Book SynopsisChina's rising status in the global economy alongside recent economic stagnation in Europe and the United States has led to considerable speculation that we are in the early stages of a transition in power relations. The authors take readers through possible scenarios for future relations between China and the United States.Trade Review"While there is no shortage of books concerned with US-China relations and the potential for conflict with China's rise, Transition Scenarios is the first to systematically employ a scenario-building or 'forward reasoning' methodology-and it does so carefully and to great effect, advancing a growing literature in the field of international relations." The University of Chicago Press Global Rivalries

Book SynopsisAs the economies of China, India, and other Asian nations continue to grow, these countries are seeking greater control over the rules that govern international trade. By placing the current contest within the historical development of the global capitalist system, this book highlights a fascinating interaction of politics and economics.Trade Review"With Global Rivalries, Amy A. Quark offers a fascinating account of the evolution of standards setting in the international cotton trade, bringing this seemingly technocratic but intensely political process to life without sacrificing careful and erudite scholarship. More importantly, she shows convincingly that these issues matter greatly in an increasingly global marketplace." (Susan K. Sell, George Washington University)"

Book SynopsisIllustrating that product marketing, patent litigation, and even ghostwriting pervaded natural history and medicine - the big sciences of the early modern era, this book argues that the growth of global trade during the Dutch Golden Age gave rise to an entrepreneurial network of transnational science.Trade Review"Money and science have long been connected. Scientific activity needs to be paid for, but at times it can also turn into a nice little earner. As science became more materialistic, one of the most important tools for investigation became the ability to picture phenomena. In excavating how that happened in the early stages of the Scientific Revolution, in one of the most commercialized regions of Europe, Margocsy's book makes a major contribution to the histories of science and of art." The University of Chicago Press Social Security Programs and Retirement around t

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisIn developed countries, men's labor force participation at older ages has increased in recent years, reversing a decades-long pattern of decline. Participation rates for older women have also been rising. What explains these patterns, and the differences in them across countries? The answers to these questions are pivotal as countries face fiscal and retirement security challenges posed by longer life-spans. This eighth phase of the International Social Security project, which compares the social security and retirement experiences of twelve developed countries, documents trends in participation and employment and explores reasons for the rising participation rates of older workers. The chapters use a common template for analysis, which facilitates comparison of results across countries. Using within-country natural experiments and cross-country comparisons, the researchers study the impact of improving health and education, changes in the occupation mix, the retirement incentives of social security programs, and the emergence of women in the workplace, on labor markets. The findings suggest that social security reforms and other factors such as the movement of women into the labor force have played an important role in labor force participation trends.

It provides a comprehensive conceptual overview of three crucial aspects of global sourcing - strategy, governance, and daily management - supplemented by well-researched case study and lively examples.' - Professor Natalia Levina, NYU Stern School of Business 'In a truly globalized world, customers are looking not just at delivery excellence from service providers, but also global execution capabilities. Outsourcing providers need to look beyond standardized services to include innovation and transformation capabilities, embedded into their offering. This requires providers to focus on the customer's business, understand the issues and then provide solutions. This book provides a very good customer-centric view of how providers need to approach the market.' - Girish Ramachandran, President - Global Head - Strategic Business and Head: Middle East and Africa. 'Outsourcing and offshoring are commonplace terms, but they're often poorly understood and inexpertly practiced. Yet there is much 'out' left in 'sourcing,' and even more 'off' ahead of us in 'shoring.' The Handbook of Global Outsourcing and Offshoring is an intelligent user's manual essential reading for those starting out as well as those who find they may have strayed off course.' - Dr. John Hindle, Senior Manager, Global Marketing, Accenture 'Out of sight but not out of mind' could well be the motto of this book. It is a 'must read' for those studying the global phenomenon and in managing outsourcing relationships. The frustrations and rising costs experienced by many can and need to be avoided. The Handbook of Global Outsourcing and Offshoring goes a long way in providing insights drawn from real-world experience in reducing the risks.' - Professor Robert D. Galliers, Bentley College. 