Taylor & Francis Ltd (Sales) From Talent Management to Talent Liberation A
Book SynopsisAs the pace of change increases and new business structures evolve, finding and harnessing peopleâs talent is becoming ever more important. From Talent Management to Talent Liberation presents a thoughtful and practical approach to talent. It provides compelling evidence for the limitations of talent management practice and offers talent liberation as an alternative approach. Talent Liberation is positioned through five premises that draw on the agile movement to provide a fundamental reappraisal of the talent agenda. These premises are then applied through a range of strategic and tactical tools such as the Talent Compass. By combining academic research, thought leadership and practical experience, this book will stimulate fresh thinking. Readers will be inspired to take action, using the simple tools to liberate more of the talent in their organisation and their teams. Leaders, HR professionals and individuals will benefit from the relevant insights shared here.Trade Review"In Talent Management to Talent Liberation Evans, Arnold and Rothwell challenge organisational leaders to reflect on the value of talent management strategies and step back from the process to the purpose of these strategies. They strike an excellent balance between insights from academic research and practical examples in identifying the key questions which should inform talent strategy. The result is a thoughtful analysis which will help any reflective practitioner to ensure that talent management can liberate the potential in their talent and deliver on the talent agenda in the new workplace. It is essential reading for any talent practitioner." - David G. Collings, Professor of HRM, Dublin City University Business School, Ireland. "What is in a word? The authors highlight the assumptions we make and prescriptions we follow when managing talent. They use the metaphor of talent liberation to show us how to link improvements in our practice to a challenging business context. This is the book for those who accept the need for critical thinking but are also looking for positive and practical ways forward." - Paul Sparrow, Emeritus Professor of International HRM, Lancaster University Management School, UK. "Peoples’ talents and learning flourish when liberated and, like the genie, they refuse to be put back in the bottle." – Dr Peter Honey, Occupational Psychologist & Management Trainer, UK. This guide to ‘talent liberation’ is a fluent and nicely thought-provoking read, with a practical tone and a clear structure. It usefully pulls together a set of ideas that reflective practitioners have been moving towards, challenging the often lazy ‘war for talent’ rhetoric. The over-emphasis on formal HR procedures is called out and counter-balanced by advice for leaders on how to grow their teams. Useful models make the crucial links between talent management and workforce planning on the one hand and how individuals develop their own careers on the other." - Wendy Hirsh, Principal Associate, Institute for Employment Studies, UK."This book offers a critical analysis of talent management. Adopting the metaphor of talent liberation, the authors offer a path forward for talent management better fitted to projected trends concerning the future of work. I found the use of cases and the explicit identification of practical implications for HR departments, leaders, and individual employees especially useful. In addition, the book sets out to help bridge the scientist-practitioner gap in talent management, another issue that is hindering the field from progressing forward. I applaud any and all effort to approach this topic area from a critical and bridging perspective, as this book does so well." — Nicky Dries, Research Professor of Organizational Behavior, KU Leuven & BI Norwegian Business School, Norway."The authors have done a remarkable job summarizing and extending ideas around talent liberation. Beyond simple solutions, they offer unique and relevant ways to liberate the skills and energy of people in organizations. They help leaders move beyond idealistic calls for talent to specific actions to get the most out of talent." - Dave Ulrich, Rensis Likert Professor, Ross School of Business, University of Michigan Partner, USA. "Whilst carefully grounded in the literature, this is very much a practical book, offering useable tools and examples, based in part on the authors’ research and consulting work with clients. There is no simple "best practice" model on offer; instead the authors guide us through a set of questions designed to help develop a "talent liberation" approach appropriate to the context, strategy and culture of the organization. Specific guidance is also provided to help HR, leaders, and individuals themselves liberate talent. Engaging and useful, this book is a must have for those involved in the practice of talent management." - Ed Snape, Dean & Chair Professor in Management, School of Business, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong. "Steeped in significant research, thought leadership and current practical examples, From Talent Management to Talent Liberation provides new direction for understanding how we unleash talent for our age. These highly qualified authors propose a flexible 5-part framework, sets of questions, and tools that help you, your leaders, and your organization craft your best opportunities for uncovering and encouraging talent to thrive in today’s complex work environment. Taylor & Francis Conflict Coaching Fundamentals
Book SynopsisWe naturally create stories to help us make meaning of our world, but in conflict situations the kinds of stories we typically tell ourselves can actually make it harder for us to manage and resolve the conflict constructively. This book provides an accessible framework for understanding why people tell their conflict stories the way they do, and how to help them move away from conflict stories that prevent them from understanding and responding to conflict in an effective way. Presented using highly engaging and accessible cases, the book is designed to help people working with others in conflict to fully support them by understanding which areas of the conflict story to focus their attention on, and using practical techniques to support people to rewrite their story into a more constructive one to better manage the situation. The book also provides practical strategies to help people who are themselves in a conflict scenario to rewrite and enact a version of their conflict Trade Review"People in conflict tell stories about what they experienced – sometimes to mend the fabric of a newly-torn reality, or explore the meaning of what happened, or demonize their opponents, or justify their own behavior - but always to discover a way out, or return to their own un-conflicted selves, or tell the story in a way that imparts insight into the deeper reasons why it happened, allowing it to be forgotten. Samantha Hardy, a self-confessed "pracademic," brings a wonderful combination of practical coaching and mediation skills, a high level of emotional insight, and a profound understanding of the nature of narrative and melodrama to this excellent and immensely useful book. Every practitioner will learn something from it and walk away with a deeper understanding of the role of melodrama and tragedy in conflict stories, and a great many practical coaching and mediation skills to boot! It is an enjoyable read and well worth the price." - Kenneth Cloke, Mediator and author of The Dance of Opposites: Explorations in Mediation, Dialogue