  • Spanish for Veterinarians 2e

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Spanish for Veterinarians 2e

Book SynopsisSpanish for Veterinarians, Second Edition, is designed to help you rapidly learn working Spanish for clinical conversations. Packed with the practical vocabulary information and conversational tools found in the first edition, the new edition now includes a new chapter on exotics and expanded information on the Spanish required for pre-consultation discussion. The pronunciation exercises, available online as audio files to help veterinary team members effectively and confidently use Spanish in their client communications, have also been revised and expanded. This new edition is a lively presentation of the Spanish that working vets increasingly need to know.Trade Review"A useful feature is access to a Web site where readers can listen to native pronunciation of words and download pronunciation exercises. As a teaching tool, this is priceless, particularly because most communications between veterinarians and Spanish speaking clients will be oral.... This book is a useful introduction to Spanish.... Any attempts to communicate to owners in their native language will be met with relief and appreciation, and the book succeeds in providing a basic working version of the Spanish language." - Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, December 2008Table of ContentsPreface ix Acknowledgments xi CHAPTER 1: Getting Started 3 Pronunciation of Spanish 3 Nouns and Plurals 5 Articles and Plurals 6 Names of Animals 6 CHAPTER 2: The Body and How to Describe It 11 Adjectives 11 External Body Parts 14 Internal Organs 15 CHAPTER 3: Verbs: Where the Action Is 19 Regular Verbs 19 Weak-Kneed Verbs 22 CHAPTER 4: Irregular Verbs 25 Four Essential Irregular Verbs: tener, estar, ser, and ir 25 World's Simplest Verb: hay 32 CHAPTER 5: How Long Has the Cow Had a Fever? 33 Duration of Time 33 The Present Perfect 34 The Verb dar 36 Feeding Vocabulary 37 CHAPTER 6: The Past and Accidents 41 Past Time Verbs 41 Accidents 46 CHAPTER 7: Telling People What to Do 49 Verbal Shorthand 49 Giving Commands 50 Giving Something to Somebody 53 Polite Suggestions 54 CHAPTER 8: Taking a Clinical History 57 CHAPTER 9: The Diagnostic Exam 61 CHAPTER 10: Cattle 67 Special Vocabulary 68 Illnesses 69 CHAPTER 11: Horses 75 Special Vocabulary 76 Illnesses 76 CHAPTER 12: Sheep and Goats 79 Special Vocabulary 79 Illnesses 80 CHAPTER 13: Swine 83 Special Vocabulary 83 Illnesses 84 CHAPTER 14: Dogs and Cats 87 Special Vocabulary 87 Illnesses 89 CHAPTER 15: Exotic Pets 93 Special Vocabulary 93 APPENDIX: Registration Forms 99 Answer Key to Exercises 103 Dictionary 109

Its aim is to build on that understanding through the development of general conversation skills and reading comprehension. The book follows the format of Spoken Vietnamese for Beginners as well: each lesson opens with conversations, a second section explains and gives additional examples of sentence structures and expressions, and a third section offers exercises based on the conversations as well as various readings. A fourth section provides grounding in expanded vocabulary. The conversations in this textbook revolve around a foreign student coming to Vietnam to study. In the conversations, people share opinions across cultures and ask for information ranging from the practicalities of travel to cultural awareness. • Spanish Grammar Companion for Teachers:

