Rutgers University Press Hollywood on Location An Industry History

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisProvides the first comprehensive history of location shooting in the American film industry, showing how this mode of filmmaking changed Hollywood business practices, production strategies, and visual style from the silent era to the present. The contributors explore how location filmmaking supplemented and later, supplanted production on the studio lots.Trade Review“Joshua Gleich and Lawrence Webb have edited an exemplary book of essays on Hollywood location filming. It is chronologically comprehensive in its covering the US film industry from the silent era to contemporary productions, as well as unfailingly astute and insightful. This is a book that all who are interested in US commercial film should read--scholars, students, and fans alike.”— Stanley Corkin, author of Starring New York: Filming the Grime and Glamour of the Long 1970s “Location filmmaking evokes a wide range of contradictory meanings—from the roughness of the handheld action scene to the technical polish of the runaway production, from the specific rendering of place in the regional drama to the anonymous depiction of the generic modern city in the contemporary international production. Drawing on archival research and close readings of dozens of films, Hollywood on Location offers a new history of location filmmaking, doing full justice to this complexity. Carefully distinguishing Hollywood location work from various alternatives, such as Neorealism and the New Wave, the authors show how the economics, technology, aesthetics, and logistics of location filmmaking developed over the course of a century—before, during, and after the studio system.”— Patrick Keating, editor of Cinematography "This is a work that should be cited in any subsequent analysis of Hollywood location filmmaking and would be an appropriate assignment for any undergraduate or graduate classes on the subject."— Journal of Popular Culture "The individual voices in Hollywood on Location come together to provide a consistent, succinct and enlightening history of location shooting."— Times Literary SupplementTable of ContentsContents Introduction Joshua Gleich and Lawrence Webb 1. Book SynopsisWhen the 2016 Oscar acting nominations all went to whites for the second consecutive year, #OscarsSoWhite became a trending topic. Yet these enduring racial biases afflict not only the Academy Awards, but also Hollywood as a whole. Reel Inequality examines the structural barriers minority actors face in Hollywood, while shedding light on how they survive in a racist industry.Trade Review"Anyone who is interested in who is 'in the room where it happens' and who is left out will applaud this thoughtful treatise." * Booklist *"Full of diligent research, intimate interviews, and astute observations all presented in accessible language, Reel Inequality provides profoundly practical recommendations on how audiences and industry pros alike can create a more authentic media landscape." -- Adam Moore * leading diversity expert, National Director of EEO & Diversity for SAG-AFTRA *"The rainbow is not mono-chromatic. Nancy Yuen's excellent study illuminates the embedded cultural and economic system known as Hollywood where Asian Americans and others aspire to and work to be included." -- Clyde Kusatsu * National VP Los Angeles SAG-AFTRA *“With laser-like accuracy, Reel Inequality dissects Hollywood’s colorblind racism and reveals why the struggle for increased diversity in TV and film has been such a long and frustrating one." -- Darnell Hunt * author of Black Los Angeles *"Reel Inequality highlights the institutionalized racism and implicit bias actors from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds experience while trying to work professionally in Hollywood. Yuen offers empowering recommendations for effecting change within and outside of the industry." -- Monica White Ndounou * author of Shaping the Future of African American Film *Nancy Wang Yuen points out in Reel Inequality: Hollywood Actors and Racism, that actors of color generally have fewer acting opportunities, all as a result of the homogeneity of the directors’ chairs and writers’ rooms of Hollywood. Her study found that 77 percent of casting calls specify a white actor. Her book is filled with other firsthand accounts from anonymous Hollywood sources that seem to reinforce the sad truth that a mostly white industry is going to advance the interest of mostly white actors. In one interview, a Latina actor told Yuen that a casting director friend asked for her opinion on a Latino casting decision, since the director only knew “maids and gardeners” who were Latino. -- Kenneth Lowe * Paste Magazine *Sociologist and author of Reel Inequality, Nancy Wang Yuen was recently quoted in an excellent Paste magazine piece on whitewashing in Hollywood. One casting director told Yuen: “I work with a lot of different people, and Asians are a challenge to cast because most casting directors feel as though they’re not very expressive. They’re very shut down in their emotions…” As the quote began to percolate around Twitter, other people were understandably angry too, and it led to Maurene Goo starting the hashtag #ExpressiveAsians. It received an excellent response… Yuen was certainly pleased with the reaction. Speaking on the hashtag, Yuen told indy100 that "social media is amplifying previously unheard voices - providing a platform for marginalised folks and allies to protest issues like whitewashing, stereotyping, and other exclusionary practices that have gone unchecked in Hollywood for too long." -- Josh Withey * indy100.com *Social media is not happy about a quote regarding Asian-American actors not being expressive enough. At the heart of the controversy is a story told by Nancy Wang Yuen, sociologist and author of the book "Reel Inequality: Hollywood Actors and Racism." In the book, published last year, Yuen quoted an unnamed casting director who provided an explanation behind the challenges of casting Asian actors. "Asians are a challenge to cast because most casting directors feel as though they're not very expressive," the casting director said... The quote stirred a backlash on Twitter, with some taking the opportunity to show just how expressive Asian-Americans can be... Book SynopsisHollywood’s Hawaii is the first full-length study of the film industry’s intense engagement with Hawaii and the South Pacific from 1898 to the present. This book presents a history of cinema that examines Hawaii and the Pacific and its representation in film in the context of colonialism, war, Orientalism, occupation, military buildup, and entertainment. Trade Review"This book covers an entire history of 'Hollywood Hawaii' and does it in a superlative, utterly inclusive manner—in a text that is clear, concise, and deeply informative. This is a model of accessible, yet reliable scholarship." -- Wheeler Winston Dixon * author of Black and White Cinema: A Short History *"A marvelously comprehensive gaze at cinematic representations of Hawai`i, this insightful study shows how those fictions constitute and are constituted by US imperialism, Christian capitalism, and white nationalism. Moreover, the imagined South Pacific is not a distant, fleeting pleasure but an imminent, durable presence." -- Gary Y. • Serial Selves Identity and Representation in

