Book SynopsisHuh is the Egyptian god of endlessness, creativity, fertility and regeneration. He is the deity Mary Myatt and John Tomsett have adopted as their god of the curriculum. Their Huh series of books focuses on how practitioners design the curriculum for the young people in their schools. The Huh project is founded on conversations with colleagues doing great work across the education sector. In SEND Huh, Mary Myatt and John Tomsett discuss curriculum provision for pupils with additional needs with some of the leading experts in the field.Mary and John interviewed pupils, parents, teachers, headteachers, CEOs, educational consultants and lecturers. They then edited the transcriptions of those interviews to provide an ambitious, thoughtful, nuanced and challenging vision of what the best possible provision looks like for children with additional learning needs. The challenging conversations that comprise SEND Huh paint an inspiring picture that is hugTrade ReviewI simply adore this book. It rams home that being inclusive is not an excuse for low expectations. Instead of being an afterthought when it comes to curriculum, children with additional needs become drivers for what a well-rounded curriculum is for all young people. Curriculum decisions are about building and accelerating learning, and the years of the deficit model of SEND should be put to bed by one reading of this latest book in Myatt and Tomsett's powerful Huh series. * Vic Goddard, co-principal, Passmores Academy and CEO of Passmores Cooperative Learning Community *SEND Huh weaves together a sophisticated and thoughtful narrative of lived experiences from a wide range of contributors from every corner of the sector. It's not often that a non-fiction book has such a profound effect on me. I found myself thinking about it days after, contemplating the nuance, mulling over the complexity, grappling with the challenges and acknowledging the rallying cry to ensure our pupils with additional needs receive an ambitious education that enables them to thrive. * Kathryn Morgan, senior capacity improvement advisor, TSHC *There is something very special in education, and that is the care and clarity with which the contributors in SEND Huh speak about the young people in their communities, and the work they and their colleagues do to smash blunt blanket presumptions, remove obstacles and champion all children. The knowledge and wisdom of the contributors encourages us all to recognise that there is so much to learn about provision, practice, curriculum and attitudes towards supporting children with additional needs. We will all teach children who will need something additional or different; knowing what or how can often be a challenge. This book meets colleagues where they are in their journey of understanding the what and the how, and encourages us to look with fresh eyes at the research, the reality and the joyful rewards of teaching and learning from children with additional needs. * Emma Turner, deputy director of education, BDMAT *

