  • Gringo Love

University of Toronto Press Gringo Love

Book SynopsisIn the city of Natal in northeastern Brazil, several local women negotiate the terms of their intimate relationships with foreign tourists, or gringos, in a situation often referred to as "sex tourism." These women have different experiences, but they share a similar desire to "escape" the social conditions of their lives in Brazil. Based on original ethnographic research and presented in graphic form, Gringo Love explores the hopes, dreams, and realities of these women against a backdrop of deep social inequality and increasing state surveillance leading up to the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. It touches on important contemporary issues, including sexual economics, transnational mobility, romantic imaginaries, gender representation, race and inequality, and visual methods. The graphic story is accompanied by analysis and contextual discussion, which encourage readers to engage with the narrative and expand their understanding of the broader sociaTrade Review"This graphic novel is a much needed addition to libraries. There are a lot of books out there that vilify people in this industry, and it is important for people to view this subject from another point of view." -- 2020 VLA Graphic Novel Diversity Award Committee"Gringo Love boldly does something less common in anthropology: it uses an experimental visual medium and a collaborative process based on generously shared time and stories to tell a reality-based tale that complicates and broadens the space in which a politicized and controversial practice can be understood. By visualizing those often made invisible in the mainstream discourse of sex tourism, Carrier-Moisan and her collaborators bring us into lives on the ground." -- Colin Willox, Maynooth University * Visual Anthropology Review *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Note to the Reader Lexicon Part I: Arrivals Field notes Part II: Gringo Love? • Medieval Travel and Travelers

University of Toronto Press Medieval Travel and Travelers

Book SynopsisIt is widely believed that people living in the Middle Ages seldom traveled. But, as Medieval Travel and Travelers reveals, many medieval people and not only Marco Polo were on the move for a variety of different reasons. Assuming no previous knowledge of medieval civilizations, this volume allows readers to experience the excitement of men and women who ventured into new lands. By addressing cross-cultural interaction, religion, and travel literature, the collection sheds light on how travel shaped the way we perceive the world, while also connecting history to the contemporary era of globalization. Including a mix of complete sources, excerpts, and images, Medieval Travel and Travelers provides readers with opportunities for further reflection on what medieval people expected to find in foreign locales, while sparking curiosity about undiscovered spaces and cultures.Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction Chapter One: Mapping Out Journeys 1. • Spensers Famous Flight

University of Toronto Press Spensers Famous Flight

Book SynopsisIn Spenser's famous Flight, Patrick Cheney challenges the received wisdom about the shape and goal of Spenser's literary career. He contends that Spenser's idea of a literary career is not strictly the convential Virgilian pattern of pastoral to epic, but a Christian revision of that pattern in light of Petrarch and the Reformation.Cheney demonstrates that, far from changing his mind about his career as a result of disillusionment, Spenser embarks upon and completes a daring progress that secures his status as an Orphic poet.In October, Spenser calls his idea of a literary career the 'famous flight.' Both classical and Christian culture has authorized the myth of the winged poet as a primary myth of fame and glory. Cheney shows that throughout his poetry Spenser relies on an image of flight to accomplish his highest goal.

Book SynopsisExplores the significant impact of this countercultural figure of postwar Japan.Trade Review"Steven C. Ridgely’s Japanese Counterculture is invaluable—a long overdue study of Terayama’s complex oeuvre, carefully researched and brilliantly argued. But Japanese Counterculture offers much more: it proposes to redefine the practice of cultural and countercultural studies, and even more significantly, the very nature of global culture. Therein lie its force, ingenuity, and radicality." —Akira Mizuta Lippit, University of Southern California"Ridgely’s exciting book opens Terayama’s world—his work as a poet, playwright/theater director, radio dramatist, filmmaker—and most importantly conveys the feeling and air of the times, the ‘tactical’ interventions of this fascinating figure within the space of counterculture." —Miryam Sas, University of California, BerkeleyTable of ContentsContents Introduction: Global Counterculture, Visual Counterculture 1. • Colonial Pathologies

