Book SynopsisTrade ReviewChak Kwan Chan’s Social Security in Hong Kong is a well-written book on Hong Kong’s social welfare policies. ... [T]his is an informative book which serves as a useful textbook or background reference for the study of Hong Kong society. * The China Journal *In this very well-written and richly detailed analysis, Chak Kwan Chan offers a convincing argument to explain why Hong Kong's social welfare system has remained highly residual as a result of skillful manipulation by colonial officials on traditional Chinese family values. The author's insightful analysis on the political economy of social welfare makes a significant contribution to the literature on East Asian social policy and social development. It should be widely read in the academic and policy communities. -- James Lee, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University[This] is among a handful of studies that have paid attention to the role of European imperialism in social welfare and should inspire more research into this neglected topic. It also offers important insights of relevance to social security policy in other parts of the world as well. -- James Midgley, University of California, BerkeleyThe book is probably the best I have read about social policy in Hong Kong. Tracing welfare development in Hong Kong, the author discusses the influence of traditional Chinese values on welfare, the interplay between British colonialism and Chinese socialism, and the striving of the local Hong Kong people to develop a system that links up welfare and democracy. -- Nelson Chow, University of Hong KongSocial Security Policy in Hong Kong is undoubtedly the outstanding book on social security and the nature of the welfare system in Hong Kong. Book SynopsisChina and Iran have featured heavily in the news in recent years. China is both a military and an economic superpower with 20% of the world''s population; Iran is suspected of developing nuclear weapons and arming terrorists, and sits on the world''s second-largest oil and gas reserves. They are also surprisingly close geographically: Iran is only 700 miles across Afghanistan from China''s extreme western border. A 25-year, $100 billion deal to supply China with oil and gas and the large number of Chinese companies operating in Iran shows that the two are moving increasingly close in both political and economic terms. But what does this mean for the rest of the world, and especially for ''the West?'' Edward Burman examines how the strikingly similar histories of these two ancient civilisations can inform what the likely consequences for the world of an alliance between them might be.

Book Synopsis How an evolving relationship with China and India is changing Latin America''s political and economic dynamics. In the years since China has adopted a going global strategy to promote its overseas investment, expand export markets, and gain much-needed access to natural resources abroad, SinoLatin American relations have both deepened and broadened at an unexpectedly rapid pace. The main driver behind this sea change in bilateral relations has been economic complementarity, with resource-rich countries in Latin America exporting primary goods to the Asian giants'' growing market and China exporting manufactured goods back into the region. In recent years, SinoLatin American relations have matured considerably, becoming far more nuanced and multifaceted than ever before. India is a relatively new player in the region, but has slowly strengthened its ties. As one of Asia''s largest markets, it offers interesting parallels to the Chinese case. Will IndoLatin American ties follow a similar path? The main areas of growth include trade and investment, mining, energy, information technology, motor vehicle production, and pharmaceuticals. To what extent these changing dynamics will redefine Latin America''s relations with India is a question of increasing relevance for policymakers. This volume offers a review of key cross-regional trends and critical policy issues involving the changing relationship between these two Asian giants and Latin America. Selected country case studiesArgentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexicoprovide a more in-depth analysisof the implications of China''s and India''s evolving interaction with the region.

Book SynopsisThis book presents an accessible and state-of-the-art survey of current research on social dilemmas. A social dilemma arises when actions that are justifiable in terms of individual rationality (e.g. over-harvesting resources, or using private instead of public transportation) threaten the common good and in the long run the individual''s own self-interest as well. The study of social dilemmas has important links with many areas in psychology, as well as with cognate disciplines such as risk analysis, environmental science, political science, and economics. Accordingly, the book should appeal not only to psychologists but also to a wider audience of scholars and researchers. Contributors include both established authorities and recent innovators, and the organization and contents of the book reflect the most recent trends in this exciting area. Increased attention is given to modeling dynamics and processes in social dilemmas, and greater emphasis placed on exploring structural solutiTable of ContentsM. Foddy, M. Book SynopsisThis book examines how international investment arbitral awards can be facilitated. It sets out to achieve a fuller conceptualisation and theorisation of awards through a discussion of relevant issues and themes, as well as demonstrating how they can be achieved through a comparative approach that has been conceived and developed with reference to existing deficiencies in the research literature. This contribution is particularly important given the worldwide emergence of investment arbitration as a powerful form of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). The book ultimately seeks to explore and develop solutions that can be directed to an existing oversight and deficit within the international investment architecture. In considering the advantages and disadvantages of each âsolutionâ, it will work towards an approach best-suited to upholding the interest of the victorious party at the enforcement stage. • Latin American Economics

