Book Synopsis‘A delightful introduction to an enduring subject’ – Angela Wintle, Sussex Life The most constructive and creative influence on English taste between the two wars, 'The Bloomsbury Group' was a union of friends who transformed British culture with their approach to art, design and society. The Group began the twentieth century with a desire to rebel and challenge what they felt were the religious, artistic, social and sexual taboos of Victorian England. Together they created a revolution in British style that resonates with contemporary painters, writers, actors, designers, fashion editors and publishers. This book explores the impact of Bloomsbury personalities on each other, as well as their legacy to the twenty-first century. Author Frances Spalding demonstrates how this network of artists, lovers and patrons recorded one another obsessively in both words and images. She presents twenty fascinating biographies, all of which are illustrated with paintings and intimate photographs created by members of the Group. Highlighted in her revealing account are: Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Vanessa and Clive Bell, Duncan Grant, Lady Ottoline Morrell, Roger Fry, J.M. Keynes, Lytton Strachey and Dora Carrington.

Book SynopsisCities are bad for us: polluted, noisy and fundamentally unnatural. We need green space, not concrete. Trees, not tower blocks. So goes the argument. But is it true? What would the city of the future look like if we tried to build a better life from the ground up? And would anyone want to live there? Here, Des Fitzgerald takes us on an urgent, unforgettable journey into the future of urban life, from shimmering edifices in the Arizona desert to forest-bathing in deepest Wales, and from rats in mazes to neuroscientific studies of the effects of our surroundings.Along the way, he reveals the deep-lying and often controversial roots of today's green city movement, and offers an argument for celebrating our cities as they are in all their raucous, constructed and artificial glory.

Her father''s suicide by drowning, and her relationship with a gifted young poet, both contribute to her emotional withdrawal and lonely demise. This edition of Shelley''s second novel, transcribed and introduced by Deanna Koretsky, explores the work both as a complex portrayal of taboo desires and as an intergenerational story of reckoning with the horrors of racism and patriarchy. Mathilda is often read as biographical, but this edition also highlights the issues of justice, gender, and rights. Illuminating Shelley''s evolving views on activism and social reform, sexual fluidity, and the racial implications of her feminist politics, Koretsky uncovers Shelley''s deep skepticism about the capacity of English society to

It completely changes the perspective on human health and who bears responsibility for protecting it. In an age when talk of the next pandemic seems ever-present, it also couldn't be more timely'' Nicola SturgeonHave you ever questioned why, despite the avalanche of self-help books and optimization hacks, we remain embroiled in multiple global health crises? Populations worldwide are gaining life-shortening excess weight (even in poorer countries), and water contamination is rampant (even in richer countries). In such dire circumstances, a gratitude journal won't help. The stark reality is that we've been sold a monumental lie. The coven women who choose to live together in old age of the present day. These bad' friends broke the rules about femininity they didn't write. Their relationships were controlled, patrolled and judged too intimate, too consuming and in some cases, too powerful. In this history of women''s friendship, celebrated cultural historian Tiffany Watt Smith reckons with the ways we understand this complex and vital connection. Anatomy & Physiology is the ideal introduction to the subject for student nurses, midwives, operating department practitioners, paramedics, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, trainee nursing associates, and other allied health professionals. Written in an engaging and accessible style, the book helps readers to: learn the language of anatomy and physiology by explaining new terms clearly in the text and in a comprehensive glossary understand the key anatomical structures and physiological functions appreciate what happens during disease, with boxes throughout to highlight the clinical relevance, and more detailed explanations of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and cancer apply this knowledge in healthcare contexts Bonus online material The following material to accompany the book is provided free of charge online: four additional chapters to help readers extend their knowledge a variety of self-assessment questions for every chapter The clear, reader-friendly presentation will aid understanding of a subject which is often viewed as challenging but is essential throughout a healthcare career.Trade Review‘I think it’d be a brilliant book for anyone beginning nursing or any allied health profession course come to that. A great introduction to absolutely everything!’ Senior lecturer, Birmingham City University‘The book is sincerely brilliant and exceeded my expectations. It is a wonderful addition to my nursing book library, one that I will definitely be referring to regularly... The tone is just right coming from a student point of view. It isn’t too complicated but delivers the content perfectly. It has a balanced, explanatory tone that I think is appropriate for all stages of the degree.’ Of the content: ‘This book allows you to go into as much depth as you want to. You have a choice to explore further because of the added boxes at the sides and the added online content.’ Of the illustrations: ‘The images and text are consistently approached in a logical way and given the space they need. They are a good size, colourful, easy to understand and well labelled to refer back to text and follow too. It can be so difficult to try and visualise certain aspects of anatomy and physiology. The authors have captured these brilliantly.’ Of the boxes in the margin: ‘I think this is a brilliant feature. Especially expansion for common terms or abbreviations, I think this is a really useful way of incorporating it altogether, for example in the respiratory section box 6.14 mentions “RR or ‘Resps’”. I haven’t come across another book that has done that in this way before.’ Of the online self-assessment questions: ‘Personally, I really like to be able to test by knowledge this way and I think that these sort of MCQ’s would have been really useful for when I did my A&P exam in my first year. I know other courses have A&P exams so I can see this free feature being really valuable to students. The critical thinking option is brilliant for further learning too. I can see how this could be really useful for classroom work and discussion.’ Student, Sheffield Hallam University‘I have to say everything about the book is excellent, from the layout, the clear concise text, the brilliant illustrations and the ease of using the website. Health professionals should find this book an invaluable resource, I just wish it had been published when I was training.’ Senior sister, Guys' and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust‘It has really enhanced my studying and allowed me to enjoy using this book as a study source. As a student, it can be so daunting to use A&P books to aid studying as I personally spend so much time trying to mentally translate text into an alternative which makes more sense. I also feel that the balance [between accessibility and authoritativeness] achieved within this book also replicates the balance demonstrated and expected by my university.’ Student, Robert Gordon University‘I find the illustrations a particularly effective aspect of this text as they succinctly illustrate certain anatomical and physiological aspects which can be difficult to visualise and explain via words. This text is written in an accessible and succinct way, allowing students to learn the key aspects of anatomy and physiology without getting bogged down in superfluous explanations, bolstered by its fantastic use of graphical aids.’ Student, Edge Hill University‘Such an excellent book. As a third year even I find it a great understanding level. Love the comments around neonatal/child. I haven’t seen that in another book other than my child A&P books! I find this such a useful resource and easy to follow and a thoroughly enjoyable book!’ Student, UCLan‘The contents page is divided into a simple contents and more detailed contents, which makes navigating the book easy and feel less overwhelming... and I especially like the ‘how to learn anatomy and physiology’ section. There are clear and simple illustrations throughout the book that don’t overwhelm the reader. Often diagrams can be used too often but I think the balance is just right in this book. I also found the blue boxes in the margins helpful, as they added information that was ‘good to know’. I absolutely love the supplementary chapters online. It saves the need to purchase several different books which can be confusing. This ties everything together nicely. The format of the online pages is also accessible, with plenty of white space and good use of diagrams. I feel like my 3rd year will be made a little simpler with access to these chapters. The online self-assessments are very useful too.’ Student, University of York‘I feel this is an essential book for anyone studying nursing or healthcare. I think it exceeds the more complicated textbooks as it is much easier to read but doesn’t compromise on content or information... in fact the content is above and beyond some of the other textbooks without all the jargon. The book covers everything for a A and P module on any nursing and healthcare course... I really like the extra content too especially the ‘Principles of drug actions’. The boxes are a stand-out feature and are really useful especially if you want additional information or to understand more about a subject. The information is relevant and up to date. [The self-assessment questions] are so useful as these are the format used in the A and P module exam and I like the additional methods of assessment too as always useful for a chance to consolidate learning and understanding. Really useful content and many other A and P books do not have this facility of assessing knowledge and understanding. This book will be one I read and read and read.’ Student, University of Huddersfield‘I think [the book] could be a useful resource for our OT students. It very much reflects the content of one of our modules and the layout and diagrams are helpful and clear.’ Senior Lecturer in OT, UCLan‘I can honestly say that this is a book that we have been waiting for a while. I love its relatedness and its relevance – the language used is easy to read and to understand; the use of diagrams and real-life photos aids understanding; the cross referencing between different systems demonstrates how the body works in a unified way; the case examples are contemporary and relevant to all fields of nursing; and the blend of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology result in a format that is very applied and supportive of the relevance of understanding A&P in nursing practice.’ Course Director for LD Nursing, UEA‘The book is a great introductory A&P text for all health disciplines at pre-reg level and the content is comprehensive, but not overwhelming. I would say that it is also a good revision textbook for post-reg and experienced clinicians in that it is a visually pleasing textbook, written in clear & simple terms. The authors have to be commended on their articulation of some complex systems.’ Senior Lecturer, School of Community Health and Midwifery, UCLan‘I really enjoy the presentation of the book and the online chapters are a great addition. The book really allows links for all fields of nursing practice to be made across the topic of biosciences for healthcare students. The pharmacology chapter in particular really supports all students and clinical backgrounds. It also is a very useful refresher for students going on to study a prescribing qualification. The illustrations are great, along side the boxes and taking it further notes. The self assessment questions are also very good for students to test themselves.’ Lecturer, Edinburgh Napier University‘I liked the illustrations, they were clear, colourful, and not too information-heavy, making each one easier to understand... The white background, simply text boxes, and colourful illustrations were aesthetically pleasing. The online assessments are REALLY helpful and I am also glad that these assessments are online as you can print them off or look at them separately to the book to really test your knowledge!’ Student, University of York‘The logical structure makes for ease of reading and enables the reader to get a good depth and understanding of the content... there is a good balance between authoritativeness and accessibility and this reinforces the principles and expectations demonstrated by my University provider too. One of the more ‘easy reading’ and less ‘full on’ academic texts surrounding A&P I have read. Some of the clearest diagrams I have witnessed in academic literature... extremely effective in supporting otherwise tricky to visualise concepts. I really enjoyed engaging with the additional resources online and felt that they enabled me to do just what it said on the tin so to speak and complete a self-assessment.’ Student, University of Brighton‘I believe this book is one of the best Anatomy and Physiology books I have read. Having been in the medical field for a number of years I have read a fair few and I would recommend this above some of the regular ones recommended. The combination of real medical images as well as illustrations is brilliant and puts everything into perspective. I am a very visual learner and this makes everything make sense. The illustrations are very clear and easy to examine. [The online self-assessment questions] are so useful. I like to test my knowledge and I think for some students this asserts their knowledge base and allows them to realise what they have managed to learn. I would thoroughly recommend this book to colleagues and fellow students. One of the most common errors in medical textbooks is that the authors assume a certain level of knowledge and if you do not meet that level the words just all merge and you don’t learn much other than confusing yourself more. This book, however, sets a level for all levels of learning and you take from it what you want. This book has become my new best friend in terms of anatomy and physiology textbooks.’ Student, University of East Anglia'I found the book excellent, clear and well laid out with enough information for student nurses without being overwhelming. I will be recommending it to students for next year.' Lecturer, Queen Margaret UniversityPerfect Addition to the Nursing Students Bookshelf ‘This is a really excellent book for any student healthcare professional, it has as much detail you would expect and more. It has additional interesting information in the margins as side notes which add more value. It allows expansion on current knowledge. It is easy to read, easy to navigate through and very accessible for all aspects of your degree or access course. One you'll definitely want to keep on your bookshelf as I feel it has endless longevity. When students ask what books they should get before they start their course, I'll be recommending this one.' Amazon reviewer Fantastic, condensed and Finely tuned for your needs ‘This book is exactly what the Nurse ordered! Clear , concise and condensed high yield information key to all your anatomy and physiology studies set out in a clear and simple manner. This is exactly what students need , especially when exams are around the corner and you need to pick out the core knowledge , this book does that all for you and expands on it with clear additional information boxes and links to pathophysiology at the end of each chapter to make the knowledge slots into place.' Amazon reviewer An essential! ‘I'm a second year (adult) student nurse and I've found this book so useful for my studies! Compared to other anatomy and physiology textbooks especially, this book is so easy to read in that it explains processes in a way that make sense and makes the content less 'dry' and easier to understand. The detailed colourful diagrams also really help to make the information sink in. Overall, this book definitely makes the sometimes difficult subject of anatomy and physiology a lot easier to read about and understand whilst still containing all the information you need to know!' Amazon reviewer As a 3rd year student nurse, this was fab! ‘What a fab book! As a third year student nurse and having an intense science module to study for - I utilised this book, and truly relied on it to help me understand the basics of A&P in order to apply my specific module content in practice. Love the keys & the hints! Also love how easy it is to read! I sometimes get put off if content is too complex - this however, was written in a way that was super easy to pick up!' Amazon reviewer Great new book on the market ‘This is a great new book aimed at nursing and healthcare students. I particularly like the way the book begins with histology. I also like that the book has a brief contents page then a detailed contents page. Some textbooks can be uninteresting and unappealing, however, I feel this book has a good balance. Something else I liked is the content depth of this book. Some books can be too sparse or too in-depth but this is definitely spot on.' Amazon reviewer A great resource for Anatomy and physiology modules ‘I am a student MH nurse and I gave this book 5 stars because it is an excellent A and P book for not only Nursing students but it would be good for people who study subjects such as holistic therapy or yoga teaching etc . The quality is excellent and there are great diagrams too. I liked the quick fact check boxes too.' Amazon reviewer Perfect for all fields and years! ‘WOW. This book, as a final year child nursing student really helped me. As a student nurse ambassador for my university also, many potential students ask if A&P is hard to get your head around and honestly, I wish I had this book from year 1. It’s amazing and I’d honestly recommend this to any future or current nursing student!' Amazon reviewer Fabulous textbook ‘This book is fabulous. I’m a second year student nurse and have worked in healthcare for nearly ten years and this is by far the best anatomy and physiology textbook I’ve come across to date. It allows the reader to read the bare minimum or expand their knowledge base by reading the side notes!! Well laid out and well worded.' Amazon reviewer A must-buy for all nursing and healthcare students ‘This is a modern textbook that introduces topics in a way that is easy to digest. Not only does it provide information that will help with your first A&P exam, but it also brings in the practical element of nursing and healthcare too. I especially love the supplementary chapters available online, which cover an array of topics saving the need to purchase several different books. As a student mental health nurse, I welcome the information around common mental health problems. I think this is an important step towards reducing the widening disparity between mental and physical health.'