    Duke University Press Colonial Pathologies

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA groundbreaking history of the role of science and medicine in the American colonization of the Philippines from 1898 through the 1930s.Trade Review“Colonial Pathologies does the work that many colonial histories profess to do but rarely carry out: it provides us with a meticulous, dynamic, and grounded analysis of how political rationalities were honed and colonial and colonized subjectivities were formed through the changing medical perceptions and practices of U.S. imperial policy. Not least, it demonstrates how Philippines colonial public health regimes provided the template for subsequent healthcare in the Philippines, in the United States, and in international health services more broadly.”—Ann Laura Stoler, editor of Haunted by Empire: Geographies of Intimacy in North American History“An imaginative and well-informed study of what might be called the bodily dimension of imperial relationships in the Philippines. Warwick Anderson explores the subjective and multidimensional aspects of the formally humane and objective realm of tropical public health, illuminating the American colonial experience and foreshadowing ambiguities and paradoxes in what we have come to call global health.”—Charles E. Rosenberg, author of No Other Gods: On Science and American Social Thought“It’s difficult to overstate the significance of this book. Its account of hygiene as the means for establishing ‘biomedical citizenship’ in the Philippines under U.S. rule is carefully crafted and powerfully argued. Sympathetically deconstructing the assertiveness and delusions of white colonial medical practitioners beset by the specters of native bodily excess, Warwick Anderson shows how race and biology defined civic identities in the colony and the metropole alike. A path-breaking work on imperial medicine, it is certain to attract a wide readership.”—Vicente L. Rafael, author of The Promise of the Foreign: Nationalism and the Technics of Translation in the Spanish Philippines“Colonial Pathologies is a highly original work that, through the anxious eyes of its American architects, successfully illuminates the multidimensional U. S. colonial-medical state in the early twentieth-century Philippines. It has much to teach scholars about U. S. empire building, colonial medicine, race, and gender.” -- Paul Kramer * Bulletin of the History of Medicine *“Colonial Pathologies is a path-breaking study of an aspect of late colonialism that is all too frequently neglected: imperial medicine. Anderson demonstrates how hygiene and sanitation became the hallmarks of a distinctly Americanised ‘civilising process’ that attempted to impose foreign rule over an archipelago of subjects and protect those entrusted with its mission from the baneful effects of having to do so in a tropical setting.” -- Greg Bankoff * Anthropological Forum *“Anderson has done an extraordinarily thorough job of research, and he skillfully employs the rich material he found regarding several key players. . . . Colonial Pathologies helps us understand just how complex and changing the reciprocal interactions between various imperial projects—in this case, the American project in the Philippines—and Western medical thinking really were.” -- James C. Mohr * Pacific Historical Review *“Anderson's achievement . . . One of the finest and most finely nuanced accounts yet of colonial medicine in Asia (or, indeed, its sister continents), Colonial Pathologies provides an accessible narrative which students of European and American public health would read with profit.” -- David Arnold * Social History of Medicine *“Warwick Anderson’s scholarship is well known for its intellectual rigor and its stimulating originality. . . . Without ignoring the particularities of the colonial history of the Philippines or of ‘American way’ of public health, Anderson offers above all, in my view, a fine reflection on the culture of biomedicalization, the questions of power and the negotiations that are part of the process, and the unexpected results that emerge, both locally and globally.” -- Laurence Monnais * American Ethnologist *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments vii Introduction 1 1. 2 in stock

Book SynopsisIn Sex, or the Unbearable two of our leading theorists of sexuality, politics, and culture engage in intense and animated dialogue about living with—and imagining alternatives to—what's overwhelming in sex, friendship, social inequality, and one's relation to oneself.Trade Review“What’s lovely about this exchange is that Berlant and Edelman’s mutually locked horns don’t make us feel as though a cleverer person has already figured things out and we’re simply not smart or qualified enough to piece together the unspoken counterarguments they would have to our doubts.” -- Colin Low * Against the Hype *"This collaboration between Berlant and Edelman has a feel for the ecology of thinking as it passes between two points. Like holding one’s breath under water or passing a balloon back and forth without its touching the floor, these conversations illuminate the sense of timing with which ideas respond to and are shaped by each other." -- Michael D. Snediker * Theory & Event *"Berlant and Edelman’s three-act dialogue is wonderfully intriguing, especially in regard to how the dialogue itself bears witness to the intellectual process of ‘thinking through’ in the dialogic form." -- Marcie Bianco * Lambda Literary Review *“Berlant and Edelman take debates around the antisocial thesis as a point of departure to theorize the importance of relationality, loss and repair, sovereignty, and negativity in the politics and ethics of queer theory. Despite the overlapping topics of interest that have marked their respective works, their varying theoretical approaches make for a smart, enlivening, and productive conversation in Sex, or the Unbearable.” -- Fiona I. B. Ngô * American Studies *“While Berlant and Edelman do not address popular romances, their work can be informative to the work of romance scholars in tackling issues of the place of sex and the erotic, especially within some romance tropes, such as discovery of a new sexual orientation plots in queer romances, or submissive-for-you plots in many erotic romances of all orientations.” -- Amanda Jo Hobson * Journal of Popular Romance Studies *“Among the book’s major attractions is its inventive dialogic form, and Berlant and Edelman’s masterful close readings of diverse media. The authors alternate named passages, riffing on each others’ ideas and including their moments of complex ambiguous affect, including responses to the other of misappropriation, frustration, delight and surprise, so often elided in collaborative critical theory. This dialogic form and its auto-analysis is one of the great intellectual joys of the book, a fascinating and inventive device well-suited to a discussion of the complex investments subjects have in relationality, including sex, conversation, and pedagogy.” -- Jessica Durham * Colloquy *“These two authors offer an intense and highly insightful account of interactions between two subjects that, I suggest, could be fruitfully applied to understanding encounters in organizations. They show some of the complexities of relationality: it is violent, pleasurable, productive, a scene of fantasy and misrecognition, all these and more.” -- Nancy Harding * Gender, Work & Organization *“As an overall project, Sex, or the Unbearable pushes forward the debate on queer negativity and antisociality, whilst also contributing to contemporary queer, feminist and cultural theory’s wider critiques of academic knowledge production and the political utility of academic scholarship.” -- Kathryn Medien and Jacob Breslow * Sexualities *Table of ContentsPreface vii 1. • Beautiful Data

