Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Tyranny of Ordinary Meaning: Corbett v
Book SynopsisThis book offers an in-depth analysis of the case of Corbett v Corbett, a landmark in terms of law’s engagement with sexual identity, marriage, and transgender rights. The judgement was handed down in 1970, but the decision has shaped decades of debate about the law’s control and recognition of non-normative gender identities. The decision in this case – that the marriage between the Hon. Arthur Corbett and April Ashley was void on the grounds that April Ashley had been born male – has been profoundly influential across the common law world, and came as a dramatic and intolerant intervention in developing discussions about the relationships between medicine, law, questions of sex versus gender, and personal identity. The case raises fundamental questions concerning law in its historical and intellectual context, in particular relating to the centrality of ordinary language for legal interpretation, and this book will be of interest to students and scholars of language and law, legal history, gender and sexuality. Table of ContentsChapter 1: IntroductionChapter 2: Intellectual BackgroundChapter 3: Legal Sex and MarriageChapter 4: The Decision in Corbett v CorbettChapter 5: Ordinary Meaning Beyond the Law/Fact DistinctionChapter 6: ConclusionIndex

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Metaphors of Brexit: No Cherries on the Cake?
Book SynopsisHow were social media posts, scripted speeches, traditional news media and political cartoons used and understood during the Brexit campaign? What phrases and metaphors were key during and after the 2016 Brexit referendum? How far did the Remain and Leave campaigns rely on metaphor to engage with supporters in communicating their political positions? These questions, and many others, can be answered only through a systematic analysis of the actual language used in relation to Brexit by the different parties involved. By drawing on a range of data sources and types of communication, and presenting them as 'frames' through which individuals can attempt to understand the world, the author provides the first book-length examination of the metaphors of Brexit. This book takes a detailed look at the rhetorical language behind one of the major political events of the era, and it will be of interest to students and scholars of linguistics and political science, as well as anyone with a special interest in metaphor, rhetoric, Brexit, or political communication more broadly.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Cherries on the Cake?.- Chapter 2: The Lexicon of the Referendum.- Chapter 3: I Love My Country.- Chapter 4: 'Take Back Control': The War & Invasion Frame.- Chapter 5: Conceptual Metaphors: 'The Brussels Bubble'.- Chapter 6: The Metaphors of Boris Johnson.- Chapter 7: Happy Families and Special Relationships.- Chapter 8: Are Marriages Made in Heaven?.- Chapter 9: Animals: Moral Intuition and Moral Reasoning.- Chapter 10: Metaphors for Brexit.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Tolkien as a Literary Artist: Exploring Rhetoric,
Book SynopsisThis book takes a fresh look at Tolkien’s literary artistry from the points of view of both linguistics and literary history, with the aim of shedding light on the literary techniques used in The Lord of the Rings. The authors study Tolkien’s use of words, style, narrative techniques, rhetoric and symbolism to highlight his status as literary artist. Dirk Siepmann uses a corpus stylistic approach to analyse Tolkien’s vocabulary and syntax, while Thomas Kullmann uses discourse theory, literary history and concepts of intertextuality to explore Tolkien’s literary techniques, relating them to the history of English fiction and poetry. Issues discussed include point of view, speeches, story-telling, landscape descriptions, the poems inserted into the body of the narrative, and the role of language in the characterization of the novel’s protagonists. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars of literature, corpus linguistics and stylistics, as well as Tolkien fans and specialists. Trade Review“This work will serve as a valuable reference for the serious Tolkien scholar for many years to come, laying the groundwork for future studies into the artistry of Middle-earth.” (Sharon L. Bolding, Mythlore, Vol. 41 (1), October, 2022)Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction.- Chapter 2: Tolkien as a Stylist: Key Words and Key Collocations.- Chapter 3: The Narrative Syntax of The Lord of the Rings.- Chapter 4: Points of View.- Chapter 5: Landscape Descriptions.- Chapter 6: Speeches and Declarations.- Chapter 7: Storytelling.- Chapter 8: Poems and Songs.- Chapter 9: Language and Character.- Chapter 10: Tolkien’s Position in Literary History.

De Gruyter Linguistic Supertypes: A Cognitive-Semiotic Theory of Human Communication
Book SynopsisThe book offers a completely new view of language and of languages such as Russian, Chinese, Bulgarian, Georgian, Danish and English by dividing them into three supertypes on the basis of a step-by-step examination of their relationship to perception and cognition, their representation of situations and their use in oral and written discourse. The dynamic processing of visual stimuli involves three stages: input (experience), intake (understanding) and outcome (a combination). The very choice among three modalities of existence gives a language a certain voice -- either the voice of reality based on situations, the speaker's voice involving experiences or the hearer's voice grounded on information. This makes grammar a prime index: all symbols are static and impotent and need a vehicle, i.e. grammar, which can bring them to the proper point of reference. Language is shown to be a living organism with a determinant category, aspect, mood or tense, which conquers territory from other potential competitors trying to create harmony between verbal and nominal categories. It is demonstrated that the communication processes are different in the three supertypes, although in all three cases the speaker must choose between a public and a private voice before the grammar is put into use.Trade Review"Durst-Anderson's theoretic discussions and illustrations of connections between perception, cognition and communication make for intriguing reading indeed."Anna Cabak Redei in: Cybernetics and Human Knowing,1-2/2014
