  • Human Flourishing: A Multidisciplinary Perspective on Neuroscience, Health, Organizations and Arts

Springer International Publishing AG Human Flourishing: A Multidisciplinary Perspective on Neuroscience, Health, Organizations and Arts

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book presents a novel multidisciplinary perspective on the importance of human flourishing. The study of the good life or Eudaimonia has been a central concern at least since Aristotelian times. This responds to the common experience that we all seek happiness. Today, we are immersed in a new paradoxical boom, where the pursuit of happiness seems to permeate everything (books, media, organizations, talks), but at the same time, it is nowhere, or at least very difficult to achieve. In fact, it is not easy to even find a consensus regarding the meaning of the word happiness. Seligman (2011), one of the fathers of the positive psychology, confirmed that his original view the meaning he referred to was close to that of Aristotle. But, he recently confessed that he now detests the word happiness, since it is overused and has become almost meaningless. The aim of this open access book is to shed new light on human flourishing through the lenses of neurosciences and health, organizations, and arts. The novelty of this book is to offer a multi-disciplinary perspective on the importance of human flourishing in our lives. The book will examine further how different initiatives, policies and practices create opportunities for generating human flourishing.Table of ContentsIntroduction: In the pursuit of human flourishing.- PART I: NEUROSCIENCE AND HEALTH.- PART II: ORGANIZATION AND POLICIES.- PART III: CARE AND FLOURISHING.- PART IV: ARTS, FASHION AND LITERATURE.- Conclusion – What we have learnt form multidisciplinary views on Human Flourishing.- List of contributors

  • The Psychosocial Impacts of Whistleblower

Springer International Publishing AG The Psychosocial Impacts of Whistleblower

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book analyzes the harms related to whistleblower retaliation, its psychosocial impacts on employees, and the institutional dysfunction it creates and perpetuates. Stigma and biases against whistleblowers interfere with their ability to make protected disclosures when harm to others is at stake. Retaliatory toxic tactics create an atmosphere and corporate culture that embodies fear and encourages bystander behavior. In this book, the authors explore psychosocial impacts across domains that include financial, legal, social, physical, and emotional well-being. Ten of the 14 chapters specifically examine the toxic tactics of retaliation: gaslighting, mobbing, marginalizing, shunning, devaluing, double-binding, career blocking, counter-accusing, bullying, and doxxing. These toxic tactics are the building blocks of workplace traumatic stress (WTS) and can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, substance abuse, and suicide. WTS is a term that differentiates between workplace violence or job stress, which can be components of WTS but do not fully describe the systemic hostile work environment that targets an employee. Understanding WTS and how it disrupts identity, causes moral injury, and shatters world views are important aspects for clinicians treating clients who are victims of this kind of hostile work environment. The Psychosocial Impacts of Whistleblower Retaliation is a useful resource offering a new way for social workers, mental health providers, advocates, and other support services professionals and practitioners to assist whistleblowers. It helps clinicians understand how to view patients suffering from whistleblower retaliation and gives them a lexicon for forensic evaluations. Lawyers, especially those specializing in employment, labor, and Qui Tam cases, also could benefit from having a means to describe the psychosocial impacts of retaliation and WTS on their clients when filing for compensatory damages for pain and suffering during judicial proceedings. Finally, the book could appeal to employees and managers, human resources professionals, victim rights advocates, elected officials, media personnel, and other professionals who are interested in learning more about whistleblower retaliation and its psychosocial and cultural implications.Table of ContentsPart I – Introduction 1. • The Peer Effect

