John Wiley & Sons Inc Developmental Speech Disorders
Book SynopsisThis book looks at the major changes that have occurred in the theory and practice of speech therapy for children with developmental speech disorders. It looks at current issues and their clinical implications, but the overall aim of the book is to set clinical practice firmly in a theoretical framework. While it is therefore essentially a practical book for practitioners, it also engages in the academic investigation of the nature of the different types of developmental speech disorders and their consequences for the children. This discussion provides the framework in which to consider clinical management and specific clinical techniques. A recurrent theme throughout each chapter is the impact of linguistics upon our understanding and management of children' s problems in learning to pronounce. There is no doubt that the linguistic revolution in speech and language pathology has produced an entirely new perspective on these disorders by identifying the phonological dimension of speech development. Of equal importance is the expansion of knowledge about children' s language development. Much more information is now available about phonological development in terms of what the developmental changes are and when they occur. This information is valuable in assessment and diagnosis. The book also includes a number of competing theories explaining how children develop their pronunciation patterns. These theories provide the premises upon which to establish a principled theory of therapy. To reflect these issues and their clinical implications the book is divided into three sections. The first section explores the framework within which to discuss developmental speech disorders. The second section covers three specific types of pathological conditions with which developmental speech disorders are associated. The third section examines the problems of children who have no evident major disabling condition and yet they experience severe difficulties learning to pronounce and subsequently, more often than not, learning to read and write.Table of ContentsPart 1. Mac Keith Press Crying as a Sign, a Symptom, and a Signal:
Book SynopsisClinics in Developmental Medicine No. 152 Crying as a Sign, a Symptom and a Signal brings the reader up to date on new evidence concerning the developmental and clinical significance of infant crying in the first few months and years of life. Initially studied as a sign of disease, crying is now being understood not only as a sign, but also as a symptom of problematic functioning in early development. We now know much more about normative patterns of development of infant crying and how they may be manifest in a variety of clinical settings (emergency room complaint, painful procedures, colic, temper tantrums, non-verbal and mentally challenged infants). This has brought about a new conceptualization of the significance of early infant crying which an international team of experts describe and examine. In this authoritative clinical text, both historical and methodological perspectives are brought to a multidisciplinary synopsis of the new understanding of this infant behavior.Trade Review'... up-to-date information on the latest research on crying' Scandinavian Journal of Behaviour Therapy'The authors' summary of current knowledge of infant crying is comprehensive and well presented ... The book is helpful for those who deal with infant development, especially those interested in developmental psychology.' The Lancet'It is very welcomed and instructive for those interested in or dealing with infant crying, especially from the scientific point of view. The book is excellent at presenting the state of art of infant crying and combines clinical and nonclinical fields together ... The book is undoubtedly valuable and includes extensive information for those dealing with cry research.' APA Review of Books'A fascinating and informative book based on extensive research around the reasons why some infants constantly cry ... A book I would recommend to any unit that deals with infants and their parents. The information contained in the book will instill in the reader a firmer understanding about the complexity which surrounds the crying baby and will empower professionals to offer more effective interventions to the parent or carer to help resolve this very complex and stressful issue of the crying baby.' Mac Keith Press Management of Disorders of Bladder and Bowel
Book SynopsisClinics in Developmental Medicine No. 170 Elimination disorders (nocturnal enuresis, urinary incontinence and encopresis) are among the most common disorders of childhood. Because of this variety and heterogeneity, each disorder requires specific approaches in assessment and treatment. This book provides an evidence-based overview of functional elimination disorders. It draws on the standardisation and terminology suggested by the International Children's Continence Society. Short case vignettes, photos and line drawings, as well as questionnaires and charts are provided. To enable a quick orientation for clinical purposes, each chapter is followed by summaries, guidelines and diagrams. It will be of interest to all professionals working in the field.Trade Review"[This book] is a bit of a treasure trove. Mac Keith Press Spinal Cord Injury in the Child and Young Adult