'Sourcing optimization is a key strategic lever being deployed by global corporations as they adapt to the challenging business and economic climate. Sourcing practitioners will find this book a useful guide in terms of avoiding the common pitfalls that impact the success of such initiatives. The examples used in the book are free of jargon, drawn from real-life situations and easy to relate to.' - Srikanth Iyengar, Associate Vice President, Global Head of Business Development - SGS, Infosys Technologies Limited 'The Handbook of Global Outsourcing and Offshoring is outstanding. It is both insightful and practical. It is useful for companies that are considering outsourcing as a growth strategy as well as those that set out to provide high quality outsourcing services to its clients globally.' - John Peng, Executive Vice President, Head of GADS Business Group, iSoftStone Information Service Corp 'The Handbook of Global Outsourcing and Offshoring provides a broad and in-depth understanding of outsourcing from the client perspective. From the early days of outsourcing, client and provider companies alike have made innumerable mistakes. This handbook provides valuable guidance about what it takes to avoid the pitfalls and outsource successfully. This should be a required reference for any company considering outsourcing.' - Wendell O. 7 in stock

Book SynopsisAn expansive analysis of investing triumphs and failures, with a discussion of what investing will (and should) look like in the future.Trade ReviewA tour de force look at investment from previously unseen perspectives. -- Barry Ritholtz, columnist for Bloomberg View and the Washington Post This important, well-written, and engaging book covers 4,000 years of investing history with an emphasis on the last fifty years, where so much has been happening. Full of insights, interesting people, and enduring wisdom. -- Charley Ellis, author of What It Takes and Winning the Loser's Game Norton Reamer and Jesse Downing have delivered a truly impressive history of investments and the investment-management business, starting from its earliest origins in the ancient world to its most recent and innovative forms, for example, the hedge funds, private-equity pools, and other forms of alternative investments in the twenty-first century. It is not only a complete history but a well-organized and analytical one, built with continual reference to the important principles of business and investing. -- Jay Light, dean emeritus, Harvard Business School For most of recorded history few people had wealth, and there were few options for investing it. Reamer and Downing show how that changed dramatically over the past two to three centuries. Today the vast middle classes of developed countries have joined the rich in having massive amounts of wealth to invest. Asset classes available to investors have proliferated, as have professional investment managers. This well-researched book is at once a welcome addition to the literature of financial history and a guide to navigating the complex world of modern investment. -- Richard Sylla, New York University Stern School of Business An easy-to-read primer on stock market investment, traced back from today to Greek and Roman times so that we may understand how we arrived at the present system of investment management and investment products. -- Janette Rutterford, Open University and University of York The substance is priceless, the chronology first-rate, and the writing style impeccable. I didn't expect to read it with such care, but Reamer and Downing drew me into their net and captured me. A splendid book that will be part of serious research on finance and mutual funds for decades to come, maybe even longer. -- John C. Bogle, founder of Vanguard A reader's time and energy devoted to it are likely to yield competitive returns. Institutional Investor Worthy and useful. Financial History [Reamer and Downing] are right that the democratization of investment is, on the whole, good news. The Economist The merit of this book is that it helps us reflect on the essential role that investment plays in human enterprise. It encourages the reader to think of investment as providing a mechanism for economic and social change. Economic History Review [Investment: A History's] value lies in providing a historical context for today's investment landscape. And it does that in a remarkably interesting way. Book SynopsisJapan's New Regional Reality offers a comprehensive analysis of Japan's geoeconomic strategy that reveals the country's role in shaping regional economic order in the Asia-Pacific. Saori N. Katada explains Japanese foreign economic policy in light of both international and domestic dynamics.Trade ReviewThis book provides a much-needed analysis of changes in Japan’s regional economic strategy. In giving agency to the Japanese state, Katada makes a major contribution to our understanding not just of contemporary Japan, but of the region as a whole and the potential shape of the world order to come. -- Saadia Pekkanen, editor of Asian Designs: Governance in the Contemporary World OrderAt a time when the future of Asia is narrowly seen through the prism of U.S.