New York University Press The Peer Effect

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHow the power of peers and peer culture shapes individual behavior and future successFor decades, parents across America have asked their kids, If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you? The answer is, Duh, yes. Peers, as parents well know, have a tremendous impact on who their kids are and what they will become. And even while they insist otherwise, parents know that they're largely powerless to change this. But the effect of peers is not just a story about kids; peers can also affect adult behaviorthey affect what we do and who we are well into old age. Noted sociologists Syed Ali and Margaret M. Chin call this the peer effect. In their book, they take readers on a tour of how our peers, and the peer cultures they create, shape our behavior in schools and the workplace. Ali and Chin begin their look at the peer effect at the high school from which they both graduated: New York City's prestigious Stuyvesant High School, arguably the best public high school in the Trade Review"The Peer Effect offers persuasive and refreshing perspectives on some of the toughest cultural conversations today—from school demographics to diversity initiatives in corporate America, racism in law enforcement to the (who knew?) futility of hands-on parenting. Syed Ali and Margaret Chin combine academic authority with a forthright style that makes them seem like people who’d actually be a joy to have as peers." * Ada Calhoun, New York Times-bestselling author of Why We Can't Sleep: Women's New Midlife Crisis *"Ali and Chin knock down the myth that parents determine everything for kids and break down how peer pressure is not only about things that affect kids negatively. The Peer Effect helps readers understand segregation, economics, and one of the most valuable lessons of our pandemic era: that how we succeed in the world depends on the reinforcing success of our peers. A must-read for any parent, educator, or former student for understanding, not just schools, but how we can socialize one another into being better people." * Steven W. Thrasher, author of The Viral Underclass: The Human Toll When Inequality and Disease Collide *"Ali and Chin have written a stunning book on the power of our peers in shaping who we are and how we interact in the world. Challenging the myth that change comes from heroic individuals, willpower, or top-down commands, Ali and Chin argue that peer cultures encouraging positive norms can help fix pressing social problems. The Peer Effect is a rare book—cutting-edge research written with verve, humor, and committed to improving the world." * Victor Ray, author of On Critical Race Theory: Why It Matters & Why You Should Care *"By asserting that peers make all the difference, The Peer Effect introduces a provocative idea into a stale discourse. Surprisingly intuitive, exhaustively researched, and delightfully written, it has profound implications for everyone and every part of life. A must-read for anyone who belongs to anything!" * Lisa Wade, author of American Hookup: The New Culture of Sex on Campus *"With an engaging mix of biography and research expertise, Ali and Chin present strong arguments for the connections between inequality, communities, and individual well-being. Peers matter. This is a really witty and compelling read!" * Prudence L. Carter, author of Stubborn Roots: Race, Culture, and Inequality in U.S. and South African Schools *"Ali and Chin write with passion about the influence of peers in a variety of domains—education, policing, and the workplace. They bring a wide range of sociological insights and a good dose of humor into this wide-ranging book." * Natasha Warikoo, author of Race at the Top: Asian Americans and Whites in Pursuit of the American Dream in Suburban Schools *"The Peer Effect is a refreshingly honest evaluation of political and family dynamics that have driven personal and systemic educational decisions in NYC and around the country. This is a must-read for anyone interested in better understanding the educational landscape." * Akil Bello, Senior Director of Advocacy and Advancement at FairTest *"There's a certain allure to agency—to the idea that we make our own destinies or, in the case of parents and educators, that we can dictate how our kids' lives will turn out. The reality, however, as The Peer Effect, with its propulsive style and its engaging blend of personal anecdotes and research-based evidence makes clear, is that our agency is both created and constrained by the groups to which we belong." * Jessica McCrory Calarco, author of Negotiating Opportunities: How the Middle Class Secures Advantages in School *"Whether you’re an educator, policymaker, or organizational leader, this book will challenge you to account for the social dynamics that shape our lives and transform the places where we learn and work." * Sam M. Intrator, co-author of The Quest for Mastery: Positive Youth Development Through Out-of-School Programs *"This highly convincing and totally readable book gives readers an inside tour of the ups and downs of the U.S. educational system." * Robert Crosnoe, author of Fitting In, Standing Out: Navigating the Social Challenges of High School to Get an Education *"Authors Ali and Chin take on the issue of school reform and diversity initiatives and weave an argument around how the effect of individual peers has greater influence than top-down structural attempts at change." * Hillary Anger Elfenbein, John K. Leadership Unhinged: Essays on the Ugly, the Bad and the Weird examines what is going on at a deeper level, both collectively and individually, between leaders and followers. Employing theories derived from psychoanalytic psychology, developmental psychology, neuroscience and evolutionary psychology, these essays help to unravel and expose the pathological leader-follower dynamics that generate such movements. The book is infused with Kets de Vries’s now famous and inimitable style of analysis, which draws from myths, creates fairy tales, and uses irony and metaphor to bring his conclusions into greater relief and trigger new insights. As Kets de Vries explains, effective leaders have the capacity to bring people together and even make them better, stronger. Doing so suggests that those leaders are value driven, able to set a moral tone. Yet, when such a tone is absent or, at worst, twisted toward the destructive, leadership quickly becomes dangerous. History has shown the devastation left in the wake of unhinged leaders who have gone unchecked. To become fully conscious of the conditions that allow for the emergence of such leaders has become a moral requirement of our time. In ways both moving and entertaining, Kets de Vries’s new contribution puts us in a better position to fulfil that requirement.Table of ContentsIntroduction • Draws attention to the conditions that give rise to pathological leadership • Outlines the purpose and methodology of the book Chapter 1 The Dark Cloud of Crowds • Analyses the development of populist movements with reference to Nazi Germany. • Discusses contemporary conditions that support the rise of populist movements, including the enabling roles played by social media and the internet. • Examines crowd psychology in terms of the “selfish herd”, “mimicry”, etc. Chapter 2 Let’s Install Leaders for Life • Offers a tongue-in-cheek Swiftian proposal that proposes – in a satirical manner – that there are merits to installing “leaders for life”. • Provides specific analysis of Donald Trump, Caesar, Napoleon, Hitler, Mugabe, and others. Chapter 3 The Little Drum Boy or the Rise and Fall of a Flawed Leaders • Through the creation of a modern-day fairy tale, the text describes the rise and fall of one “Little Drum Boy”, with obvious reference the 45th president of the United States. • Detailed examination of the psychological factors that shaped the leadership style of “Little Drum”, including his personal traits, skills, and family dynamics. Chapter 4 A Strange Tale of Hatred • Framed by the tale of a leader named “Bolsonaro”, this chapter provides a psychological examination of hatred and how it is deployed by pathological leaders. • In addition to analyzing hatred, the chapter also looks at anger, contempt, self-righteousness, and other emotions utilized by demagogic leaders. Chapter 5 I won’t. Therefore I am. • Offers the tale of a queen who wishes to preserve her country by divorcing it from the larger federation of which it has been a part. The tale functions as an analogy of Brexit from a psychological viewpoint. • Provides a psychological analysis of the queen’s motivations and personality traits, including her stubbornness, fear of an attack on her inner core, inclination to hold on to grudges and past injuries, etc. • Looks to reveal the underlying condition that create such a psychological state, such as the separation-individuation matrix. • Concludes with a discussion of how to deal with stubborn people. Chapter 6 Life Lessons from the ‘Great Mother’ • A fairy tale about a grandma Black Widow spider that offers a psychological analysis of her from the perspective of the “Great Mother”. • Includes a discussion of leadership, organizations and gender dynamics, including the dangerous duality of attracting and repelling. Chapter 7 Lions Led by a Donkey • A short conclusion that reminds the readers not only of the negative impact of incompetent, arrogant leadership, but also the value leadership in tough times. • Discusses the need for moral leadership, courage in making the hard decisions, and creating a legacy for future generations.