Taylor & Francis Latin American Economics

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisUntil fairly recently, many economists looked at Latin America with horror and dismay. Burdened by debt, and ravaged by hyperinflation and unemployment, it was often characterized as a financial disaster zone. Even now, many commentators consider that this resource-rich part of the world underperforms in comparison with other emerging economies. And how to explain stark differences within the area, such as the poor growth rates of the Atlantic-facing countries of Venezuela, Brazil, and Argentina compared with the Pacific Alliance? More precisely, how do the various Latin American economies function? And what are the future prospects for the region? As serious research on and around Latin American economics continues to blossom, this new title from Routledge's Critical Concepts in Economics series addresses these and other questions. In four volumes, the collection provides a much-needed compendium of foundational and the very best cutting-edge scholarship.

Book SynopsisHow Brexit will work for Britain and EuropeFULLY REVISED EDITION FOR THE UK''S PATH TO BREXITMaking a Success of Brexit and Reforming the EU is the authoritative text on the EU and the Brexit debate. This major new edition lays out how the UK can best make a success of Brexit and the place of Europe in the new, Trumpian world. In a major rewrite, award-winning economist Roger Bootle addresses the issues of trading relationships, hard versus soft Brexit, concerns of key industries, Scotland and the future of the EU and NATO. Roger Bootle, the author who successfully predicted the financial crash and the outcome of the referendum, will also examines the possible future developments of Europe.Trade ReviewI recommend our diplomats and ministers read this book: it will provide them with an intellectual backbone. This will be the essential vade mecum if and when a referendum campaign takes place. The part of Bootle's book in which he analyses the pros and cons of British exit from the EU will be the most influential. * The Sunday Times *Maps out a fresh start for UK-EU relations. Bootle writes with energetic prose and makes some good points. His discussion of European monetary union is cogent. * Financial Times *Bootle is right on every count. * Guardian *Roger Bootle perceptively analyses what is wrong with the European Union as presently constituted, both politically and economically; what reforms are needed to make it wise for the UK to remain a member; and how we can most sensibly conduct ourselves outside the EU, should those reforms not be undertaken. It is essential background read- ing for any future in/out referendum. -- Rt. Hon. Nigel Lawson, former Chancellor of the ExchequerAn outstanding, grown-up account of the failures of the European Union. Bootle is certainly no little Englander, but his argument is calm, conversational, rigorous and - quite remarkably for an economist - entirely free of bafflegab. Engaging and absorbing, here is an eye-opening book that will inspire you to think through the issues clearly - with- out starting a saloon-bar brawl. * Daily Telegraph *As I have come to expect from Roger Bootle, he gets to the heart of the matter with crystal-clear analysis and punchy comment. It's the best book yet on the European Union's dysfunctionality. -- Jeff Randall, Sky News business presenterBrilliant, albeit radical solutions. One of the most thoughtful accounts that I have yet read about the European question. * Independent on Sunday *This is a credible plan for life outside Europe and deserves to be widely read. * The Week – Business Books of the Year *A well-informed and rigorously-argued book. -- David Marsh, co-chairman of OMFIF, and author of 'Europe’s Deadlock'