    Duke University Press Beautiful Data

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis Beautiful Data is both a history of big data and interactivity, and a sophisticated meditation on ideas about vision and cognition in the second half of the twentieth century. Contending that our forms of attention, observation, and truth are contingent and contested, Orit Halpern historicizes the ways that we are trained, and train ourselves, to observe and analyze the world. Tracing the postwar impact of cybernetics and the communication sciences on the social and human sciences, design, arts, and urban planning, she finds a radical shift in attitudes toward recording and displaying information. These changed attitudes produced what she calls communicative objectivity: new forms of observation, rationality, and economy based on the management and analysis of data. Halpern complicates assumptions about the value of data and visualization, arguing that changes in how we manage and train perception, and define reason and intelligence, are also transformations in governmentalTrade Review"Overall... this is quite an interesting read, illustrating how a single idea (cybernetics) can permeate all walks of life, at least for a time." -- Alexander von Lünen * British Journal for the History of Science *"...Halpern’s brilliant and blow-by-blow exposition on the transformation of our sense and reason in Beautiful Data certainly enriches our critical and historical understanding of important parts of contemporary society. This book contributes to the fields of communication studies, media studies, and science, technology and society (STS), as well as the history of science." -- Yasuhito Abe * International Journal of Communication *"Bringing together the history of science with studies of media, affect, and aesthetics, Beautiful Data offers a compelling account of the epistemological infrastructures of the digital that have, since 1945, radically changed the ways we see, interpret, and think." -- Jessica Hurley * American Literature *"Beautiful Data is an innovative, informative and highly enjoyable read for those who often find themselves hovering between disciplinary fields, offering a reflective history of early cybernetics, art, design, psychology and political science. Halpern guides her readers gracefully thorugh a history of interactivity between humans and machines, the archive and the interface." -- Amanda Tully * Science & Technology Studies *"Beautiful Data will no doubt comprise a critical touchstone for future reflections on 'big data' and where it is taking us." -- Hallam Stevens * Historical Studies in the Natural Sciences *"Beautiful Data is a significant work of contemporary theory . . . [that] lends difficult, rich new insights to unthought histories of digital perception, and to possible futures we might not only long for but actively build." -- Jackie Orr * Isis *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments vii Prologue. • Ontopower

    Duke University Press Ontopower

Book SynopsisIn this original theory of power, Brian Massumi explains how the logic of preemption governs U.S. military policy in the War on Terror and how that logic spills over from the war front to the home front. Threats are now felt into reality and power refocuses on what may emerge. The mode of power embodying the logic of preemption is ontopower.Trade Review"Brian Massumi’s latest addition to our understanding of power may be the most important addition to grand strategy since On War. ... Ontopower is less a guidebook than a warning against assuming we will be right. Without making a moral argument, Brian Massumi effectively describes the moral limitations of the power to preempt, the rewriting of history through the actions of the present, the confirmation of what could have been into what was. It should be studied by practitioners of power—professionals who owe it to the country to have discussions now, so as to have answers when policy demands action." -- Phil Reynolds * Air Force Research Institute *"Without making a moral argument, Massumi effectively describes the moral limitations of the power to preempt, the rewriting of history through the actions of the present, and the confirmation of what could have been into what was. This book should be studied by practitioners of power—professionals who owe it to the country to have discussions now, so as to have answers when policy demands action." -- Philip W. Reynolds * Parameters *"Brian Massumi is a gifted writer with the intellectual heft to bring . . . questions together and make the metaphysical visible and intelligible. The writing achieves a lightning strike of insight regularly enough to reward commitment. The prose is spiced and leavened with sentences that hit the bull’s eye on complex concepts." -- Jude McCulloch * Left History *"Ontopower is a significant book that deals with contemporary problems without losing its intellectual allure and philosophical perspicacity. Its captivating commentaries on the reconfiguration of power, as well as the proposal of its own vocabulary to deal with this new phenomena of power, will certainly appeal to readers interested in understanding the intermingling of politics, power, and today’s society." -- Samuel Mateus * International Journal of Communication *"Ontopower is an impressively dense and insightful inquiry into the global consequences of contemporary United States security policy and practice. . . . [The] immense analytical depth alone will make Ontopower impossible to ignore for scholars on the field of critical theory interested in the 'war on terror.'" -- Philipp Kender * Society & Space *"Ontopower is clearly a well-researched and well-argued text. Whether or not one agrees with the principles of this new theory of power, it is undeniable that Massumi has presented a thorough and rigorous examination of power and the logic of preemption.... It offers excellent insight into the importance of perception in modern politics, and thus warfare, which is essential knowledge for students and practitioners of governance and security." -- Courteney J O’Connor * Political Studies Review *Table of ContentsPreface vii Part One: Powers 1. • Color of Violence The INCITE Anthology