Rutgers University Press Serial Selves Identity and Representation in

Book SynopsisSerial Selves considers how female, queer, disabled, and minority artists use autobiographical comics to make their experiences not only legible, but visible as well. Fusing methods from literary and visual studies, it explores how these artists on the margins challenge both the narrative conventions of autobiography and the norms of pictorial self-representation.Trade Review"In this engrossing and tremendously insightful book, Køhlert deftly analyzes comics as a visual form with the precision of a surgeon’s scalpel, paying close attention to the myriad ways comics authors use the formal elements unique to comics to express meaning and embody their intentions. By discussing these five authors in concert, Køhlert not only sheds new light on their individual works, but he also points to the potential for the medium to serve as a powerful vehicle to represent issues around the body. This is an invaluable text for anyone teaching comics." -- Nick Sousanis * author of Unflattening *"Serial Selves leaps past the existing scholarship on autobiographical comics, bringing a fuller sense of context and more diverse corpus. Persistently, and brilliantly, Køhlert reminds us that the choice between formal rigor and social engagement is a false one, and that comics studies at its best achieves both. Synthesizing a tremendous range of research—from autobiography theory, trauma theory, gender studies, disability studies, and other fields—he approaches neglected or misunderstood works, asks tough questions, and, in every case, uses close formal analysis to unpack issues of subjectivity and identity formation. A watershed work." -- Charles Hatfield * author of Hand of Fire: The Comics Art of Jack Kirby *"Acutely attuned to the formal properties of autobiographical comics, Frederik Byrn Køhlert argues that the drawn 'I' produces new knowledge about trauma, bodies, temporality, power, and resistance. Serial Selves persuasively demonstrates the complexity of autobiographical comics and their undeniable importance as a cultural and autobiographical form." -- Leigh Gilmore * author of Tainted Witness: Why We Doubt What Women Say About Their Lives *"This book offers a rich and varied set of positions through which this new revolution can be understood and celebrated, and should be of value and interest to readers approaching it from disparate positions." * The European Journal of Life Writing *"A lovely, insightful, and markedly entertaining read as well as a promising place for scholars interested in marginalized identities and autobiographical comics to begin. The blend of context, formal critique, intersectional scholarship, and intentionally limited scope is an admirable accomplishment." * Inks: The Journal of the Comics Studies Society *"The possibilities of comics as an avenue for visibility and accurate representation are repeated themes throughout Køhlert’s deep and thoughtful analysis of each author-artists’ work in Serial Selves. The result is a book written with the enthusiasm of pop culture lovers and underground comics fans, but useful in fields and interests beyond those boundaries." * Communication Booknotes Quarterly *"Analyzes the ways in which minority artists create illustrations, and the context and messaging behind the images created in a broader sense....Graduate students, scholars and professionals interested in comics and the media might find this book to be a helpful tool." * Communication Booknotes Quarterly *"Serial Selves contributes to a now established scholarly field of life writing within comics studies....Through detailed formal analysis, Kohlert's work carefully examines the highly visual nature of living in a marginalised body. The book brings attention to the various ways in which authors engage directly with their visual selves and challenge conventional representational schemes." * Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics *"Køhlert has a very clear and accessible writing style, advantageous in discussing the theory associated with the various case studies, rendering the complex readily explicable. He covers the work of the major comics thinkers in a seamless fashion, so that when it comes to the discussion of the authors in their case studies, the reader is fully prepared in terms of the overarching theoretical framework. Køhlert impresses further in each of the case studies, as he is also able to address the theory relating to disability, feminist and queer issues amongst others. He moves easily from theory to the analysis of the detail of the comics he studies in a clear and lucid way." * European Comic Art *Table of ContentsContents Acknowledgments Introduction: Serial Selves 1 Female Grotesques: The Unruly Comics of Julie Doucet 2 Working it Through: Trauma and Visuality in the Comics of Phoebe Gloeckner 3 Young, Queer, and Female: Ariel Schrag’s High School Comic Chronicles 4 Staring at Comics: Disability and the Body in Al Davison’s The Spiral Cage 5 Stereotyping the Self: Toufic El Rassi’s Arab in America Conclusion: Making an Issue of Representation Notes Bibliography Index

