Book SynopsisOver two trips in the north, in spring and autumn 2016, Fokion Zissiadis covered some 6,000 kilometers of road, track and trail, and rocky mountains, close to Vietnam s far northern frontier. These epic extremes of the Vietnamese landscapes have resisted generations of invaders across the centuries and are home to an incredible humanity. The photographs in this collection show us a Vietnam known only to those following less-traveled paths. Faced with the landscapes, we experience human life at the threshold of nature; faced with the people, we feel as close as we might get without meeting them. But even then, it takes a special eye to give us the view as if we re standing right there and to rediscover the beauty and the value right around us. A man who has achieved a lot in life, Fokion Zissiadis is an architect, builder, and entrepreneur who has built one of the most amazing resorts in Europe. At this stage of his life, the Greek photographer has started to travel all over the world Africa, Iceland, India looking for the unseen side of the most remote landscapes and people of the planet

Book SynopsisThis book is not about Iran. This book is a photographic perception of Iran. A book about Iran would imply the conveyance of ideas and notions about it. Yet within these pages, you will find nothing of the historic, linguistic, political, cultural, or any of the broader context necessary to obtain substantial and deeper insight into a place as rich, as diverse, and as old as Iran. There are many different perceptions of Iran and, depending upon the reader of this book, the photographic representations of people and places in the following three chapters can be interpreted as adhering to any one of these. Yet unless you have spent time in Iran yourself you have only ever been exposed to others' perceptions of it. These generally offer little understanding of what Iran is, as a culture in its own right, because they tend to narrow it down into single defining elements through a distinct visual language of symbols.Text in English and Farsi.

Book SynopsisIn 2019, Cuba celebrated the 60th anniversary of the revolution. In 1959, Fidel Castro and Ché Guevarra ousted dictator Batista and the country entered a utopian future. But Soviet communism and the American embargo forced Cuba to survive because the country remained fundamentally committed to the socialist values of the revolution.Against this background, an extensive photography project was set up with four Cuban and four European participants. Taking the current reality of the island as a starting point, they each developed a project, which together provide a nuanced picture of the complex country. The eight projects pit the photographic interpretations of the local artists against those of the Europeans. The project starts from ''heritage'' in the broadest sense of the word and focuses on the past, present and future of Cuba.Cuba Photography Missions proposes an approach to reality in the country from the personal poetics of our artists and their European counterparts, assuming Cuban contemporaneity as a topic of reflection, among universal aspects that specify the thematic and formal coherence of the exhibition. Participating photographers: Ossain Raggi Gonzalez, Bert Danckaert, Linet Sanchez, Charlotte Lybeer, Liudmila & Nelson, Ulla Deventer, Ricardo Elias and Simon Roberts.Text in English and Spanish.

Ridge Books Marjorie Doggett’s Singapore: A Photographic

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMarjorie Doggett's Singapore, an evocative interplay of photos and texts, forms a tribute to a pioneer woman photographer, Marjorie Doggett. From 1954-57, camera in hand, she roamed Singapore's colonial precincts, its port and river, the characteristic ethnic areas and elsewhere. Mind and eye aligned, and aware of the increasing pace of development, Doggett captured for posterity the cityscape in images and with historical texts. Her work appeared in Characters of Light, the first photo book to fully portray Singapore's urban setting and architecture. Published in 1957, and reissued in 1985, the book was a pioneer: in its depiction of Singapore's city and as the first local photographic book by a woman. This work draws on those two publications, both long out of print. In this book, Marjorie Doggett's photos are enriched by Edward Stokes' historical and personal texts.Born in England, Doggett was a self-taught photographer. She had arrived in Singapore in early 1947 with her future husband. In 1962 they became citizens of Singapore, their lifetime home. The photos and narrative in Marjorie Doggett's Singapore offer an entirely new presentation. Half of the book's images are hitherto unpublished. The texts and photos portray Singapore the place, through the prism of Doggett's life, inspiration and methods. Marjorie Doggett had clear views concerning the preservation of buildings, and in later years her seminal book contributed significantly to the preservation of Singapore's historic architecture.Trade Review“...beautifully produced with top-quality photographic reproductions" and "excellent introductions and commentaries packed full of biographical and historical information which adds depth and contextuality to the photographs.” “Significantly, Marjorie Doggett’s photos are the first seriously published visual record of Singapore’s urban landscape to have superbly captured many of the island’s grand structures as well as its more modest vernacular buildings. . . . In Asia, the few women who did create photo books were virtually unknown, with Marjorie Doggett blazing the path.” “[It] is important in focusing on a photographer who, though she was productive, was neither commercial nor an artist, but who remained, in the true sense, an amateur, a dedicated documentarian. . . . this book serves handsomely as an example to others harboring (or hoarding!) a collection of historical photographs.” “Doggett captured what turned out to be the end of an era. . . . This beautifully produced book is a fitting testament to an outstanding woman who led a life of quiet significance.”

