C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd Reporting the Retreat: War Correspondents in
Book SynopsisThe British defeat in Burma at the hands of the Japanese in 1942 marked the longest retreat in British army history and the onset of its most drawn-out campaign of World War II. It also marked the beginning of the end of British rule, not only in Burma but also in south and south-east Asia. There have been many studies of military and civilian experiences during the retreat but this is the first book to look at the way the campaign was represented in the Western media: newspapers, pictorial magazines, and newsreels. There were some twenty-six accredited war correspondents covering the campaign, and almost half of them wrote books about their experiences, mostly within a year or two of the defeat. Their accounts were censured by government officials as being misinformed and sensationalist. More recent historians, on the other hand, have criticised them for being too patriotic and optimistic in their coverage and thus giving the public an unrealistic view of how the war was progressing. Philip Woods returns to the original sources to asses the validity of these criticisms. His is the first re-evaluation of the war correspondent's role in Burma and as such will be of great value to students of journalism and media.Trade Review‘This clearly-written book will be useful not only to those people interested in the early phases of the war in Burma but also those who wish to understand the challenges of journalists who still find themselves in the ‘fog of war’ during 21st century conflicts.’ -- New Books Asia'At last, a new angle on the Burma campaign. Philip Woods offers an entirely fresh perspective by focusing on the war correspondents who were there, offering an intimate portrait of momentous events. In so doing, the book sheds new light on the activities of the colonial government and the maligned Governor, the plight of fleeing civilians, and the actions of imperial armed forces.' * Ashley Jackson, Professor of Imperial and Military History, Defence Studies Department, King's College London *'Reporting the Retreat is a brilliant book. It is meticulously researched, clearly written and cogently argued. Every student of late-colonial Burma or war reportage should read it. Woods weaves both strands into an elegant 'history from the side.' He manages to judge colonial politicians, military leaders and war correspondents with magisterial authority and deep humanity.' * Michael D. Leigh, Research Associate, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; author of 'The Evacuation of Civilians from Burma: Analysing the 1942 Colonial Disaster' *

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Language of Journalism: A Multi-genre Perspective
Book SynopsisThe Language of Journalism aims to provide an accessible, wide-ranging introductory textbook for a range of students. The book explores the significance of a range of linguistic practices occurring in journalism, demonstrating and facilitating the use of analysis in aiding professional journalistic and media practice. The book introduces the differences in language conventions that develop across media platforms. It covers all the key journalistic mediums available today, including sport, online and citizen journalism alongside the more standard chapters on magazine, newspaper and broadcast journalism. Clearly written and structured, this will be a key text for journalism students.Trade ReviewThe Language of Journalism's impressive theoretical analysis will satisfy the most demanding scholar, while its clarity of purpose and expression will also enlighten those new to the subject. Higgins and Smith's critical analysis is clearly linked to appropriate and interesting empirical examples; extraordinarily useful for scholars, teachers and students. The book is essential reading for any serious student of the power of language and its use within all aspects of journalism. -- Mick Temple, Professor of Journalism & Politics, Staffordshire University, UK, Co-editor, Journalism Education; Co-convener, Media & Politics Group, PSAThis book is a pleasure to read. Its pages brim with ideas that will challenge students and professors alike. The authors are to be commended for their critical appraisal of the language of journalism. Readers are brought to the core of understanding journalism with a focus on the place of language in how stories are built and understood. Key concepts and the techniques of language and discourse analysis are outlined before the authors dissect the role of language in broadcast, print and online journalism. They make a very strong case for why language is central to unraveling the conundrum of what we understand journalism to be today. -- Kevin Rafter, Senior Lecturer in Political Communication & Associate Dean for Research, Dublin City University, IrelandThrough rich analysis of examples from contemporary journalism, this book does an excellent job of introducing readers to analysis of journalistic language. The authors achieve the difficult task of introducing readers to discourse analysis while also remaining firmly focused on the value of that in understanding our media, from the way live news achieves its appeal to how readers of consumer magazines are invited to make sense of themselves. Above all, the book gives readers a wide range of tools to think in greater depth about the way journalism’s textual practice constructs versions of our world. -- Donald Matheson, Senior Lecturer, School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Canterbury, NZAngela Smith and Dr. Michael Higgins explore the media’s use of language to purposely and inadvertently maintain the societal status quo. The chapters are clearly organized with plenty of subheadings throughout and a labeled conclusion, which, again, could be helpful for students. It would be a good reading for use in an introductory media and society course…It, thus, provides a useful contribution to our academic field. -- Alyssa Appelman, Pennsylvania State University * Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements 1.Introduction: Why should we study the language of journalism? 2.Broadcast Journalism 3.Magazine Journalism 4.Newspaper Journalism 5.Sports Journalism 6.Online and Citizen Journalism Bibliography Index