Workman Publishing Let's Eat Italy!: Everything You Want to Know

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis"A fantastic read for foodies and a luscious culinary reference."-Booklist From the same team that created Let's Eat France! comes this celebration of Italian food in the form of an oversized, obsessively complete, visual feast of a book. With a mix of gastronomy, food science, history, cultural references, legend, lore, charts, graphs, photos, and illustrations, every one of the 400 pages in Let's Eat Italy! is an alluring and amusing journey into Italian food.Readers will find recipes for classic Italian dishes spanning all regions, like pappa al pomodoro, Bolognese, risi e bisi, risotto, focaccia, frittata, and so much more-all accompanied by photos and delightfully entertaining information on the origins and modern uses of the foods. There's an ode to the panettone, the traditional Christmas sweet delight. A dedication to the magic of basil, Italy's "royal" herb. A love story between pasta and potatoes that examines the many dishes that marry these two starches in delicious harmony. And, of course, pasta information aplenty; it's featured in guides like that on the ultimate noodle, spaghetti, which includes all the different forms, the top spaghetti artisans in Italy, and the semolina flour mills and farmers. True Italians speak espresso, so readers will delight in the poster-like graphic that depicts 27 different types of espresso drinks. Tips for the kitchen include cooking beans in a chianti bottle-a trick Tuscan nonnas have been using for ages in the dish known as fagioli al fiasco. Learn how contemporary food trends (like the oh-so-hip orange wine, which Italians have been drinking for nearly 8,000 years) trace their roots to Italy. But the influence of Italian food doesn't stop at the table-an entire spread looks at the Italian Mafia's favourite dishes as seen in Hollywood, through the lenses of Scorsese, Leone, and Coppola. Let's Eat Italy! is a splendid exploration of this beloved cuisine, from pizza to gelato, Milan to Sicily, and from the many kitchens of Italy to your own.Trade Review“Gaudry takes armchair travelers and gastronomes on a tour of one of the world’s best-loved cuisines in Let’s Eat Italy! Along with well-curated recipes, this gorgeous coffee table book features stunning infographics, maps and tributes to all things Italian—from pasta to gelati to wine.”—Atlanta Journal-Constitution “A design treasure: comprehensive and visually diverse, yet beautifully unified and appealing. The oversized trim and variety of visual content—food photographs, archival photographs, maps, fine art, spot illustrations, portraits, charts, to name just a few—are staggering, but never feel overwhelming. . . . Let’s Eat Italy! succeeds in feeling as exciting, rich, and complex as Italian cuisine itself.”—Stained Pages News “This gastronomic homage to Italy starts at a simmer with a smart user’s guide and then bubbles with recipes, profiles, and ingredient spotlights. Recipes for amatriciana, carbonara, baba, and lesser-known specialties are researched and authoritative. Profiles feature cultural traditions and achievements, including Carlo Petrini and the birth of the slow food movement. These pages explore intriguing backstories of prized ingredients like basil, ‘the royal herb’; olive oil; and famous regional cheeses. There is information on proper techniques for selecting, making, and eating Italian foods including how-to’s for choosing a fig or a chocolate spread, making risotto, and eating spaghetti. A buffet of photographs, artful graphics, maps, and sidebars make for informative and inspiring browsing. Let’s Eat Italy! is a fantastic read for foodies and a luscious culinary reference. ‘Why did Cucina Italiana conquer the world?’ If pasta, pizza, and Parmesan haven’t already answered that question, this culinary compendium certainly does.” —Booklist

Book Synopsis'Agile, wryly funny and wise' Robert Macfarlane A search for nearby nature and wildness After years of expeditions all over the world, adventurer Alastair Humphreys spends a year exploring the detailed local map around his home. Can this unassuming landscape, marked by the glow of city lights and the hum of busy roads, hold any surprises for the world traveller or satisfy his wanderlust? Could a single map provide a lifetime of exploration? Discovering more about the natural world than in all his years in remote environments, he learns the value of truly getting to know his neighbourhood. An ode to slowing down, Local is a celebration of curiosity and time spent outdoors, as well as a rallying cry to protect the wild places on our doorstep.Trade Review"Agile, wryly funny and wise." - Robert Macfarlane 'Alastair Humphreys is the consummate roamer: big of heart, curious of mind, light of step' - Amy-Jane Beer, winner of the 2023 Wainwright Prize 'A paean to the benefits of determined noticing. What really shines through its pages is Humphreys' omnivorous curiosity' Financial Times 'Thanks to some genuinely thoughtful writing about planet, place and political purpose, Humphreys finds beauty in the scruffy margins and makes readers look anew at what might easily be familiar or forgotten' The Observer 'A vivid, wry, angry, passionate read from Mr Adventure' Saga Magazine 'I wholeheartedly recommend the book. Anything that establishes the view that exploration is an attitude, not an activity, has to be a good thing. The physical bounds of our children will be smaller than ours. It is up to us to show that by rewilding the mind and finding adventure in the commonplace, a life constrained by necessity is still a life worth living' Chris Gibson Wildlife 'Witty and gritty, affectionate and mildly censorious, eager and sometimes weary. This is still a book of a traveller and adventurer - it's just he can cycle home quite quickly each day. Readable, well-written, stimulating' Mark Avery