Book SynopsisA stunning sequel, featuring vintage photographs of romantic male couples from the Nini Treadwell Collection. These intimate images offer a glimpse into a hidden history of love and resilience. Once hidden away, these photographs now bear witness to the enduring power of human affection.Loving II, the sequel to Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love, 1850s - 1950s, is a stunning collection of vintage vernacular photographs of romantic male couples. Drawn from the Nini-Treadwell Collection of over 4000 photos, some as much as 175 years old, the selection conveys the unadulterated joy - longed for by all of us and recognizable to anyone - of being in love. Starting from the earliest years of photography and continuing through the 1950s, this collection comprises daguerreotypes, silver gelatins, tintypes, ambrotypes, snap shots, and many more - a cross section of a century of photographic technique. The subjects come from all walks of life: soldiers, farmers, students, the young and the old, the poor and the affluent. These photographs were taken when being recognized as gay was to risk retribution, ridicule, banishment, imprisonment, and possibly death. They remained locked away during their subjects’ lifetimes for their very survival. The journeys that eventually brought them to the attention of Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell are mostly unknown, with only a few exceptions. Discovered in a variety of ways, sometimes tucked away in antique shops and flea markets, they had slipped into the cracks of photographic history before being added to the Nini-Treadwell Collection one at a time, over a 25-year period. These courageous couples, from so long ago, who took and protected these photos, could not have imagined that one day their mementos of love would appear in a book that has been embraced all over the world. So much so that a second volume was necessary. These couples sent a message to the future. The question now is, what message will we send?

Book SynopsisExploring radically new possibilities for contemporary photography by an internationally leading theorist. This book is the product of a unique collaboration between Israeli artist and philosopher Aïm Deüelle Lüski and visual culture theorist Ariella Azoulay. In their longstanding working relationship, they research how to theorize the structure of the contemporary scopic regime and open a space for its civil transformation. On this occasion, Azoulay interprets a particular series of cameras built by Deüelle Lüski, along with photographs taken by these cameras. Unlike conventional cameras and their vertical photography, Deüelle Lüski's cameras seek to generate new sets of relations between the camera and the world. Azoulay's text unfolds four different ‘short histories' of problems in photography, each of which deconstructs what otherwise might appear as a coherent photographic regime, yet which is shown to be based solely on principles of sovereignty and possession. Through and with Deüelle Lüski's project Azoulay seeks to ‘potentialize' the history of photography, that is, to recover long forgotten, un-materialized possibilities. The book contains 100 images and a conversation between the author and the artist. Erika Wicky, Ciel Variable n° 98, 2014Deüelle Lüski's camera project is instructive in its non-technological determinism: it exemplifies the fact that technologies are not teleological, but are malleable. In the case of photography, through its flexibility, it can disrupt attempts -; no matter how forceful -; to fix their ontology, their products and the messages they produce. Subversive projects such as Deüelle Lüski's may be increasing through community connections made easier with new media technologies; we will have to see where the threshold era that Azoulay and Deüelle Lüski claim we are in will take us in terms of civil engagement. Nonetheless, to see the threshold as a horizon instead of an obstructive, vertical plane is already a positive step.Sonya de Laat, Western University, Visual Studies 2015 - http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/1472586X.2015.1020084 Table of ContentsPart 1. Out of stock