Rutgers University Press Going Viral Zombies Viruses and the End of the

Book SynopsisFrom 28 Days Later to 24 to The Walking Dead, movies, TV shows, and books are filled with zombie viruses, bioengineered plagues, and disease-ravaged bands of survivors. Going Viral analyzes why outbreak narratives have infected our public discourse and how they have affected the way Americans view the world. Trade Review"Schweitzer sets up shop at the intersection of culture, science and politics and demonstrates—with deep research and penetrating insight—that there are things far more menacing than viral threats." -- Jonathan Allen * award-winning political journalist & coauthor of Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign *"Going Viral contextualizes contemporary outbreak narratives in rich detail. Schweitzer's attention to context sets this work apart from others on the subject and does so in an utterly approachable way." -- Stacy Takacs * author of Terrorism TV: Popular Entertainment in Post-911 America *"A highly infectious read. Schweitzer's thought-provoking and meticulously researched account clearly outlines the relationship between the reality of viral threats and the Hollywood dramatization of the 'outbreak narrative.'" -- Terry Matalas * 12 Monkeys co-creator, executive producer *"Going Viral promises to become a viral sensation. In this elegant, provocative and clever book, Dahlia Schweitzer tackles one of the most controversial and anxiety provoking fears of the twenty-first century: the disastrous end of the world, evoked by either plagues, infections, diseases or outbreaks. Full of knowledge and wit, Schweitzer's innovative scholarship is a joy to read. She is a trailblazer in transdisciplinary scholarship and helps us all better understand what will continue to keep us awake at night." -- Karen A. Ritzenhoff * Central Connecticut State University, coeditor of The Apocalypse in Film *"Dahlia Schweitzer is one of the world’s leading analysts of popular culture, in every conceivable manifestation. She is also one of our best writers: engaging, concise, yet alluring in the best sense. Going Viral takes on one of the questions of our time: the American obsession with sickness as a way of dealing with difference. Bravo!" -- Toby Miller * Universidad del Norte, Colombia *"Going Viral is an incisive and expertly-informed exploration of the anxieties that drive contemporary America; the fears of contagion that shape our public discourse, movie narratives and government policy.

