    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe diagnostic assessment of writing is an important aspect of language testing which has often been neclected in the literature. However, it is an area which poses special challenges to practioners both in the classroom and in large-scale testing situations. This book presents a study which set out to develop and validate a rating scale specifically designed for the diagnostic assessment of writing in an academic English setting. The scale was developed by analysing a large number of writing performances produced by both native speakers of English and learners of English as an additional language. The rating scale was then validated using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study showed that a detailed data-based rating scale is more valid and more useful for diagnostic purposes than the more commonly used impressionistic rating scale.Table of ContentsContents: Language testing – Language assessment – Writing assessment – ESL – Rating scale development – Rating scale validation – Diagnostic assessment – Diagnostic assessment of writing – Multi-faceted Rasch measurement.

The book starts by guiding the reader through the important but often overlooked steps of contextualizing their current or future language curriculum to give decision makers the full picture of what their curriculum is intended to accomplish. Subsequent chapters break down the popular ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate) model of curricular design into meaningful units focused on learner and context analysis, learning outcomes, assessments, materials, and implementation and evaluation processes. Accessible and engaging chapters include a variety of prompts, activities, and summaries to support learning and implementation. With instruction on how to build a language curriculum from scratch and insights for changing or improving an existing curriculum, this book is a key resource for instructors and program aTrade Review"This is a very timely book. This book lays out the ADDIE process for curriculum construction and likens it to building a solid house in a very principled approach backed by solid examples and time-proven steps. It also recognizes and accounts for a variety of settings for the multi-faceted types of English for Specific Purposes that more and more IEPs have needed to adapt to. Book SynopsisIn the context of Black Lives Matter, decolonizing initiatives, #MeToo, climate emergency protests and other movements for social and environmental justice, this volume posits a simple question: how can modern languages be taught so that they challenge rather than reinforce social inequalities?Informed by interdisciplinary theories, Critical Pedagogies for Modern Language Education focuses on practical discussions of case studies in areas directly relevant to the classroom contexts of modern languages educators. The volume transforms modern language educators and the modern language profession by putting the politics of language teaching at the centre of its analysis. With case studies covering 11 languages (Modern Standard Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Levantine, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Tamazight) across 13 countries and regions (Austria, Brazil, China, France, Italy, the Levant, Morocco, the Netherlands, Palestine, Spain, Sweden, the UK, and the USA)Trade ReviewThis edited volume urges us to engage with the liberatory and transformative potential of languages education and to actively reimagine our practice from critical, social justice and decolonizing perspectives. The carefully curated collection of chapters is underpinned by a diverse range of theoretical and conceptual frameworks as well as practical, polyphonic examples of classroom practice across sectors and geographical contexts. This compelling volume is essential reading for pre- and in-service language teachers and teacher trainers as well as researchers passionate about the enactment of critical language pedagogies. -- Adriana Díaz, Senior Lecturer in the School of Languages and Cultures, University of Queensland, AustraliaA forceful and passionate plea for incorporating politics into the language classroom. Fascinating case studies examine the teaching of 11 languages across 13 countries and discuss a range of current issues related to critical pedagogies and decolonization efforts in education. Pavilion Publishing and Media Ltd The Creative Teacher's Compendium: An A-Z guide

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisCreativity is an exciting concept in learning and teaching today, not least in the field of ELT, with numerous books, publications, conferences and websites dedicated to exploring ideas around the theme. The Creative Teacher's Compendium offers teachers an extensive repertoire of creative ideas and techniques to work with in the classroom, each one clearly linked to a language point with easy-to-follow teaching notes, and also to a section which provides further reflection and teacher development. The A-Z format provides a memorable and easily-referenced manual for teachers, with a large variety of low-preparation, practical teaching ideas. Through its clear links to specific language points and also to teacher reflection, The Creative Teacher's Compendium is significantly different