Cambridge University Press Managing the Critically Ill Child
Book SynopsisThe management of critically ill or injured children has become increasingly specialised; nevertheless, the first point of contact for many sick children remains their nearest hospital. Here, the initial management will usually involve emergency department doctors, anaesthetists and paediatricians. Managing the Critically Ill Child is written by anaesthetists and emergency department physicians who currently have a significant paediatric practice. It provides a straightforward guide for non-paediatricians encountering acutely unwell or injured children. This book helps readers apply their knowledge from adult practice to children, and avoid pitfalls where the approaches in paediatrics differ. Written in a practical, concise format, Managing the Critically Ill Child guides physicians beyond the initial emergency algorithms and is essential reading for physicians and trainees in emergency medicine, anaesthesia and intensive care who may be asked to look after a child.Trade Review'Registrars who are involved with initial care of paediatric patients in an emergency room should seriously contemplate making an investment in this guide. Furthermore, every anaesthesia department ought to get a library copy for younger specialist colleagues or for older specialists who only infrequently handle critically ill children.' British Journal of Anaesthesia'… the critical pediatric patient is one that can cause uncertainty and lead to underperforming from both physicians and their staff. Cambridge University Press Pediatric Emergency Medicine
Book SynopsisPediatric patients are a unique subset of emergency patients, making up about one-quarter of all emergency department visits. Textbooks regarding the care of pediatric patients are almost universally organized by organ system, which does not facilitate an efficient diagnosis. Taking a case-based approach, Pediatric Emergency Medicine: Chief Complaints and Differential Diagnosis is arranged by chief complaint, using real patient scenarios to help the reader work through the inductive and deductive reasoning needed to assess, evaluate, treat, and disposition pediatric patients with urgent complaints. Cases are structured in the way in which they are presented during medical care, allowing practitioners to become comfortable with the general structure of case presentations: chief complaint, HPI, PMH, ROS, exam, and ancillary studies. This volume also discusses disease processes and their differentiations, providing in-depth knowledge regarding current standards of diagnosis and care.Table of Contents1. A statement Denis R. Nova Science Publishers Inc Chronic Disease & Disability: Abuse & Neglect in
Book SynopsisIn the 19th century, a greater understanding of childrens rights was acknowledged, and in the 20th century, child abuse was discovered in 1962 after many years of turning a blind eye. The number of reported cases of child abuse worldwide has since exploded into a public health epidemic with a much higher incidence than better-funded diseases such as juvenile cancer. The evaluation of child abuse and neglect is complex, with many professionals and agencies involved to try and decrease these incidences. This can be one of the reasons why the field has not been able to attract appropriate resources for prevention, treatment, education and research. Child abuse must be looked upon as a major public health problem, and professionals must make the 21st centurya century for the child. In this book, the authors have given a short review of the field.

Nova Science Publishers Inc The Optimization of Drug Prescribing in Children
Book SynopsisPediatrics is the form of medical care that is concerned with children from birth to adolescence, specializing in a variety of characteristics and changes subjective to each patient. Undoubtedly, these changes influence drug distribution and response. The body composition and the processes of biological and physiological maturation constitute important variables worthy of consideration in the effort to adequately satisfy the therapeutic necessities of all the age groups, since different formulations are required to achieve optimum therapy. The technological advances in the last decades have endowed humanity with the facilities to painstakingly analyze biological samples and thus give way to potential progress in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. From this knowledge, it becomes clear that the body is a dynamic model and thus, brings to light the necessity to individualize treatment regimens based on parameters of each and every individual, which in the past was not as important. There are instruments that contribute to optimizing drug management and safety in the pediatric population as recommended by the World Health Organization that rotate on the application of drug monitoring strategies that would contribute to ensuring the safety of patients and improve treatment schemes with increasingly safe and effective drugs. Furthermore, recourses to the therapeutic monitoring of drugs would become available where a monitoring based principally on the drug plasma levels is carried out in order to make the pertinent dose adjustments. The need for this will arise, since the most effective therapeutic range of many drugs is still unknown; unnecessarily high concentrations with potential risks of producing toxicity in patients is something that must be avoided. With these factors in mind, the decision to compose this book for pediatric doctors as well as specialists in the health sector who are dedicated to childcare became apparent, with the hope of portraying an array of pharmacokinetic knowledge, based on new therapeutic strategies ensuing from information furnished by research. The authors are convinced that the consideration of these concepts would definitely permit the elaboration of optimum and specific treatment for each pediatric patients.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Soft Skills and Aspirations in Chinese Children
Book SynopsisYoung people are expected to learn academic or technical knowledge in a manufacturing economy, which can be referred to as hard skills (for example, to produce a car through assembly lines). In many countries today, countries have been shifting from a manufacturing economy to a service economy, which has resulted in young people expecting to gain skills that are non-technical and widely transferable to different settings. This skills are referred to as soft skills, which are basically related to the qualities of an individual. In this book, the authors include several chapters on soft skills development in adolescents with particular reference to Chinese culture. This book includes conclusions based on the data collected from the third year of the community-based P.A.T.H.S. Project in Hong Kong. It also discusses dreams, aspirations, hopes and related constructs in Chinese adolescents. Additionally, the authors also present chapters on the relationships between pornography consumption and positive youth development qualities; and the last few chapters document attempts to promote soft skills in university students. With the emergence and consolidation of a service or knowledge-based economy, the desired qualities in adolescents have changed. Obviously, soft skills development plays an important role in the employability of young people. It is also vital to the complete development of young people as individuals in the present and future.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Vaccine: Measles and Rubella Vaccination
Book SynopsisMeasles is still the cause of disease and even death around the world, and with the modern widespread travel around the globe, it can be spread from one site to another with ease. Rubella infection, especially during pregnancy, can also have important effects on the fetus and the family involved. The WHO African regional target of eliminating measles by 2020 seems unlikely, but in Zambia great strides have been made to eliminate measles. Following the successful implementation of the MR (measles-rubella) vaccination campaign, the MR vaccine should be introduced in the routine immunization program to replace single measles containing virus vaccine. In this book, we review the status of measles and rubella vaccination campaigns and incidence rates of these diseases in Zambia. Vaccination campaigns were conducted in 2010 and 2012 using a single measles vaccine and in 2016, a combined measles-rubella vaccine was administered in a campaign. The measles incidence rate reduced following the campaigns in 2010 and 2012. However, the incidence of measles slightly increased after the 2016 vaccination campaign. Meanwhile, the incidence of rubella increased in 2011 following the 2010 measles vaccination campaign. Thereafter, the decline in the incidence of rubella was observed and sustained with the measles-rubella vaccination campaign in 2016. There has been great progress towards the control and elimination of measles in Zambia. (Imprint: Nova Medicine and Health)