and Conflict Resolution Systems Design"Sam is inviting you to look at conflict through a whole new set of eyes. This challenging, and, by design, "uncomfortable" book offers just that – frameworks, tools, techniques that would allow anybody to understand the eco-phase cycle and find their way in contributing to the lasting solution.'Magdalena Nowicka Mook, CEO, International Coaching Federation'There are many important books on the climate crisis. Coaches have begun to recognise they have a role but also to begin for many the journey of moving from concern to action. What we have been missing is a guide to that journey and a framework for conceptualising the challenge we face. Ecological and Climate Conscious Coaching provides that guide and that framework. It takes us through the process of understanding how we might recognise and respond to the crisis confronting us all. Providing both concepts and tools for reflection and action it invites to rethink how we approach our role as coaches and our contribution as both professionals and citizens. I implore all coaches to both read and engage with the journey it offers. The world and our future demands no less.'Professor David A Lane, Professional Development Foundation'In our work, some of the richest material are the things not being talked about. While the authors do not flinch from laying out the facts this is anything but a book of doom. I found it a deeply absorbing and, dare I say it, enjoyable, gripping read as I was guided through lively conversations rich with images and personal adventure. While incorporating experiential frameworks and activities, it also includes in-depth questions, scientific information, tools, techniques and reflections, making it a transformational book and agent of change. It impels us to embark on a journey that is both caring for mother earth and food for our souls.'Dr. Anne Dolly Kuzhimadathil, Founder & CEO, SALT & Immediate Past President, APAC'Ecological and Climate Conscious Coaching is a unique work: creative, spiritual, practical and thought-provoking. The authors highlight the idea that the ecological crisis is an epistemological crisis. In so doing, they demonstrate the value of coaching and the role it plays in transforming hearts and minds: by connecting with what matters, and challenging unhelpful thought patterns. The book is very much a journey of inquiry; one which makes a sincere, enlightened and focussed attempt to save our world. It comes at the right time.'Dr Caroline Horner, i-coach academy'It is said that we don’t just inherit the earth from our ancestors but borrow it from our collective children. This book addresses the most important issue facing our and many other beings, the climate and ecological crisis. It does so by drawing us in through the diverse and enticing stories from contributors worldwide, and through the passion, dialogue and compassion in its pages, taking us on a journey with trusted companions. If there is one book you buy that will touch your very being, I would recommend this.'Damian Goldvarg, Leadership Development expert and author. Past President, International Coaching Federation 'This very timely anthology captures deep and original insights from a collective of global voices to address the future of humanity and our planet. The authors pose a vital question: how can coaching, mentoring, supervising and training make the most beneficial contribution to the great challenges of our time? It is a call for all of us: how can climate and ecology be integrated into our practice? Based on a seven-day ‘eco-journey’ with four convenors, over 60 contributors ask and answer challenging questions about what it means to be a practising coach today – and in what way coaching needs to transform. What, in fact, are the wider responsibilities of a coach to society? And do practitioners enable those economic, political, and ecological systems that perpetuate themselves, thus dangerously harming the planet? David Lane points out, coaches work with decision makers in industries that have a big impact on the environment. Sir John Whitmore defined the purpose of coaching as raising awareness so that people would take responsibility and ownership for their choices. He apparently did so with full awareness of our impending climate and ecological crisis. If coaching is good at helping people take a larger view of their reality, then what can coach practitioners and supervisors do to help clients to transform their businesses? The book identifies a role for coaches to support leaders in transforming the rules of the game itself. But to shift our perspectives as coaches, we need to look at the ‘regeneration’ of coach development and training and develop the courage to act. This book asks difficult questions that as practitioners we need to begin to address urgently. As Peter Hawkins says, the coaching profession needs to move from being individual and ego centric to being eco centric.'Dr Sunny Stout-Rostron, University of Stellenbosch School of Business'This book is so much more than a book. In addition to its deeply informed systemic analysis and rich storytelling, Ecological and Climate-conscious Coaching offers a grounded guide for a revolution in consciousness, rich in conversations and camaraderie, packed with diverse perspectives and practices. This book is not only a must read for all coaching professionals and business and community leaders, it is also a template of transformation for anyone seeking understanding, support and agency in response to the ecological and climate crises. Taylor & Francis Metaphors We Lead By
Book SynopsisWe live in a leadership-obsessed society. The result is that we assume nearly any social or economic ill can be mended through better leadership. Sometimes, this commitment to leadership is followed by hero worshipping, wishful thinking and misplaced hope. Seeking to understand the faith we place in leadership, the authors draw on a number of in-depth studies of managers trying to do leadership. It presents six metaphors for the leader: as gardener, cosy-crafter, saint, cyborg, commander and bully. Some of these offer unexpected insights into how leadership does and does not work. The book sheds light on a varied - often contradictory and sometimes darker - side of leadership. Cutting through the management-speak drenched current literature on leadership, Metaphors We Lead By presents an enlightening and refreshing understanding of an important topic. It will be useful reading for students and researchers, as well as the thinking manager.Trade Review'Rarely is academic writing so insightful, useful and amusing at once.'Gianpiero Petriglieri, INSEAD, France'This insightful work is a valuable contribution to the study of leadership. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Theory and Practice of Relational Coaching