Duke University Press Color of Violence The INCITE Anthology

Book SynopsisPresenting the fierce and vital writing of organizers, lawyers, scholars, poets, and policy makers, Color of Violence radically repositions the antiviolence movement by putting women of color at its center, covers violence against women of color in its myriad manifestations, and maps strategies of movement building and resistance.Trade Review"Anyone who's complacent about the successes of the feminist movement should dip into this collection . . . about the women left behind, left out, or simply forgotten." * Publishers Weekly *"A powerful guide for activists, educators, community organizers, and anyone asking the question, 'What would it take to end violence against women of color?'" * WATER *"Color of Violence . . . boldly challenges conventional feminist thought and contemporary antiviolence initiatives. . . . [Its] contributors reveal necessary truths about the failures of traditional social service and criminal justice-oriented approaches to ending violence against women. . . . INCITE! challenges us to look beyond the conventional doctrine on violence against women that has influenced and sometimes hindered contemporary antiviolence organizing to establish a new framework for activism that acknowledges and incorporates our diverse, sometimes divergent, perspectives as women of color." -- Keidra Chaney * Bitch *"This anthology would serve as an invaluable classroom source on Third Wave feminism, antiracist social movements, and social justice movements in the United States in the twenty-first century." -- Sharmila Rudrappa * Journal of American Ethnic History *"These compelling essays are written by women who bring passion, energy, anger, and insight to an injustice that has taken a back seat to other social justice issues: violence perpetrated on women of color. The writings are impressively comprehensive in their global scope, historical insight, and unyielding passion. The book reminds readers that the antiviolence movement, although perhaps once at risk of fading, remains profoundly important, especially to women, and most especially to women of color. . . . These bold women occasionally shame, always inform, and often challenge readers to finish the book and embark on the cause of finally ending the violence that women of color have too long endured." -- D. A. Mathews * Choice *"A deeply thoughtful contribution to radical anti-violence activism . . . Colors of Violence engages a complex and diverse dialogue about forms of violence, resistance, and movement building. . . . [It] does a skilled job of instigating a thoughtful and complex discussion on a topic that has not received adequate attention even among radicals." -- Chloe Tribich * Against the Current *"Consistently, the articles discuss the importance of and strategies around movement-building among communities of color, specifically radical women of color, in their shared struggles for liberation. They also speak to a great need for activists to learn about intersecting forms of oppression that may be undervalued or ignored. . . . And lest we forget, the book does not stand alone. The women of Color of Violence: The INCITE! Anthology are not only writers, speakers, poets, and academics but also activists, concerned with bringing about the change that they write. We can be part of their liberation, and our own, by listening to their voices." -- Katie Seitz * Off Our Backs *"Every essay in this collection reveals another critical aspect of being a woman of color in the United States today. . . . It is an excellent starting point for understanding some of the issues today for women of color actively working for social change." -- Rachel Pepper * Curve *"Color of Violence . . . challenges every reader to recognize and fight the subtle and not so subtle forms of violence that manifests and is inflicted upon women of color." -- Vernetta K. There may be no greater testament to the value and urgency of decolonial approaches to embodied vernacular knowledge today." -- Kimberly Richards * TDR: The Drama Review *"Gómez-Barris’s compelling text grapples with the destruction and death dealt by extractive industries. . . . This is all provocative and engaging material, particularly when set against political economic critiques of extractivism." -- Joe Bryan * The Americas *"Gómez-Barris’s writing provides an anecdote to technocratic visions of 'green capitalism' by foregrounding questions of justice, identity, and the contingency of politics. Scholars interested in the debates animating anti-extractive social movements in Latin America and beyond should begin here." -- Matthew Shutzer * Enterprise & Society *"The Extractive Zone contributes an important feminist and indigenous hemispheric genealogy and cultural studies lens on current political economic debates circulating in Latin America and beyond regarding alternatives to growth-oriented, capitalist and extractive-based models