Book SynopsisIntractable illnesses such as advanced cancer, AIDS, and chronic progressive neurological diseases present health-care professionals with an array of symptoms and ethical issues that demand extensive exploration and consideration. As the quest for advances in symptomatology continues, it is imperative to disseminate and integrate the knowledge currently available in palliative medicine. The International Symposium on Current Perspectives and Future Directions in Palliative Medicine was held in Tokyo in October 1997 to provide health-care professionals with a multidisciplinary approach for improving comprehensive palliative care. With invited speakers from North America, Europe, and Japan, the symposium focused on standard management and clinical trials of control of symptoms such as pain and cachexia, ethics in palliative medicine, the economics of health care, quality-of-life research, management of depression, and patient education.Table of ContentsSession I Symptom Control in Palliative Medicine: Standard Management and Clinical Trials I.- Recent Research in Pain and Cachexia in Advanced Cancer and AIDS.- Multidisciplinary Approach to Pain Control.- Malignant Intestinal Obstruction.- Session Summary.- Session II Symptom Control in Palliative Medicine: Standard Management and Clinical Trials II.- The Treatment of Chronic Nausea in Patients with Advanced Cancer.- Therapy of Febrile Neutropenia: An Algorithm for Current Clinical Attitudes Taking into Account Cost Benefit.- Alleviation of Dyspnea in Patients with Advanced Cancer: Usefulness of Opioid.- Session Summary.- Session III Depression: A Major Psychological and Emotional Problem.- Depression in Patients with Advanced Cancer.- Depression in HIV-Infected Adults: Newer Concepts.- Euthanasia, Social Policy and Empirical Data.- Session Summary.- Session IV Ethics in Palliative Medicine.- Euthanasia in the Netherlands: A Flat Country on a Slippery Slope?.- Evaluation of Do-Not-Resuscitate Policy in Japan.- Ethical Dilemmas and Advanced Directives in Japan.- Session Summary.- Session V Health Economics in Palliative Medicine.- Health Economics of Palliative Therapy.- Economic Evaluation of Health Care for Chronic Diseases.- Recent Trend and Problems of Health Economics in Japan: Application of Clinical Economics to the Treatment for Cancers and Intractable Diseases.- Session Summary.- Session VI Quality of Life (QOL) Research.- Quality of Life Evaluation in Chronic Illness.- Quality of Life in Palliative Medicine: Current Status and Problems of QOL Research in Japan.- Session Summary.- Session VII Patient Education and Ethics.- Complementary Medicine.- Support with Information, Education and Counselling in Patients with Advanced Cancer and AIDS.- Patients’ Perceptions of Palliation in Japan.- Session Summary.- Key Word Index.

Book SynopsisThe aging of society is a growing concern in all advanced nations, and at the forefront of concern is long-term care for frail older people. Enactment of a new public long-term care insurance program by the Japanese government in 1997 provided an excellent opportunity for a conference focusing on an ideal long-term care system for frail older people. The conference was organized around four major themes: Social aspects, including family dynamics and the role of formal providers; Clinical aspects, including effective treatments for physical and mental disabilities; Macroeconomic and macropolitical settings for public policy; Program design and management issues. With contributions from the fields of medicine, nursing, social work, gerontology, political science, economics, and sociology, this volume provides an overview of key problems and possible solutions in programs for frail older people from a unique international perspective.Table of ContentsSession 1 Social and Family Aspects of Care.- and Summary.- Commentary: Will We Have the Wisdom to Learn?.- From the Perspective of the Older Person.- Improving the Quality and Expanding the Quantity of Long-Term Care Staff.- Social Aspects of Care and How They Relate with the Medical.- Women’s Roles as Caregivers: Family, Worker, Volunteer.- Role of the Family in Long-Term Care.- The Relationship Between Informal and Formal Care.- Summary of the Discussion for Session 1.- Session 2 Clinical Aspects of Care.- and Summary.- Commentary: Preparing Health and Social Clinicians for Holistic Care.- Maintaining Physical Functioning of Frail Older People.- Physicians’ Roles in the Geriatrics Interdisciplinary Team.- The Role of Nurses in Long-Term Care for the Elderly.- Issues Physicians Must Face Under Long-Term Care Insurance.- Interface of Acute and Long-Term Care: Clinical Perspective.- Training of Physicians for Long-Term Care.- Long-Term Care: The Need for Special Medical Supervision and Collaboration Between Health and Social Services.- Long-Term Care and Dementia.- Summary of the Discussion for Session 2.- Session 3 The Macroeconomic and Macropolitical Setting.- and Summary.- Commentary: Macroeconomic and Macropolitical Setting.- Financing the Ideal Long-Term Care System Through Social Insurance.- Learning from Other Countries’ Experiences in Designing the Ideal Long-Term Care System.- Long-Term Care Within National Social Policy.- Financing Long-Term Care: What We Can Learn from the German Experience.- Long-Term Care and the Labor Market.- How the System Can Be Sustained Politically.- Market Elements in Financing and Delivering Long-Term Care.- Summary of the Discussion for Session 3.- Session 4 Program Design.- and Summary.- Commentary: Cross-Cutting Themes in the Provision of LTC.- Effective Care Management.- Japan’s Long-Term Care Insurance System: The Likely Impact on Service Suppliers and Their Staffs.- Models of Long-Term Care That Work.- The Development of Strategies for the Demented Elderly in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area.- Achieving Quality in Institutional and Home-Based Long-Term Care.- The Role of Housing in Long-Term Care for Old People.- Balancing Institutional and Home and Community-Based Care.- Summary of the Discussion for Session 4.- Letter From Tokyo: Public Long-Term Care Insurance in Japan.- Biographical Sketches of Participants.- Addresses of the Participants.

