  • Au Revoir Britannia

Luath Press Ltd Au Revoir Britannia

Book SynopsisDemons had been let loose, xenophobia and racism legitimised... But was it, in fact, the European Union that was the root of the referendum defeat, or was it a convenient and obvious scapegoat? Ironically, the day following, ‘EU’ was the most searched term on the internet. What was this institution that they had just decided to leave? Many people had, in fact, no idea.au revoir: (French)goodbye for the present; until we see each other again.Britannia: (Latin)a province of the Roman Empire to the north of Gaul.Is it goodbye to the eu forever for Britain?Has the good ship Albion sailed into an oblivion of its own making? From her unique perspective as former French ambassador to the UK, Sylvie Bermann examines the mistruths told by politicians surrounding the fateful 2016 Brexit referendum. Au Revoir Britannia asks the question ‘How did this happen?’ and exposes what she sees as the ‘unrepenting’ and ‘inveterate’ lies of the now pm, Boris Johnson. This first English edition includes a new preface exploring the future of post-Brexit Europe and Britain, and the uncertain implications of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

  • The Evolution of China's Diplomacy in the Modern

ACA Publishing Limited The Evolution of China's Diplomacy in the Modern

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAs China’s economy, global influence and interactions with other countries grow, its diplomatic strategy is attracting more and more interest internationally. This book aims to answer the following questions:What kind of development path has China chosen? What does China’s development mean to the world? What ideas and theories guide China’s diplomacy? What diplomatic policies does China pursue? How will China’s rise impact neighbouring countries? Will China break away from the traditional pattern of ‘a rising power always seeking hegemony’? Will developing countries benefit from China’s development? How does China define its international role and its participation in multilateral governance? How does China conduct public diplomacy? One of the key goals of China’s foreign policy is to develop mutually beneficial trade deals. The first and largest FTA (free trade agreement) China established with other countries was the ASEAN+1 FTA concluded in January 2010, which was also ASEAN’s first FTA with a foreign country. China ASEAN trade exceeded US$400bn in 2013, US$470bn in 2018 and is expected to reach US$1 trillion by 2020.While this book expounds the orthodox China view on its place in the world, its relations with other countries and its diplomatic strategy of peaceful cooperation and mutual benefit, it concedes that despite all parties’ best efforts, sometimes territorial disputes can’t be quickly or easily resolved. In such cases, China takes the pragmatic view that it’s OK for some problems to be put on hold pending future resolution, and the book explores many of the key problem areas in some detail such as the North Korean nuclear issue, the disputed China-India border and sovereignty over islands and territorial waters in the South China Sea.In terms of land and maritime border issues, the authors concede that whereas only two of 14 land borders with neighbouring countries remain unresolved (with India and Bhutan), to date China has yet to agree maritime borders with any of the eight countries with which it shares maritime borders.

GINGKO Iran and Global Decolonisation: Politics and

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisHow did Iran’s unique position in the world affect and define its treatment of decolonization? During the final decades of Pahlavi rule in the late 1970s, the country sought to establish close relationships with newly independent counterparts in the Global South. Most scholarly work focused on this period is centered around the Cold War and Iran's relations with the United States, Russia, and Europe. Little attention has been paid to how the country interacted with other regions, such as Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Adding to an important and growing body of literature that discusses the profound and lasting impact of decolonization, Iran and Global Decolonisation contributes to the theoretical debates around the re-shaping of the world brought about by the end of an empire. It considers not only the impact of global decolonization on movements and ideas within Iran but how Iran’s own experiences of imperialism shaped how these ideas were received and developed.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTogether with Mauritius, Botswana is often categorized as one of two growth miracles in sub-Saharan Africa. Due to its spectacular long-run economic performance and impressive social development, it has been termed both an economic success story and a developmental state. While there is uniqueness in the Botswana experience, several aspects of the country’s opportunities and challenges are of a more general nature. Throughout its history, Botswana has been both blessed and hindered by its natural resource abundance and dependency, which have influenced growth periods, opportunities for economic diversification, strategies for sustainable economic and social development, and the distribution of incomes and opportunities.Through a political economy framework, Hillbom and Bolt provide an updated understanding of an African success story, covering the period from the mid-19th century, when the Tswana groups settled, to the present day. Understanding the interaction over time between geography and factor endowments on the one hand, and the development of economic and political institutions on the other, offers principle lessons from Botswana’s experience to other natural resource rich developing countries. • Springer Nature Switzerland AG Migration and Integration Challenges of Muslim Immigrants in Europe: Debating Policies and Cultural Approaches