in both its approach and content from other resource books on creative language teaching. Antonia and Alan do a lot of teacher training in various countries around the world, and regularly speak at conferences. The teachers we meet are forever asking us where they can get hold of all these lovely ideas, so they decided to put them in a book. The book provides an alphabetical list of chapters with topics related to creative language teaching, covering themes such as Art, Beginnings, Conversations, Dictation, Emotions, Film etc. Each chapter begins with a relevant quote related to the topic, followed by a short discussion of why this area is important for creative language teaching. This introduction provides a clear rationale and directs teachers to relevant research in the area. Then follow a series of creative activities which can be used as they are or easily adapted to suit teachers' and learners' needs. The creative activities are always clearly linked to suggested language points, and sample materials show how these can be explicitly exploited. The chapters end with ideas for reflective teacher development and tasks which can be used for workshops.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFully updated and packed with new material, the second edition of Thesis and Dissertation Writing in a Second Language is the ideal guide for non-native speaker students and their supervisors working on writing a thesis or dissertation in English. Considering the purposes of thesis and dissertation of writing alongside writer/reader relationships, this book uses accessible language and practical examples to discuss issues that are crucial to successful thesis and dissertation writing. This edition offers: Insights into the experience of being a doctoral writer, issues of writer identity, and writing with authority Typical language and discourse features of theses and dissertations Advice on the structure and organisation of key sections Suggestions for online resources which support writing Extracts from completed theses and dissertations Guidance on understanding examiner expectations Advice on publishing from a PhD Suitable for students from all disciplines, Thesis and Dissertation Writing in a Second Language is essential reading for non-native speaker students looking to complete a thesis or dissertation in English.Trade ReviewDoctoral Writing Blog (https://doctoralwriting.wordpress.com/recommended-reading/)The highly popular Doctoral Writing Blog recommends the book in these terms:Brian Paltridge and Sue Starfield’s Thesis and dissertation writing in a second language: A handbook for supervisors, London: Routledge, remains hard to beat. This book is for doctoral students who haven’t studied linguistics, and suspect that their supervisors and advisors are not that clear with spelling out how to meet the criteria that will please examiners. We’ve found that the focus on second language explanation makes this a wonderfully clear book for anyone. In a list of resources for doctoral students, the Blog says about our book: As a teaching resource this is probably the most well used book in my library. I return to it time and time again because it provides me with the confidence to say ‘research shows that this is a common pattern in thesis writing’. That’s really important for me. This use of empirical evidence makes the book stand out from the crowd – it’s so unlike those other writing advice books Anne Lee, University of Stavanger, Norway. There is a need for this book, internationally candidates are struggling with how to write their work up, and supervisors are struggling with how to help them. The pedagogical expectations from different cultural backgrounds are enormous. The market is growing, international doctoral candidates are a growing force in the UK (partially because of the funding difficulties that local students face). I think the various national Council’s for Doctoral/Graduate Education should be alerted to this book when it is published (EG UKCGE).This book is different from the competition as the focii of existing books are either on academic writing, supervising writing or a first language doctoral candidate writing their thesis up in English.I recommend that a second edition of this book is published.Professor Jerry Wellington, University of Sheffield, UKYes, I think there is a need for this book as most books of this kind do not focus as clearly on international students. Having said that, most of the points and guidelines in the first edition apply to all students: what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.Yes, I recommend publication. I like it and I know that our students will find it valuable, clear and helpful.Table of ContentsAcknowledgments; Author Biographies; List of tables, figures and boxes; 1 Introduction; 2 Becoming a researcher in a global world; 3 Issues in thesis and dissertation writing in English as a second language; 4 Writing a research proposal; 5 The overall shape of theses and dissertations; 6 Writing the introduction; 7 Writing the background chapters; 8 Writing the methodology chapter; 9 Writing the results chapter; 10 Writing discussions and conclusions; 11 Writing the abstract and acknowledgements sections; 12 Publishing from a thesis or dissertation; 13 Resources for thesis and dissertation writing; References; Index