-China great power competition, Katada persuasively demonstrates that Japan’s quiet transformation—less mercantilist, more champion of liberalism—will shape the regional order. Her command of the nuanced evolution of Japan’s foreign economic policy across diverse tracks—trade and investment, finance, and development aid—is unparalleled. Essential reading for anyone interested in Asian geoeconomics. -- Mireya Solís, author of Dilemmas of a Trading Nation: Japan and the United States in the Evolving Asia-Pacific OrderThis important book provides a convincing account of the remarkable shift by Japan to lead regional initiatives for liberal economic policy. Katada melds theory and empirical tests to explain how state-led liberalism arose to replace mercantilist industrial policies with a new era of Japanese foreign economic policy. Looking inside domestic decision-making processes and reflecting on the challenge of China’s growing strength, the book offers a comprehensive synthesis. -- Christina L. Book SynopsisJohannes Urpelainen provides an expert guide to India’s energy and environmental issues that incorporates both domestic and global perspectives. He details how unequal economic development and rapid population growth have brought the country to its current state.Trade ReviewUrpelainen provides a social and historical context for the development of India’s environment and energy policy since independence. Not many books do this in an approachable manner, and hence Energy and Environment in India is a welcome intervention. The book convincingly makes the case that meeting India’s growing energy needs sustainably is central to maintaining the global carbon budget. -- Kaushik Deb, Columbia UniversityUrpelainen’s analysis addresses two of 21st century India’s most entrenched, interrelated policy and political challenges: expanding energy access while also protecting a fragile environment. The volume, which deftly situates these problems within their complex social, political, and historical settings, will be equally valuable for researchers, students, and policymakers. -- Sunila S. Kale, University of WashingtonThe book convincingly argues that to produce fair, equitable, and sustainable outcomes for almost two billion Indians, the country must strive for a sustainable future through democratic norms. It’s a great reference book to understand India’s domestic issues and its role in the global energy and environment politics. * The Hindu *An excellent model through which we might argue for the utility of history in environment and energy policy. * H-Environment *Table of ContentsIntroduction1. • NAFTA and Labor in North America

University of Illinois Press NAFTA and Labor in North America

Book Synopsis As companies increasingly look to the global market for capital, cheaper commodities and labor, and lower production costs, the impact on Mexican and American workers and labor unions is significant. National boundaries and the laws of governments that regulate social relations between laborers and management are less relevant in the era of globalization, rendering ineffective the traditional union strategies of pressuring the state for reform. Focusing especially on the effects of the North American Free Trade Agreement and the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (the first international labor agreement linked to an international trade agreement), Norman Caulfield notes the waning political influence of trade unions and their disunity and divergence on crucial issues such as labor migration and workers'' rights. Comparing the labor movement''s fortunes in the 1970s with its current weakened condition, Caulfield notes the parallel decline in the United States'' Trade ReviewReceived the Harvey Johnson Best Book Award from the Southwest Council on Latin American Studies (SCOLAS), 2011. Book SynopsisHow do we measure and truly grasp the sweeping social and environmental effects of an oil-based economy? Focusing on the special economic zones resulting from China's trading partnership with Nigeria, Enclaves of Exception offers a new approach to exploring the relationship between oil and technologies of extraction and their interrelatedness to local livelihoods and environmental practices. In this groundbreaking work, Omolade Adunbi argues that even though the exploitation of oil resources is dominated by big corporations, it establishes opportunities for many former Nigerian insurgents and their local communities to contest the ownership of such resources in the oil-rich Niger Delta and to extract oil themselves and sell it. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, Enclaves of Exception makes clear that, although both the free trade zones and the now booming local artisanal refineries share the goals of profit-making and are enthusiastically supported by those benefiting from thTrade Review"An exceptional comparative ethnography! • Rooted Globalism