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Dealing in Securities: The Law and Regulation of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBegins with the essential questions: - whether brokerage and dealing in securities is regulated in a jurisdiction - what aspects of the activity could bring it in scope for authorisation; and - how it is determined which regulator has legal competence to supervise the business in scope. The recent liberalisation of national authorisation regimes across Europe in the wake of MiFID II and Brexit, which has resulted in tensions with recent attempts by the EU to harmonise centrally the single market authorisation regime, is fully addressed. It reviews the details of the activities of sales, sales trading, trading and execution, what they each constitute (with reference to established communication and order management systems), the potential conflicts of interest that they bring about for a firm and how such conflicts can be managed. Each of these activities are mapped against specific regulatory obligations, such as best execution, pre- and post-trade transparency, inducements, dealing commissions rules, the short selling regime and shareholder disclosures, depicting the obligations schematically to assist the practitioner. Also covers: - dealing commission unbundling, which has reformed the way the provision and consumption of independent research and corporate access are related to execution services, - the question of multilateral trading, in other words the point at which the activity of a broker becomes exchange-like and needs to be authorised as such, - principal trading and the ability of firms to advance risk to their clients in the wake of the Volcker rule in the United States and similar legislation in Germany and elsewhere, - the rise of Systematic Internalisers and the constraints imposed on them, such as the pre-trade transparency requirements and the tick size regime, and - electronic trading, algorithmic trading, direct electronic access and high frequency trading, as well as the risk control framework that is relevant to all these activities. This title is included in Bloomsbury Professional's Banking and Finance online service.Trade ReviewEssential reading. 7 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this searing exposÃformer Wall Street insider Nomi Prins shows how the 2007-2008 financial crisis turbo-boosted the influence of central bankers and triggered a massive shift in the world order. Central banks and international institutions like the IMF have overstepped their traditional mandates by directing the flow of epic sums of fabricated money without any checks or balances. Meanwhile, the open door between private and central banking has ensured endless opportunities for market manipulation and asset bubbles -- with government support. Through on-the-ground reporting, Prins reveals how five regions and their central banks reshaped economics and geopolitics. She discloses how Mexico navigated its relationship with the US while striving for independence and how Brazil led the BRICS countries to challenge the US dollar''s hegemony. She explains how China''s retaliation against the Fed''s supremacy is aiding its ongoing ascent as a global superpower and how Japan is negotiating the power shift from the West to the East. And she illustrates how the European response to the financial crisis fueled instability that manifests itself in everything from rising populism to the shocking Brexit vote. Packed with tantalizing details about the elite players orchestrating the world economy -- from Janet Yellen and Mario Draghi to Ben Bernanke and Christine Lagarde -- Collusion takes the reader inside the most discreet conversations at exclusive retreats like Jackson Hole and Davos. A work of meticulous reporting and bracing analysis, Collusion will change the way we understand the new world of international finance.

  • Economic War: Ukraine and the Global Conflict

C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd Economic War: Ukraine and the Global Conflict

Book SynopsisVladimir Putin's first invasion of Ukraine, in 2014, set off a global economic clash, as the West used its clout with international markets to deter and penalise the Kremlin. The battlelines of this 'war by other means' traversed a series of deep economic connections, built up during Russia's oil, gas and commodities boom: global equity and capital markets, and transnational kleptocracy. Maximilian Hess's startling book lifts the lid on Russia's response to Western sanctions, and the ensuing skirmishes in London's courts, on Swiss trading desks and in boardrooms in New Delhi. He explores how pipelines, mines, loans and crypto-markets were weaponised. This narrative sets the stage for Putin's all-out assault on Kyiv in February 2022, which turned financial, food and fuel markets into bona fide battlefields, bringing the fight into everyone's home, from Pennsylvania to Pakistan. • The Failure of the Free Market and Democracy: And

Profile Books Ltd The Failure of the Free Market and Democracy: And

Book SynopsisIn this wide-ranging but accessible overview, economist Daniel Ritter examines the changing circumstances that have led to the economic decline of the West and the rise of populism. He looks at the effects of globalisation and how increasing mechanisation has fuelled discontent, the collapse of existing communities, and a sense of disenfranchisement. The fault, he argues, lies not with advances in technology, or a lack of growth, but in rising inequality and an over-reliance on the free market. Examining the West's situation in a global context, both in relation to the rise of China and the ascendancy of private interest groups, he claims that the free market has failed, and with it representative democracy, arguing that we must 'update our very notions of work and reward' if we are to survive the current crisis. Informed, lucid and strongly argued, Ritter's compelling analysis is a must-read for anyone concerned to discover the origins of our current economic and political malaise, and its possible solutions.