Book SynopsisThe ''relational turn'' is a movement affecting a range of disciplines including neuroscience, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, organisational consulting and, more recently, coaching. Its primary focus is on the centrality of human relating in determining how individuals develop, make meaning and function individually and collectively. In The Theory and Practice of Relational Coaching: Complexity, Paradox and Integration, Simon Cavicchia and Maria Gilbert expand existing coaching theory and practice to focus on the implications of the relational turn for how coaches and clients think about the nature of identity, the self, change, learning, and individual and organisational development. Drawing on perspectives as varied as relational neuroscience, the relational foundations of personality development, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, shame, vulnerability, complexity and systems ideas, the authors shed light on many of the paradoxes and challenges facing coaches and their cTrade Review"This is the most rigorous introduction to relational coaching to date. The entire field is placed in a historical and psychological perspective, with sound referencing to all the relevant sources. Not only is this the best handbook you will find, reading the philosophy and case studies will allow you to pick up and implement in your own practice the subtle differences between traditional and relational approaches. This book is all about attending to coaching, the relationship and your client as they appear in the moment, rather than attending to some pre-set idea about what coaching should be. In this sense there is a freshness and depth permeating from every page. Mostly, this relational turn towards your own fresh lived experience will be a priceless reward that you reap from reading this exceptional book. Underpinning all this you are invited into a series of wonderfully crafted case examples, from which I personally learned huge amounts." - Erik de Haan, Director of Ashridge Centre for Coaching, UK and Professor of Organisation Development, VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands "This book offers an overdue corrective to the cause-and-effect assumptions that govern many organisations with respect to what it means to lead and the support that managers need. Instead of tools and processes, Simon Cavicchia and Maria Gilbert offer a rich description – supported by rigorous intellectual foundations – of the dynamics of an effective coaching relationship. This is not a manual for the coach doing the coaching to the coachee. It’s a manifesto for coach and coachee co-creating the meaning of their work, taking into account the complex and often contradictory influences that bear on them. It is a book that brings into the conversation the dynamics of power and politics that shape working life, challenging the notion that these can be bracketed out in the name of neutrality. It helps coaches navigate the tricky path between serving the organisation that pays the bill and the needs of an individual coachee. The relational approach is not simply about establishing a close and mutually respectful relationship. It’s an acknowledgement that what the coach and coachee have to do only ever emerges from the specificities of the relationship between them and the context in which they work. Put aside pre-conceived recipes, the authors say, and connect with the person before you." - Martin Vogel, co-founder, The Counter-Consultancy"The Theory and Practice of Relational Coaching: Complexity, Paradox and Integration is nothing less than a tour de force. Simon Cavicchia’s unique blend of eloquence, erudition and warmth combines with Maria Gilbert’s decades of experience as a consummate educator to create an exceptional book. It takes the reader on a rich journey, starting with scene setting and philosophy. It covers the main theories which underpin an integrative relational approach and describes in detail all aspects of a here and now relational encounter. After a deep dive into ‘the micro dynamics of relational interaction’ the authors then gently move outwards to the subtleties and forces of the organisational context. Quite simply, this book says everything about relational coaching, its theories and practice. The authors critique and integrate an extraordinary depth and breadth of theories from all the psychological traditions. This alone makes the book an education in itself! I recommend it not only for coaches, but for psychotherapists and counselling psychologists who have made ‘the relational turn’."- Charlotte Sills, Professor of Coaching, Ashridge Business School, UK"Simon Cavicchia and Maria Gilbert draw on their substantial depth of experience and expertise in the fields of executive coaching and psychotherapy to show that these are not separate but essential counter-parts enabling us to strive towards higher levels of performance. This is an essential and timely publication for all serious coaches and business professionals who are struggling to apply the 'rational' linear left brain models of coaching to an increasingly fast moving and complex world. It covers the foundational background to this holistic way of apprehending our changing world enabling one to weave together top-down linear and bottom-up emergent perspectives and manoeuvre deftly between them. I thoroughly recommend this publication for all aspiring to success on the sometimes stormy oceans of complexity." - Syed Azmatullah, MA, PhD; Psychotherapist, Executive Coach, author of The Coach’s Mind Manual "This is a book for coaches, clients, and anyone interested in the delicate business of human relating. Spanning a range of dimensions gracefully it is profound yet accessible, broad and thorough, with a clear advocacy that leaves me feeling invited to make up my own mind. Simon Cavicchia and Maria Gilbert have managed to offer an in-depth historical overview of different perspectives and to paint a lively picture of the complex and subtle nature of current, integrated approaches. This book is theoretically sound and practical, encouraging and provocative. The case studies are lively and show the messy nature of this work and the difficulty of bringing awareness to the process at all times. Just what we have been waiting for." - Kathleen King, PhD; researcher and co-editor of Organisational Consulting: @ the Edges of Possibility and The Change Doctors: Re-imagining Organisational Practice"This is the most rigorous introduction to relational coaching to date. Just what we have been waiting for." - Kathleen King, PhD; researcher and co-editor of Organisational Consulting: @ the Edges of Possibility and The Change Doctors: Re-imagining Organisational PracticeTable of ContentsSECTION 1 The relational turn and coaching1 Setting the scene for an integrative relational approach to coaching in challenging times – uncertainty, paradox and complexity2 Who is it who is in a coaching relationship?3 Relational coaching and change – two distinct and interrelated approaches to change4 Selves in context – navigating and negotiating organisational life SECTION 2 Practice perspectives5 Coming together – unpacking the coach-coachee-context constellation6 Intersubjectivity 1 – understanding relationship dynamics from a developmental perspective7 Intersubjectivity 2 – the co-creation of the coaching relationship, meaning and change8 Relational integration – implications for practiceSECTION 3 Applications9 Shame and vulnerability – the experiences that dare not speak their name10 Perspectives on contracting from a relational perspective11 Coaching in organisations – culture, norms and novelty12 Feedback and assessmentConcluding thoughts: Relational perspectives on the development of coaches, ethics and supervision