    Indiana University Press Rooted Globalism

Book SynopsisDoes the concept of nationality apply to the economic elite, or have they shed national identities to form a global capitalist class? In Rooted Globalism, Kevin Funk unpacks dozens of ethnographic interviews he conducted with Latin America's urban-based, Arab-descendant elite class, some of whom also occupy positions of political power in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. Based on extensive fieldwork, Funk illuminates how these elites navigate their Arab ancestry, Latin American host cultures, and roles as protagonists of globalization. With the term rooted globalism, Funk captures the emergence of classed intersectional identities that are simultaneously local, national, transnational, and global. Focusing on an oft-ignored axis of South-South relations (between Latin America and the Arab world), Rooted Globalism provides detailed analysis of the identities, worldviews, and motivations of this group and ultimately reveals that rather than obliterating national identities,Trade ReviewKevin Funk's Rooted Globalism challenges the ubiquitous claim that leading capitalists have mentally divorced themselves from the nation-state as they congeal into a placeless hegemonic class with a global consciousness. Funk interviewed dozens of leading capitalists in South America and finds that the identities of these global actors intersect with ethnicity, race, family and ancestral ties, migration histories, nationality, and geography to generate an empirical class consciousness that he calls "rooted globalism." Funk concludes that the borderless one-world theme articulated by transnational corporations and corporate elites is more of a political strategy to intimidate state elites than an accurate representation of their empirical class consciousness. This pathbreaking book will interest scholars in Latin American politics and political economy, but it is a must read for anyone interested in the relationship between globalization, class formation, and the state. -- Clyde W. Barrow, author of The Dangerous Class, University of Texas Rio Grande ValleyHas the ruling class of today's global capitalist system really gone global? Do they share a global worldview or consciousness? Critically probing such crucial questions to understanding our contemporary capitalist dystopia, Rooted Globalism obliterates long-held arguments regarding the existence of a nationless capitalist class imbued with a common global identity. In examining what capitalists actually think and say, the book deftly melds fine-grained empirical research with theoretical rigor in new and innovative ways. -- Alexander Anievas, author of Capital, the State, and War, University of ConnecticutCritics of neoliberal capitalism often make a common mistake: imagining elites as global actors, who also understand themselves as such. Rooted Globalism—rich in theoretical insight and drawn from detailed interviews of Latin American elites—destabilizes this assumption. Kevin Funk demonstrates that the lived worlds of elites are not simply extensions of "global" capitalism's material logics. Instead, capitalism is always cultural, elites are rooted in places and states, and capitalism is far from coherently hegemonic. -- Isaac Kamola, author of Making the World Global: US Universities and the Production of the Global Imaginary, Trinity CollegeThe intricacies of class formation in Latin America have been the object of a long tradition of critical scholarship, which tends to focus on the legacies of slavery, indigenous genocide, colonialism, and the weakness of national ruling classes. Kevin Funk brings a breath of fresh air to the field with this very original book about the "rooted globalism" of Arab-Latin American elites. Beyond presenting a wealth of new empirical research on a hitherto relatively neglected social group, the book makes a distinctive theoretical contribution to transnational class studies, challenging commonly held beliefs about the lack of local and cultural roots of transnational elites. -- Felipe Antunes de Oliveira, Queen Mary University of LondonRooted Globalism offers an incisive intervention to grasp the complex identity of the international upper class under neoliberal capitalism in the twenty-first century, evinced by unprecedented inequality. In this book Kevin Funk offers an original account of the converging and diverging forces comprising the world's capitalist class. This book uncovers the nature of the global capitalist class and the deepening global divide which threatens humanity. -- Immanuel Ness, author of Organizing Insurgency, City University of New YorkRooted Globalism traces the complicated political entanglements and economic ambitions of a Latin American elite of Arab origin. Relying on direct access to key protagonists, Funk's analysis of these South-South business linkages is nuanced, theoretically sophisticated and empirically rich. A key contribution to studies of the networked global capitalist class, Funk's book is also a must read for anyone with interest in the evolution of Latin American-Middle East relations, South-South linkages, and international political economy more broadly. -- Omar