Book SynopsisWinner of the Penang Book Prize 2019 Nusantaria – often referred to as ‘Maritime Southeast Asia’ – is the world’s largest archipelago and has, for centuries, been a vital cultural and trading hub. Nusantara, a Sanskrit, then Malay, word referring to an island realm, is here adapted to become Nusantaria - denoting a slightly wider world but one with a single linguistic, cultural and trading base. Nusantaria encompasses the lands and shores created by the melting of the ice following the last Ice Age. These have long been primarily the domain of the Austronesian-speaking peoples and their seafaring traditions. The surrounding waters have always been uniquely important as a corridor connecting East Asia to India, the Middle East, Europe and Africa. In this book, Philip Bowring provides a history of the world’s largest and most important archipelago and its adjacent coasts. He tells the story of the peoples and lands located at this crucial maritime and cultural crossroads, from its birth following the last Ice Age to today.Trade ReviewThis fast-paced book by a respected journalist describes how the islands and coastal territories of Southeast Asia have consistently been a crucial element in world history … The book is a good corrective to global histories that tend to study the world from a European- or Sino-centered perspective … [It] brings forward a lively story about how trade, religion, and culture crossed many boundaries, including oceans, from earliest recorded history, centrally involving the islands and coastal territories of Southeast Asia. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty. * CHOICE *Bowring, in a remarkable display of taut writing, whisks us through the archipelago’s geological eruption and mythic floods to the rise and fall of multiple port states and emerging regional dynasties and into the modern era of disruption, decay and dismemberment in less than 300 pages. At the same time, he does a wonderful demolition job on Beijing’s self-serving take on Asian history. * South China Morning Post *[Bowring] writes this rich and rambling history as in fact a narrative of change and renewal … It is not easy to convince policymakers that history might be the place to look for solutions, yet we have nowhere else to turn to imagine what might yet be possible. * Literary Review *Beautifully presented with numerous informative maps, excellent illustrations and a very useful glossary, it is both a fascinating read and a very valuable history of one of the world’s most important regions. * Baird Maritime *A fascinating book ... packed with names, dates and events as Asia's Great Archipelago is packed with islands—well over 30,000 on anyone's count ... An important and timely book ... [For the general reader] who is looking to better understand a complex and pivotal region of the modern world, Empire of the Winds is a must-read. * Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society *Rich in detail, and laced with vivid anecdotes ... Bowring notes that Nusantaria is just as vulnerable to climate change as it was after the Ice Age ... will the book's excellent maps of Nusantaria have to be drawn again? * The Correspondent *This hardcover book is handsomely produced with a beautiful dust jacket showing fine Nusantarian galleys in the Moluccas, recorded during the Louis de Freycinet expedition of 1817–20. It’s a volume that offers readers a deeper understanding of the vibrant maritime peoples and events that unfolded literally on Australia’s tropical northern doorstep, to better appreciate the complex development of the human, political and economic region that we inhabit. -- Jeffrey Mellefont * New Mandela *In contrast and happy opposition to the national frameworks that nowadays limit most historical understandings of the diverse islands and coastlines that make up Southeast Asia—or Nusantaria, as he calls it, Bowring weaves a bright tapestry stretching across the centuries and the oceans to capture our eyes and minds, and remind us of the significance and richness of this often misunderstood corner of the world. * Ooi Kee Beng, Penang Institute (Malaysia) *Philip Bowring has produced an absorbing and timely history of maritime Southeast Asia. Ranging from prehistoric times to the present, he deftly harnesses an impressive range of sources into a compelling and fast-paced narrative. Bowring has important things to say about how disparate elements – of geography, culture, economic relations and political dynamics – have shaped a complex region that has long been central to global history. * Gareth Richards, Judge, Penang Book Prize 2019, founder of Gerakbudaya Bookshop Penang and Hikayat *Table of ContentsList of Maps and Illustrations Glossary Preface Introduction 1. Book SynopsisRupert Murdoch’s extraordinary career has no parallel. His control of Fox news, which so successfully supports the Trump presidency, is a key force in American politics. In the UK, his control of The Sun and The Times leaves politicians scrambling to get him onside. But what do we know about the man himself? This book looks closely at the Murdochs, focusing on Rupert's father Keith, who built the family’s media power and cultivated the anti-establishment instincts that his son Rupert is known for. Roberts traces the life of the Murdochs, how Rupert Murdoch’s view of the world was formed, and assesses it's impact on the media that influences our politics today.Trade ReviewTo unpeel the layers of ‘the man who owns the media’, it’s difficult to think of someone more qualified than Tom Roberts ... Here, Roberts again applies his forensic approach and scholarly rigour. * Spear's Magazine *The Making of Murdoch is the essential prequel to one of the great media and succession stories of our time. • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Political Economy of Narcotics