New Techniques of Grief Therapy is an indispensable resource for professionals working in hospice, hospital, palliative care, and elder care settings; clinicians in broader health-care and mental health-care practices; executive coaches; and students in the field of grief therapy.Trade Review"Clinicians want—and need—more than theory to guide them in their work with the bereaved. They also seek effective, how-to information to assist those contending with grief of all kinds, whether prompted by death or non-death loss. Nowhere else in the literature can professionals find such a wealth of interventions that help the mourner identify, express, and transform their responses to loss, reaffirm meaning, revamp life narratives, and develop healthy continued connection to lost loved ones. This book is a must have; it’s a veritable gold mine for all who treat the bereaved, from the newest students to the most seasoned therapists."—Therese A. Rando, PhD, BCETS, BCBT, author of Treatment of Complicated Mourning and co-author of Treating Traumatic Bereavement: A Practitioner’s Guide"Robert Neimeyer brings us a third outstanding collection in his excellent series on grief counseling and therapy. It features fifty-nine accessible chapters by authors from around the world; addresses diverse challenges in learning how to live meaningfully not only with bereavement but also with non-death-related losses; and concentrates on concrete techniques (illustrated by real-life examples) for supporting others in meeting those challenges. It is filled with innovative methods for practitioners, understanding for advanced students; and wisdom for both."—Thomas Attig, PhD, author of How We Grieve: Relearning the World"At last! Taylor & Francis Ltd Coaching
Book SynopsisNow in its fourth edition, the bestselling, seminal book by James Flaherty, Coaching: Evoking Excellence in Others, is an insightful, thought-provoking, pragmatic guide that dissects the art and science of coaching. This fourth edition includes two brand new chapters: the first is on finding one's inner guidance and purpose in traversing the world of work, especially in more uncertain working environments; and the second is on the topic of somatic intelligence. As in earlier editions, this foundational book in coaching clearly presents the theories, concepts, and models, and then moves on to consider rigorous methods of practice and self-observation in a relationship of mutual trust, respect, and freedom of expression. It will probe you to rethink how you relate to your clients and your staff, how you produce long-term excellent performance in yourself, and how you can become more effective in helping others to achieve their goals.Coaching, Trade Review"James Flaherty’s Coaching has been for some years a foundational text for the field. This fourth edition updates the material and adds two vital new chapters, Somatic Intelligence and Midlife Drift. I continue to be impressed with James’s clarity, thoroughness, compassion, wisdom, and his generous referencing of a wide variety of useful sources. For those who have read Coaching, this is a useful update; for those who have not—whether you are a new or an experienced coach or interested in exploring coaching—this book will not only open your eyes; it will provide insights and practices to set you on a new course."Norman Fischer, poet, Zen priest, author of Museum of Capitalism and When You Greet Me I Bow: Notes and Reflections From A Life in Zen"James Flaherty’s book Coaching: Evoking Excellence in Others has established itself as an indispensable classic in the field. In this fourth edition, new chapters on somatic approaches to coaching and on 'midlife drift' add crucial pieces to an already excellent guide to coaching the whole person. Highly recommended." Russ Hudson, author of The Enneagram: Nine Gateways to Presence and co-author of The Wisdom of the Enneagram"James Flaherty has written a thoughtful and deeply insightful guide for coaches—equal parts theory and practical instruction with valuable distinctions in how to apply these learnings to ourselves and our coaching practice."Laila Tarraf, Chief People Officer, Allbirds and author of Strong Like Water"Coaching is a must-read for coaches, HR professionals, and managers! It has been a core foundation of my own coaching work for two decades. This edition offers exciting new reflections and practices for building somatic intelligence and navigating mid-life, enriching the coach’s toolbox significantly."Amy Jen Su, executive coach and author of The Leader You Want to Be: Five Essential Principles for Bringing Out Your Best Self; Co-Founder & Managing Partner, Paravis Partners"James Flaherty’s sage teaching clearly comes from one who has journeyed his somatic interior thoroughly enough to know just the right ways to gently invite us to trust our own."Susan Olesek, Founder, Enneagram Prison Project and The Human Potentialists"In a practical and engaging way, James Flaherty skillfully synthesizes many disciplines into an approachable and effective system for human transformation at an individual and collective level. In this new edition, James expands the coaching perspective to the world of somatic intelligence and that of life transitions, particularly mid-life, offering powerful reflections and practices to deepen one's awareness and connection to meaning. A gem to help anyone get closer to realising their potential."Luzette Jaimes, Director of Learning and Development, Ashoka and Co-Founder of the Consciousness CoalitionPraise for Earlier Editions of Coaching:"In Coaching: Evoking Excellence in Others, James Flaherty brilliantly dissects both the art and science of coaching—one of the more difficult and least understood roles in organizations. Beginning with theories, concepts, and models, he shows their application to practice and empowers any aspiring coach to be more effective in helping people achieve their goals. A better book on this subject just doesn’t exist."Jerry I. Porras, Lane Professor of Organizational Behavior and Change Emeritus, Graduate School of Business, Stanford University and Co-Author, Built to Last"As the field of coaching finds its way to becoming a mature discipline, James Flaherty's dedicated field research, study, and sound articulation offers a definitive ground and a sensibility of genuine care. At the core, this book offers a way of thinking about human beings that makes action and practice central to learning. This is a no-nonsense, generous, pragmatic book that belongs on the shelf of every coach, novice or veteran."Richard Strozzi-Heckler, Ph.D., Founder of Somatic Coaching and author of The Anatomy of Change and Holding the Center"At long last, a book on coaching that moves beyond 'advice from the sidelines.' James Flaherty convincingly shows that the only way to truly help people grow is to help them in developing new practices and new language, and that the only way to coach effectively is to enter into a reciprocal relationship where 'coach' and 'coachee' engage in a dance of mutual influence and growth."Peter M. Senge, MIT and Society for Organizational Learning"This extraordinary book clearly represents James Flaherty's ability to insightfully enable the self-generating and self-correcting capacities of his clients. His clarity and candor engage the reader to more deeply examine the opportunities to live a more integrated and holistic life."Michele Goins, Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Imaging and Printing Group, Hewlett-Packard Company"James Flaherty focuses on the commonly overlooked fact that a coachee is a 'human-being.' He effectively emphasizes that this is the most important aspect that a coach should always have in mind, something that many of us tend to forget. It was this tact that he applies toward coaching, as well as many other brilliant insights, that helped me make the decision to publish Coaching in Japanese and apply its lessons in my practice."Mamoru Itoh, President, Coach21 Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan"James Flaherty frames deep questions about how humans operate across a series of interconnected domains such as the mind, body, and emotions, which will give both new and experienced coaches