Book SynopsisHolistic consciousness is an all-inclusive awareness of the currently situated body-mind-being of an individual person or a living organism. Holism, a theory that the universe and especially living nature is correctly seen in terms of interactive wholes, as all living organisms, that are more than the mere sum of their parts. It is related to and concerned with wholes or with complete systems, rather than with the analysis and treatment of the parts. It holds, that a system or an organism, is a coherent unified whole, that cannot be fully explained in terms of individual parts or characteristics. The system or an organism may have properties, in addition to those of its parts, as a completely new entity or phenomenon. This book provides an understanding of holistic consciousness with a focus on neuroscience and Vedanta perspectives.

  • Symbiotic Biofilms & Brain Neurochemistry

Nova Science Publishers Inc Symbiotic Biofilms & Brain Neurochemistry

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn overwhelming majority of known species of microorganisms form biofilms (ie: spatially and metabolically structured communities embedded in the extracellular biopolymer matrix). Biofilm development is a complex multi-stage process involving reversible and, at a later stage, irreversible attachment of microbial cells to the substrate surface. Development also involves matrix formation, three-dimensional structuring of the whole community including the formation of mushroom- or pillar-shaped structures and, finally, the degradation of the biofilm and the dispersion of the cells involved. This book examines these processes in the example of microorganisms that interact with the animal or human organisms, playing the roles of symbionts or pathogens.

Book SynopsisThe human brain and its behaviour present one of the most challenging, but at the same time, one of the most fascinating endeavours among the scientific and philosophical inquiries. Therefore, from a comprehensive perspective, every heuristic approach (epistemological, philosophical and scientific) to the study of the human brain and mind should be understood not as an exclusive paradigm, but rather as a perspective from which these complex and amazing phenomenon are investigated. This book provides essays written by world-wide renowned academics with expertise in their respective fields of knowledge. They are intended both to stimulate the reader''s curiosity and also to provide him a broad sense of the several possible philosophical and scientific approaches to the study of brain, mind and behaviour.

  • Frontal Lobe: Anatomy, Functions & Injuries

Nova Science Publishers Inc Frontal Lobe: Anatomy, Functions & Injuries

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe frontal lobes, which constitute about one-third of the entire cerebral cortex, have long fascinated scientific explorers of human behaviour. There are multiple reasons for this: the frontal lobes are the most recently evolved parts of the brain of Homo sapiens and can be viewed as the executive centre of the entire nervous system, subserving the key function of goal-oriented behaviour and reconciling internal emotional states with the demands of the external environment. This book presents some of the latest research on the structure and functional role of the frontal lobes, as revealed by both physiological and pathological studies. This timely and comprehensive volume exemplifies that only a truly multidisciplinary and collaborative effort from the allied disciplines of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropathology, neuroimaging, neuropsychology and neuropsychiatry will result in a better understanding of the wide-reaching implications of frontal lobe dysfunction.

  • Serotonin: Biosynthesis, Regulation & Health

Nova Science Publishers Inc Serotonin: Biosynthesis, Regulation & Health

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSerotonin has long been known to have important roles in many systems of the body that have important roles in health and disease. As represented by several of the chapters by a number of leading researchers in the serotonin field, these roles implicate a deep evolutionary history for serotonin, which is demonstrated by studies in a range of vertebrate and non-vertebrate model systems. In many areas of medicine, even those in which serotonin has long been known to play a role, the importance of serotonin is still emerging. This volume considers many of these areas, including such well-established areas as the study of anxiety, depression and alcoholism, in which new information is emerging. This book examines a wide range of systems and conditions in which serotonin is fundamentally important and which provide novel avenues of exploration for the development of therapeutic approaches to treat these conditions.

  • Dyslexia: A Visual Approach

Nova Science Publishers Inc Dyslexia: A Visual Approach

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisEven if the ophthalmological aspects of developmental dyslexia are generally considered negligible in comparison to the cognitive and phonological ones, a growing body of evidence suggests in many patients the presence of deficiencies related to a neuronal sub-population along the visual pathway. Still, even in the limited area of neuro-ophtalmological research, there is no general agreement on the mechanisms underlying reading impairment and on how the aetiological element determines the phenotype, that is to say the typical symptomatology. Nevertheless, the spatial and temporal vision in dyslexics seem to be defective. The purpose of this work is to report in a critical way the state of the art visual research in developmental dyslexia, without considering the aspects that go beyond our competence. In the second part of the treatise, the personal approach to the visuoperceptive impairment in this clinical condition is phenomenological rather than aetiological: it investigates the problem from the perceptive symptoms and signs rather than from the causal hypothesis and from the anatomofunctional demonstration. Without claiming to exhaust the subject, we have pursued a triple aim: trying to shed light on one of the most debated and controversial questions, providing a rigorous and comprehensive overview on the current acquisitions, and, why not, offering some cues to those who intend to contribute to solve this problem.