Book Synopsis"It was very difficult to find a way of writing about the different perspectives of France and Africa, of Africans in France and the French in Africa.", Simon DellUnique study of portraiture in the colonial imaginaryFrench colonisers of the Third Republic claimed not to oppress but to liberate, imagining they were spreading republican ideals to the colonies to make a Greater France. In this book Simon Dell explores the various roles played by portraiture in this colonial imaginary.Anyone interested in the history of colonial Africa will have encountered innumerable portraits of African elites produced during the first half of the twentieth century, yet no book to date has focused on these ubiquitous images. Dell analyses the production and dissemination of such portraits and situates them in a complex and conflicted field of representations.Moving between European and African perspectives, The Portrait and the Colonial Imaginary blends history with art history to provide insights into the larger processes that were transforming the French metropole and colonies during the early twentieth century. Marc Lenot, 31 Août 2020, Lunettes RougesSituating his study within the move to take art history beyond Eurocentrism and into the field of world art studies, Simon Dell works persuasively across historiography, literary criticism, and, centrally, visual analysis. Drawing inspiration from Levinas’s reflection on the ethics of encounter, he foregrounds the place of the photographic medium, both in the construction of the colonial narrative and as appropriated or resisted by African leaders contending with imperial hegemony. Dell explains how its European provenance meant that the photographic portrait was never a neutral medium in the colonial context. [...] Throughout this important book, Dell’s deft, studied sequencing of visual material provides illuminating points of access to a wider historical narrative.Edward J Hughes, French Studies, December 2020, https://doi.org/10.1093/fs/knaa243Jeder, der sich für die Kulturgeschichte der europäischen Kolonisation interessiert, wird dieses Buch mit Gewinn lesen.Matthias Waechter, Historische Zeitschrift, 2021, Volume 312 Issue 1, DOI: https://doi.org/10.1515/hzhz-2021-1063Dell offers a new and very useful analysis of the complicated interrelationship between France, African colonies, and photography during the years between 1900 and 1930—a moment when the “French empire” was at its strongest. Most importantly, he recognizes that there are many kinds of colonizing gazes, and he analyzes in depth three case studies to tease out the differences. In the early 20th century, more than half the Icelandic population were still living in turf houses, and a few dozen such buildings remain standing today. Icelanders were not the only northern nation, however, who built their homes of turf and rock: in the North Atlantic region, people were living in earth structures as recently as the early 20th century, although no trace of them remains today except in Iceland. The Icelandic turf house is a remarkable phenomenon in world architectural history. It is part of international cultural heritage, and one of Iceland’s most important contributions to global culture.

Book SynopsisNostalgic images and quick, heartfelt greetings: a compelling collection of American real photo postcards and their corresponding written notes The hundreds of photographs gathered hereall issued from the peculiar category of the real photo postcard (RPPC)lead us into the meanderings of day-to-day life in the towns and countryside of North America at the turn of the 20th century. They are hybrid images, halfway between traditional photographs and postcards. The original prints were not mass-produced images but real artisanal photographs produced from silver-gelatin negatives developed in chemical baths. On the back, like traditional postcards, there is a space to put a stamp and an address, as well as a few words. Sending an image from homewhether a photograph one had taken oneself or bought from an itinerant photographer or the town picture studiowas a practice that enjoyed extraordinary popularity from 1905 to the late 1930s, particularly in the rural regions of America's heartland.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThese previously unpublished images of New York's waterfront are presented here as part of a unique editorial project: the iconographic perspective is analysed and discussed in Pauline Vermare’s interview with Sophie Fenwick, and finds further literary development in the photographer’s poetry, on which she started working during the pandemic and is used here to accompany the visual narrative. The language of photography is used here — in a series of black and white and colour shots — to retrace the memory of a transformation and to express the urgency of documentation that in these pages evolves from personal to universal. The invitation to travel voiced by Fenwick is visual poetry articulated in a series of pictures, each of which possesses the potential to become a true icon. Text in English and French.

Book SynopsisDavid Hartt’s visual excavation of the politics of landscape, photography and empire Published for an exhibition curated by artist David Hartt, this volume focuses on the concept of "terraforming"—how land is shaped for human use throughout history—within the unique context of the monumental 250-acre earthwork at Frederic Edwin Church’s Olana in Hudson, New York. The book is composed of over 130 19th-century images, drawn from Olana’s permanent collection, by Désiré Charnay, Eadweard Muybridge and Carleton Watkins; these are seen as a nascent technology that became tools for expanding empires that used photography to chart new frontiers and to document the sediments of previous civilizations. The book also features documentation of the newly commissioned artistic intervention by Hartt that responds to the historic context of Olana itself, the artistic legacy of Church, and the way land is constantly shaped and reformed to reflect different and competing cultural values.

Private displays photographs of art galleries that Lippy has taken over the past several years. Crucially, these photographs are not of the art housed in said galleries but of the areas that are marked off-limits to visitors. These areas are indeed private, and the book's title ripples throughout the 66-page volume to incantatory effect. Without trespassing, Lippy gestures toward the banal, if not insidious, forces behind the artworks on display: commerce and bureaucracy. His cropped photographs strip the galleries of identifying information, coalescing into an expanse of gatekeeping white space.