pause to reflect. He frames crisp distinctions about the coaching process which will generate new perspectives on the role of the coach. He leaves a trail of deeply researched threads that the reader can explore after reading to deepen their knowledge and understanding. All of this is done in a crisp and quietly elegant dialogue which makes you believe he is present as you are inspired to explore, with profound curiosity, your own beliefs on what we are as human beings and how we should show up as coaches. As you read and digest his coaching metaphors, analogies and questions, there are inexplicable possibilities that crystallize fresh insights that emerge and a renewed commitment to explore oneself and the coaching we strive to master."Craig O'Flaherty, Director, Centre for Coaching, Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town, South AfricaTable of Contents1. Scott is one the first and few existing resources exploring the topic of workforce diversity from the vantage point of individuals, organizations, communities, and society. The book is well-balanced in its presentation of theories and models for broad understandings of diversity in workplaces and organizations, while also tending to the social, cultural, and relational aspects of diversity that are related to individual and community identities and social injustices. While many other books focused on the issue of diversity in the workforce or workplace tend to focus on the business case for contemporary diversity efforts, this book is distinguished by its centering of relational and social justice—diversity should and must be advanced simply because it is the right thing to do.Joshua C. Collins, Ed.D.Associate Professor of Human Resource DevelopmentUniversity of Minnesota-Twin Cities"This gem of a book combines easy-to-read trustworthy information from deep experts with the opportunity to then think through how to turn that information into action. I recommend it to leaders, practitioners, students, and educators alike – to anyone who wants to understand where we are, how we got here, and how we move forward." Darren C. ShortHost of Human Resource Development Masterclass podcastArguably the most useful textbook on diversity in the American market. This book focuses on the theoretical and practical frameworks appropriate for organizations and individuals operating from a western perspective. It is also a global resource in the sense that it addresses universally common issues like ethnicity, social class, and "isms." For those seeking to understand the diversity issues and trends in the workplace and what to do about them, this book educates in a way that most books on the subject do not. Taylor & Francis Ltd Rethinking the Concept of Waste and Mass
Book SynopsisThis book presents hard facts, drawn from extensive research, to highlight our unsustainable consumption of the Earthâs resources and the limitations of the UKâs current management of waste and recycling.Setting out a bleak picture of a world in which we are literally consuming our planet, the book explores the psychological, economic and capitalist drivers behind this behaviour. Controversially, the book examines the drawbacks of the current approach adopted by many local authorities on the kerbside collection of recyclable materials, as well as the UK governmentsâ strategic approaches to household recycling, including the lack of UK- wide infrastructures for packaging reuse, and for product repair and recycling. It challenges the whole concept of waste, leading to a proposed new strategy for the management of household waste, including a simplified household collection system, the introduction of an incineration tax and the banning of all household waste exports. The author proposes reconceptualising waste as unwanted but valuable material and argues that the responsibility for facilitating reuse, repair and recycling, rests with manufacturers who must start designing with the end in mind.Given the current economic climate, and a dampening of the green agenda within UK politics, the book provides a much- needed call for critical discourse on how, and how much, we consume and sets out clear, practical solutions for change. The book will be of interest to manufacturers, retailers, consumers, local authorities, policy makers, students and professionals looking to reduce our impact on the environment. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

From war zones to refugee camps, prisons to hospitals, elite sport to supermarkets, each case study draws on psychoanalytic below the surface thinking to analyse, interpret and understand a leader's decisions, motivations and fears.Rachel Ellison's inter-cultural approach takes us to Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, Sudan, Somalia and the Central African Republic, to Honduras, the Czech Republic, the USA and the UK. Global Leadership & Coaching presents a series of individual case studies from Ellison's own experiences working with senior commercial, public and third sector leaders across 35 different countries, cultures and organisational contexts. Compellingly written, this book explores the a diverseTrade ReviewRachel’s deep and diverse insights are brilliantly brought to life through a number of fascinating case studies in this valuable contribution to the literature of leadership. Covering an extremely broad spectrum, from the deeply personal account of the experiences inside NICU to the powerful story of leading an NGO in a war zone, Rachel shows that whilst the situations may differ the fundamental challenges of leadership are universal. This book is a great resource for anyone wanting to explore leadership: accessibly written, thought-provoking and universally applicable. - Andrew Hodgson, Head of Finance Northern Europe, Uber.Every day leaders in all fields wrestle with stressful situations, but not many of us work in war zones or face life and death situations. This book draws vivid lessons from the experience of those courageous people who do. It analyses different responses to acute stress. It points the way to positive, life-enhancing solutions to extreme demands. I recommend the stories Rachel Ellison tells so well to anyone looking for inspiration for their own leadership role. - Alan Bookbinder, former Director, Sainsbury Family Charitable TrustsRachel Ellison's book speaks to everyone who has leadership responsibilities and teams to manage. Her meticulously researched case studies shed light on the issues leaders face across a fascinating range of organisations and cultures. By focussing on individuals and how they respond to very specific personal challenges in settings from prison to Paralympics, Rachel draws lessons which apply across large and small organisations. She shows how leaders grow through awareness of their own background and motives; and how important it is to engage honestly with others, respecting their culture and outlook. This book will be invaluable for everyone who wants to connect with those they lead, and to understand what real leadership means in a global context. - Sir Martin Donnelly, KCB, CMG, former Permanent Secretary for the Department for International Trade and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS).This highly accessible book challenges us in an understanding of leadership that extends far beyond the more commonly defined competencies of envisioning the future and inspiring followers. It invites us to explore the critical effect of the emotional labour of work on the individual, the group and the organisation. Through the range of evocative narratives, we are invited to tolerate, feel and think about deeper, usually covert, dynamics of organisational life. The book offers a gift of insight to leaders.