  • The Lilliput Press Ltd The Aran Islands: Another World

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis portfolio of 160 stunning photographs, drawn from the Aran Islands since the early 1960s, chronicles and records the daily life of the islanders: their seasons, harvests and festivities; their schooling, religion and politics; their fishing, folkways and pastimes. Photographic sequences depict events in the Aran year – St Bridget’s Eve (1 February) and St John’s Eve (11 June), the blessing of the currachs, the cead (a form of hurling) – and portraits of the Aran poets, Sean Keating the painter, and the coffin-makers of Inis Meain. These timeless, crystalline images by a master-photographer reconstitute and preserve a unique, largely vanished way of life in the most majestic of settings on Ireland’s western seaboard. An introductory essay, ‘The Light before the Object: Bill Doyle, Photographer’, by broadcaster and documentary film-maker Muirís Mac Conghail, accompanies the photographs.

  • Calum Colvin: Ossian-fragments of Ancient Poetry

National Galleries of Scotland Calum Colvin: Ossian-fragments of Ancient Poetry

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisCalum Colvin is one of Scotland's most innovative and exciting contemporary photographers. In his work he creates a kaleidoscope of figures, symbols and ideas, which are blended into the most vibrant and stimulating images. With this project, Colvin has explored the mysterious world of Ossian. Ossian, a third century Celtic bard, was first discovered by James MacPherson, himself a poet but also a cultural entrepreneur and an adventurer. MacPherson published the ballads of Ossian in the years after 1760. These mournful elegies to the lost world of the Gael became a cause celebre in Enlightenment society. On the one hand, MacPherson was hailed as the discoverer and translator of a "Celtic Homer", while on the other, he was accused by Samuel Johnson, of having perpetrated a cruel fraud on the public. While this dispute rumbled on, the poems of Ossian became feted throughout Europe and America and touched the art of poets, writers and composers such as Burns, Goethe, Longfellow and Mendelssohn. Colvin has taken these events as the basis for his surreal meditation on contemporary culture. Through the ideas and associations inspired by MacPherson's Ossian, he has produced a discourse on national identity, "authenticity" and the human psyche. It is characteristic of Colvin that he has successfully explored these difficult themes while simultaneously creating accessible, provocative photographs.

Book SynopsisJane Brettle captures the diversity of Scotland's Police forces in this group of work by highlighting the differences in geography, population density and community across the country and the challenges that these bring. This group of photographs clearly shows the extent of the Scottish Police's work including community liaison, armed response, forensics, detective and mounted personnel. Brettle captures the individuality of the officers and support staff in their working environment. In addition, in two essays, the work of Jane Brettle is discussed as well as the development of contemporary policing in Scotland. Included in the book are personal captions written by the officers and support staff who were involved in this innovative project.

Whittles Publishing The Wind in My Face: On the Trail of a Nature

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA well-known naturalist, forester and nature photographer, Don MacCaskill died in May, 2000 while out for a walk in the forest he loved, his camera as ever at the ready. Faced with a collection of between three and four thousand transparences, his wife, Bridget felt that so many of these were outstanding examples of both a gifted photographer and a dedicated naturalist, that some should be made available to others interested in similar pursuits. It quickly became apparent that they also formed a kind of photographic autobiography of the man himself, his concern for nature and his need to try to demonstrate, through his photography, the responsibility of Man to that natural world of which he is a part. Don's 'mate' in most of his endeavours (and a keen naturalist herself), Bridget has put together a book of stunning photography, with text that gives the reader a delightful taste of Nature throughout the seasons and an appreciation of the nature photographer's tasks over the year. The whole work is complemented by the poetry of Jim Crumley, each poem inspired by one of Don's photographs. 'He was a professional forester and a brilliant self-taught naturalist and wildlife photographer. Above all, from our point of view, he could communicate his enthusiasm to others...a huge portfolio of nature photographs of the highest quality. Now we are able to share some of them with her [Bridget]. What I find uncanny, is that in writing the text, she has found and reproduced Don's distinctive 'voice'. Extract from the Foreword by Julian Pettifer.Trade Review"'He was a professional forester and a brilliant self-taught naturalist and wildlife photographer. • Carrie Levy: 51 Months