  • The Nation of Plants: The International

Profile Books Ltd The Nation of Plants: The International

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAs plants see it, humans are not the masters of the Earth but only one of its most unpleasant and irksome residents. They have been on the planet for only about 300,000 years ago (nothing compared to the three billon years of plant evolution), yet have changed the conditions of the planet so drastically as to make it a dangerous place for their own survival. It's time for the plants to offer advice. In this playful, philosophical manifesto, Stefano Mancuso, expert on plant intelligence, presents a new constitution on which to build our future as beings respectful of the Earth and its inhabitants. These eight articles - the fundamental pillars on which plant life is based - must henceforth regulate all living beings.Trade ReviewPraise for The Nation of Plants: This artfully crafted exposition delightfully delves into the lives of plants by presenting the eight pillars on which those lives are built. * Newsweek *Mancuso writes playfully; as manifestos go, he knows, his is deeply weird...But this is peculiarity with a purpose. The conceit, an impassioned argument from collectivized flora that cites both atmospheric emissions and anthropocenic despair, forces readers to ask elemental questions. Who-and what-deserves moral consideration when the fate of one species is so often the fate of another? Mancuso's plants, in the end, make some very good points -- Megan Garber * The Atlantic *A renowned scientist delivers a simple yet urgent call to action on behalf of Earth's multitude of plants...[a] powerful book...Mancuso concludes his elegant and cogent argument with straightforward advice accessible to anyone...Insightful and arresting, this book offers an achievable road map to a more radiant future * Kirkus Reviews *A marvellously inventive spur to imagination. Plants have many lessons to offer us about thriving and resilience, and these are wonderfully elucidated in this deep green journey -- David George Haskell, author of the Pulitzer Prize finalist The Forest Unseen and John Burroughs Medal recipient for The Songs of TreesStefano Mancuso's The Nation of Plants is brilliant and delightful. A perfect little gem of a book -- Sonia Shah, author of The Next Great Migration: The Beauty and Terror of Life on the MoveA fantastic and necessary read for any plant enthusiast or environmental activist, The Nation of Plants is not merely a missive on the perils of climate change. Rather, the book begins from the whimsical perspective of plants, then weaves scientific fact with historical examples in a moving and inspiring call to action. Apart from the initial address, Mancuso's concrete approach is far from fantastical. The Nation of Plants is moving and informative, balancing a love for all things botanical with a passion for listening to and considering the needs of our plant brethren. -- Jessica Roux, author of Floriography: An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of FlowersIn his new book, The Nation of Plants, Stefano Mancuso expresses his awe for plants by asking a unique question: What if our Constitution were rewritten by plants? What would be the fundamental laws if the Earth were governed by plants rather than people? Mancuso answers this question by masterfully and thoughtfully linking the stories of people, plants, and plant science. A must-read for anyone who is interested in the historical interactions between people and plants -- Valerie Trouet, author of Tree Story: The History of the World Written in RingsIn this insightful and pithy tract, Stefano Mancuso convincingly argues that the route to fighting climate change and mass extinction, and to living sustainably on this Earth, begins with a floral point of view. This is the constitution we need -- Zach St. George, author of The Journeys of Trees: A Story about Forests, People, and the FutureThe Nation of Plants unveils the long-term relationship between plants and people and explores the rights of all living things. It is a call for cooperation in a world facing persistent environmental degradation. It is a call for our mutual survival -- Lauren E. Oakes, author of In Search of the Canary TreeIn this brief book, Stefano Mancuso offers what may be the most original solution to the troubling age of humans. What if it were plants, rather than humans, who wrote a constitution for Earthly survival? Mancuso's innovative manifesto is a set of principles for living according to the botanical world. He imagines a new political order based not on the survival of the fittest, but rather on life in community, mutual aid, freedom from borders, and sovereignty for all living beings. In this engaging read, the plant philosopher pushes readers to see how much our survival depends on the well-being of the Nation of Plants-and gives us a radical guide to living according to the rules of life's unsung heroes -- Elizabeth Hennessy, author of On the Backs of Tortoises: Darwin, the Galapagos, and the Fate of an Evolutionary EdenMancuso [is] a gifted writer, with an engaging story-telling approach ... Book SynopsisElyn Saks is Professor of Law and Psychiatry at University of Southern California Law School. She''s the author of several books. Happily married. And - a schizophrenic. Saks lifts the veil on schizophrenia with her startling and honest account of how she learned to live with this debilitating disease. With a coolly clear, measured tone she talks about her condition, the stigma attached and the deadening effects of medication. Her controlled narrative is disrupted by interjections from the part of her mind she has learned to suppress. Delusions, hallucinations and threatening voices cut into her reality and Saks, in a remarkably vivid way, enables us to hear and see them too. This is a powerful book that is as informative as it is moving. There are parallels with Jane Lapotaire''s Time Out of Mind and with Girl, Interrupted.

