. Artist. David Eustace is a seismograph - his portraits have a way of exposing what lies beneath the surface. Trevor Lunn. Creative Director. If great photography has the power to emotionally move the viewer then I class David as one of the greats. Enjoy this book and discover for yourselves what truly inspiring photography is all about. Book SynopsisSouth Asians have lived in Britain for centuries. From the first trade conducted between the two nations along the Silk Route to the adoption of Chicken Tikka Masala as a national dish, the ongoing mutual exchange of cultures continues to flourish today. Asian Britain vividly charts Britain's process of coming to terms with the historic realities of its culturally diverse past and present. This extraordinary photographic history draws upon culture, film, music, the military, business, the suffragist movement and the different phases of historic settlement of Asian migrants from the subcontinent, the Caribbean and East Africa. Personalities from the arts, business, politics and sport appear alongside the pioneers - the first female law student at Oxford, the first Indian RAF pilots, the first Asian MP - and of equal significance are the experiences and history of the ordinary immigrants.Trade Review'Fascinating - [This] breathtaking book - sets out to chart a fascinating and important untold social history.' Book SynopsisPhotographs have played a crucial role in shaping perceptions of nuclear weapons and nuclear energy. In Camera Atomica, art historian John O’Brian explores the intimate relationship between photography and nuclear events to uncover how the camera lens has shaped public perceptions of the atomic age and its anxieties. Bringing together both vintage and contemporary photographs that have recorded and, in certain instances, provided motivation for the production of nuclear events, O’Brian travels through history — from the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 to the triple meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi in 2011. In this vivid volume, readers will encounter more than 200 images that simultaneously document and raise questions about the contradictory roles of photography during this period. Included are Hiromitso Toyosaki and Shomei Tomatsu’s photographs of hibakusha (individuals exposed to radiation from atomic bombs), David McMillan’s photographs at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and Sandy Skoglund’s darkly humorous Radioactive Cats, along with photographs by Nancy Burson, Edward Burtynsky, Carol Condé and Karl Beveridge, Kenji Higuchi, Richard Misrach, Weegee, and many others.