  • Chronic Disorders of Consciousness: From Research

Nova Science Publishers Inc Chronic Disorders of Consciousness: From Research

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisChronic disorders of consciousness comprise a tragic group of conditions for which determining prognosis is a prerequisite for clinical decision-making. The Vegetative State (VS) and the Minimally Conscious State (MCS) are syndromes, encompassing a spectrum of severity with various etiologies, most commonly traumatic brain injury or hypoxic-ischemic or hemorrhagic neuronal injury. They can be a transient stage during recovery from an acute brain insult or can be chronic and stable, usually after a variable period of coma. Recent advances in neuroimaging are providing new insights into cerebral activity in patients with severe brain damage. The mapping of cognitive processes (mostly by measuring regional changes in blood flow, initially by PET and currently by fMRI, and by measuring regional metabolic changes by MRSI) is providing insight into the functional neuroanatomy and metabolic assessment of consciousness. However, differential diagnosis of SV and MCS is still difficult and their complex management involves many different and skilled healthcare professionals. This book is aimed at examining the pathophysiology of consciousness disorders with their multifaceted assessment and treatment, including new diagnostic tools and novel prognostic markers, and the important bioethical issues concerning "the end of life" and the "dignity of the person".

  • Repair of the Human Brain & Spinal Cord

Nova Science Publishers Inc Repair of the Human Brain & Spinal Cord

Book SynopsisWith the single-nerve fiber action potential recording method and the single-motor unit electromyography, the functioning of the human central nervous system (CNS) is analysed at the single-neuron level under physiologic conditions following injury, malformation and degeneration. It is shown that the self-organisation of the neuronal networks of the human CNS by phase and frequency coordination becomes impaired following all nervous system diseases. Out of the differences between the functioning of the healthy and pathologically functioning CNS, a repair treatment is developed called Co-ordination Dynamics Therapy (CDT). This movement-based learning therapy is able to improve almost every nervous system in its functioning by functional and structural repair for all ages including premature born babies and in aging. The therapy progress with CDT can be quantified by using the System Theory of Pattern Formation. By pattern change, given by a special CDT device, a single value is obtained for the quality of CNS functioning. Especially the tremor in Parkinson''s disease and the urinary bladder repair in spinal cord injury are analysed in detail by the human neurophysiologic recording methods and clinical assessments. The repair of the human nervous system is shown in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies in mild and severe traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. By applying CDT, CNS functioning can also be improved in Parkinson''s disease and in aging. The rate of improvement/repair by learning is measured in the healthy and the diseased nervous systems. It is emphasised that the efficacy of movement-based learning therapies may differ by a factor of 100. A powerful tool in learning is the learning transfer. By training integrative movements, including automatisms, not only the trained movements can be improved, but also the vegetative and higher mental functions can be repaired as, for example, continence, speech and cardiovascular performance.

Book SynopsisThis is a book that addresses the history and science of dreams. The author uses his own dreams as examples, some of which are unique due to Elder''s personal and medical history. The dreams include typical experiences, such as flying, but also extend to intriguing astral events, prophecies, and messages on the nature of existence. The author employs the first-person present tense perspective when describing his dreams, which makes them exciting and fast-paced. The narrative sections follow the typical academic style, although Elder has endeavoured to make the material accessible to the widest possible audience. Unlike many mass-market books on this subject, it also examines dream science and history in considerable depth, providing readers with a wealth of unique insights into what dreams are and why we have them. For example, Elder relates some forms of dream prophecy to the workings of our episodic memory system, finding a persuasive basis of support in modern schema theory and neuropsychological research. Other dreams, such as those concerning God, humanity''s future, and astral adventures occasionally defy the author''s tendency to find rationalistic explanations, a fact that he both dislikes and admits. The historical review stretches back to Gilgamesh, and runs up to modern findings in the neurosciences. Of course, the ideas of Freud, Jung, and others are discussed along the way, with the reader getting a great deal of information on what dreams were thought to mean over the ages. Indeed, there are over 380 sources scattered throughout the text, and a quick review of the bibliography will reveal that this is a manuscript of considerable research and substance. Readers from high school to post-graduate levels will find items of interest in this fast-moving text, which leaves a message that is as much spiritual and moral as it is scientific.