Cornell University Press The Ambiguities of Experience

Book SynopsisThe first component of intelligence involves effective adaptation to an environment. In order to adapt effectively, organizations require resources, capabilities at using them, knowledge about the worlds in which they exist, good fortune, and good decisions. They typically face competition for resources and uncertainties about the future. Many, but possibly not all, of the factors determining their fates are outside their control. Populations of organizations and individual organizations survive, in part, presumably because they possess adaptive intelligence; but survival is by no means assured. The second component of intelligence involves the elegance of interpretations of the experiences of life. Such interpretations encompass both theories of history and philosophies of meaning, but they go beyond such things to comprehend the grubby details of daily existence. Interpretations decorate human existence. They make a claim to significance that is independent of their contribution tTrade ReviewJames March is a pioneer in the field of organizational decision making. For decades March, perhaps the wisest philosopher of management, has illuminated how humans think and behave, and he continues to do so in this book. He begins by reminding us of just how deeply beholden we have become, in our organizational lives, to the idea of experiential learning.... The problem is that learning from experience involves serious complications, ones that are intrinsic to the nature of experience itself and which are explored in the body of this book.... Besides being a broadly erudite scholar, March is also a poet, and his talent shines through in the depth of the insight he offers, the breadth of allusion he portrays, and the concise language he uses. Though this book is short, it is challenging: Don't pick it up looking for quick, easy lessons. Rather, be ready to ponder your assumptions about learning from experience in work and life. The rewards are here. -- Jeff Kehoe * Harvard Business Review *