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the origins, history and organisation of the international system of narcotic drug control with a specific focus on heroin, cannabis and cocaine. It argues that the century-long quest to eliminate the production, trade in and use of narcotic drugs has been a profound failure. The statistics produced by the international and domestic narcotic drug control agencies point to a sustained expansion of the drug trade, despite the imposition of harsh criminal sanctions against those engaged, as producers, traffickers or consumers, in the narcotic drugs market. The roots of this major international policy failure are traced back to the outdated ideology of prohibition, which is shown to be counterproductive, utopian and a fundamentally inadequate basis for narcotic drug policy in the twenty-first century. Prohibition, championed by many US policy makers, has left the international community poorly positioned to confront those changes to the drug trade and drug markets that have resulted from globalisation. Moreover, prohibition based approaches are causing more harm than good, as is demonstrated through reference to issues such as HIV/AIDS, the environment, conflict, development and social justice. As the drug control system approaches its centenary, there are signs that the global consensus on narcotic drug prohibition is fracturing. Some European and South American states are pushing for a new approach based on regulation, decriminalisation and harm reduction. But those seeking to revise prohibition strategies faces entrenched resistance, primarily by the U.S. This important text argues that successive American governments have pursued a contradictory approach; acting decisively against the narcotic drug trade at home and abroad, while at the same time working with drug traffickers and producer states when it is in America's strategic interest. As a result, US policy approaches emerge as a decisive factor in accounting for the failure of prohibition.Trade Review'Buxton does a good job of undermining the case for prohibition. Excellent sources and extensive bibliography [in the book] is a credit to her clear analysis. Her style may be a little cool, but this is authoritative, provocative and just the kind of thing Sunday newspapers should be carrying on the news feature pages..' • The Coffee Paradox: Global Markets, Commodity

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Coffee Paradox: Global Markets, Commodity