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Government Communication: Cases and Challenges
Book SynopsisThis book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Government communication is a curiously neglected area of discursive analysis. No considered examination of the subject exists which provides either an account of the contemporary governmental landscape or an explanation of the common and divergent themes on both a domestic and international basis. This volume aims to fill that gap, providing a concise and illuminating case-study based review of government communication. It will be divided into three sections to reflect differences in both geography and political allegiances, scrutinizing continental Europe, Anglo-American traditions and newly emerging democracies. Offering a global and thematic account, it is an indispensable resource for all students of political communication.Trade ReviewThis tour of how different governments communicate to press and publics is led by top scholars in the field. The authors have created a valuable sourcebook on an important and changing topic. -- Lance Bennett, Professor of Political Science and Ruddick C. Lawrence Professor of Communication, and Director for the Center for Communication & Civic Engagement, University of Washington, USIt has been about time that somebody maps the field of government communication, a field with ever increasing scientific and political importance. This book does the job and it does it theoretically as well as with a plethora of empirical data from no less than 15 countries around the world. For years to come this book will be the first stop for scholars and practitioners seeking information on what is out there and how it can be normatively assessed on blurring lines between information and advertising or spin and substance. -- Wolfgang Donsbach, Professor and Founding Director, Department of Media and Communication at Dresden University of Technology, GermanyThis is a much needed and deeply thoughtful book about Government Communication. The authors have brought together a carefully selected group of comparative case studies from around the world using the Freedom House Index as the basis for choice and analysis. The result is a rich picture of the purpose, structure and process of Government Communication in different settings, or to use Canel and Sanders words, 'what it is' and 'what it does'. This seminal text plugs a gap in our knowledge and understanding in a growing area of study and as such is essential reading for both academics and practitioners. -- Anne Gregory, Professor and Director, Centre for Public Relations Studies, Leeds Metropolitan University, UKAs somebody who is sometimes described as a 'spin doctor,' it is a pleasure to read a book on government communication that depicts leaders and citizenry in a relationship, rather than simply manipulation from the top. Using rich case studies in fifteen countries, Karen Sanders and María José Canel analyze the different ways governments cope with growing uncertainty in the world of politics and media and the importance of strategy and perspective over tactics and rapid response. -- Stanley Greenberg, Chairman and CEO of Greenberg Quinlan Rosner ResearchTable of ContentsIntroduction: Mapping the Field of Government Communication Section One: Continental European Approaches: from Advertising to Marketing: 30 Years of French Government Communication Meeting the Challenges? Bonnier Books Ltd Grains of Truth - A Grain of Truth & Another
Book SynopsisThis title brings together Jack Webster's two volumes of autobiography. The first part brings to life his homeland of Buchan in the north-east of Scotland. He describes in detail his childhood years in Aberdeenshire with stories of honest hard-working folk, people with often dour exteriors and a sharp, wry sense of humour twinkling beneath. From his childhood, the story moves on to the early years of his career on the "Turiff Advertiser" and his time at the "Scottish Daily Express", with tales of his travels and meeting with the famous all over the world. The second part continues his story, opening with the "roup" in Maud, the auctioning of his family farm, and going on to tell stories and anecdotes of the famous and not-so-famous inhabitants of his native Buchan - people like his great grandfather, Gavin Greig, a scholar of international repute, and the celebrated writer, Lesi Grassic Gibbon, who tragically died at the age of 33. Whether writing of his meetings with the rich and famous, of great events, bloody murder or simply his memories of his childhood, Jack Webster displays the qualities of writing that has made him one of Scotland's best-loved journalists. He is the author of "Famous Ships of the Clyde".