Trolley Press Carrie Levy: 51 Months

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisA daughter documents the absence of her father at home, after he is in prison for 51 Months. On her 15th birthday Carrie Levy was waiting at home in hope for her father's return. He didn't make it. At the time he was being sentenced to prison for four years. Here she charts the years of his absence from their lives through her camera, as the void he left is filled with memories and reminders of him, compounded by his absence, from the empty garden, to the road trip to the prison five hours away. It took a year for Carrie Levy to grasp the consequences, the significance, of that day. At school her story was a jewel of gossip the sidelong glances, the whispers, the outright glares. But she worked hard, and left a half a year early to escape her own prison. She picked up her camera. With the glimmering dark glass between her and her life, she began to photograph the empty spaces in her home, on the road, outside the prison (her mother would make the 10-hour round trip almost every weekend), in her pointless garden. But it was not pointless. These pictures are redolent of loss, of vacant landscapes and interiors that appear to be meaningless but as a whole sing a narrative song of those four years, like Carson McCullers's sentences which, when dissected, add up to no more than nouns, verbs and adjectives, or the brushstrokes of Impressionist painting. It is a singular story, and one that stopped when her father came home in March, 2000. She spoke to her father for 15 minutes about his crime. It has not been mentioned since. Four months later, in June, Carrie Levy closed the lid of the suitcase under her bed that contained the 500 images she had taken.

Book SynopsisWhen Ariel Sharon visited the Temple Mount and the Al-Aqsa mosque in September 2000, there began at once a cycle of violence that has yet to be resolved. Ilkka Uimonen was there to witness the events. As the vehemence escalated he sought out flashpoints on both sides, Palestinian and Israeli. His photographs in Cycles do not follow the chronology of the events; they are very much his own narrative of his experiences. His sequence of 61 photographs of the combatants, and the innocents, is presented without an introduction. The violence and defining sentiments require none. His images fill the page, all of them full bleed, and provide a mesmeric testimony to the aggression, despair and pride that exist without boundaries in Palestine. Cycles has been edited and bound with Ilkka Uimonen's stark realism in mind. There are no frills to this volume that weighs heavy in the hand.

  • Viet Nam at Peace

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisNo one has charted the misfortunes of the innocent people caught up in the Viet Nam war as Philip Jones Griffiths. This book chonicles his respect and love for the country 25 years after the end of the war. Viet Nam At Peace is the monumental chronicle of a country struggling to emerge from the apocalyptic destruction of war, a destruction so seismic that it was thought vainly by many to be the end of all contemporary imperial aggression. It is Tolstoyan in its reach and emotional responses. Philip Jones Griffiths, the author of Vietnam Inc. and Agent Orange: Collateral Damage in Viet Nam, has visited Viet Nam 25 times since the end of the war. The first Westerner to travel by road from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City after the war, and later the Ho Chi Minh trail, he has amassed an unparalleled photographic record of the post-war transformation of the country. From the first days of terrible hardships, as the joys of victory were quickly tempered by the reality of the extent of the destruction wreaked by the war, and the crippling effects of the US embargo, he has recorded an uncomfortably comprehensive view of the aftermath of war. This is not simply a record of shattered landscapes; it is also a record of the shattered hearts and minds, culture and hopes. He has witnessed the limbless heroes, the Amerasian children, the boat people, and the re-emergence of the social problems of prostitution and drug addiction as the country embraces consumerism. Equally, here are recognised the horrified attempts by the Vietnamese themselves to curb the hydra of its worst excesses.

