    Damiani Daisy Chain

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisDaisy Chain is the new platform from Phillip Bogart Duncan and Charles Daigrepont Desselle. Published by Damiani, it is a print publication and online presence exploring the future of photography at the intersection of art and fashion. Decadent and surprising, lushly-produced yet unfussy, Daisy Chain offers an authoritative and fresh take on the indisputable influence of art photography, pitched against the backdrop of art history. With both a curatorial eye and an instinct for the new, Duncan and Desselle seek to re-investigate the canon: previously overlooked work is celebrated, and rising talent is supported. Never indulgent, their selection pinpoints the current moment, as well as the foundation it springs from. Printed in Italy and distributed worldwide, Daisy Chain presents a roster of thought-provoking contributors. Its inaugural issue includes original work from Emma Summerton, Shaniqwa Jarvis and Kuba Ryniewicz––and promises a visual feast targeting accomplished fashion figures and dilettantes alike.

Damiani GSM: All Photographs shot on iPhone

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisGSM - All photography shot on iPhone is the ultimate photo book entirely shot on an iPhone by French fashion photographer and director Axel Morin. Through his eye as an artist, Axel has developed a poetic storytelling of all the micro-narratives of the city, capturing the very essence of it. Since the beginning of this series initiated in 2014, several generations of iPhone have been used by Morin, who captured these city snapshots. The tones, the lines, the lights follow one another and answer each other in a cinematographic montage, presenting a modern and delicate world-city. This book is an archive of our time, made with the tool we always carry with us, which have become an extension of ourselves. The images are not anticipated or constructed, they are the ones that emerge from the urban monotony and are collected by the phone. The very graphic composition of the photographs draw from the background of Morin as a painter, and the association of lines and colors plunge us into a reenchanted everyday life.

  • Confronting the Golden Age: Imitation and

Amsterdam University Press Confronting the Golden Age: Imitation and

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIs it possible to talk about Dutch art after 1680 outside the prevailing critical framework of the "age of decline"? Although an increasing number of studies are being published on the art and society of this period, genre painting of this era continues to be dismissed as an uninspired repetition of the art of the second and third quarters of the seventeenth century, known as the Dutch Golden Age. In this stunningly illustrated study, Aono reconsiders the long-dismissed genre painting from 1680-1750. Grounded in close analysis of a range of paintings and primary sources, this study illuminates the main features of genre painting, highlighting the ways in which these elements related to the painters' close connections to, on the one hand, collectors, and on the other, to classicism, one of the dominant artistic styles of that time. Three case studies, richly supplemented by a catalogue of 29 selected painters and their work, offer the first clear picture of the genre painting of the period while providing new insights into painters' activities, collectors' tastes and the contemporary art market.Trade Review'Though long-neglected, Dutch painters of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries made decisive contributions to the development of their nation's art. Junko Aono's book examines Dutch genre painting of that fruitful epoch in terms of its complicated relationship to works by the most illustrious genre painters of the earlier seventeenth century. In doing so, she sheds ample light on the accomplishments of a younger generation of artists who, in active dialogue with their renowned forebears, fashioned an aesthetic both reflective and constituent of changing tastes in the decades following the so-called Golden Age of Dutch painting.' -- Wayne Franits (Professor of Art History, Syracuse University) 'Junko Aono's most welcome monograph is an excellent, scholarly analysis of a neglected period in art history. It offers fresh insights into the art of the early eighteenth century from a broad and interdisciplinary perspective and significantly alters our art-historical perception of this period. It is excellently written, well structured, and accessible.' -- Koenraad Jonckheere (Professor of Art History, Ghent University) 'This groundbreaking study examines the market forces, cultural values, and historical selfconsciousness of painters who reconciled their own artistic identities and production with respect to the genre tradition. This involved rendering scenes supposedly of daily life, often crafted in a highly refined style. Even as these artists reprised the themes of an earlier generation, they recast favored subjects involving music making, food, and family to please an elite class of wealthy connoisseurs. As themes from history and poetry became less popular, figures in the genre paintings became ever more elegant and idealized. This beautifully produced volume fills a gap in Dutch visual and cultural studies.' -- A. Golahny in Choice 'Overall, Confronting the Golden Age offers not only analysis of a body of work that has heretofore received limited attention, but also an examination of the artists’ response to a recent past that was already lauded by collectors as the Golden Age. The catalogue of painters, many of whom may be unfamiliar to nonspecialists, is a welcome resource. The book is lavishly illustrated, presenting many paintings that are in private collections or museum storage in full color, which would certainly aid further research in the art of this period.' --Angela Ho, George Mason University 'Cleverly shifting back and forth between specific examples and a broader context, Aono sketches a clear picture of what informed these artists' artistic choices. Her revisionist approach is underpinned by a solid methodology and she puts forward a fresh interpretation of a chapter in Dutch art that is still largely misunderstood, while her matter-of-fact style of writing makes the book accessible to a wider audience.' -- Eddy Schavemaker in Burlington Magazine 'Confronting the Golden Age is a supremely important book. Aono’s command of her sources is impressive, and her historical imagination vivid. Readers will turn to this book for some time to come. When they do, they will find a reliable source that teaches them quite a bit about this fruitful but obscure period in art history.' -- Arthur J. Talisman Publishing Living Pictures: Photography in Southeast Asia

