John Wiley and Sons Ltd Love and Communication
Book SynopsisLove and Communication is an intriguing philosophical and religious inquiry into the meaning of “talk” – and ultimately the meaning of “being human.” Taking an historical approach, Paddy Scannell argues that the fundamental media of communication are (and always have been) talk and writing. Far from being made redundant by twentieth-century new media (radio and television), these old media laid the foundation for today’s technologies (AI and algorithms, for instance). Emphasizing these linkages, Scannell makes the case for recognizing what a religious sensibility might reveal about these technologies and the fundamental differences between a humanmade world and a world that is beyond our grasp. Drawing on the pioneering work of John Durham Peters, the book proposes that communication and love go together, which can be understood in two ways: as a human accomplishment, or a divine gift. Ultimately, the essential conundrum of today is highlighted: do we wish to remain in a human> This book draws on a lifetime of academic work and the author’s personal experience. It will be of interest to scholars and students of media and communication, who will welcome this highly original and searching examination of love as communication.Trade Review“Love and Communication marks yet another chapter in Paddy Scannell’s searching and brilliant investigations of media, communication, and everyday life. Working through ideas about language and talk, Scannell provides a fascinating account of what restores our trust in the goodness of daily, everyday life: faith, hope, and love. For a new generation of media scholars grappling with a digital world on edge, this book is an indispensable guide.”Aswin Punathambekar, University of Virginia “This rare and special book is the synthesis of a career considering the most fundamental issues of communication. It brings together talk and communication, language and writing, radio and television, along with three worlds: God’s world of yesterday, the human world of today, and the machine world of tomorrow.”John Durham Peters, Yale University“Paddy Scannell’s new thought-provoking book is a sort of intellectual and scholarly testament...this profound study is a great deal more than merely a summary of a prominent communications scholar’s research and reflections. He also feels forced to explore hitherto largely ignored territory.”VoegelinViewTable of ContentsIntroductionPart OneTalk and communicationWriting and languageChapter One The Still Face ExperimentChapter Two Talk and writingChapter Three The wonder of the world Part TwoMiraclesChapter Four Heidegger’s teacupChapter Five MiraclesChapter Six Love and communicationReferences

Book SynopsisThe AI revolution can seem powerful and unstoppable, extracting data from every aspect of our lives and subjecting us to unprecedented surveillance and control. But at ground level, even the most advanced ‘smart’ technologies are not as all-powerful as either the tech companies or their critics would have us believe. From gig worker activism to wellness tracking with sex toys and TikTokers' manipulation of the algorithm, this book shows how ordinary people are negotiating the datafication of society. The book establishes a new theoretical framework for understanding everyday experiences of data and automation, and offers guidance on the ethical responsibilities we share as we learn to live together with data-driven machines.Everyday Data Cultures is essential reading for students and researchers in digital media and communication, as well as for anyone interested in the role of data and AI in society.Trade Review"This is a great book. John Wiley and Sons Ltd Perfect: Feeling Judged on Social Media
Book SynopsisSocial media is replete with images of 'perfection'. But many are unrealistic and contribute to a pervasive sense of never being good enough: not thin enough; not pretty enough; not cool enough. Try too hard and you risk being condemned for being ‘attention-seeking’, don't try hard enough and you're slacking. Rosalind Gill challenges polarized perspectives that see young women as either passive victims of social media or as savvy digital natives. She argues the real picture is far more ambivalent. Getting likes and followers and feeling connected to friends feels fantastic, but posting material and worrying about 'haters' causes significant anxieties. Gill uses young women's own words to show how they feel watched all the time; worry about getting things wrong; and struggle to live up to an ideal of being 'perfect' yet at the same time ‘real’. It's the wake-up call we all need.Trade Review‘Perfect is a brilliant, urgent book; Gill expertly details the profound ambivalence that young women feel about interacting on social media. Through in-depth interviews and robust theoretical analysis, Gill guides us in navigating the complex and contradictory affective practices of young people and social media, from inspiration and security to loneliness and despair. Importantly, Gill resists discourses of moral panics and narcissism when analyzing young women on social media, and instead insists that these practices are about “what it means to be human” in this world. A must-read for anyone working in feminist media studies!’Sarah Banet-Weiser, co-author of Believability: Sexual Violence, Media, and the Politics of Doubt‘A really useful, sometimes troubling, report of life from where it is lived by so many today. Disturbing and affecting.’Susie Orbach, psychotherapist, writer, activist & social critic ‘...a great resource for delving into issues that 18-30-year-old women are facing in daily life, or as an informative read on how social media creates a need to appear perfect’.The Journal of Social Media in SocietyTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Preface Introduction: Perfect: Feeling judged on social media Chapter 1: Life on my phone Chapter 2: Picture perfect: The power of images Chapter 3: The beauty industry on my phone Chapter 4: Being watched, judged and harassed Chapter 5: The work of being social Chapter 6: Fear of getting it wrong Conclusion: Feeling judged Notes References