- Wendy Harding, PhD, CEO and Director of Academic Programs, National Institute of Organisation Dynamics, Australia. From her position of trust coaching leaders in some of the most challenging situations and her own personal experience, Rachel Ellison offers a wealth of insight which is relevant to leaders in all walks of life. Her observations of the psychological importance of space and environment in a neonatal intensive care unit, mirror some of the challenges faced by businesses seeking to reconcile the spiralling costs of city based property and a desire felt by many employees to work more flexibly outside the office. In the supermarket chapter, we meet a World Foods buyer who is truly trying to embrace and harness the power of diversity (a word too often used to refer only to matters of gender or race) to create commercial as well as cultural successes, experiences that can be applied by us all. Packed with reflective learning, this is a book I keep going back to and every time I do, I find something new to think about. - Jenny Hearn, Director PWCDiversity is key to this engaging discussion of what leadership means. Ellison has a unique ability to plot psychological learning against a backdrop of real human theatre. The canvass moves from Afghanistan to Jerusalem, from cycling to salami, from the authenticity of leadership to the authenticity of gherkins. The world has needed someone to come out and say authoritatively that diversity will help your organisation thrive more successfully and do your job better. What Ellison is telling us is that diversity is not a tick box exercise but a vital tool and in fact a requirement of effective leadership.Ellison says you win trust by learning and listening, and she doesn’t shrink from the big questions, such as what leadership teaches us about ourselves and about those around us?I loved this book and the idea that leaders are leaders, all over the world and in every walk of life. Buy a copy of this book if you want to learn about diversity of teams, how women are empowered when they join together, and how commercial success and collaboration in business can be a shared cow. - Rebecca Hilsenrath, Chief Executive, Equality and Human Rights CommissionThis book presents us with diverse and deeply personal stories. It challenges us to embed the powerful lessons within them into our professional lives. As an educator, the text encouraged me to find vital learning about our work environment, space and boundaries, even from the most extreme and distressing circumstances. I was engrossed by the leader’s stories but really appreciated how the author summarised each chapter by directing the reader, to reflect on their own thinking and learning. Ellison’s insight, pace and clarity makes for a thought provoking read with lasting impact. - Niki Jackson, Director of Education NNLS / Youth Education Director. In the well populated field of Leadership Coaching books this one is different. It demonstrates how leadership takes many different guises but the qualities it requires are the same and the questions a Coach needs to explore are as relevant in times of cultural change as in active conflict zones as in board rooms. This thought provoking account of the writers experiences provides insights about how a Coach can enable the navigation of different leadership situations by considering the hidden story as well as the presenting facts. And a bonus for the reader is the stimulus questions at the end of each chapter - particularly valuable for Coach Supervision groups! - Liz Macann, former Head of Coaching, BBC.I often find it difficult to find a business book that stimulates my thinking and emotions. Rachel Ellison’s book clearly does this. I felt a personal connection and empathy with the leaders sharing their stories and could relate to the challenges they face. The real-life, non-corporate situations create powerful perspectives that are thought provoking and inspirational. It is a reminder to business leaders, sports coaches and parents of their responsibilities to care for their teams and families, as a collective of individuals with their own needs and to be a catalyst for each person to achieve their aspirations. The book challenges traditional ways of thinking with humility and in a non-arrogant style. - Geoff Ranson, Senior Director, Internal Audit Asda Wal-Mart.Rachel draws on the varied and fascinating experiences that coaching has exposed her to, creating a book that is colourful, thought-provoking and hard to put down. I especially liked the story of Fatima in Somalia and the near-impossible leadership choices she has to make. Rachel's analysis goes beyond the obvious and looks at upbringing, culture and personal drivers to help both leaders and coaches untangle complex issues at work. I loved it. / Deeply enjoyable. - Anthony Ryland, former Learning & Development Director, Samsung Electronics. We lead in a very different world today where so many rules are being rewritten in all organisations – private, public, NGO. Coaching is one essential tool which will allow us to lead effectively in such a changed world. Rachel Ellison’s fresh and provocative book challenges us in powerful ways as to how as leaders and coaches we must raise our game to remain relevant and excellent in this new world." - Alan Smith, Senior Executive at a global financial services organisation. This fascinating, insightful book takes the reader on a journey of others’ leadership experiences and coaching challenges, from the hot, dangerous war zones of Afghanistan and Syria to the mosaic tiled floors of the National Gallery, London. In each of its chapters, the author skilfully blends a personal human story with deeper more psychoanalytical insights, which can only leave us thinking harder about our leadership and interactions with colleagues. Equally skilfully the book draws out reflections for both leaders and coaches, the two complementary perspectives making it a particularly useful tool for each. - Tim Stew, British High Commissioner to Trinidad & Tobago, FCO.Rachel thoughtfully examines the essential importance of investing time in relationship building with your suppliers, and of really getting to know your team and nurture it. The international supermarket chapter skilfully raises questions about FMCG food retail in 21st century Britain, the deeper meaning and role of food in the lives of communities around the world, the type of food we buy and why. If only most consumers had the chance to read this chapter and build an understanding of the unique supply chains giving them access to wonderful produce. A must read for leaders, coaches and consumers. - Jane Steward, Managing Director, Eastgate LarderThis book provides a fascinating insight into both the art and the science of leadership coaching. The case studies are compelling and (sometimes uncomfortably) honest. The insight into how a coach picks up on signals, chooses what to name and how to frame questions will make me more self -ware as well as more observant of the unspoken, and perhaps even subconscious, cues from those who work with and for me. This book can help on the journey to becoming a transformational and not just a transactional leader. - Emma Squire, Director of Arts, Heritage and Tourism, Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport.Rachel Ellison’s book about leadership and coaching is incomparably fresh. Instead of shop worn theories of coaching pummelled by tired ideas, we are brought into the life space of her