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Spanish Grammar Companion for Teachers:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis textbook boosts the confidence of persons teaching Spanish as a second language, who may lack confidence in their understanding of tricky areas of expression. Their previous training did not enable them to control (much less explain to others) the many “danger zones” which challenge graduate students serving as teaching assistants, in-service teachers, and others who use Spanish professionally. It offers original and insightful analyses, abundant examples and helpful English comparisons. It disarticulates the machinery of grammar into manageable parts. It is not intended for those beginning to learn Spanish (since it skips the basics to focus on the “rough spots”), but is directed to those who know Spanish well, yet need to overcome their nagging limitations in obtuse areas, e.g. subjunctive, reflexives, pronouns (neuter, relative, personal), adjective placement, ser/estar, preterite/imperfect, commands, gender, passive and impersonal expressions. There are special sections devoted to words easily confused with each other, use of the accent mark, irregular verbs, and sentence structure. It is useful for self-study and to supplement texts in composition, culture and linguistics courses. It benefits native-speaker teachers unfamiliar with the “why” of their language, as well as buttressing anglophone instructors of scant linguistic background. The result is a better prepared teacher and a more promising learning experience for the students.Table of ContentsLanguage Learning.- Verb Forms and Functions.- Nouns and their Modifiers.- Ways of BEing.- Personal Pronouns.- Prepositions and Adverbs.- Subjunctive.- Relative Clauses and Relative Pronouns.- Questions, Commands and Reported Speech.- Comparison, Negation and Coordination.- Passives and Impersonal Expressions.- Appendix A: The Spanish Written Accent.- Appendix B: Verbal Irregularity.- Appendix C: Sentences and their Structures.- Appendix D: Vocabulary Distinctions (words frequently confused with each other)

Book SynopsisThe volume offers a valuable result of a joint intercultural project between two universities from the neighbouring countries of Poland and Ukraine. Among the mass of books on intercultural communication, the proposed volume distinguishes itself by three features: unusual format combining the work of both scholars and students, the focus on the intracultural approach, and practical designation. It also stresses the increasing awareness in the modern world that teaching/learning English serves the purpose of developing general intercultural competence and not building the knowledge about the English speaking world. The choice of topics indicates an interesting cultural difference - Ukrainiar inclination to focus on the characteristic and attractive aspects of their own culture and Polish on the problematic and the difficult.Trade ReviewThe volume Developing Intercultural Competence throught English: Focuses on Ukrainian and Polish Cultures offers a valuable result on a joint intercultural project between two universities from the neighbouring countries of Poland and Ukraine. Book SynopsisThis book of Cantonese idioms is a pragmatic reference guide to everyday Cantonese conversation in Hong Kong. It will help learners understand speakers' intended meanings, since people do not always use the literal meaning of words or phrases in communication with others. Instead people often use metaphors and figurative language to express themselves. It is important to note that the metaphorical use of language is pervasive in all aspects of human discourse, including casual conversation as well as poetry. It provides coverage of over 1,800 entries of the most commonly-used Cantonese colloquial expressions. Entries are clearly grouped under ten different categories, with an index for ease of reference. The user-friendly Yale Romanization system is adopted, with a brief pronunciation guide.

The Chinese University Press Classical Chinese Primer (Reader)

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhile the teaching of Modern Chinese as a foreign language has made progress by leaps and bounds, the same cannot be said about the teaching of Classical Chinese. This is regrettable as the influence of the latter on the former in terms of both vocabulary and syntax is pervasive and profound, so much so that many of the subtler points and fine nuances in Modern Chinese will be missed unless one also has acquired at least a rudimentary knowledge of Classical Chinese. At the same time, a good and solid foundation in Classical Chinese is a must if one would pursue reading any text written before the 20th century. Moreover, precisely because Classical Chinese has ceased to be used as the official medium of written expression and a true proficiency in it can only be acquired through extensive reading of classical texts from China's long past, there is a real need for more fully annotated and clearly analyzed readers and other teaching aids designed especially for the beginning students.""Classical Chinese Primer"" is thus meant to be an attempt to address this urgent need in the teaching of Classical Chinese. Designed for those who have studied Modern Chinese for one or two years, but who have had no exposure to Classical Chinese before, ""Classical Chinese Primer"" is in a set of two volumes: the reader itself and a workbook. This reader includes forty lessons in total, covering selected readings from ancient fables, philosophical texts, as well as historical and literary writings. Each selection is accompanied by annotations and clear and jargon-free grammar notes. Beginners of Classical Chinese will find this reader useful in building up their basic grammatical knowledge of the language.