Book SynopsisAny organization's success depends upon the voluntary cooperation of its members. But what motivates people to cooperate? In Why People Cooperate, Tom Tyler challenges the decades-old notion that individuals within groups are primarily motivated by their self-interest. Instead, he demonstrates that human behaviors are influenced by shared attitudesTrade ReviewOne of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2011: Top 25 Books "I am a fan of Tyler's approach... [H]e supports his theoretical approach by clear and rigorous research rather than the polemic that all too often substitutes for thought in criminology... [H]e demonstrates the paucity of the view that human action is pushed and pulled by the lures of rewards and threats of penalties... [H]e focuses not on the supposed outcomes of policing (such as crime rates), but upon how policing is conducted."--P.A.J. Waddington, Policing "One of the clear strengths of Why People Cooperate is its applicability to a variety of disciplines. Certainly, social psychologists and some political scientists with an empirical bent will want to read this book because it offers new ways to explore interactions and exchanges within groups. Industrial/organizational psychologists and researchers in management science, too, will readily see the applicability of Tyler's persuasive evidence... Researchers interested in social policies... are also likely to find grist for their respective mills in this brief but rich book."--Dana S. Dunn, PsycCRITIQUES: Contemporary Psychology: APA Review Of Books "[T]he book is well written, the ideas are presented clearly and the arguments are empirically grounded. Professor Tyler not only captures the reader's attention, but also manages to change his/her mind about the topic. The book is highly recommended to researchers, academics, professionals and even laypeople interested in the topic."--Francesc S. Beltran, Journal of Artificial Societies Social Simulation "With innovative analyses throughout Why People Cooperate: The Role of Social Motivations, Tom Tyler offers the foundation for participation based in social relationships. Numerous recent studies are cited that build his assertions and provide documented results for motivating cooperation within a variety of group settings."--Paula Tripp, Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences "Summing up, Tom Tyler's book provides a very useful framework for defining and describing various types of cooperation, provides a compelling empirical analysis of instrumental and social motivations that underlie cooperative behavior, and draws out the implications of these findings for organizational design."--Timothy R. Book SynopsisThis book is truly amazing?actually, a masterpiece. It tells the story of the human condition. ?From Foreword by WARREN BENNIS IN THIS FOLLOW-UP BOOK to the best-selling Driven, Harvard professor Paul Lawrence applies his four-drive theory of human behavior to the realm of leadership, explaining how leadership?like all human behavior?can be understood as a function of the balance, or lack of balance, of four basic human drives: the drive to acquire, to defend, to comprehend, and to bond. We achieve an optimal state of leadership when all four drives are cultivated and balanced. In this next-step resource, Lawrence uses historical examples and current leadership crises to explain how the balance of the four drives results in one of three types of leadership: Good leadership: The best leaders, followers, and stakeholders fulfill the four drives in a balanced manner. Book SynopsisPersonality and performance are intricately linked, and personality has proven to have a direct influence on an individual''s leadership ability and style, team performance, and overall organizational effectiveness. In Personality and the Fate of Organizations, author Robert Hogan offers a systematic account of the nature of personality, showing how to use personality to understand organizations and to understand, evaluate, select, deselect, and train people. This book brings insights from a leading industrial organizational psychologist who asserts that personality is real, and that it determines the careers of individuals and the fate of organizations. The author’s goal is to increase the reader’s ability to understand other people—how they are alike, how they are different, and why they do what they do. Armed with this understanding, readers will be able to pursue their personal, social, and organizational goals more efficiently.&nTrade Review"While no book can offer a road map out of the fog that many organizational behavior researchers have regarding personality, this book does shine considerable light on important topics. There is no doubt it will be considered new and fresh. There are few writers in the organizational sciences--or psychology for that matter--who can communicate material as engagingly as Robert Hogan. He brings the subject of personality to life, and in doing so presents previously explored and unexplored concepts central to personality psychology."—Timothy A. Leadership is the number one issue of the day, and we have tolerated weak or mediocre performance from our leaders for far too long."