Book SynopsisThe Indecent Screen explores clashes over indecency in broadcast television among U.S.-based media advocates, the Federal Communications Commission, the TV industry, and audiences. Cynthia Chris focuses on decency debates since the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which have called into question the roles of family and government, and the value of free speech. Book SynopsisOnly at Comic-Con examines the relationship between exclusivity and the proliferation of media industry promotion at the San Diego Comic-Con, from the convention’s founding in 1970 to its current status as a destination for hundreds of thousands of pop culture fans and a hub of Hollywood hype and buzz.Trade Review"This is an important book for fan studies and beyond. Not only a brilliant exploration of Comic-Con’s history and place in contemporary culture, it also takes seriously aspects of this experience that have been under-researched. What are the meanings and values of waiting in line? How does Hall H operate? And how have licensees become so central to the event? Assessing fans’ liminal positioning, Erin Hanna acutely theorises 'exclusivity' and its (re)configurations. Start the queue here – this is a must-read for anyone interested in aspirational and affective labor, as well as Hollywood’s attempts to build cultural capital for its blockbusters." -- Matt Hills * author of Fan Cultures and Doctor Who: The Unfolding Event *“This exciting, well-researched book situates Comic-Con within the confluence of fandom, industry, and convergence. Book SynopsisWith more than 250 images, new information on international cinema, an expanded section on African-American filmmakers, updated discussions of new works by major American directors, and a new section on the rise of comic book movies and computer generated special effects, this is the most up to date resource for film history courses in the twenty-first century.Trade Review"This is the film history book we've been waiting for." -- David Sterritt * chairman, National Society of Film Critics *"A Short History of Film is a comprehensive and detailed overview of the last 100 years of international film history. It will prove to be a useful reference tool for all students of film, both in and out of the classroom." -- Paula J. Massood * Brooklyn College, CUNY *"A new history of international film at an affordable price. Nothing like those text book prices for a change. Includes perspectives on women and minorities in film along with innovations in technology, genres, studios, and conglomerates." -- Stephanie Ogle * Cinema Books *"This excellent introduction stands out in a crowded field with its lively, accessible writing, broad coverage, and particular focus on traditionally marginalized figures in film history...the most striking aspect of the book is the coverage of women, African Americans, and Third World filmmakers, which strongly complements its solid coverage of American and European film. Illustrations abound, and even the best-versed cineaste will find new films to track down after reading the breezy, enthusiastic analysis in this book. Highly recommended for all collections, this text would also make an excellent textbook for introductory film-studies courses." * Library Journal starred review *"With the goal of offering 'a fast paced tour' of movie history, Dixon and Foster have produced a study in the tradition of Paul Rotha's The Film till Now. The authors touch all the bases--they address new trends in international moviemaking, technologies, and critical theory and the emergence of new national and ethnic cinemas--and relate film history to social history. Each new technique, style, school, trend, and newly visible ethnic or feminist group takes its place in the larger history, and Dixon and Foster make it all accessible to the neophyte reader without ever breaking the pace. Uncommonly well-reproduced stills and a topically organized bibliography enhance the discussion. Highly recommended." * Choice *"Significant University Press Titles for Undergraduates, 2012-2013" * Choice *"One of the more important features is the focus on women directors who may not be well known to the general public; this makes the book timely and a welcome change from older film textbooks that are more implicitly biased. Rutgers University Press Broadcasting Hollywood The Struggle over Feature

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisUses extensive archival research into the files of studios, networks, advertising agencies, unions and guilds, theatre associations, the FCC, and key legal cases to analyse the tensions and synergies between the film and television industries in the early years of television.Trade Review"Broadcasting Hollywood unpacks a convoluted postwar industrial trail to presciently detail the complexities of Hollywood and TV's deep, awkward, but ultimately long-lasting affiliation. Dispensing with the idea of a studio-vs-network throw-down, Jennifer Porst shows how historical change is driven instead by the interactions of multiple stakeholders and intermediaries. This book shows why film histories must reckon with intermedia, and helps push reductive contemporary theories of convergence, transmedia, and disruption off their lazy perches as one-stop explanations for the digital era. A must-read for those interested in film history, digital media, and media industries." -- John T. Caldwell * Distinguished Research Professor, UCLA, author of Production Culture: Industrial Reflexivity and Critical Practice in Film and Television. (2008). *"Drawing on a trove of unexplored archival sources, Jennifer Porst has written a brilliant new addition to the field of media industry studies. Focused on the past but with revealing insights about the present—and future—Broadcasting Hollywood should be required reading for media students and researchers across film, television, and digital media." -- Michele Hilmes * Professor Emerita, University of Wisconsin-Madison *"A compelling and incisive argument that to understand media convergence today we need to explore the past. Porst brings alive all that was at stake in the first real disruption of Hollywood. Part courtroom drama, part detective story, Broadcasting Hollywood brings to life current debates between studios, networks, creatives, the government. Want to prepare for the future of media? • Broadcasting Hollywood The Struggle over Feature