Amazing Books S.L. One Health: Cambio climático, contaminación

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book attempts to provide we general physicians with a conveniently sized work for daily reference. It deals with an area of medical practice which is rapidly changing. For that reason regular updating with new material will need to be considered. The book does not profess to be encyc1opaedic. In order to keep the size of the book within bounds. there are no sections devoted solely to psychological medicine or to paediatrics. but the book does deal with the more common diseases as revealed by morbidity studies. The main section of the book-A-is concerned with these commoner diseases and is set out in conventional fashion. It is in two parts; the one dealing with therapeutics. the other with clinical phannacology. The second section-B-reviews therapy in some selected areas. Cancer. pain and tenninal care. contraception. and hyperlipoproteinaemias. It also contains pieces on common emergencies. home renal dialysis and tropical diseases in non-tropical countries. The creation of 'pain c1inics·. and the possibilities for the treatment of intractable pain are innovations calculated to be more widely used as we become more aware of theirvalue. The field of rehabilitation is one of which we general physicians are on less familiar ground. To say that by us it is a neglected field is perhaps not too strong a statement. The section on Drugs concentrates on the practical side of drug administration and hence the stress is on the incompatibilities. side etfects and contraindications.Table of ContentsSection A: A Guide to Modern Treatment.- Therapy of Common Diseases.- Drugs in Current Use.- Section B: Selected Aspects of Therapy.- 1 Common Emergencies.- 2 The Treatment of Neoplasia.- 3 Pain and Terminal Care.- 4 Some Uses of Local Analgesics, Phenol and Alcohol in Intractable Pain.- 5 Hyperlipoproteinaemias and Their Treatment.- 6 Home Renal Dialysis.- 7 A Guide to the Treatment of Tropical Diseases in Non-Tropical Countries.- 8 Contraception.- 9 Rehabilitation.- 10 Prospects in Medical Treatment.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisMedical students are to a large extent taught by people who have undertaken little or no formal study in the field of education. Although formal study of any subject is no guarantee of satisfactory on-the-job performance, teaching practice itself without a knowledge of the fundamental princi ples of education is likely to bring distortions into the teaching situation. Our own experience leads us to believe that many teachers are concerned at this lack of expertise. This concern is manifest by their willing participation in activities which provide them with practical assistance in improving their educational skills. Unfortunately, few books have been written to aid the average clinical teacher wishing to gain a perspective on basic educational principles or seeking suggestions on how these might be applied to teaching. A previous publication by the Advisory Centre for University Education (ACUE) at the University of Adelaide, entitled University Teaching, has proved to be very popular, both locally and overseas, and has clearly met the needs of organi zers and participants in teacher training programmes in tertiary institutions. The success of this publication, and our experience with a variety of educational activities organized for staff of medical and dental schools and postgraduate organizations, led us to believe that a pragmatic educational guide for medical teachers would be of value to all such teachers and particularly to those asked to undertake an educational task for the first time.Table of ContentsOne: Giving a Lecture.- Student learning.- The purpose of the lecture.- The context of the lecture.- What do the students require of the lecturer?.- Preparing the lecture.- Presenting the lecture.- What additional techniques are available?.- Variations in manner and style.- Active participation.- Use of audiovisual aids.- Handouts.- Student note taking.- Evaluating the lecture.- Guided reading.- Two: Making a Presentation at a Scientific Meeting.- Presenting a paper.- Preparing the paper.- The collection and selection of data.- The arrangement.- Polishing, writing it out and rehearsal.- Preparing the abstract and your contribution to the.- proceedings of the conference.- What you should do on the day.- Preparing a conference poster.- Guided reading.- Three: Teaching in Small Groups.- The importance of small groups.- What is small group teaching?.- Managing a small group.- Structure in small group teaching.- Dealing with difficulties.- Introducing stimulus materials.- Alternative small group discussion techniques.- One-to-one discussion.- Buzz groups.- Brainstorming.- Plenary session.- Evaluation discussion.- Evaluating small group teaching.- Informal.- Formal.- Guided reading.- Four: Teaching Practical and Clinical Skills.- The attributes of an effective clinical teacher.- Improving ward-based teaching.- Improving the clinical tutorial.- Alternatives to traditional ward teaching.- Techniques for teaching particular practical and clinical skills.- The clinical interview.- The physical examination.- The use of instruments and basic equipment.- Guided reading.- Five: Planning a Course.- Who should be responsible for course design?.- Objectives and course design.- Writing objectives.- Knowledge objectives.- Skill objectives.- Attitudinal objectives.- Relating objectives to teaching and learning activities.- Relating objectives to assessment methods.- Sequencing and organizing the course.- Other course design considerations.- Evaluating the course.- Guided reading.- Six: Assessing the Students.- The purpose of the assessment.- Summative assessment.- Formative assessment.- What you should know about educational measurement.- Validity.- Reliability.- Norm-referenced versus criterion-referenced.- assessment.- Assessment methods.- 1. Springer Medicine in Three Societies: A comparison of medical care in the USSR, USA and UK