clients as they live and breathe their leadership challenges and dilemmas. From a refugee camp to neonatal intensive care, to elite high performance para-sport, this is a book about leadership as it is lived in the raw and about a coach who meets her clients where their experience, intellect and emotions converge. You the reader are invited to inhabit Ellison’s world and to learn along with her what it is like to help leaders achieve programmatic and moral excellence. - Dr Larry Hirschhorn, Director, Centre for Applied Research, Philadelphia USA; Chair Bridger Memorial Award Committee, ISPSO Rachel Ellison is pioneering in relation to coaching a lovely tradition that has been highly valued in the field of psychotherapy – describing real cases in a personal way, complete with rich details and intricacies of coaching practice. The reader can follow the narrative of each case through the eyes of both the client and the coach, with additional insights provided by the psychoanalytically oriented supervision group. The stories offer a deep questioning of the ‘good practice’ imperatives of the field and challenge many traditional interpretations of how the coaching process should proceed. It is not a book with ‘how to’ strategies for being a coach or a coaching client. It offers something much more important – a glimpse into the real struggles and delights of the coaching encounter. - Tatiana Bachkirova, Professor of Coaching Psychology and Director of the International Centre for Coaching and Mentoring Studies at Oxford Brookes University, UK.Table of ContentsForeword: Dr Susan Kahn; Introduction: Rachel Ellison.Chapter 1: Leading where it's hot, dusty and dangerous: What commercial and public-sector leaders can learn about effective leadership from non-governmental development aid workers.Chapter 2: A hero is someone who wins a war, not loses a leg: How a Paralympic coach led his diversely disabled athletes to gold.Chapter 3: Stocking the World Foods aisle: The story of how a global supermarket manager had to relearn how to lead effectively, in a multi-ethnic context.Chapter 4: Cooking for Conflict Resolution: An exploration of difference. Taylor & Francis Ltd LeadershipasPractice
Book SynopsisThis book develops a new paradigm in the field of leadership studies, referred to as the leadership-as-practice (L-A-P) movement. Its essence is its conception of leadership as occurring as a practice rather than residing in the traits or behaviours of particular individuals. A practice is a coordinative effort among participants who choose through their own rules to achieve a distinctive outcome. It also tends to encompass routines as well as problem-solving or coping skills, often tacit, that are shared by a community. Accordingly, leadership-as-practice is less about what one person thinks or does and more about what people may accomplish together. It is thus concerned with how leadership emerges and unfolds through day-to-day experience. The social and material contingencies impacting the leadership constellation the people who are effecting leadership at any given time do not reside outside of leadership but are very much embedded within it. To find leadership, then, we must Trade Review"At last, a piercing and comprehensive account of the philosophical and methodological implications of seeing leadership as a collective accomplishment. Some of the most authoritative thinkers have contributed the fruits of their diverse researches, coordinated by Joe Raelin’s excellent editorial scene-setting; the whole adds up to what will surely be a land-mark text in leadership studies." –Jonathan Gosling, Professor Emeritus, University of Exeter"This book collects powerful statements from notable scholars in the emergent Leadership-as-Practice field, and confirms it as a rich alternative to the under-socialised accounts of leadership that prevail so widely. Leadership-as-Practice: Theory and Application will be an essential reference point for researchers in this and related fields." –Richard Whittington, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford"Leadership-as-Practice introduces the reader to a new paradigm that moves our field beyond the traditional views of leaders and how they can be developed. This interesting and well-researched book is authored by leading theorists from around the world and should be required reading for all scholars and students in the field of management. I highly recommend this book!" –Michael Marquardt, George Washington University"Leadership-as-practice is less about what one person thinks or does and more about what people may accomplish together. It is thus concerned with how leadership emerges and unfolds through day-to-day experience... Overall, the book provides a rich alternative to traditional views on leadership and leadership development." –Rick Holden, Liverpool John Moores University, UK"I highly recommend Raelin’s edited Leadership-as-Practice collection because of the range of contributors considering L-A-P from different perspectives. Each of the authors engages the reader through a series of critical questions, which are required to further develop and understand L-A-P more broadly both within and outside the Academy. The book is particularly useful for academics researching and teaching leadership, and for senior students, including Masters and Doctoral candidates researching leadership related topics." - Sarah I. Leberman, Massey University, New Zealand"Overall, ‘Leadership-as-practice’ is a significant contribution to the extant literature on leadership from which a more critically and reflexive form of management education (Clegg & Ross-Smith, 2003; Cuncliffe, 2002; 2004) will undoubtedly benefit. As such, we may not only wish to incorporate it into our students’ reading materials but also consider ways in which MBA, EMBA and other postgraduate students may be able to ‘experience’ the potential of L-A-P in and outside of the classroom: through raising awareness about leadership as an emergent social process; strengthening reflexivity about existing leadership practices; bringing in the learner’s contexts more explicitly; and taking into consideration the emotional and political dynamics of their organisational environments (Denyson & Turnbull, Chapter 13). The book deserves the attention of management educators and may indeed assist in informing much broader classroom discussions around current issues of social divisiveness, ethical decision-making, and corporate social responsibility." - H. Heizmann, University of Technology Sydney"Overall, I found this to be a most interesting book. A persuasive case is made for ‘leadership as practice’ as an emerging paradigm for research, theory and practice. The book has a strong theoretical basis and will appeal to academics concerned with the discursive and practice turn in the social sciences, leadership, action learning and action research. It will also be relevant to practitioners who have an interest in the theoretical underpinnings of action learning and research. Although this is not a ‘how to’ text, it gives many practice examples, illustrative of a range of L-A-P concerns. It is certainly a welcome contribution to ways of making sense of leadership and leadership practice which leave heroic and hierarchical perspectives behind and instead foreground it as more emergent, complex and socially constructed human interaction." - Jean Kellie, Hull University Business School, University of Hull"From a readership perspective, this book provides an interesting addition to the literature, and I would commend colleagues to add it to their collection. For me, the