of development. The book also complicates heroic and romantic readings of the conceptual and legal mechanisms surrounding the state-based rhetoric of buen vivir in Latin American constitutionalism that too often appear uncritically examined in scholarship produced in the global North." -- Kristina Lyons * Journal of Latin American Studies *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Preface. Book SynopsisLembke concludes that the prescription drug epidemic is a symptom of a faltering health care system, the solution for which lies in rethinking how health care is delivered.Trade ReviewA thought-provoking study that all healthcare professionals and patients should read. Library Journal ... a story with mythic resonance. Times Higher Education "... excellent... It's a short book, concisely written, giving plenty of examples of patients' stories while at the same time showing trends in policy and national practice." Metapsychology Drug Dealer, MD offers a fresh, comprehensive perspective on addiction and prescription drugs. The patient narratives provide compassionate, albeit sometimes extreme, examples of how the medical field has failed patients, while the data provide the facts needed to prove that this truly is a system failure rather than any one person's fault. This thought-provoking book should be a must-read for medical trainees, providers, and health policy leaders working at the forefront of addressing the prescription drug epidemic. Health Affairs Anna Lembke sheds light on the rise of prescription drug addiction in the USA, fuelled in part by the actions of doctors and the structure of the US healthcare system. London School of Economics Review of Books ... The book is written in a clear, easy-to-read style with lay readers in mind. Pharmaceutical Journal ... once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Drug Dealer, MD ... the most important medical book of the decade. -- Abigail Zuger Undark As far as I am concerned, "Drug Dealer, M.D.," in less than 200 unassuming, readable, and carefully referenced pages, may be the most important medical book of the decade for finally getting the story of this epidemic exactly right... every doctor and concerned citizen can take a first step in the right direction by reading Anna Lembke's book.Table of ContentsContents1. Book SynopsisLightning through the Clouds is the first English-language life-and-times biography of ‘Izz al-Din al-Qassam, a preeminent figure who helped to reshape the political and religious landscape of the region. A Syrian-born, Egyptian-educated cleric, he went from the battlefields of World War I to join the anticolonialist fight against the French in Syria. Sentenced to be executed by the French military, he managed to escape to Palestine, where he became an increasingly popular presence, moved by the plight of the poor and disenfranchised. Outraged by British rule and the encroachment of Zionism, he formed a secret society to resist the colonization of Palestine first by the British and then by Jewish immigrants from Europe, once again taking up arms and advocating for a moral, political, and military jihad as the only solution. His death at the hands of Palestine Police in 1935 drew thousands to his funeral and sparked the 19361939 Arab Revolt. His influence continueTrade Review"[A] masterful study of [‘Izz al-Din al-Qassam]...The judicious analysis and research found in Lightning through the Clouds allows us to cast aside the myth and lore surrounding this iconic figure and uncover the many complex historical forces that shaped his life. Lightning through the Clouds is not only a welcome contribution to Palestinian studies but a valuable addition to the larger field of modern Middle Eastern history." * Journal of Palestine Studies *A welcome scholarly publication...Sanagan’s choice of narrating the social history of ʿIzz Al-Din Al-Qassam as the representative of resistance in the modern Middle East offers a valuable contribution to both the biography of the iconic hero and the historiography of Mandate Palestine during its middle period. The study would benefit scholars and students of history, religious studies, and Middle East and cultural studies. * Arab Studies Quarterly *This biography of [‘Izz al-Din] al-Qassam places him not only in the context of his social and political settings, but also allows us to see him within a wider movement in which his charisma and community connections made him not a single, dominating figure, but first amongst equals...Sanagan has thus succeeded in writing a rare book, one that combines the compelling narrative thrust of a biography with a breadth of view that tells the reader something genuinely new about the development of Palestine and Levantine anti-colonial politics over the first third of the twentieth century. * Contemporary Levant *Table of Contents List of Figures List of Abbreviations Note on Transliterations Maps Prologue Introduction Chapter 1. • Building Socialism