Lawrence & Wishart Ltd Grunwick: The Workers' Story
Book SynopsisGrunwick was the strike that changed the rules of the game.It changed the way the unions thought about race, about their own core values, and about the best way to organise among the new immigrant communities coming to Britain in the 1970s. Moreover, it changed the way unions thought about the law, and raised big questions about their will to win.In the beginning, Grunwick wasn't a strike about wages - it was about something much more important than that. It was about dignity at work. And, for the small band of Asian women strikers, who braved sun, rain and snow month-in and month-out on the picket-lines, from August 1976 to July 1978, rights in the workplace and pride at work, were far more important than any amount of money. At the time, this book was the seminal account of the dispute, providing the workers' own story in their own words and told by two of the leading participants in the strike. Now, forty years later, its themes still resonate, making this book vital reading for all of those who seek to organise within their own communities and workplaces.Table of ContentsNote on the textList of Illustrations'We are the Lions, Mr. Manager!', TimRoacheGrunwick: The Workers' Story -Foreword, Jack DromeyIntroduction, Graham Taylor1978 ForewordChronology1. BenBella Books Risk Game: Self Portrait of an Entrepreneur
Book SynopsisPrior to the real-estate boom of the 1980s, Francis J. Greenburger risked it all to buy three older loft buildings at 50 West Street near the current 9/11 Memorial. He ultimately dreamed of one day erecting a magnificent skyscraper in their place. But disaster struck in 2008, just as his plans were coming together, and development came to a screeching halt. The global financial crisis had made the land practically worthless and it would be years before he could get back on track, but he refused to give up on his dream.Today, 50 West is a striking 780-foot skyscraper with curved glass windows that has become an iconic feature on the city skylinebut it took much more than a financial investment to get there. It required Greenburger to do what he does besttake huge risks at every turn.During his parallel careers, Francis J. Greenburger has made publishing and real-estate history. Whether risking the reputation of his agency for the super -star authors of tomorrow, such as James Patterson to Dan Brown, or pioneering the New York co-op market by taking "hopeless" properties and turning them into prized homes, he has successfully navigated the worlds of business, politics, and social change to become the quintessential American entrepreneur.A math and business prodigy who started working for his father at the age of 12. After a stopand-start academic career, he voluntarily left one of the most elite and academically distinguished New York City high schools and started his adult life at 15. Greenburger has made it his life's work to find value where others never thought to look, and his keen instincts and innovative strategies have taken him from a high-school "dropout" to a well-educated self-made billionaire.Francis has mastered the "risk game." Now, with Rebecca Paley's gripping prose, he takes us behind the scenes in Risk Game and reveals firsthand how he has become a self-made force in the competitive world of New York real estateand a champion for nonprofit organizations in the fields of art, education, and, most recently, social and criminal justice.Trade Review"I have enormous respect for Francis's willingness to stand alone, confident in his assessments and keen to withstand the pressures of consensus-driven inclinations. His autobiography inspires us to do the same." Bob Wilmers, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, M&T Bank "Francis is one of the most decisive people I know. He made a commitment to invest in our first venture capital fund in a five minute cab we shared to work one morning." Fred Wilson, cofounder, Union Square Ventures, venture capitalist and blogger "Francis Greenburger's story is an inspiration to all. Anyone who cares about social justice and is motivated to turn words into action should look at the example Francis has set through his commitment to changing the world for the better. Everyone can learn something from Francis's experience and I am glad to call him a friend." Congressman Jerry Nadler "Watching the development of Art Omi must be like watching Francis develop a real estate project. Great independent vision, attention to detail and love of all forms of discovery. It just works." Alan Fishman, chairman, Ladder Capital and Brooklyn Academy of Music "For Francis, buildings are not just real estate; through his diligence and determination, they are a chance to accomplish something truly important." Helmut Jahn, architect, 50 West Street "Francis Greenburger is truly a 21st century renaissance mana highly successful real estate entrepreneur and developer, a literary agent and scout, an art patron and supporter, and an advocate for social and criminal justice, especially with respect to the rights of the incarcerated mentally ill. Greenburger's life storyand his life's passionsare at once fascinating and highly motivational." Mitchel Wallerstein, president, Baruch College "Francis Greenburger is deeply committed to civic engagement, but his passion for advancing badly needed reforms of America's broken criminal justice system sets him apart. The work he has so passionately dedicated to this cause has helped move change forward in innumerable ways." Senator Cory Booker "Francis is an almost instinctual developer of new things: he develops buildings, cultural institutions, and vehicles for progressive social change . . . with eleganceand all without ever wasting a single wordwhich makes his opinions and guidance on arts ventures such as Art Omi and MASS MoCA exceedingly valuable." Charles Benenson, real estate developer and investor and Time Equities Inc. Book SynopsisJodocus Badius Ascensius (1462-1535) was a scholar and printer who played a central role in the flourishing of humanism and print culture in the French Renaissance. In a career spanning four decades, he was involved with the print publication of something approaching one thousand editions. He was known for the ''familiar'' commentaries he wrote and published as introductions to the major authors of Latin (and, less frequently, Greek) antiquity, as well as on texts by medieval and contemporary authors. His commentaries and prefaces document the early stages of French humanism, and his texts played a major role in forming the minds of future generations. This book provides an account of Badius''s contributions to pedagogy, scholarship, printing and humanist culture. Its main focus is on Latin language commentaries on classical texts. It examines Badius''s multiple roles in the light of changing conceptions of textual culture during the Renaissance. It also explores the wider context of tTable of Contents1. The University of Chicago Press Darwin and the General Reader
Book SynopsisDrawing on his investigation of over one hundred mid-Victorian British newspapers and periodicals, Alvar Ellegard describes and analyzes the impact of Darwin's theory of evolution during the first dozen years after the publication of the Origin of Species. Although Darwin's book caused an immediate stir in literary and scientific periodicals, the popular press largely ignored it. Only after the work's implications for theology and the nature of man became evident did general publications feel compelled to react; each social group responded according to his own political and religious prejudices. Ellegard charts the impact of this revolution in science, maintaining that although the idea of evolution was generally accepted, Darwin's primary contribution, the theory of natural selection, was either ignored or rejected among the public.