Dahi, coauthor of South–South Trade and Finance in the Twenty-First Century, Hampshire CollegeTable of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroduction: Capitalism and Class in Global Latin America1. Book SynopsisThe Year of the Euro examines the wide-ranging importance of Europe's new single currency beyond its impact on financial markets and the economy itself. On January 1, 2002, when the new currency began to circulate in the twelve participating member states of the European Union, the long move toward a supranational European framework for trade and institutions finally entered the fabric of daily life for hundreds of millions of citizens. The contributing authors to this highly readable and interdisciplinary volume offer a variety of perspectives on this extraordinary episode in currency change and European convergence. The book's essays offer the assessments of leading scholars of European affairsfrom the fields of history, political science, sociology, and lawas to whether the new common currency will reshape the continent's cultures, societies and political systems and, if so, in what ways. The discussions and debates found in these pages will inform those, within and outsidTrade Review"This collection should be of interest to all those concerned with the viability and implications of the euro changeover, as well as with the broader theoretical issues posed by this extraordinary historical experience. The book is intended to contribute to existing scholarship and to encourage future academic work, but it is also designed to be fully accessible and broadly informative for readers outside conventional academic circles who are interested in Europe's experience with currency union." —Abstracts of Public Administration, Development and Environment "The euro has quickly become a world currency, and this excellent work explains how this came about. It does the job, not only by looking at the economic factors involved, but also at political, legal, social, and cultural factors—all in a very creative and readable manner." —Richard Swedberg, Cornell University"If the nineteenth and twentieth centuries brought a dramatic nationalization of government-backed currencies across the world, does the euro's introduction in 2002 write finis to the era of nationalism? Here, superbly informed observers of European politics, economy, and social life debate that question from multiple perspectives, not only documenting the depth of the euro's challenge, but also mapping alternative futures for Europe. An illuminating intervention in a vital conversation." —Viviana A. Its emphasis on the likely social and cultural—not just political and economic—impact of the euro at the national, subnational, and supranational levels is timely and refreshing. Book SynopsisIn Power and Regionalism in Latin America: The Politics of MERCOSUR, Laura Gómez-Mera examines the erratic patterns of regional economic cooperation in the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), a political-economic agreement among Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and, recently, Venezuela that comprises the world's fourth-largest regional trade bloc. Despite a promising start in the early 1990s, MERCOSUR has had a tumultuous and conflict-ridden history. Yet it has survived, expanding in membership and institutional scope. What explains its survival, given a seemingly contradictory mix of conflict and cooperation? Through detailed empirical analyses of several key trade disputes between the bloc's two main partners, Argentina and Brazil, Gómez-Mera proposes an explanation that emphasizes the tension between and interplay of two sets of factors: power asymmetries within and beyond the region, and domestic-level politics. Member states share a common interest in preserviTrade Review"Gómez-Mera offers an extremely valuable contribution to our understanding of why the globe is fragmenting into regional blocs—and the implications for the future of international relations theory and practice. By masterfully integrating domestic interest groups and institutions, she brings life to the formation of foreign policy. Equally valuable are the bright lights she shines on the dangerously underdeveloped study of Brazilian foreign policy and interests." —Richard Feinberg, University of California, San Diego"This study provides a theoretically sophisticated and empirically rich analysis of the complex links between regional cooperation and inequalities of power. Its carefully researched re-construction of the patterns of conflict and cooperation within MERCOSUR represents a valuable addition to our understanding of regional dynamics within South America and their connection with domestic politics. It also significantly advances the debate on a crucial broader question in the study of contemporary global politics and political economy: the relationship between regionalism and a world of emerging regional powers." —Andrew Hurrell, University of Oxford"In a very engaging and accessible manner, Laura Gómez-Mera has successfully applied the standing theories of international relations to the case of MERCOSUR. She has woven together international/systemic and domestic theories as these