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Pandemic Surveillance
Book SynopsisThe COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted life as we knew it. Lockdowns, self-isolation and quarantine have become a normal part of everyday life. Pandemic surveillance allows governments and corporations to monitor and surveil the spread of the virus and to make sure citizens follow the measures they put in place. This is evident in the massive, unprecedented mobilization of public health data to contain and combat the virus, and the ballooning of surveillance technologies such as contact-tracing apps, facial recognition, and population tracking. This can also be seen as a pandemic of surveillance. In this timely book, David Lyon tracks the development of these methods, examining different forms of pandemic surveillance, in health-related and other areas, from countries around the world. He explores their benefits and disadvantages, their legal status, and how they relate to privacy protection, an ethics of care, and data justice. Questioning whether this new culture of surveillance will become a permanent feature of post-pandemic societies and the long-term negative effects this might have on social inequalities and human freedoms, Pandemic Surveillance highlights the magnitude of COVID-19-related surveillance expansion. The book also underscores the urgent need for new policies relating to surveillance and data justice in the twenty-first century.Trade Review"Since future pandemics will undoubtedly occur, it is essential that we establish trustworthy institutions to conduct public health surveillance. Hopefully Lyon’s insights will help shape the hard conversations that lie ahead...By integrating some of the core insights from privacy theory, data justice, and care ethics, he creates a novel conceptual toolkit that’s a solid theoretical starting point for critically analyzing pandemic surveillance."Evan Selinger, LA Review of Books"This is a timely contribution that highlights the global amplification of surveillance in the pandemic age and recognises its likely long-term consequences."LSE Review of Books "Pandemic Surveillance provides a much-needed overview of how the surveillance landscape has evolved and a synoptic vantage point from which to guide further analysis...it is a timely intervention, setting out key issues and raising important warnings about the pandemic’s surveillance legacy."Surveillance & Society journal“David Lyon, in his excellent new book, 'Pandemic Surveillance,' might say that public health surveillance, despite its temporary pandemic utility, is here to stay. … Although 'Pandemic Surveillance' leaves the reader wanting more detail about how to fix a nuanced, complex, multifaceted problem addressed in the majority of the book, Lyon offers us the intellectual scaffolding to consider how fear can lead to the erosion of important human interests.”Lawfare“Pandemic Surveillance is well-written, has clear prose, and is well structured. It will surely resonate with those who have experienced COVID-19. That is, almost everyone. … All in all, this reader found Pandemic Surveillance well worth the read and then some. It is an important book, teasing out several ethical and moral dilemmas and issues.”National Library of MedicineTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Chapter 1: Defining Moments Chapter 2: Disease-Driven Surveillance Chapter 3: Domestic Targets Chapter 4: Data Sees All? John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Internet of Animals: Human-Animal
Book Synopsis'The internet is made of cats' is a half-jokingly made claim. Today, animals of all shapes and sizes inhabit our digital spaces, including companion animals, wildlife, feral animals and livestock. In this book, Deborah Lupton explores how digital technologies and datafication are changing our relationships with other animals. Playfully building on the concept of 'The Internet of Things', she discusses the complex feelings that have developed between people and animals through the use of digital devices, from social media to employing animal-like robots as companions and carers. The book brings together a range of perspectives, including those of sociology, cultural geography, environmental humanities, critical animal studies and internet studies, to consider how these new digital technologies are contributing to major changes in human–animal relationships at both the micropolitical and macropolitical levels. As Lupton shows, while digital devices and media have strengthened people's relationships to other creatures, these technologies can also objectify animals as things for human entertainment, therapy or economic exploitation. This original and engaging book will be of interest to scholars and students across the social sciences and humanities.Trade Review‘Deborah Lupton is a brilliant guide to animal–human–digital assemblages.’Bill Adams, University of Cambridge‘Lupton takes us on a fascinating journey into the past and the future to help us grapple with our intimate relations with animals. John Wiley and Sons Ltd Digital Timescapes: Technology, Temporality and