Book SynopsisFollowing a decade of U.S. bombing campaigns that obliterated northern Vietnam, East Germany helped Vietnam rebuild in an act of socialist solidarity. In Building Socialism Christina Schwenkel examines the utopian visions of an expert group of Vietnamese and East German urban planners who sought to transform the devastated industrial town of Vinh into a model socialist city. Drawing on archival and ethnographic research in Vietnam and Germany with architects, engineers, construction workers, and tenants in Vinh's mass housing complex, Schwenkel explores the material and affective dimensions of urban possibility and the quick fall of Vinh's new built environment into unplanned obsolescence. She analyzes the tensions between aspirational infrastructure and postwar uncertainty to show how design models and practices that circulated between the socialist North and the decolonizing South underwent significant modification to accommodate alternative cultural logics and ideas about urban futurity. By documenting the building of Vietnam's first planned city and its aftermath of decay and repurposing, Schwenkel argues that underlying the ambivalent and often unpredictable responses to modernist architectural forms were anxieties about modernity and the future of socialism itself.Trade Review“A triumph of interdisciplinary and transnational scholarship! Following a compelling new case of international ‘high-socialist’ architecture, Christina Schwenkel bridges the histories of and scholarship on Eastern European and Asian socialisms. The oft-maligned but poorly understood city of Vinh proves to be an unexpected center of international solidarity and a riveting example of human resilience. Its story offers a significant perspective on Vietnamese history, socialist internationalism, postwar reconstruction, post-socialism, neoliberal redevelopment, and urban history.” -- Erik Harms, author of * Luxury and Rubble: Civility and Dispossession in the New Saigon *“In this extraordinary book, the anthropological and architectural histories of the city of Vinh emerge between the hour zero when B-52s fly over Vinh and the ebbing of obsolescence. Christina Schwenkel addresses urban space and design in an enlightening and unsettling manner, evoking and explaining the ‘building of socialism’ as both a Vietnamese and an East German phenomenon in its postcolonial and postmodern contexts.” -- Rudolf Mrázek, Professor Emeritus of History, University of Michigan“Schwenkel explores the main built legacy of this alliance [between Vietnam and East Germany], the Quang Trung housing estate in Vinh.... The story she has to tell, and the research she has undertaken in several years living on the estate...[is] informative, surprising, and often very moving.” -- Owen Hatherley * Jacobin Magazine *“A model of transnational urban research, Building Socialism uncovers the history of Vinh’s role as a global planning hub, while also attending to the afterlife of socialist modernism for those residing in the city today." -- Katherine Zubovich * The Metropole *"Building Socialism is . . . an indispensable addition to our understanding of urban Asia." -- Abidin Kusno * Journal of Asian Studies *"The book offers a novel and broader understanding of the urban development projects in postwar Vietnam with its social and political trajectories aided by an impressive collection of archival material. . . . Altogether, Christina Schwenkel’s work is a refreshing and groundbreaking addition not only to the study of the global history of the GDR but, first and foremost, to the study of Vietnam’s building of socialism." -- Katrin Bahr * German Studies Review *"Exemplary scholarship. . . . The book's theoretical reflections challenge some calcified notions in current scholarship and intelligentsia, and show the incredibly similar housing experiences and cultural-imperialist tendencies of both capitalism and socialism." -- Esra Ackan * Berlin Journal *"Building Socialism is a remarkably illuminating transnational and interdisciplinary study of socialist nation building, examined through the lenses of internationalism, urban planning and architecture, and an ethnography of a mass housing estate. . . . The author very much succeeds in presenting a cohesive, theoretically rich work of in-depth investigation." -- Hazel Hahn * H-Urban *"Building Socialism is a captivating, imaginative, and significant contribution in anthropology, Vietnamese history, urban history, and history of urban planning. It is suitable for assigning in both graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses." -- Hazel Hahn * H-Urban, H-Net Reviews *"This engaging book ties together the legacies of the Vietnam War, East German urbanism, and contemporary neoliberal development to produce a narrative that is greater than the sum of its parts, shedding much-needed light on the complexity of modernism’s social and material durabilities." -- Samantha Maurer Fox * Anthropological Review *"Though somewhat theoretical, this book is ultimately accessible to a broad readership. It will be of most interest to scholars and students of urban planning, urban anthropology, and urban studies. Highly recommended. Lower division undergraduates through faculty; professionals" -- M. E. Pfeifer * Choice *"The book’s strength is that it expands our understanding of the multiplicity of urbanisms. . . . Duke University Press Struggles for the Human

Book SynopsisIn Struggles for the Human, Lara Montesinos Coleman blends ethnography, political philosophy, and critical theory to reorient debates on human rights through attention to understandings of legality, ethics, and humanity in anticapitalist and decolonial struggle. Drawing on her extensive involvement with grassroots social movements in Colombia, Coleman observes that mainstream expressions of human rights have become counterparts to capitalist violence, even as this discourse disavows capitalism’s deadly implications. She rejects claims that human rights are inherently tied to capitalism, liberalism, or colonialism, instead showing how human rights can be used to combat these forces. Coleman demonstrates that social justice struggles that are rooted in marginalized communities’ lived experiences can reframe human rights in order to challenge oppressive power structures and offer a blueprint for constructing alternative political economies. By examining the practice of Trade Review“Lara Montesinos Coleman’s arresting and beautiful ethnography of Colombian resistance movements doubles as an informed and sophisticated critical intervention into the controversy about the meanings of human rights in an age of neoliberalism. Bypassing the politics of struggle, the book proves, is a mistake for anyone rushing to bury—or praise—human rights today.” -- Samuel Moyn, Yale University“In Struggles for the Human, Lara Montesinos Coleman brings together a blistering critique of mainstream human rights practices and a nuanced account of neoliberalism with a defense of the continued use of human rights by radical social movements. Coleman shows how human rights retain a disruptive potential and can contribute to the dismantling of capitalist structures of impunity. Breaking new ground in our thinking about rights, capitalist power, and emancipation, this is an indispensable book for all those interested in the politics of human rights, radical social movements, and political philosophy.” -- Jessica Whyte, author of * The Morals of the Market: Human Rights and the Rise of Neoliberalism *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments xi Introduction. • Distressing Language