Book SynopsisJust My Type is not just a font book, but a book of stories. About how Helvetica and Comic Sans took over the world. About why Barack Obama opted for Gotham, while Amy Winehouse found her soul in 30s Art Deco. About the great originators of type, from Baskerville to Zapf, or people like Neville Brody who threw out the rulebook, or Margaret Calvert, who invented the motorway signs that are used from Watford Gap to Abu Dhabi. About the pivotal moment when fonts left the world of Letraset and were loaded onto computers ... and typefaces became something we realised we all have an opinion about. As the Sunday Times review put it, the book is 'a kind of Eats, Shoots and Leaves for letters, revealing the extent to which fonts are not only shaped by but also define the world in which we live.' This edition is available with both black and silver covers.Trade ReviewBrilliant ... whether you're a graphics geek or have never given a second thought to what you're reading, don't miss this quirky, fact-filled font fest. -- Lauren Laverne * Grazia *Reading this book may just change your life; it'll certainly make you smile. If nothing else, it'll make you appreciate the beauty - and sometimes the horror - that is all around you. * Time Out *A celebration of our way with words * Observer *Light-hearted but comprehensive, from rather odious typefaces, such as the hairy Grassy, to the ubiquitous Helvetica, each font is given a rundown. Garfield says he's unable to walk past a sign until he has identified the typeface. Now, neither can we. * Monocle *Garfield convinces us it's okay to actually like typography. What shines about this book is its accessibility; you don't have to be a typeface historian or a designer to find it enthralling ... It's fascinating to read about the history, origins and revolutions of typefaces, and this book strikes a great balance between fact and humour. Garfield's book isn't snobbish or elitist, and this is its most refreshing quality - it's for everyone to enjoy and share ... reading this book may just change your life; it'll certainly make you smile. If nothing else, it'll make you appreciate the beauty - and sometimes the horror - that is all around you. -- Nick Booth * Time Out *Hugely entertaining ... a lively history ... my considerable enjoyment of this book may have been enhanced by the fact that I've always been very interested in print design. But even those who have never considered the beauty of the Baskerville Q ... should find themselves being drawn in by Garfield's enthusiasm and wit -- Anna Carey * Sunday Business Post *A quirky introduction to fonts ... Simon Garfield is careful to tickle as much as he teaches ... Just My Type is fun. If you have ever looked at the drop-down menu in Word and wondered what a Garamond is, or what's meant to be new about Times New Roman, Garfield will be just your type. -- Peter Robins * Daily Telegraph *Dozens of compelling anecdotes are clearly told by Simon Garfield in this eye-opening book, which is utterly convincing in its central idea - that we are surrounded by fonts and influenced by their subtle message ... a delightful, brain-expanding book. -- Harry Mount * Mail on Sunday *Garfield's great strength is his storytelling. His book comprises dozens of lovely vignettes, anecdotes that make a potentially dusty subject utterly compelling ... he shows as judicious a sense of imagery as he has of more technical description ... a fine primer -- Archie Bland * Independent on Sunday *A lively history of