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCan developing countries trade their way out of poverty? International trade has grown dramatically in the last two decades in the global economy, and trade is an important source of revenue in developing countries. Yet, many low-income countries have been producing and exporting tropical commodities for a long time. They are still poor. This book is a major analytical contribution to understanding commodity production and trade, as well as putting forward policy-relevant suggestions for ‘solving’ the commodity problem. Through the study of the global value chain for coffee, the authors recast the ‘development problem’ for countries relying on commodity exports in entirely new ways. They do so by analysing the so-called coffee paradox – the coexistence of a ‘coffee boom’ in consuming countries and of a ‘coffee crisis’ in producing countries. New consumption patterns have emerged with the growing importance of specialty, fair trade and other ‘sustainable’ coffees. In consuming countries, coffee has become a fashionable drink and coffee bar chains have expanded rapidly. At the same time, international coffee prices have fallen dramatically and producers receive the lowest prices in decades. This book shows that the coffee paradox exists because what farmers sell and what consumers buy are becoming increasingly ‘different’ coffees. It is not material quality that contemporary coffee consumers pay for, but mostly symbolic quality and in-person services. As long as coffee farmers and their organizations do not control at least parts of this ‘immaterial’ production, they will keep receiving low prices. The Coffee Paradox seeks ways out from this situation by addressing some key questions: What kinds of quality attributes are combined in a coffee cup or coffee package? Who is producing these attributes? How can part of these attributes be produced by developing country farmers? To what extent are specialty and sustainable coffees achieving these objectives?Trade Review'An important contribution to the literature on primary products and economic development.' Diego Pizano, National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia 'Daviron and Ponte have done a masterful job both of showing the limits to 'free' trade in agricultural products as well as providing some concrete proposals as to what must be done to promote greater equity. The story of the global coffee trade is an essential lesson for all those concerned about international development. This volume should be read by anyone who is interested in how international trade takes place on the ground as opposed to abstract theorizing about it.' Lawrence Busch, director of the Institute for Food and Agricultural Standards, Michigan State University 'This book uses value chain analysis to go beyond the normal hand-wringing about the coffee crisis. The authors blend theory and practice (including new data) to provide all those interested in coffee with new insights, ideas and perspective.' Peter Baker, senior coffee scientist, CABI Commodities 'Ponte and Daviron bring fresh insights to the persistent difficulties of trade as a lever of development for poor nations. Their well-crafted and historically grounded arguments precisely characterize the important intangible attributes of value and market power that are often overlooked and offer some stimulating perspectives for anyone interested in development and in coffee.' Daniele Giovannucci, consultant and author of The State of Sustainable Coffee 'The Coffee Paradox offers a fascinating account of how our favourite morning cup of coffee travels from poor producer regions in the Global South to relatively affluent consumer regions in the Global North. Analyzing recent transformations in coffee quality specifications and global trade networks, Daviron and Ponte illuminate the challenges and opportunities inherent in tropical export production, global trade, and shifting consumption trends. The book is theoretically sophisticated, empirically grounded, and goes the extra mile to identify promising pathways for fuelling development.' Laura T. Raynolds, co-director of the Center for Fair and Alternative Trade Studies, Colorado State University 'Aimed at academics and researchers, the Coffee Paradox raises interesting questions, using the example of coffee to explore a complex, but important subject.' New Agriculturist '....is an intriguing study..is likely to make an important contribution to the research, debates and initiatives addressing the relationship between commodity trade and development, as well as to the future potential of more equitable North/South relations amidst the rapid changes in production, trade and consumption in the global economy.' Douglas L. Murray, Colorado State University 'Recasts the so-called coffee paradox - the coexistence of a 'coffee boom' in consuming countries and of a 'coffee crisis' in producing countries. Book SynopsisThe Scramble for Africa in the 1880s showed European interest in Africa at its most intense and today evokes a picture of the great European powers engaged in a frantic struggle for supremacy and for control of Africa and its resources. Eve Pollecoff here tells the story of Otto Markus - 'Pioneer Merchant Trader' - who established his East African Trading Company in the wake of growing British interest in East Africa: especially Kenya and Uganda. The influence of Markus's company stretched from East Africa to Europe, and to the USA and Brazil, embracing skins and hides, domestic goods, agricultural produce and the Ford Motor Company agency. The company survived two world wars, waves of anti-Semitism in Europe, and pioneered staple crops for which Africa became famous, especially cotton and coffee. Pollecoff paints an impressive portrait of Otto Markus as a dynamic international entrepreneur, the focus of a large and traditional family, and, above all, the embodiment - perhaps unwittingly - of informal empire.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1 - Beginnings Chapter 2 - The Start of his Career Chapter 3 - And so to Africa Chapter 4 - First Up Country Trip Chapter 5 - First Journeys to Uganda Chapter 6 - Uganda Safaris and Discoveries Chapter 7 - The Trading Start 1904 to 1914 Chapter 8 - Personal Interlude Chapter 9 - Rudl’s 23 Month Congo Journey Chapter 10 - Final Pre 1914 War Developments Chapter 11 - The First World War Chapter 12 - Post War and Peace Chapter 13 - The Second East African Start Chapter 14 - Coffee Chapter 15 - The Inter War Years Chapter 16 - The Final Years Chapter 17 - Conclusion

Davidson, demonstrates in this book how the powerful connections that are being forged by the very eastern and western extremities of the continent are poised to become a central pillar of this process. Most notably, an important new relationship is developing between the six monarchies of the Persian Gulf and the three most industrialized Asian economies. What began as a simple, twentieth century marriage of convenience based on hydrocarbon imports and exports has now evolved into a comprehensive, long-term mutual commitment that will not only continue to capitalize on the Persian Gulf's rich energy resources and Pacific Asia's massive energy needs, but will also seek to develop strong non-hydrocarbon bilateral trade, will facilitate sovereign wealth investments in both directions, and will provide lucrative opportunities for experienced Pacific Asian construction companies, and - in China's case - its vast labour force.Trade Review'This book provides a timely overview of the multifaceted dimensions of the rapidly-developing inter-relationships between the GCC states and South Korea, China and Japan.' * Kristian Ulrichsen, LSE *