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is a personal testimony of faith in the future and in the progression to better health and a better life. It is the testament of a rough and ready measuring device - a practising physician who sought to compare and contrast three systems of medical care to see what can be distilled from them to help us all in achieving better services for medical care. Medical care as a human and civic right is the con cern of us all. Seeking to live longer and in good health we depend on medical, social and welfare services to attain this goal. Yet it is quite obvious that there are limits and dilemmas that prevent anything but an unsatisfactory compromise. The resources that are available cannot meet all the calls. How then can we make the best use of the resources that we have? This must be the theme for this book. What can we learn from each other for the com mon good? Since we all are facing the same common prob lems, how do we go about resolving them? For example, how do the medical care services in the USSR, USA and UK cope with an acute heart attack, with a middle-aged woman with depression, with a brain-damaged child, with a road accident or with a case of measles? These are the common human factors involved.Table of Contents1 Medical care — common goals and common problems.- 2 National characteristics.- 3 Structure and patterns of medical services.- 4 First contact care.- 5 Specialist Ambulatory care.- 6 Hospitals.- 7 Preventive aspects of medical care.- 8 Public health and social services.- 9 Maternity and child care.- 10 Mental health care.- 11 The greater medical profession — medical manpower.- 12 Education and training.- 13 The present dilemmas of medical care.

Book Synopsisare numerous in-depth studies of student learning processes but, let me confess it, I found these singularly unhelpful while nervously waiting to take the plunge. Consequently, my own advice is, frankly, downright earthyl Notwithstanding educational theorists (who are all-too frequently arts men), I take it as axiomatic that the existing pattern of lectures, tutorials, practicals, etc. , common throughout higher scientific education, will persist for some time to come. A special word of thanks is due to Pearline Daniels, not only for translating my scrawl into typescript, but for the many helpful noises made at appropriate times. • Springer The Family Good Health Guide: Common Sense on Common Health Problems