fonts, from the first moveable letters used by Johannes Gutenberg in the 1440s to the latest cutting edge typefaces ... lavishly and imaginatively illustrated ... a joy to look at as well as to read ... encapsulates the romance and magical possibilities of type. -- Anna Carey * Sunday Business Post *Chatty, anecdotal ... illuminates even a walk to the shops * Sunday Times *Superb ... it is a fascinating and funny book that delves into the history and oddities of typefaces throughout the ages ... it's full of weird and wonderful stories. -- Doug Johnstone * Big Issue *A gift for aesthetes and arty types ... funny and fascinating -- Bea Hodgkin * Easy Living *Just My Type is a font fanatic's dream -- Alison Flood * Wired Magazine *Garfield is extremely knowledgeable about type history while ignoring the politics and egos ... the tone is often funny and always entertaining ... thoroughly enjoyable. -- Steven Heller * Financial Times *A delight from start to end * The Age, Australia *A whistle-stop tour of fonts ... Just My Type is an immensely refreshing offering from an author who is fascinated by his subject. Conveying the richness and the personality of typefaces with love and passion, this is an accessible and entertaining introduction to the world of lettering. -- Patrick Myles * Blueprint *Delightful ... Just My Type is the kind of book that makes you look at the world differently, indeed, it can induce a mild obsessive compulsive disorder ... like a master sommelier, Garfield has a wonderful capacity to convery the little hints and barely registered associations which different fonts impart ... an ingenious book. -- Stuart Kelly * Scotsman *Accessible, informative and often amusing... Copiously illustrated, it's a painless way to develop an appreciation for the subject. -- Alastair Mabbott * Herald *This is a smart, funny, accessible book that does for typography what Lynne Truss's best-selling Eats, Shoots & Leaves did for punctuation: made it noticeable for people who had no idea they were interested in such things. * New York Times *[A] lively romp through the history of fonts. Garfield's evocative prose entices us to see letters instead of just reading them * Publishers Weekly *Highly recommended to all, whether or not you feel predisposed to like this kind of thing! Eye-opening and mind-expanding! * Library Journal *Deliriously clever and entertaining. * Boston Globe *A witty and illuminating history of typography... As a writer who succeeds in re-interpreting arcane design-speak for a wider audience, Garfield is at his best when investigating the personal histories of designers... It is a book that opens our eyes afresh to the jostling array of "armour-plated" "balletic" "nuzzling" typefaces that demand our attention and appreciation... An unexpectedly engrossing read, this is a book that threatens to make font wonks of all of us. -- Emma Hagestadt * Independent *Entertaining feast of fonts for graphic geeks and a humorous insight into the fonts dominating print today. * Times *Every so often someone writes a book about an obscure subject and uses it to illuminate the rest of the world... this is one of the best. -- William Leith * Evening Standard *After being walked through these stories, it's difficult to even look at a cereal packet in the same way again... This book won't just turn readers into avid font-spotters; it will also nudge them towards admiring the beauty of a single letter or a well-drawn ampersand. • Animal Joy: A Book of Laughter and Resuscitation