The authors assess the main nutritive factors of breast milk, the use of fortifier as breast milk supplement, the significance of microelements in preterm nutrition, and health outcomes related to breast milk for preterm infants. The current knowledge on substance exposure through breastfeeding is also addressed, specifically how it may influence weight gain and growth during infancy and childhood, and whether the timing of that exposure may alter those outcomes. Recommendations and common feeding practices are closely linked with political and socio-economic conditions of different time periods and are embedded in culture-specific strategies for food, nutrition security and health care. As such, a review of the events and developments in the area of infant and young child nutrition, programming and human rights issues from prehistory until the end of the 19th century is provided. The penultimate study is aimed to provide an updated synthesis of the current evidence for the effectiveness of breastfeeding and breast milk feeding in the reduction of procedural pain in preterm and full-term born infants. Non-communicable diseases are usually caused by interaction of genetic factors, gender, age, ethnicity, environmental exposures, and lifestyle behaviors. Primary should start with an emphasis on improving breastfeeding practices. Consequently, the closing chapter aims to summarize the current literature on the long-term effects of breastfeeding on the prevention of non-communicable diseases.Table of ContentsPrefaceThe Breastfeeding Relationship, Child Development and Maternal HealthBreast Milk for Premature Infants: Nutritive and Health AspectsBreastfeeding, Use of Common Substances, and Offsprings Growth & Weight Gain during Infancy and ChildhoodLessons from the Past: How Research, Programs and Legislation Impacted Infant and Young Child Nutrition from Prehistory to the End of the 19th CenturyUse of Breast Milk and Breastfeeding as a Non Farmakolojik Method for Procedural Pain ManagementLong-Term Impacts of Breastfeeding on Prevention of Non-Communicable DiseasesIndex.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Adolescence in Curaçao
Book SynopsisIn this book, we present research from the Curaçao "Global School-based Student Health Survey" (GSHS). The World Health Organization (WHO) and United States "Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)" in their collaboration around this survey help countries to assess ten behavioural risk and protective factors, including alcohol use, dietary behaviours, drug use, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, sexual behaviours, tobacco use, violence and unintentional injury among adolescents. In the survey, a self-administered questionnaire is used to obtain data on young people's health behaviour and protective factors related to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children and adults worldwide. We hope that the results from this survey in Curaçao will inform stakeholders of the importance of a healthy school environment, for setting priorities, establishing programmes and advocating for school and youth health programmes and related policies.

Also highlighted is the need for improved research on intervention programs and the important service needs for families and children with autism spectrum disorders. A study is presented wherein pediatric volition among children with autism spectrum disorders participating in the Holland Bloorview (HB) FIRST® robotics program is measured. A review is carried out in order to describe the main neurotransmitters in autism spectrum condition patients. Among the studied neurotransmitters, increased serotonin and glutamate as well as decreased levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid N-Acetylaspartate and oxytocin appear to have the most empirical evidence. The authors assess the relationship between autism spectrum disorder symptomatology, theory of mind, and other individual factor on children's responses through a study attempting to determine the factors that contribute to the complexity of the emotion of embarrassment. The closing study addresses that with respect to dietary issues, awareness of the eating habits and feeding problems experienced by autism spectrum disorder children needs to be emphasized among parents and guardians.Table of ContentsPreface; Auditory Processing Disorders and Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder; Understanding Hearing Loss in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder; Developmental Interventions for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Literature Review; Exploring the Pediatric Volition among Boys with Autism in an Adapted Robotics Program; Altered Neurotransmitter Metabolism in Autism Spectrum Condition; The Experience of Embarrassment in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders; Diet- Related Issues With Autism Spectrum Disorder; Index.