Book SynopsisThe twenty-first century will doubtless be that of Asia, which by 2030 will be home to three of the four world's mightiest economies, including India. This stimulating book opens a debate on the question of leadership in Asia for which China and Japan are competing. It assesses the two rivals' strengths and weaknesses as well as the major challenges which they will face in that battle for supremacy. On this basis, it proposes the most probable scenario for the next two decades in the light of the dialectical relationship between economics and strategic power. Without neglecting the strategic aspects which give advantage to China, priority is given to an economic approach, because that is the primary arena in which Asian integration is taking place and the one in which a resilient Japan still maintains firmly its leadership, based on productivity, competitiveness and technological edge.Trade Review'In his provocative and important book Claude Meyer argues against the conventional wisdom that Japan's future is past and that China will necessarily dominate the region. Drawing on his long years of experience with China and Japan as a businessman and scholar, Meyer explains why the next decades in East Asia are going to be dominated by competition between China and Japan for political and economic power. In contrast to so many observers who have written Japan off as a declining power, Meyer puts his focus on Japan's strengths as well as its weaknesses and the likelihood that it will play a central role in shaping the Asia of the future. It should be required reading for anyone interested in the future of the world economy's most important region.' * Professor Gerald Curtis, Columbia University *'A fascinating mixture of authoritative economic and political analysis on an extremely important topic that has not received the attention it deserves. As the author so clearly puts it, everything divides the two countries, be it interpretations of the past, perceptions of the present, or visions of the future. In any, almost inevitable, future confrontation China would seem to have the upper hand, yet Japan cannot be easily dismissed. The country retains considerable strengths, notably financial and technological, but also cultural. What it seemingly lacks nowadays is confidence in itself, a confidence that China, on the other hand, has in abundance.' * Andrea Boltho, Emeritus Fellow, Magdalen College, Oxford University *'A really good book. It is sensible, direct and very readable. Meyer addresses the rise of Japan and now China to become the world's third and second largest economies and major rivals for leadership in East Asia. Theirs is an economically friendly and mutually beneficial relationship which masks inevitable political tensions, exacerbated by the history of their relationship. The author nicely speculates on how they will probably share regional leadership for the next twenty years. Thereafter it will be either a regional cooperative arrangement led by China, Japan and India, or China will be the East Asia hegemony.' * Hugh Patrick, Director, Center on Japanese Economy and Business, and Professor Emeritus, Columbia University *

Book SynopsisIn this book Australian economist, Graham Dunkley, explains and critiques the crucial concept of free trade. A policy of free trade is central to today's world-dominating globalization project. The more euphoric globalists uncritically assume that it has universal and unequivocal benefits for all people and countries. And the perpetual negotiations of the World Trade Organization are wholly based on this presumption. Graham Dunkley shows, however, that leading economists have always been more sceptical about free trade doctrine than the dogmatic globalizers realize. There are more holes in free trade theory than its advocates grasp. And the benefits of free trade in practice are more limited and contingent than they acknowledge. He also argues that the World Bank's long-time push for export-led development is misguided. A more democratic world trading order is necessary and possible. And more interventionist, self-reliant trade policies are feasible, especially if a more holistic view of economic development goals is adopted.Trade Review'An incisive and informative analysis of why free trade derails development, this book serves as an indispensable road map for those seeking to hack their way out of the neoliberal thicket.' Table of ContentsEmpirischer Überblick und theoretische Perspektiven.- Politik und Macht in multinationalen Unternehmen in Schwellenländern.- Nachhaltigkeit und multinationale Unternehmen in Schwellenländern.- Globale Arbeitsbedingungen im Wandel.- Regionale Expansionsstrategien in Europa.- Schlussfolgerungen.