Fitzcarraldo Editions Animal Joy: A Book of Laughter and Resuscitation

Book SynopsisLaughter shakes us out of our deadness. An outburst of spontaneous laughter is an eruption from the unconscious that, like political resistance, poetry, or self-revelation, expresses a provocative, impish drive to burst free from external constraints. Taking laughter’s revelatory capacity as a starting point, and rooted in Nuar Alsadir’s experience as a poet and psychoanalyst, Animal Joy seeks to recover the sensation of feeling alive and embodied. Writing in a poetic, associative style, blending the personal with the theoretical, Alsadir ranges from her experience in clown school, Anna Karenina’s morphine addiction, Freud’s unfreudian behaviors, marriage brokers and war brokers to ‘Not Jokes’, Abu Ghraib, Fanon’s negrophobia, smut, the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, laugh tracks, the problem with adjectives, to how poetry can wake us up. At the centre of the book, though, is the author’s relationship with her daughters, who erupt into the text like sudden, unexpected laughter. These interventions – frank, tender, and always a challenge to the writer and her thinking – are like tiny revolutions, pointedly showing the dangers of being severed from our True Self and hinting at ways we might be called back to it. A bold and insatiably curious prose debut, Animal Joy is an ode to spontaneity and feeling alive.Trade Review‘To read Animal Joy is to become alive to the condition of wakefulness in the world. This spectacular achievement by the psychoanalyst and writer Nuar Alsadir provokes and destabilizes our understanding of a life’s competing narratives. I can think of no other contemporary work of nonfiction that brings together autobiography, a learned history of psychoanalysis, lyrical poetics, ontological investigations of our attempt to manage our own feelings, with such astute engagement. This is a work that will change conversations about who we are, what we think motivates us, what makes us us. The meeting place of the intentional and the unintentional erupts in Animal Joy in order that we might reinvestigate our incoming thoughts and feelings with a sense of vigor and curiosity. If you are open to introducing “tiny revolutions” of thought into your life by resisting received and uninterrogated scripts, read this book.’ — Claudia Rankine, author of Citizen‘Reading this book you are on a joy ride with the mind of a free thinker who will surprise you, make you laugh uncontrollably, and trouble you until you come out changed.’ — Orna Guralnik, Psychologist, Psychoanalyst, Couples Therapy (BBC)‘Few things feel as important right now as what Nuar Alsadir is thinking about in her brilliant new book. She considers the ways in which, despite our most determined curation of our public-faces, and despite our approval-seeking and plain old quotidian bullshittery, laughter reveals to us (and sometimes others) what we might really feel.’ — Ross Gay, author of The Book of Delights‘Nuar Alsadir has wandered fearlessly through the wordless regions of everyday life and returned intact, bearing this exhilaratingly personal and artful weave of stories and meditations. As precise as it is lyrical, Animal Joy invites us to attend anew to human feelings, those elusive, barely noticed entities transmitting everywhere, all the time, “with a frequency outside of measurement.”’ — Josh Cohen, author of Not Working‘Nuar Alsadir’s lyrical, hilarious and beautifully undefended meditation has the capacity to widen our consciousness to allow notice of what occurs in the interstices of attention and mortification. In that way, Animal Joy is a book that seems compassionately able to read us as we turn its pages.’ — Jonathan Lethem‘A genuine masterpiece. Nuar Alsadir’s Animal Joy might be the best thing I’ve ever read on psychoanalysis and its deep connection to living a full, real, embodied life. Utterly compelling, radical, dizzyingly original, and beautiful, this is the work of a writer at the height of their powers.’ — Rebecca Tamás, author of Strangers‘Gorgeously written and by turns hilarious and crushing, Alsadir’s examination of humanity’s “savage complexity” is not to be missed.’ — Publishers Weekly ‘It will leave you feeling enlightened and emboldened, and will even make you laugh.’ — Observer‘Nuar Alsadir’s Animal Joy is extravagant with revelations. Alsadir reads the human psyche with brilliant rigor and generosity, patiently prodding underneath the surface of human behavior, language, politics and race to get at the root of the real. After I finished Animal Joy, I came away feeling more awake, more present, and more connected to myself and the world.’ — Cathy Park Hong, author of Minor Feelings‘Through the awesome and heterogeneous study of this book, laughter at first feels like the most enigmatic act, a convulsing creature in the psyche, in the home, in awkward publics, but then it is returned to us as the most true form of comprehension; an animal attitude to reality, a culturing note of corpsing, creasing and cracking up, that snags on the meaning of everything.’ — Holly Pester, author of Comic Timing‘Where do laughter, psychoanalysis, poetry, motherhood, creativity, thought, language, and so much more intersect? In Animal Joy Nuar Alsadir shows us in dazzling fashion, demonstrating what only the essay form, in the hands of a true artist, critic, and thinker, can achieve.’ — John Keene, author of Counternarratives‘Alsadir’s Granta essay on the emotional flagellation of clowning is one of the best pieces of writing I have ever read, and her longer interrogation into the act—and release—of laughing is equally powerful and moving.’ — Courtney Maum, Literary Hub ‘Expansive and erudite. . . . Watching the motion of [Alsadir’s] mind across her capacious subject matter is captivating.’ — Kathleen Rooney, Liber