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis richly illustrated catalogue considers the power of photography and its mobilisation within systems of knowledge and representation. Rather than just thinking about what photographs show, Living Pictures asks: what do photographs do? It acknowledges that photographs have lives—they move and they act—and in the process, they affect the world around them. This catalogue accompanies the world’s first-ever survey of the medium’s histories across Southeast Asia, from its earliest beginnings in the 19th century until its diverse contemporary manifestations. Special emphasis is placed on photography’s creation, circulation and consumption, as well as how these processes have shaped the visual regimes of the region. In addition to essays by the curators and interviews with artists and photographers featured in the exhibition, the catalogue showcases new research by leading international scholars focusing on the interdisciplinary intersections between photography and art history, archaeology and cultural theory.

Damiani Matthew Brookes: Into the Wild

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe second monograph by New York– and Paris-based photographer Matthew Brookes, Into the Wild is a vibrant celebration of surf life. For this project, Brookes followed a group of young surfers from Venice Beach on their adventures up and down the coast. The result is a story of van culture along the California coast—a story of youth choosing to follow their dreams, living out of vans, existing for surf and travel and freedom, and always chasing the best waves. The documentary-style photographs are typical of Brookes’ work, with ethereal shots punctuating more naturalistic photos. The book includes interviews with the surfers done by Zack Raffin from the major surf magazine Stab Magazine. Raffin is a young surfer himself and grew up surrounded by van culture, positioning him as an insider voice as much as a journalist.

Book Synopsis“Moving from A to B with the ferry across the open water feels grandiose. Standing at the railing on the outer deck, the mainland disappearing behind you and the island slowly looming up in front of you, something strange happens. A tranquility came over me that I had never experienced before. A new world lay at my feet.” - Jeroen Hofman Photographer Jeroen Hofman worked for years in all weathers on this magnum opus, capturing the Dutch islands in monumental images like a contemporary painter. All the photos were taken from an aerial platform, which enabled him to capture the landscape and the horizon in a very special way. An island has a mythical appeal to man and the imagination. This book celebrates and depicts the longing for an island as a place of rest, nature and seclusion. With text contributions by journalist and writer Arnold van Bruggen, who lives on Texel and made the iconic book The Sochi Project together with Rob Hornstra, and by Willemijn van der Zwaan, curator at Fotomuseum Den Haag. Text in English, Dutch and German.

Book SynopsisAs the 25 January Revolution got under way and grew from strength to strength, six young Egyptian photographers found themselves following and documenting the events in different parts of Cairo, and converging-as the demonstrations converged-on what became the focal point of the revolution, Tahrir Square. Between them they photographed many of the unprecedented and startling events around the city and in the square, from the early battles of the protesters against heavily armed security forces, through the attacks by paid thugs on camel and horseback, and the peaceful occupation of Tahrir Square, to the victory celebrations and the inspiring clean-up afterward. Together in this stunning visual record they present the days of the Revolution in sequence, from tear gas to tears of joy, picturing a story of determination and courage that inspired the world.