Trolley Books A Journey in Sight

Book Synopsis80 per cent of the world's blind population are blind because they were born in the wrong place. You are less likely to go blind in Japan, the second richest nation in the world, than in Burkina Faso in Africa, one of the three poorest. Jarret Schecter followed the work of Orbis, an international organisation who provide free and inexpensive eye treatment in impoverished nations, among them Burkina Faso. "Visiting Burkina Faso, one of the world's poorest countries, I sensed that there was a disproportionate number of people deprived of sight. Back in the United States, in February 2002, I discovered that 8 out 10 blind people live in the developing world. Astounding as this statistic is, I was even more surprise to learn that the vast majority of blindness in the world is preventable. Incredibly, most preventable blindness is cured through inexpensive procedures, that literally last minutes". Like many residual problems of poverty that are endemic to the developing world, people in the developed world do not make an intuitive link between blindness and poverty. The association is not made and the magnitude of the problem is even much less understood. Approximately, 80% of the world's 50 million blind people are blind because they were born in the wrong place. They are blind due to the residual effects of poverty: vitamin A deficiency, unsanitary conditions, minimal healthcare, and other issues. At the moment, in the world, 40 million people suffer from preventable blindness and around 125 million can barely see due to impoverished conditions. Although the developed world has done relatively little thus far, there are fortunately certain international organisations that are declaring war on preventable blindness. Organisations such as Orbis provide free or inexpensive eye treatment to people who needlessly suffer from preventable blindness. Through Orbis, ophthalmologists and support staff, whom in many instances volunteer, heroically and tirelessly travel throughout the world's poorest countries to give sight to those who are arbitrarily prevented from seeing.

    Trolley Books Double Dactyl

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisBritish photographer Nick Waplington combines large format photographs of friends and family, scenes of British streets and seaside, with an added dimension of digital manipulation. Ranging from the almost undetectable, to the surreally fantastic. Double Dactyl accompanied Nick Waplington's solo show at The Whitechapel Gallery, London, December 2007-January 2008. One of Britain's leading contemporary photographers, Waplington first came to public notice with Living Room (1991), a photographic portrait based on the everyday lives of two close-knit families in Nottingham. Since then, often working in book form, he has become known for photographing British social scenery, and his life and close circle of friends and family in East London, where he lives and works. As an artist, Nick Waplington cannot be categorised. His work combines the enigmatic and the everyday, the complex and the straightforward, and the title of his Double Dactyl exhibition embodies these uncomfortable dualities. The word 'dactyl' comes from the Greek dactylos, a word with a mundane literal meaning: finger. In the technical language of poetic theory, however, a dactyl refers to a unit of rhythm that has three syllables, with the emphasis on the first (the long-short-short pattern resembling the joints of a finger). And yet this aesthetic terminology seems less pretentious when we realise that a double dactyl simply describes the rhythm of the artist's name: Nicholas Waplington. If the photographs in Double Dactyl are united by anything, they are united by Waplington's own multiplicity as an artist. His body of work could be described as a journey around the documentary, one that has prodded and played with notions of authenticity, authority and truth that conventionally define the genre. It could also be described as an experiment in doubleness.

Book Synopsis"If Paris were a person, her face would be that of an older women with conflicting lines etched upon it of hope and despair." Until recent years, Paris was the vanguard city of the world. today the hybrid of Paris/Modernity is fading, with competition form cities of the east like Dubai and Shanghai, architectural grandeur and innovation is outplayed in scale and ambition. In these photographs, Jarret Schecter attempts to understand the future by glancing at the past. He stalks time, depicting the fractured pieces that Paris has left behind. Progress, melancholy and the past are most visibly profound in Paris, yet also profound elegance and understanding of the history if its streets. Scheter examines the city's changing, diverse population and its architecture, both young and old, the book functioning as a dialogue between past and present. He photographs people and places that have undergone massive change, or places that are still the same after decades; as such feeling he was really 'stalking' Paris, discovering the grandeur, however faded, and mystery of the city that outlives its younger counterparts.