New York University Press Distressing Language

Book SynopsisThe role of disability and deafness in art Distressing Language is full of mistakeserrors of hearing, speaking, writing, and understanding. Michael Davidson engages the role of disability and deafness in contemporary aesthetics, exploring how physical and intellectual differences challenge our understanding of art and poetry. Where hearing and speaking are considered normative conditions of the human, what happens when words are misheard and misspoken? How have writers and artists, both disabled and non-disabled, used error as generative elements in contesting the presumed value of "sounding good"? Distressing Language grows out of the author's experience of hearing loss in which misunderstandings have become a daily occurrence. Davidson maintains that verbal confusions are less an aberration in understanding than a component of new knowledge. Davidson discusses a range of sites, from captioning errors and Bad Lip Reads on YouTube, to the deaf artist Christine Sun Kim's audiovisual installations, and a poetic reinterpretation of the Biblical Shibboleth responding to the atrocities of the Holocaust. Deafness becomes a guide in each chapter of Distressing Language, giving us a closer look at a range of artistic mediums and how artists are working with the axiom of "error" to produce novel subjecthoods and possibilities.Trade ReviewDrawing on his own experience of increasing deafness, Davidson provides an engrossing look into the ways that slips or unusual forms of language can unexpectedly lead to new meanings and beauty. Distressing Language expertly weaves together modern poetry and fiction, popular culture, sign language art, theory, politics, and history, and is often as funny as it is profound. * Christopher Krentz, author of Writing Deafness: The Hearing Line in Nineteenth-Century American Literature *A highly original account of language, meaning, and sound, all framed through hearing loss. In Davidson’s account, meaning and value come from things not working the way they are supposed to. But rather than fetishizing technical glitch or aesthetic failure, he processes meaning through a disability hermeneutic. Throughout Distressing Language, the lines between poetry, sound art, and music are intentionally blurred and violated, while the meaning of sound is foregrounded as something especially important for those who have limited access to it. * Jonathan Sterne, McGill University *

Functional elements occupy only about 10 percent of the more than three billion base pairs in the human genome. Book SynopsisThe Plastic Turn offers a novel way of looking at plastic as the defining material of our age and at the plasticity of plastic as an innovative means of understanding the arts and literature. Ranjan Ghosh terms this approach the material-aesthetic and, through this concept, traces the emergence and development of plastic polymers along the same historical trajectory as literary modernism. Plastic''s growth as a product in the culture industry, its formation through multiple application and chemical syntheses, and its circulation via oceanic movements, Ghosh argues, correspond with, and offers novel insights into, developments in modernist literature and critical theory.Through innovative readings of canonical modernist texts, analyses of art works, and accounts of plastic''s devastating environmental impact, The Plastic Turn proposes plastic''s unique properties and destructive ubiquity as a theory machine to explain literature and life in tTrade ReviewGhosh uses plastic metaphorically and in an innovative way to advance understanding of literature, art, and life in the present. In so doing, he develops a new material aesthetic, one that offers a new way to view history, ontology, and ecology as well as literature and the arts. * Choice *Ecocriticism's ongoing heterogenization mirrors broader strides in the environmental humanities, including advances in green postcolonial analysis, ice humanities, plant studies, waste studies, and related ecohumanistic domains. As a case in point, a significant contribution to ecocritical examinations of waste is Ranjan Ghosh's The Plastic Turn. Through a material-aesthetic optic, Ghosh genealogizes the impact of the plastic polymer on critical theory and literary modernism * The Year's Work in Critical & Cultural Theory *An original and worthwhile reading experience for all those concerned with the humanities, the Anthropocene, the written word and the ecology of good and bad ideas. Book SynopsisIn The Fragile Balance of Terror, the foremost experts on nuclear policy and strategy offer insight into an era rife with more nuclear powers. Some of these new powers suffer domestic instability, others are led by pathological personalist dictators, and many are situated in highly unstable regions of the worlda volatile mix of variables. The increasing fragility of deterrence in the twenty-first century is created by a confluence of forces: military technologies that create vulnerable arsenals, a novel information ecosystem that rapidly transmits both information and misinformation, nuclear rivalries that include three or more nuclear powers, and dictatorial decision making that encourages rash choices. The nuclear threats posed by India, Pakistan, Iran, and North Korea are thus fraught with danger. The Fragile Balance of Terror, edited by Vipin Narang and Scott D. Sagan, brings together a diverse collection of rigorous and creative scholars who analyze how the nuclear landscape is changing for the worse. Scholars, pundits, and policymakers who think that the spread of nuclear weapons can create stable forms of nuclear deterrence in the future will be forced to think again. While many point to China''s ecological civilization programs as a new paradigm for global environmental governance, Jesse Rodenbiker argues that ecological redlining extends the reach of the authoritarian state.Although Chinese urban sustainability initiatives have driven millions of citizens from their land and housing, Rodenbiker shows that these migrants are not passive subjects of state policy. Instead, they creatively navigate resettlement processes in pursuit of their own benefit. However, their resistance is limited by varied forms of state-backed infrastructural violence. It reveals choices made by the tsarist strategists and commanders during the Russian-Ottoman wars, reflecting a general reconceptualization of the role of the people in modern warfare that took place during the nineteenth century. The book explores the tsarist military’s engagement with the population of the Balkans in the wake of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. In both countries, agents of the state, judiciary, and medical communities employed “social danger” theory to measure individuals’ latent criminality, conflating sexual and gender nonconformity with legal transgression. Argentine and Spanish queer and trans communities rejected this mode of external categorization. Drawing on Catholicism and camp cultures that stretched across the Atlantic, these communities constructed alternative models of identification that remediated state repression and sexual violence through the pursuit of the sublime, be it erotic, religious, or cultural. In this pursuit they drew ideological and iconographic material from the very institutions that were most antagonistic to t