pertain to the role and interaction of Brazil and Argentina, the two main middle powers in MERCOSUR. Through this analysis of regional integration and interstate conflict and cooperation, Gómez-Mera thoroughly covers all the necessary methodological bases while also bringing her subject to life. The sectoral case studies she provides reflect a tremendous amount of original fieldwork; those, combined with a sophisticated conceptual framework, comprise a valuable contribution to the field." —Carol Wise, University of Southern California“Power and Regionalism in Latin America uses a sophisticated model to explain the apparently erratic pattern of conflict and cooperation in Mercosur. Gomez Mera’s contribution is unique in that she creatively combines IR theory with the International Political Economy literature on regionalism and regional trade agreements. The result is a path-breaking study that sheds light on the specificity of regionalism in South America.” —Mario E. Carranza, Texas A&M University-Kingsville"A careful theoretical scheme includes domestic, bureaucratic, and external bloc forces to explain the evolution of this [MERCOSUR] regional integration bloc. . . . The multidimensional theoretical approach does clearly get at the complexity of the MERCOSUR case, in which domestic actors are influential but the state, albeit often divided, remains central in responding to domestic and international pressures." —Choice“This is a solid book explaining the apparently erratic pattern of conflict and cooperation in the South American integration bloc, MERCOSUR. A careful theoretical scheme includes domestic, bureaucratic, and external bloc forces to explain the evolution of this regional integration bloc . . . [while] adding specificity to the interaction between regionalism and globalization in a developing region.” —Choice“Power and Regionalism in Latin America adds depth and breadth to scholarly reflections on Mercosur and more widely on the drivers of regional cooperation. It carefully distinguishes between survival and success of integration. The interplay of systemic forces, especially regional power configurations, and domestic interests, especially state agencies’ preferences, will determine whether Mercosur will be a case of one or the other. For now, Gomez-Mera provides a convincing explanation of what is perhaps the only consistency in Mercosur’s trajectory: its inconsistency.” —Bulletin of Latin American Research

Book SynopsisAn authority on Asia and globalization identifies the challenges China’s growing power poses and how it must be confrontedTrade Review"Timely and thought-provoking...refreshing... Prestowitz provides an unsparing analysis of how Washington's elite fell into the grip of their China delusion."—James Kynge, Financial Times“A much needed counterpoint to the air of complacency that surrounds much writing about China. Prestowitz's suggestions about what measures America and other countries should now take are worth the price of the book alone.”—Matthew Partridge, Money Week ‘Book of the Week’“Proposes a lengthy list of new measures and institutions designed to restore the United States to economic independence and predominance”—Niall Ferguson, Times Literary Supplement “Raises such thought provoking questions with a sense of urgency, provides a novel and fair comparative analysis and suggests possible proactive measures to protect western allies’ interests. This book is a welcome clarion call for western nation states to consider the most productive, constructive ways in which they might coexist with a rising China...It deserves a wide audience.”—Christopher Ruane, Asian Affairs"Clyde Prestowitz presents the most comprehensive and practical plan yet to meet the Chinese Communist Party’s grave challenge to the United States."—Dennis Blair, former Director of National Intelligence"In The World Turned Upside Down, Clyde Prestowitz, who led the way in describing how a country like Japan can skew the world trading system, powerfully addresses the biggest problem of all: China. A perfect match of author and subject."—James Mann, author of The China Fantasy“How did America and other advanced democracies find themselves increasingly beholden to the Chinese Communist Party? Seasoned Asia hand Clyde Prestowitz’ wide-ranging exposé unpacks the long road to this current disturbing reality, while offering a sober and sensible blueprint for pushing back against the PRC’s malign activities in the US and around the world.”—David Shambaugh, author of Where Great Powers Meet: America & China in Southeast Asia"This book lucidly describes the economic and diplomatic misconceptions that have shaped our China policy. It then lays out many ways that we can act to prevent Chinese hegemony."—Ralph Gomory, President Emeritus, Sloan Foundation, former Chief Scientist, IBM“Many books have described what China is, where it is going and where it comes from. What makes this book unique is Prestowitz’s detailed prescription for how the US should change to face China. Every political, academic and business leader who cares about democracy and the free world should read this book and follow its advice. “—Alberto Forchielli, Chairman and CEO of Mandarin Capital