Book SynopsisThe major art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London marked one hundred years since the first full day of Britain's involvement in the First World War. Created by artists Paul Cummins and Tom Piper, 888,246 ceramic poppies progressively filled the Tower's famous moat between 17 July and 11 November 2014. Each poppy represented a British military fatality during the war. The poppies encircled the iconic landmark, creating a spectacular display visible from all around the Tower, which attracted more than 5 million visitors. The scale of the installation was intended to reflect the magnitude of such an important centenary and create a powerful visual commemoration. Featuring forewords by Paul Cummins and Tom Piper and stunning photography of the installation, The Poppies: Blood Red Lands and Seas of Red is the only official publication to mark this landmark event. Book SynopsisFrom 1986 to 1994 the Caribbean nation of Haiti experienced a series of dramatic events: the overthrow of 'Baby Doc' Duvalier, the violent disruption of voting, the overwhelming electoral victory of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a coup d etat and a US-led military operation to return Aristide to power. Even by Haiti's standards, these were exceptional episodes in a long history of political instability and social unrest. The world s media chronicled Haiti's turbulent trajectory through newspaper articles and news films. But perhaps more importantly, Haitians themselves reacted to the cycle of hope and despair that made up their daily lives in the form of hundreds of spontaneous street murals. Mostly in the capital, Port-au-Prince, these colourful and expressive paintings both recorded key events and articulated the hopes and fears of their creators. Some targeted the fallen Duvalier and his henchmen, others the military regimes that succeeded the dictatorship. Many were later produced to celebrate the triumph of Aristide and his lavalas movement, while in 1994 a 'third wave' arrived in the wake of the UN-sanctioned invasion by US forces. Haiti s popular murals mix a vital sense of the contemporary with more timeless themes and motifs. Drawing on a distinguished tradition of naive art and produced by artists from many different backgrounds, they are rich in allusions to Haiti s revolutionary history, record of anti-colonial struggle and belief in Vodou. Inspirational leaders such as Toussaint Louverture and Dessalines appear in these images, as do the Vodou deities Ogou, the iron warrior, and Ezili, the goddess of love. Alongside Christian messages of martyrdom and redemption, the paintings invoke the Vodou rituals of sacrifice and spirit possession. Captured in 120 full colour photographs by Pablo Butcher, these murals many of which have now disappeared tell in vivid terms how Haitians viewed their unfolding political drama, and literally imposed this view on their urban surroundings.Trade Review'Urban Vodou, Pablo Butcher's photographic record of Haitian street art has a valedictory tone as most of the murals caught in his lens over the years vanished in the earthquake too. With startling immediacy, the photographs capture a fairground gaudiness and harlequin carnival of colour... Above all, there is history: the national heroes Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Toussaint L'Ouverture are portrayed with exaggerated peacock plumes and playing-card sabres... Urban Vodou glows with murals of trumpeting angels, mermaid-tailed divinities and sacrificial roosters. As a human chronicle and a tribute to a resilient people, Urban Vodou is a book to be treasured.' --Times Literary Supplement

Book SynopsisBrown Hares in the Derbyshire Dales is a written and photographic celebration of one of the Peak District’s most secretive and enigmatic animals. Meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated with over 100 colour photographs, this book gives a unique insight into the life, habitat and history of a much loved, yet threatened, species.First published in 2010 to coincide with the International Year of Biodiversity, this new edition – with more than 60 new photos – is intended to raise awareness of the brown hare (Lepus europaeus), which is now extinct in parts of Britain and listed as a priority species in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. The book is split into two sections; the first describes the brown hare, what differentiates them from rabbits and other hares, their breeding patterns, courtship, boxing, their remarkable speed and agility, their habitat, what they eat, and their history in the UK and the Derbyshire Dales. There are also tips on where and how to see hares in the wild. The second section, biodiversity, sets the hare in the context of the rapid and extensive loss of their preferred natural habitat, primarily wildflower meadows and traditional grasslands, now almost eradicated by intensive farming systems in some areas. Balanced yet thought-provoking reflections on these modern farming methods are supplemented by accounts from local farmers, including Lord Edward Manners of Haddon Hall, interviewed especially for the book by the author. From local author and photographer Christine Gregory, Brown Hares in the Derbyshire Dales is an enlightening and captivating portrait of a beautiful British mammal.Trade Review'It features wonderful images of the hares themselves, a testimony to the author's patience, fieldcraft and expertise as a photographer ... Underlying the photography, the text carries a powerful conservation message, emphasising the importance of habitat diversity, for the hares and for the rest of the associated wildlife.' Book SynopsisNorth Atlantic Drift - the warm ocean current that runs past Shetland, keeping the climate mellower than equivalent latitudes anywhere else in the world. For centuries Shetland's artistic tradition has been nurtured by the rhythms of the sea and the lyrical cadences of a unique dialect. Set halfway between Scotland and Norway, these North Atlantic isles have produced a distinct and vibrant culture. Robert Alan Jamieson mixes mythology, autobiography and history with photographs in a beautiful book not only for Shetlanders, but everyone who has visited, or dreams of visiting.