Book SynopsisClaire Zimmerman reveals how photography profoundly influenced architectural design in the past century, playing an instrumental role in the evolution of modern architecture. This richly illustrated work shows, for the first time, how new ideas and new buildings arose from the interplay of photography and architecture—transforming how we see the world and how we act on it.Trade Review "This book is a wonderful, deeply researched, occasionally irreverent contribution to the English-language scholarship on modern architecture in Germany, with networks extending to the United States and England. An essential demonstration of the complex role(s) played by photography in the development of modern architecture in general that readily translates to other contexts, it will no doubt become a key reference in a scholarly milieu increasingly concerned with the interaction of architecture and media." —Reinhold Martin, Columbia University "Claire Zimmerman argues that not only did photography become in the twentieth century the principal way through which architecture was made known, but that at the same time photography brought about a shift in the aesthetics of architecture. This is an original and deeply-considered book that sets out a number of new ideas about modern architecture and its relationship to photography." —Adrian Forty, University College London "A serious and provocative work that brings a new approach to an interdisciplinary topic of increasing interest: the relationship between media and architecture."—ARLIS/NA"An indispensable repository of scholarly understanding of modernism in architecture, its photography, and the intricacies of their mutual relationship."—CHOICE"An evocative narration, constructed from a series of representative case studies emerging or unstable moments in the recent history of architecture."—Arquilecturas"Photographic Architecture in the Twentieth Century is a delightful tour de force that examines the interdisciplinary relationship between photography and architecture."—Traditional Dwellings and Settlements Review Table of ContentsContentsPrefaceAcknowledgmentsIntroduction. Book SynopsisIn this set of essays that cover the period from 1992 to 2012, Kobena Mercer uses a diasporic model of criticism to analyze the cross-cultural aesthetic practice of African American and black British artists and to show how their refiguring of visual representations of blackness transform perceptions of race. Trade Review"Travel & See benefits from a retrospective gaze; Mercer’s 30-year career gives him a judicious distance on some highly charged aesthetic movements and issues.... Mercer’s volume ... does not simply collect his past writings; it forces us to see international modernism in a way that has implications for future scholarship both within and beyond the field of black diasporic art. Travel & See posits Mercer as a chronicler not only of the field of contemporary art of the Afro-modern world, but of the inextricable ties of black diasporic and modernism itself." -- Sarah Lewis * Art in America *"Travel & See is an essential addition to any art historian’s library.... With Travel & See, Mercer further establishes himself as a leading figure in the field while also modeling the type of work that still needs to be done. The volume shows how Mercer’s writing redefined contemporary art history just as much as it shows how black diaspora artists changed contemporary art." -- Uchenna Itam * Shift *"Mercer's optimistic spirit encourages the reader to dare to travel in space and time in order to see better." -- Maureen Murphy * Critique d'art *"Subtleties of thought and elegance of expression are characteristic of Mercer's writings, read avidly by those art historians who have sought insight into Black British Cultural Studies, increasingly influential over the last thirty years.