text is best suited to the postgraduate market and will provide an interesting read for many MBA and other postgraduate programmes with significant leadership content. In addition, strong undergraduate students will also be challenged by many of the ideas, and the book will be a useful addition to the reading list for my honours-level students." - Alan Johnston, York Business School, York St. John University, UK"To help close the gap, this book presents a collection of essays on leadership as practice (LAP), a "movement" (as Raelin calls it with an acknowledged wink) that seeks to refocus the camera lens from the foreground of the leader to the previously blurry background of the work context, including the menial, profoundly unsexy, and thankless tasks that the bulk of leaders engage with in the stark reality of Monday morning to Friday afternoon." - Tom Whelan, Director of Corporate Research Training Industry, Inc. Book SynopsisCollege Student Leadership Development introduces the idea that we all play a part in producing leadership and that learning how to participate in the process of leadership is something that all college students need to learn as part of their college academic experience. Rather than approaching leadership from the traditional model emphasizing specific skill sets, this book acquaints students with how to learn leadership using the ReAChS model of leadership development (Reflection, Assessment, Challenge, Support). It then encourages students to directly engage their own experiences to hone their leader identity and understanding of leadership as well as improve their leadership knowledge and skills. Step-by-step exercises lead students in reflecting on their experiences, assessing themselves, choosing challenges, creating support networks, and finally capturing and communicating to others what they have learned. College Student Leadership Development so wonderfully addresses "how" students should learn leadership by drawing on Sessa’s vast experience and research. In business, education, health and many other fields there is an increasing acknowledgement of the importance of innovation and recognition of what is lost when creativity is lacking. In Coaching Creativity, Jen Gash explores the history, science and practice of creativity by artists, makers and creators, translating this into practical advice for coaches. The book investigates the concept of creativity and examines the theories surrounding it from psychological, neurological and biological perspectives. It then takes a more practical look at the doing of creativity and explores the use of creativity in therapeutic settings. A model of coaching creativity is presented which acknowledges its diverse and individual nature. The BDEFS provides valuable information regarding specific executive functioning deficits, including those found in ADHD. This scale does what a good assessment instrument should: not only does it answer questions regarding diagnosis, but it also helps clinicians identify target skills and behaviors for intervention."--Peg Dawson, EdD, Center for Learning and Attention Disorders, Portsmouth, New Hampshire "The BDEFS ushers in an era of more specific and comprehensive behavioral assessment of executive functioning difficulties encountered by adults during major functional activities. The scales are well designed to be both clinician and patient friendly. The content is broader than other available scales and the normative observations are carefully derived and extensive. Behavioral items are focused around common daily activities rather than clinical symptoms, and thus can be applied in a variety of settings. The combination of self- and other-report forms, as well as long and short forms, provides depth and flexibility. This scale is a powerful complement to traditional executive function tests."--Paul J. Information Age Publishing Culture, Work and Psychology: Invitations to
Book SynopsisThis books arises from the observation that mainstream psychology, especially work and organisational psychology (WOP), suffers from critical limitations in its attempts to deal with the complexities of work as a cultural phenomenon. We can only mention a few examples here. In the WOP field, especially in Anglo- Saxon tradition, work experiences are seen through the lenses of traditional behavioural approaches, whereas culture is seen as a `software of the mind’, to use a popular definition found in this field (based on cross-cultural mainstream psychology). `Competences’, to take another example, are thought of as something that do or do not people have inside them. Suffering, like stress (a common work-based problem of our times), is considered to be dependent on a person’s personality, perceptions or as a set of behaviours triggered by facing an `objective’ environment. Even meaning-making process can be found to be defined from a WOP mainstream point of view: meanings are `social cognitions’ shared by people by means of unidirectional socialisation processes. Therefore, the goal of this book is to deliver to the reader a new and challenging theoretical and methodological tool box, inspired by insights developed from a broad cultural psychological perspective. Its focus is on the consideration of work and organisations based on core concepts developed inside cultural psychology. Therefore, it is designed to discuss potential extensions of these concepts to work psychology.

Book SynopsisThis book offers an approach to business and executive coaching that properly aligns the practice in the culture of business through the use of a relational "coaching axis" that helps to manage the complexity of the organisation and the individual as dual clients.Business and executive coaching occurs within an organisational context with the goal of promoting success at all levels of the organisation by affecting the actions of those being coached (Worldwide Association of Business Coaches, 2007). This form of coaching is distinct from other types in two ways, firstly it is focused on achieving business outcomes, and secondly, both the individual being coached and the sponsoring organization are simultaneously the client. This book explains how a coach manages the complexity of helping these two clients by acting as a narrative bridge between their stories. It offers a relational approach which resists remedial or curative notions born from coaching's human science roots and instead aligns to workplace realities. Chapters 1 -3 explore three interlocking paradigms for coaching that culturally align to the context of business. Firstly, in working with the complexity of client, systems theory is explored. Secondly, in working with the complexity of organisational culture, the notion of culture is unpacked. Thirdly, in exploring the complexity of theory, an eclectic and integrative theoretical approach is unpacked and the notion of the scientist-practitioner is explored. The remainder of the book explains the "Coaching on the Axis" approach. This approach captures the way coaching interfaces with business across three systemic dimensions situated on a hypothetical "axis." It further outlines a method to track themes, elicit insights and test actions systemically along this axis using a narrative methodology. Finally, a case study is provided. Ultimately, the book aims to assist coaches in properly aligning their practice with business, honouring the culture from which this work derives its legitimacy and sanction, and significantly increasing its likelihood of success.Trade Review'At last, a sophisticated and business-savvy account of business and executive coaching.