Rutgers University Press Broadcasting Hollywood The Struggle over Feature

• Destructive Sublime World War II in American

Rutgers University Press Destructive Sublime World War II in American

Book SynopsisTraces a new aesthetic history of the World War II combat genre by looking back at it through the lens of contemporary video games. Tanine Allison locates some of video games' glorification of violence, disruptive audiovisual style, and bodily sensation in even the most canonical and seemingly conservative films of the genre.Trade Review“The spectacular violence of war cinema is explored with insight and subtlety in this fine volume. Centered on expressive violence as the signature subject of WWII film and video, Allison's important study embraces a subject that is often ignored -- the allure of screen violence in the genres of war representation.”— Robert Burgoyne, author of "The Hollywood Historical Film" “Destructive Sublime is a beautifully written, clearly conceived, and well theorized reconceptualization of how combat sequences offer counternarratives that trouble the notion of World War II as the 'good war.' Deploying theorists such as Edmund Burke, Paul Virilio, and André Bazin, Tanine Allison has provided us with crucial formal language to read the spatial relations and aesthetics of combat, from the understudied insertions of documentary footage into fiction films to the visceral pleasures of digital renditions of battles in video games. This is exciting work and should be required reading for anyone in the fields of digital studies, media studies, film studies, and war studies.”— Anna Froula, co-editor of Reframing 9/11: Film, Popular Culture, and the 'War on Terror' “Tanine Allison challenges our conventional understanding of Hollywood’s World War II combat movies. She skillfully demonstrates how their scenes of violence and destruction counter the myths about a 'good war' or a 'greatest generation.'”— Stephen Prince, author of Classical Film Violence and Savage Cinema “A compelling contribution to research on war and representation.” — Stacy Takacs, author of Terrorism TV: Popular Entertainment in Post-9/11 America "Chronicle of Higher Eduction weekly book list," by Nina C. Ayoub— Chronicle of Higher Education "Refocusing our attention on World War Two combat sequences, Allison usefully unsettles the generic construction of 'the good war,' highlighting the diverse and often contradictory aesthetic forms and affective appeals that structure the representation of violence in American film and media. Through consideration of production histories and contemporary critical reception alongside close textual analysis, the book offers a timely and accessible account of material that remains formative to the cultural imagination of war today."— Jonna Eagle, Professor of American Studies at University of Hawai'i, ManoaTable of ContentsIntroduction: A Retrospective Look at the World War II Combat Genre 1 “No Faking Here”: The New Authenticity of Wartime Combat Documentaries 2 The “Good War”? Julie Grossman explores the notions of female ambition, frustration, and intelligence that undergird the power and fascination of the femme fatale across time and media.Trade Review"In this lively and engaging book, Julie Grossman elegantly traces the long tradition of the femme fatale figure in film, television and popular culture. She deftly analyses a diverse range of characters, from Theda Bara’s vamp in early Hollywood, the hard-boiled dames of classic Film Noir, to the complex and vibrant Villanelle in contemporary television’s Killing Eve. Grossman persuasively illustrates the centrality of role performance to these femme fatale figures, and establishes performance as a key mode by which they resist inequalities in social structures. Readers who know Arcand's feature films since The Decline of the American Empire will also learn a great deal about those films as well as Arcand's overall feature-film corpus, which goes back to the early 1970's." -- Jerry White * editor of The Cinema of Canada *"Jim Leach proves a sure-footed guide to an enigmatic filmmaker whose long career 'has spanned the entire history of modern Quebec cinema.' The detailed treatment of every entry in Arcand’s eclectic filmography contextualizes each work according to genre, production history, and moment in time. Leach’s book is especially strong in its consideration of Arcand’s films in relation to the culture and politics of Quebec, and in the ways the films cite, reflect, and comment on each other." -- David Pike * author of Canadian Cinema since the 1980s: At the Heart of the World *"This is a clear and comprehensive introduction to the texts and contexts of one of Quebec and Canada's leading film directors, bringing out his significance via insightful readings of his works in terms of both their national and international dimensions." -- William Marshall * author of Quebec National Cinema *"Skilfully presented by Leach who then goes on to examine Arcand’s films chronologically from his time at the National Film Board, where his documentary work proved at times too challenging for his paymasters....Leach is a perceptive and sympathetic critic." * British Journal of Canadian Studies *"Leach knows how to work through the tangle of Quebec film criticism—a must with a much-debated director like Arcand— and he acts as a judicious mediator for the anglophone academic reader." * Canadian Journal of Film Studies *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Foreword Introduction: Denys of Quebec Chapter 1: Alone or with others: Arcand and the Quiet Revolution Chapter 2: Subjective documentaries: Arcand at the NFB Chapter 3: Dirty money: Arcand's crime films Chapter 4: Fall and rise: Arcand and the American empire Chapter 5: Of beauty and death in the digital epoch Chapter 6: Living in the shadows: Arcand and contemporary Quebec Filmography Works cited Index