  • Contemporary Issues in Peripheral Neuropathy

Nova Science Publishers Inc Contemporary Issues in Peripheral Neuropathy

Book SynopsisThere are many books on polyneuropathy available that are comprehensive in nature. Many of these are encyclopedic in their scope. However, there are very few books that review the basics of clinical neurophysiological testing, genetics and the commonly encountered neuropathies. There are even fewer that are willing to address less commonly encountered neuropathies such as amyloidosis and neuropathies associated with HIV infection. Many such textbooks also avoid interdisciplinary topics such as the management of pelvic floor dysfunction and the surgical treatment of compression and traumatic neuropathies. This book addresses this void by dividing this book into three distinct sections. The first three chapter section addresses basic clinical neurophysiological techniques, genetic testing and the inherited neuropathies. The larger middle section addresses acquired demyelinating neuropathies, monoclonal gammopathies, HIV neuropathy and familial amyloidosis. The final section concludes with a summary of neuropathies affecting pelvic function and a plastic surgeon''s approach to the treatment of compression and traumatic neuropathies. The authors who wrote these chapters have extensive expertise in these topics such that the literature review was comprehensive. The final chapter on the surgical treatment of compression neuropathies may be viewed as controversial by some and even heretical by others but it provides a unique perspective on the management of patients who are symptomatic and yet have relatively unremarkable clinical and electrodiagnostic investigations. The reader will find up to date information on a variety of topics; common and uncommon. This book attempts to educate as well as challenge the reader.

Book SynopsisGliomas represent some of the most difficult tumours to understand and most challenging to treat. As illustrated in this book, the difficulty in understanding them is apparent in various ways. They have significant diversity in histology, genomic alternations, protein expression, clinical presentation, radiographic appearance, treatment approaches, and ideas of how to cure them. Our current understanding of the genetic mutations and signalling pathways that drive these tumours has greatly expanded our knowledge and at the same time, our uncertainty about how to combat these tumours. Added to this complexity is the fact that we are typically talking about tumours that infiltrate through an organ that many of us consider the "seat of our souls," where we must exercise the utmost caution in how we deliver treatments with great risks. This book begins with an introduction to this complex topic with a broad overview of grading criteria, histological features, common genomic alterations and affected signalling pathways, and current treatments. Most exciting is an extensive discussion on new therapeutic concepts and delivering mechanisms that arise from the complex field of nanotechnology where nanoparticles, nanotubes, and nanocrystals may someday become the Trojan horse.

  • The Central Catecholaminergic System: Anatomy,

Nova Science Publishers Inc The Central Catecholaminergic System: Anatomy,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe catecholaminergic system is one of the most studied neurotransmitter systems in the central nervous system. Since the original studies of Dahlström and Fuxe in the mid-60s, when they mapped the pattern of monoaminergic neurons using formaldehyde-induced flourescence technique developed by Falck and Hillarp, the distribution and the biological roles of catecholamines have been in the center of interest. It is clear now that catecholaminergic transmission not only plays a pivotal role in the modulation of stress response, but is also involved in numerous cortical functions, such as cognition, memory, learning, mood and behavior. Additionally, the catecholaminergic system appears to control vital hypothalamic functions. Several physiological processes, including growth, sexual regulation, and salt and water balance are regulated by catecholamines, either directly or via complex circuitries involving numerous neurotransmitter/neuroregulator systems. Both the involvement of catecholamines in Alzheimer''s and Parkinson''s diseases and their pivotal roles in schizophrenia and manic depression place these neurotransmitters in the focus of drug development that aims to address neurodegenerative disorders and psychiatric conditions. The present book attempts to give the reader a synopsis of the physiology and pathology of these important catecholaminergic functions.

  • Experiences & Views of Individuals with Fetal

Nova Science Publishers Inc Experiences & Views of Individuals with Fetal

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMinimal research has been conducted on giving a ''voice'' to individuals with a disability and especially those neurodevelopmentally disabled by foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). This is because in the past, people with learning disabilities have been deemed unworthy or incapable of participating in research (Kroll et al, 2005). What literature there is from this aspect tends to focus on either the ''lived experience'' of the biological mothers of the disabled offspring (Salmon, 2008) or the ''lived experience'' of foster-parents or caregivers raising an individual with this condition Symes (2004). However, it is important to understand that adults cannot speak for disabled children, youth and their siblings as their views and priorities are frequently dissimilar in subtle but important ways (Kroll et al, 2005). So, in order to understand foetal alcohol spectrum disorder, those individuals coping with the disability should be listened to as they describe the phenomena as they experience it. Only then will policymakers and government health agencies acknowledge the significant negative health impact and daily stressors that such a disability places on those affected. A person who has FASD is disabled in many cognitive areas on a daily basis, generally suffering a reduced standard of living and quality of life. Within society, these people are misunderstood, stigmatised, oppressed, marginalised and viewed as being different. These issues persist throughout the individual''s life, creating many stressors for the individual in daily living. Therefore, a need exists to explore and understand FASD through the experiences of those who have been diagnosed with the disability.