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAs the impetus of globalization continues to gather pace, more and more people leave their homes pursuing dreams of a better life for themselves and their families. Muslim immigrants converging on Europe from widely divergent communities scattered throughout North Africa, the Middle East and South-East Asia, represent a great variety of local cultures and traditions. Trans-Mediterranean networks form the basis of migration routes and are key factors in the destinations of these migrants and in the overall process of immigration, be this towards Europe or other Muslim countries. South-North fluxes intertwine with South-South fluxes, among which the Gulf Arab countries stand out as a prime destination, not only for low-skilled labour. Different situations emerge, within a variegated discourse on co-existence, integration, assimilation and the preservation of identity. The adoption of this transnational dimension incorporating both destination, and points of origin, enables the investigation of migration to move beyond a purely Eurocentric approach. Thus, different national patterns are analyzed with a focus on a number of significant case-studies. By debating policies and cultural approaches the aim is to add innovative scholarship to the challenge of integration. Cross-cultural pluralism on the part of the nation states comprising the European Union is one avenue for moving the dialogue between different cultural frameworks towards a more compatible form.Table of Contents

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book addresses the multiple dimensions of the limited reach, or breakdown, of central authority in border regions of Arab states, and their implications for state sovereignty and modes of governance. These include the emergence of illicit networks of exchange, the rise of new nonstate actors in border regions, including paramilitary or jihadi groups, and the transformation of border areas into areas of regional conflict. Collectively, the essays in this volume address such processes, which have been observable in conflict-stricken countries such as Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, and in fragile political or economic contexts, like the ones in Lebanon, Tunisia, and Algeria, as well as in relatively stable Emirates such as Kuwait. The contributions also shed light on how border peripheries in the Arab world have impacted the center of political and economic power in their states. Table of Contents1. Introduction, Maha Yahya2. Springer International Publishing AG Russia, China and the Revisionist Assault on the

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book analyzes Russian and Chinese revisionism in the face of US and Western post-Cold War liberal international order building and asks why both powers have turned revisionist in the late 2000s. The study develops a neoclassical realist model of international order building and contestation and posits to view revisionism as a strategic choice. States go revisionist if the status quo international order threatens their vital security needs (broadly defined not only as territorial security, but also political, economic, normative and ontological) and if they have the means to challenge the undesirable status quo. Russia and China were both unhappy with the post-Cold War international order of American designs, but had to opt for accommodation in the 1990s and early 2000s (“strategic accommodation” in the Chinese case, “resentful accommodation” in the Russian case), before revisionism became even more of a necessity and a real policy option from the late 2000s onward (“constructive revisionism” in the Chinese case, “destructive revisionism” in the Russian case). The author calls for a policy of neo-containment to counter Moscow’s and Beijing’s efforts to game and erode the international order.Table of ContentsPart I: Introduction.- Chapter 1: Enduring Rivals: The Return of Great Power Politics between Russia, China and the West.- Part II: Theory of International Order Building and Revisionism.- Chapter 2: Falling Short: International Order and Revisionism in IR Theory.- Chapter 3: Strategic Choices: Neoclassical Realist Model of Order and Revisionism.- Part III: Western Triumph & Non-western Accommodation in the 1990s.- Chapter 4: False History: Globalization of the US-led Liberal West and its Delusions.- Chapter 5: Russia’s Fall: Resentful Accommodation to Grim Post-Cold War Realities.- Chapter 6: China’s Rise: Strategic Accommodation to Post-Cold War Opportunities.- Part IV: Western Crisis & Anti-western Revisionism From the Late 2000s.- Chapter 7: Return of History: Outgrowth amidst Erosion of the US-led Liberal Order.- Chapter 8: Russia’s Nightmare: Destructive Revisionism for Great Power Survival.- Chapter 9: China’s Dream: Constructive Revisionism for “Great Rejuvenation”.- Part V: Conclusion.- Chapter 10: Geopolitical Realities: The Case for Neo-Containment against Russia and China.