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAlthough we have no good definition of 'health', all people have their own ideas of whether they are healthy or not. Based on personal experience and knowledge each person comes to accept that within themselves there is a normal range of feelings and performance, departure from which could be considered abnormal or unhealthy. Despite the many amazing technological advances made over recent decades it cannot be said that access to advanced medical care is the main determining factor in the healthiness or otherwise of a society. Even in these modern times most diseases and health problems are non-curable in the strict sense, and the scope for effective prevention of disease is more limited than some enthusiasts suggest. Individuals must appreciate the limitations of modern medical care and, while seeking to use the care available to best possible effect, accept that the responsibility for trying to prevent major disease rests in their own hands. In this book we have tried to present a balanced and realistic picture of the many factors that must be taken into account if optimum disease prevention and health maintenance are to be achieved. The health of your family is your responsibility. An understanding of what can go wrong, how it can be prevented or how it can best be coped with can only be helpful to you.Table of Contents1.- 1. Book SynopsisAs a young general practitioner new to the field I recall how stimulated and excited I was by reading Dr John W. Todd's papers in the Lancet some 20-30 years ago. It was as though a lot of dust had been blown away and I was able for once to see the situation of medicine much more clearly. He became one of my medical heroes to add to John Ryle, Henry Cohen and Rene Dubois - all of whom have influenced my own approach to medical care and caring of my patients. Now in 1981, it is a pleasure to write an introductory foreword to this book. The State oj Medicine represents the clear and honest thoughts of a most unusual person. Until his retirement John W. Todd was a general physician in Farnham, Surrey. He was relatively unknown to the medical profession outside Surrey apart from his occasional writings. The ten chapters show the build-up of wide experience and deep philosophy that accumulated during his years in practice. I find that I am as stimulated and excited now reading them, as I was 20-30 years ago. I may not agree with all that he writes and others likewise may disagree completely - but I commend the work as an invigorating experience.Table of Contents1 Medical education.- 2 The nature of maladies.- 3 Psychosomatic and functional disorders.- 4 Prevention.- 5 The right and wrong use of resources.- 6 The caring side of the health service.- 7 The delivery of medical care.- 8 The errors of medicine.- 9 The cults of medicine.- 10 The future of medicine.

Book SynopsisThe liver has been an organ of mystery for centuries. Slowly but surely its secrets have been disclosed by both basic research and clinically oriented investigators whose current concepts have been brought together in this book by authors from five different countries. Three major groups with many subgroups have made inroads into our better understanding of the liver. The first of these comprises the basic scientists whose study of single hepatocytes may provide the key to comprehension of mechanisms that will lead eventually to improvement in the morbidity and mortality associated with a variety of hepatic disorders. The second group has been concerned with studies in depth of the liver's response to a variety of hormones, drugs, viruses, and infections. Both early and late results are their concern in the diagnosis and treatment of the individual patient. A third group comprises the surgeons who have become increasingly aggressive in the removal of one or more segments of the liver. They have increased the scope of hepatic resection as a result of a better understanding gained from studies of various segments of the liver. They have accepted the term, segmentectomy, and have extended feasible procedures to include trisegmentectomy. Indeed, trans plantation of the liver has been successfully accomplished.Table of Contents1. Segments of the liver: the anatomical basis for partial hepatectomy.- 2. Book SynopsisMedicine is news. There is constant public interest in health and disease; in medical miracles and in breakthroughs; in medical disasters, failures and malpraxis ; in deficiencies and defects ofhealth services; and in the rising costs ofhealth care. Medicine is 'big business'. Physicians co me out near the top money earners in most medical care systems. In the Uni ted Kingdom the National Health Service (NHS) now costs over [6000 million a year ($ ro 800 million), a free service that costs every British man, woman and child [120 a year ($216) in direct and indirect taxes. But this is less than the [500 ($900) a year that medical care costs each person in USA and West Germany. In developed countries health care costs are approaching ro% ofthe gross national product (GNP). It is big business also in that in Britain the NHS is one of the largest employers; about I million Britons work as employees of the NHS, caring for the other 54 millions and in the USA the numbers are 5 million caring for 2. 5 millions. The provision of health services is full of problems and dilemmas. These problems and dilemmas cross all' national boundaries. All countries share the same problems and dilemmas. Problems of objectives, of standards, of effectiveness and efficiency, and problems of relations between the medical profession, the public and govern ment.