Book SynopsisAs compared to adult-onset spinal cord injury (SCI), individuals with childhood-onset SCI are unique in several ways. First, as a result of their younger age at injury and longer lifespan, individuals with pediatric-onset SCI are particularly susceptible to long-term complications related to a sedentary lifestyle, such as cardiovascular disease, and overuse syndromes, such as upper extremity pain. Second, they experience complications, such as scoliosis and hip dysplasia, which may affect them both during childhood and as adults.Persons with pediatric-onset SCI also have unique developmental needs. They experience the typical ongoing challenges of each developmental stage (e.g., childhood, adolescence) as well as changes owing to their SCI. Finally, individuals with pediatric-onset SCI face health system discontinuities, such as the transition from pediatric medical care to adult care and the transition from parent-controlled health care to self-management. This book is intended for clinicians of all disciplines who may only occasionally care for youth with SCI to those who specialize in SCI as well as clinical and basic researchers in the SCI field. Topics covered include new developments in pediatric SCI research, current standards for optimal care, areas lacking scientific evidence, and recommendations for clinical practice and future research.Table of ContentsPreface Section 1: Overview (Section Editor: Zebracki) Life with a SCI: A personal reflection Epidemiology Life care planning Assessment of SCI Section 2: Early Management of the SCI (Betz) Pathophysiology of Pediatric SCI Acute Management Principles of Treatment of Spine Stability in Children with SCI Section 3:Unique Issues in Pediatric SCI (Vogel) Non-Traumatic SCI High Cervical Injuries Dual Diagnoses: TBI Section 4: Medical Management (Vogel) Neurogenic Bladder and Bowel: Assessment, Management and Outcomes Spasticity Autonomic Dysfunction Medical Complications and Management Skin Integrity Metabolic Complications and Nutrition Pain: Overview, Assessment and Treatment Section 5: Neuro-musculoskeletal management (Betz) Orthopaedic complications Neuromuscular Scoliosis: Overview, Management and Outcome Upper Extremity Function Section 6: Physical Rehabilitation (Mulcahey) Rehabilitation Mobility for Children with SCI Section 7: Psychosocial (Zebracki) Education and Vocation Emotional Impact and Functioning Long-Term Outcomes Recreation and Leisure Time Section 8: Research Priorities and Future Directions (Mulcahey) Biological interventions/ clinical trials Neurological Recovery and Restorative Rehabilitation Advances in imaging

Mac Keith Press Movement Difficulties in Developmental Disorders
Book SynopsisThis book presents the latest evidence-based approaches to assessing and managing movement disorders in children. Uniquely, the authors have chosen to examine not just children with developmental coordination disorder, but also children with movement difficulties as a co-occurring secondary characteristic of another development disorder, including Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific language Impairment and Dyslexia. Guidelines are underpinned by motor learning theory, empiricism and professional practice. The authors have taken an ecological approach to management and show how professionals and carers working together can make relatively simple changes in a child's life that aggregate to substantial support. The book is rich in case studies to demonstrate the adaptability of these guidelines and show how they may be applied to children of different ages, abilities, and environments. The final chapter is comprised of interviews of thirteen notable clinicians and academics with intervention methodologies from around the world. This book is a valuable guide for anybody working with children with movement difficulties, including clinicians, teachers and parents.Table of ContentsNotable Clinicians Appointments ix Foreword xi Preface xiii 1 The nature of movement difficulties and developmental disorders 1 2 Principles from motor learning 32 3 Assessment and intervention 52 4 Assessment and other information: Case studies 72 5 From profiles through objectives to action 100 6 Specific intervention guideline 123 7 Case studies: Support and intervention 159 8 Interviews with notable clinicians and academics on intervention methodologies 190Anna Barnett, Reint H Geuze, Beth Hands, Sheila E Henderson, Amanda Kirby, Victoria McQuillan, Cheryl Missiuna, Motohide Myahara, Helene Polatajko, Mellissa Prunty, Bouwien Smits-Engelsman, Marina M Schoemaker and Peter Wilson 9 At a glance: Moving forward in the right direction 214 Index 221