—Gordon CurphyPresident, C3, Co-author of Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience"It is rare to find such a seriously researched, thoughtfully constructed and paradigm-challenging book so easy to read. Hogan's new book provides a theoretical and scientifically robust explanation of leadership, managerial incompetence, and job success, in a unique and charming style that is both a joy to read and accessible to everyone. Dr Loughran places shell-shock within the historical context of British psychological medicine to examine the intellectual resources doctors drew on as they struggled to make sense of nervous collapse. She reveals how medical approaches to shell-shock were formulated within an evolutionary framework which viewed mental breakdown as regression to a level characteristic of earlier stages of individual or racial development, but also ultimately resulted in greater understanding and acceptance of psychoanalytic approaches to human mind and behaviour. Through its demonstration of the crucial importance of concepts of mind-body relations, gender, willpower and instinct to the diagnosis of shell-shock, this book locates the disorder within a series of debates on human identity dating back to the Darwinian revTable of ContentsIntroduction: shell-shock and medical culture in First World War Britain; 1. This volume sheds new light on the nature of innovative products and the processes that generate them, the psychological characteristics of innovative people, and the environments that facilitate innovation. It also fills a significant gap in the current literature by addressing the paradoxical quality of organizational innovation, which may be both helped and hindered by the same factors. The authors demonstrate that with proper measurement and management, organizations can effectively encourage individuals to produce and take advantage of novel ideas.Trade Review'While the first part of this carefully researched and well-written book focuses on the basic building blocks of innovation, the second part shows in detailed yet practical terms how to measure aspects of your organization to marshal them for innovation. Logical and useful, this work provides resources for managers and educators alike. Great discussion of the paradoxes of innovation and good reviews of assessment measures set the stage for the introduction of the authors' comprehensive innovation assessment measure, the IPAI. Using a systems approach, these accomplished authors overcome the failures of previous methods by addressing each aspect in context, not as a static, isolated element of the process. Bravo!' Susan P. Besemer, PhD'[This book] provides a great review of the current research and theoretical developments in the field of creativity and innovation. It effectively integrates work from psychology and management as well as design and entrepreneurship. One important feature of the book, which distinguishes it from others, is that the authors discuss not only the various factors that can influence creativity, but also what tools can be used to measure these factors. Cropley and Cropley, however, go beyond just a summary of previous work. This makes this book not only an effective textbook for a class on creativity and innovation, but also a great book for researchers of creativity. They suggest that to understand creativity, we must adopt a system view that integrates all these components. While the system approach itself is not novel, the integration suggested by Cropley and Cropley is.' Roni Reiter-Palmon, PhD, University of Nebraska, Omaha'This engaging, incisive book first covers the basics of what any leader, consultant, or researcher needs to know about innovation and then offers specific and practical ways for implementing and nourishing it. This is required reading for anyone who wants to build or maintain the creativity within their organization.' James C. Kaufman, Neag School of Education, University of ConnecticutTable of Contents1. Book SynopsisThe difference between what''s possible and what''s not is a construct of the human mind, a matter of perspective, and it''s one that can be changed. Working Wonders explains the fundamentals that shape the mind: how it builds walls to protect itself and how a person can tear those walls down to tackle challenges that would have previously been discounted as unrealistic. This volume shares case studies featuring people making the impossible a reality and, in doing so, changing the world for the better. On a deeper level and yet still using non-technical language, the book identifies possible neurological and psychosocial mechanisms that limit the brain, and techniques that may open it up to exploring the seemingly unachievable. Praszkier also introduces the concept of ''possibilitivity'', a personality trait that reflects the propensity to perceive insurmountable challenges as doable, and concludes by presenting a portfolio of ''Do It Yourself'' techniques.Trade Review'How do you learn from actual stories? When reading through Working Wonders by Ryszard Praszkier, you cannot but learn about real people and new ideas. Humanity is always progressing and human ingenuity can transform the impossible. The book is an invitation to be taken seriously by persons and institutions alike.' Andrea Bartoli, Professor and Dean, School of Diplomacy and International Relations, Seton Hall University, New Jersey'In our working and private lives, we wall ourselves within a pen of our limitations. Ryszard Praszkier will tell you how to make yourself free to create and succeed. Vladimir Zwass, Inaugural Gregory Olsen Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and Management Information Systems, Fairleigh Dickinson University, New Jersey'Ryszard Praszkier not only inspires us to achieve the impossible, but provides us with a social and biological understanding of how unconventional systemic breakthroughs happen. A must-read for all current and future social entrepreneurs to inoculate themselves against that inevitable response of 'It will never work!' from their peers, family, colleagues, and competitors.' Orit Gal, Senior Lecturer for Strategy and Complexity, Regent's University London'Ryszard Praszkier's latest book illuminates how each of us can build a better world and positively realize our possibilities. With compelling case studies of real-life entrepreneurs solving problems with systems thinking and sharing insights about our brains via neuroscience, this easy-to-read guide provides on-ramps to improving society and crafting long-lasting solutions.'