Table of ContentsEmpirischer Überblick und theoretische Perspektiven.- Politik und Macht in multinationalen Unternehmen in Schwellenländern.- Nachhaltigkeit und multinationale Unternehmen in Schwellenländern.- Globale Arbeitsbedingungen im Wandel.- Regionale Expansionsstrategien in Europa.- Schlussfolgerungen.

What is this Europe that has indulged in the excesses of war and mass murder up to the end of the 20th century, but wants to see itself as incorporating the ideals of justice and goodness? Europe was never simply 'Europe', it always questioned itself, it had to understand itself as Europe and thus found its unity in its philosophy. This book looks forward to Europe's future with a new reading of key texts in Europe's modern philosophical reflection on itself.

Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden (Dys-)Functionalities of Corruption: Comparative

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisCorruption is usually understood as hampering political development, economic growth and democratic participation of citizens, but comparing the effects of corruption for different political regimes presents astonishingly complex findings. The ongoing persistence of corruption underlines that it is not only dysfunctional, but can be highly functional as well. This special issue brings together contributions from comparative politics, political science and economics which precisely focus on these (dys) functionalities of corruption in political regimes across various world regions. The question of methodological pluralism is especially important for studying corruption comparatively. While on an international level a trend towards an increased use of quantitative methods in political science as well as in economics can be observed, the special issue underlines the importance of having a pluralistic approach for grasping the complex and multi-layered effects of the phenomenon. Of similar importance is the adoption of a comparative perspective that includes different world regions in order to understand the different roles of corruption in developing, transforming and developed countries alike.Dr. Tobias Debiel is Director of the Centre for Global Cooperation Research and of the Institute for Development and Peace (INEF). Since 2006, he is also Professor in International Relations and Development Policy, Institute of Political Science, University of Duisburg-Essen.Dr. Andrea Gawrich is Professor for International Integration at the University of Gießen.

Book SynopsisThis textbook deals with the progressive global dissolution of political, economic, and social boundaries, which has significant implications for labor markets, the international division of labor, social security, and income distribution. Politically, it is eroding the sovereign ability of nation-states to shape their own affairs; socially, it conjures up the specter of an increasingly global culture of unity. Against the background of the empirical effects of globalization processes in a number of areas, the book discusses to what extent these fears are justified, whether they cannot also be explained by other developments, and whether the benefits of globalization justify the costs and risks resulting from it.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Globalization and technological development: production, transport and communication.- Political globalization: democracy, international organizations and global civil society.- Trade.- Foreign investment.- World financial flows.- Migration and globalization.- Globalization and employment.- Globalization and income distribution.- Statehood.- Globalization and the welfare state.- Globalization and democracy.- Globalization and culture.- Globalization and its adversaries.- Global governance.- Drying up of the sources of globalization or resilience.

Book SynopsisStefanie Mayer and Mikael SpAng take a close look at debates regarding (labor) immigration in Austria and Sweden by comparing discussions during the 1960s and 1970s with contemporary political discourse. The editors combine their research on institutional developments with elements of critical discourse analysis in a comparative perspective. The volume also includes comments from experts on migration issues from former emigration and/or EU-accession countries, such as Finland, Turkey, former Yugoslavia, and the Czech Republic, thereby, casting light on how migration issues have been discussed in different contexts.