From research on the nonmedical needs of women in the Mississippi Delta, WIC programs in Puerto Rico, and children’s advocacy in Cincinnati, Ohio, the contributors describe seven cases depicting valuable stepping stones for academic and community partners to collaborate and create a culture of health in the United States. Trade Review"Authentic and effective partnerships between researchers and community members shape research from idea to action, and promise more appreciable and enduring impacts. These Interdisciplinary Research Leaders [and their cases] offer first-hand experiences of the challenges and promise of such partnerships. This book is a guide for a better world through better research." -- J. Michael Oakes, VP of Research, University of Minnesota and Director, Interdisciplinary Research Leaders

Book SynopsisIn modern pediatric practice, gender matters. From the pink-and-blue striped receiving blankets used to swaddle newborns, to the development of sex-specific nutrition plans based on societal expectations of the stature of children, a gendered culture permeates pediatrics and children’s health throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. This book provides a look at how gender has served as one of the frameworks for pediatric care in the U.S. since the specialty’s inception. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Color Atlas of Human Fetal and Neonatal Histology
Book SynopsisThe first edition of Color Atlas of Fetal and Neonatal Histology was an important step in updating the histology texts available to practicing pathologists and pathology trainees who perform fetal autopsy and/or participate in research involving fetal tissues. It was a well-received volume that filled a major gap in pathology references related to normal histology and provided a comprehensive, state-of-the art review of fetal and neonatal histology. While the basics of fetal histology have changed little in the intervening years since publication of the first edition, this successor edition provides new insights and a fresh perspective. This book contains six new chapters including: blood vessels and lymphatics, external genitalia, eye, ear, skin, and maceration changes. Many existing chapters have also been expanded to address a greater breadth of fetal and neonatal histology such as postnatal testis development and the cardiac conduction system. The “Special Considerations” sections were also expanded in many chapters to address particularly problematic issues within individual organ systems. The book reviews the histology of the major organ systems in the fetus and neonate and provides detailed images, up-to-date references, and practical guidelines for identifying tissues across all gestational ages of development. The second edition of Color Atlas of Fetal and Neonatal Histology serves as the ultimate go-to resource for pathologists and researchers dealing with, and interested in, fetal and neonatal histology. It provides a comprehensive summary of the current status of the field with excellent and extensive illustrative examples that help guide the clinical study of fetal and neonatal histology and stimulate investigative efforts with fetal tissue. Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Growing Spine: Management of Spinal Disorders in Young Children
Book SynopsisThere has been significant progress in the field of spinal disorders in very young children over the past two decades. However, the treatment of such conditions remains challenging due to the age of the patient, different etiologies, associated morbidities and the progressive nature of the deformity. Depending on the etiology of the deformity, these children are often cared for by multiple specialists including pediatricians, pulmonologists, pediatric orthopedists or orthopedic spine surgeons, pediatric surgeons, pediatric neurosurgeons, neurologists and oncologists. Health professionals in all of the mentioned disciplines are involved in the management of these patients, which is why compiling a comprehensive text that is not limited to orthopedic specialists is essential. Since the second edition of this book was published, there has been a significant body of literature that has been published and advances made in the care of young children with spinal and thoracic deformities. This new edition will effectively help to standardize the care of these patients. Furthermore, other professionals, such as nurses, physical therapists and healthcare professionals in training, are usually not familiar with these conditions and are in need of a reference book to consult when caring for young children with spinal deformities. Sections are arranged thematically and comprise a comprehensive presentation of the current knowledge on disorders of the growing spine. After opening sections discussing general considerations and patient evaluation and diagnosis, subsequent sections describe the various categories of spinal deformity - idiopathic, congenital, neuromuscular, syndromic, and others - followed by surgical and non-surgical management strategies, both traditional and growth-friendly.