Book SynopsisWe live in a golden age of fictional television, while our politics has never been so controversial. This book explores that relationship, asking what it is that some of America’s most popular TV shows have to say about its politics. Perhaps, like the author, you have gasped at Game of Thrones and balked at Breaking Bad. This book illustrates how, far from being outside of politics, shows such as these are deeply political, helping to fill our world with meaning. To this end, the book analyses Game of Thrones, House of Cards, The West Wing, Homeland, 24, Veep, The Wire, The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad. These are all politically consequential shows that shape how we feel and think about world politics.Table of ContentsAcknowledgementsList of abbreviationsIntroductionPart I: Watching television1 America and the screen2 Screening America under Bush, Obama, and Trump3 Drawing lines: world politics and popular culture4 Analysing fictional television Part II: Politics and television5 World politics as realpolitik (in House of Cards and Game of Thrones)6 Constructing counter-terrorism (in Homeland, 24, and The West Wing)7 Imagining the president (in The West Wing, 24, and Veep)Part III: Television and our political world8 Ethics and inequality (in The Wire)9 Being human in a world of zombies (in The Walking Dead)10 The personal is political (in Breaking Bad)ConclusionBibliographyIndex

  • How Media and Conflicts Make Migrants

Manchester University Press How Media and Conflicts Make Migrants

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book explores how we understand global conflicts as they relate to the “European refugee crisis”, and draws on a range of empirical fieldwork carried out in the UK and Italy. It examines how global conflict has been constructed in both countries through media representations – in a climate of changing media habits, widespread mistrust, and fake news. In so doing, it examines the role played by historical amnesia about legacies of imperialism – and how this leads to a disavowal of responsibility for the causes why people flee their countries. The book explores how this understanding in turn shapes institutional and popular responses in receiving countries, ranging from hostility—such as the framing of refugees by politicians, as 'economic migrants' who are abusing the asylum system; to solidarity initiatives. Based on interviews and workshops with refugees in both countries, the book develops the concept of “migrantification” – in which people are made into migrants by the state, the media and members of society. In challenging the conventional expectation for immigrants to tell stories about their migration journey, the book explores experiences of discrimination as well as acts of resistance. It argues that listening to those on the sharpest end of the immigration system can provide much-needed perspective on global conflicts and inequalities which challenges common Eurocentric misconceptions. Interludes, interspersed between chapters, explore these issues in another way through songs, jokes and images.Trade Review'This volume explores connections between media representations, global migrants, and perceptions upheld and challenged by viewers in the UK and Italy during the 2010s. The text oscillates between chapters that unpack issues like "white amnesia" and "postcolonial innocence" among white, Western viewers, and brief "interlude" chapters that convey migrants’ insights into navigating different media perspectives and experiences within their new settings. For instance, the authors note a shift from print to new media consumption that necessitates steady access to the internet and mobile technology, which flies in the face of stagnant images of migrants as "not entitled" to such technology, further limiting their access to and sharing of information. Ultimately, the authors call for building international systems to disrupt the willful "forgetting" of interconnected global histories fueling migrants’ voyages, and to help them thrive in their new countries. This book could be useful for courses in political science, media studies, communications, and ethnic studies. Visual pairings might include pertinent excerpts from British and Italian newscasts from the period, along with relevant news articles and online posts, with the potential to integrate these media into a reflective "migrantification" assignment.'CHOICE -- .Table of ContentsList of figuresIntroduction: Conflict, media and displacement in the Twenty-First Century1 How postcolonial innocence and white amnesia shape our understanding of the “refugee crisis”Interlude: Global war and media absences2 War Narratives: Making sense of conflictInterlude: Songs, jokes, movies and other diversions3 Social media, mutual aid and solidarity movements as a response to institutional breakdownInterlude: How it feels to be made a migrant: restrictions, frustration and longing4 The processes of migrantification: how displaced people are made into migrantsInterlude: Telling stories about war differently5 Refusing the demand for sad storiesConclusion: Unsettling dominant narratives about migration in a time of fluxBibliography