Book SynopsisDigital technologies are having a profound effect on the temporalities of individuals, households and organisations. We now expect to be able to instantly source a vast array of information at any time and from anywhere, as well as buy goods with the click of a button and have them delivered within hours, while time management apps and locative media have altered how everyday scheduling and mobility unfolds.Digital Timescapes makes the case that we have transitioned to an era where the production and experience of time is qualitatively different to the pre-digital era. Rob Kitchin provides a synoptic account of this transition, charting how digital technologies, in a wide range of manifestations, are reconfiguring everyday temporalities. Attention is focused on the temporalities associated with six sets of everyday practices: history and memory; politics and policy; governance and governmentality; mobility and logistics; planning and development; and work and labour. Critically, how to challenge and reorder digitally mediated temporal power is examined through the development of an ethics of temporal care and temporal justice.Conceptually and empirically rich, Digital Timescapes is an essential guide to our new temporal regime. It will be of interest to students and scholars of Media Studies, Science and Technology Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Human Geography, and History and Memory Studies, as well as those who are interested in how digital technologies are transforming society.Trade Review"A book rich with insights on the inexorable relationship between time, technology and power. Kitchin maps the unevenness of time in digital culture while he also reveals the inequitable unevenness, and a possible way out, of the types of time that continue to dominate the study of time."—Sarah Sharma, University of Toronto "A much-needed book that updates and rethinks the time-technology nexus. John Wiley and Sons Ltd Technocolonialism
Book SynopsisWith over 300 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, and with emergencies and climate disasters becoming more common, AI and big data are being championed as forces for good and as solutions to the complex challenges of the aid sector. This book argues, however, that digital innovation engenders new forms of violence and entrenches power asymmetries between the global South and North. Madianou develops a new concept, technocolonialism, to capture how the convergence of digital developments with humanitarian structures, state power and market forces reinvigorates and reshapes colonial legacies. The concept of technocolonialism shifts the attention to the constitutive role that digital infrastructures, data and AI play in accentuating inequities between aid providers and people in need. Drawing on ten years of research on the uses of digital technologies in humanitarian operations, the book examines a range of practices: from the normalization of biometric technologies and the datafication of humanitarian operations to experimentation in refugee camps, which are treated as laboratories for technological pilots. In so doing, the book opens new ground in the fields of humanitarianism and critical AI studies, and in the debates in postcolonial studies, by highlighting the fundamental role of digital technologies in reworking colonial genealogies.

Kent State University Press So Much More Than a Headache: Understanding
Book Synopsis"English," wrote Virginia Woolf, "which can express the thoughts of Hamlet and the tragedy of Lear, has no words for the shiver and the headache. . . . let a sufferer try to describe a pain in his head to a doctor and language at once runs dry."Despite Woolf's astute observation and the apparent dearth of writings on such subjects, editor Kathleen O'Shea has managed to gather a wide selection of helpful excerpts, chapters, poetry, and even a short play in this anthology—all with a view toward increasing our understanding and ending the stigma attached to migraines and migraine sufferers. Unlike clinical materials, this anthology addresses the feelings and symptoms that the writers have experienced, sometimes daily. These pieces speak freely about the loneliness and helplessness one feels when a migraine comes on. The sufferer faces nausea, pain, sensitivity to light, and having the veracity of all these symptoms doubted by others. O'Shea, a professor of literature and a migraine sufferer herself, also includes an original essay of her own reflections.Offered as an alternative not only to medical writing but also to self-help books and internet blogs, So Much More Than a Headache addresses a real omission in the available works on migraine, provides a resource for those who may have underestimated the depth and range of writing on this subject, and challenges the cultural bias that dismisses migraine as "just a headache."Trade ReviewWhile there are many consumer health guides on migraines, O'Shea's book is unique in that it compiles selections from essays, novels, and short stories, written by well-known authors (many also migraineurs) such as Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Joan Didion, Oliver Sachs, and others lesser known, arranged around basic themes: what it feels like, what people don't see, and how to describe the indescribable. VERDICT:A valuable resource to help migraineurs see their sufferings put into words and to help friends and family, bosses and co-workers, and physicians gain more empathy and understanding." - Library Journal

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Handbook of Transdisciplinarity: Global
Book SynopsisThis expansive Handbook guides readers through a multi-layered landscape of the interpretations and uses of transdisciplinary thinking and practices worldwide. It advances understanding of the strengths and limits of transdisciplinary research in the context of societal power relations, institutional structures and social inequalities.Original chapters from 116 scholars and experts in 27 countries create a multi-cultural constellation of conceptual and methodological approaches to transdisciplinary research, teaching, training and community projects, showcasing the diversity and plurality of transdisciplinary contributions. Framed through the core themes of thinking, doing and being, this Handbook thoroughly reviews key topics including philosophies and theories, research and practice, education and training and financial and institutional resources with examples from innovative transdisciplinary global projects.Inclusive in its approach, this Handbook will be an ideal resource for public and private domain professionals wishing to explore collaborative working practices. Scholars looking for a better understanding of transdisciplinarity and how it differs from interdisciplinarity will find the case studies illustrative and informative.Trade Review‘An indispensable Handbook on transdisciplinarity that unifies conceptual, pedagogic and practical contributions from over 100 authors across five continents. Transdisciplinarity is a global approach to complexity that progresses “between”, “through” and “beyond” individual disciplines. It is an obligatory yet challenging process, helping us to understand the (unstable) current world and to generate novel transformative propositions.’ -- Philippe Moreillon, University of Lausanne, Switzerland and President of SCNAT‘This pragmatic, accessible and comprehensive reflection on global applications of a transdisciplinary approach is a welcome contribution to the debate and demonstrates that transdisciplinarity has become an intellectual field of its own. The various contributors discuss the epistemological, philosophical and theories that underpin transdisciplinarity and demonstrate the way in which the diversity, coexistence and plurality in different geographical and cultural contexts use transdisciplinarity in creative and meaningful ways. This Handbook is a valuable resource for all researchers and institutions in their efforts to link knowledge with practice and bring about transformation through dynamic acts of transgression.’ -- Heide Hackmann, University of Pretoria, South AfricaTable of ContentsContents: Foreword xxix Alfonso Montuori Acknowledgements xxxix Roderick J. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Transdisciplinarity
Book SynopsisThis contributed volume book aims at discussing transdisciplinary approaches to address common problems. By working transdisciplinarily, researchers coming from different disciplines can work jointly using a shared conceptual framework bringing together disciplinary-specific theories and concepts. There are numerous barriers that can obstruct effective communication between different cultures, communities, religions and geographies. This book shows that through bringing together different disciplines, researchers not only can surpass these barriers but can effectively produce new venues of thought that can positively affect the development and evolution of research and education. The book discusses new and emerging applications of knowledge produced by transdisciplinary efforts and covers the interplay of many disciplines, including agriculture, economics, mathematics, engineering, industry, information technology, marketing, nanoscience, neuroscience, space exploration, human-animal relationships, among others. Consequently, it also covers the relationship between art and science, as one of the most remarkable transdisciplinary approaches that paves the way for new methods in engineering, design, architecture and many other fields.Table of Contents

Springer Advanced Surface Coatings: a Handbook of Surface Engineering
Book SynopsisThe past decade has seen a rapid development in the range of techniques which are available to modify the surfaces of engineering components. This in tum has led to the emergence of the new field of surface engineering the design of a composite system (coating plus substrate) that produces a performance which cannot be achieved by either the coating or substrate alone. With this expansion comes the problem of deciding on the correct surfacing technology for a given application. Clearly, to take full advantage of the benefits which surface engineering offers, there is a need to explain, in a structured way, the basic features and interrelationships of the most recently developed coatings and treatments. Advanced Surface Coatings satisfies this need by providing a concise and authoritative state-of-the art review of surface engineering. In chapter 1 the reader is provided with an insight into the surfacing technology appropriate for a given function. Chapter 2 reviews the principles of plasma generation (a theme which is central to many of the advanced surface treatments and coatings) and forms a solid foundation for the chap ters which follow. Chapters 3 to 10 each discuss the general principles on which the technology is based, followed by an appreciation of specific properties and application areas for materials treated by each particular method. These chapters cover ion implantation, ion-assisted coatings, evaporation, sputtering, physical vapour deposition, chemical vapour deposi tion, thermal spraying, and laser treatments.Table of Oxford University Press Triumph of Emptiness
Book SynopsisIn this book, Mats Alvesson aims to demystify some popular and upbeat claims about a range of phenomena, including the knowledge society, consumption, branding, higher education, organizational change, professionalization, and leadership. He contends that a culture of grandiosity is leading to numerous inflated claims. We no longer talk about plans but strategies. Supervisors have been replaced by managers. Goods have become brands. Wealthy countries try to show that they are knowledge societies through mass higher education but with limited effect on real qualifications or qualified job opportunities for graduates. The book views the contemporary economy as an economy of persuasion, where firms and other institutions increasingly assign talent, energy, and resources to rhetoric, image, branding, reputation, and visibility.Using a wide range of empirical examples to illuminate the realms of consumption, higher education, organization, and leadership, this provocative and engaging book Trade ReviewAlvesson finds grandiosity at work behind an array of disconcerting phenomena, from a narcissistic socialmedia culture, to a hyper-adrenalised yet helplessly inane 24-hour news media cycle, to the explosion of public-relations firms and branding efforts. * Ross A. Mittiga, Political Studies Review *an engaging read that bravely tackles higher education orthodoxies * Joanna Williams, The Times Higher Education Supplement *This is a well-written, powerful book that makes you think and reflect about some of the key issues of our time. You couldnt ask for more. * Cary Cooper, Times Higher Education *The Triumph of Emptiness pulls back the proverbial curtain on our current society to reveal the empty truth behind our illusions of grandeur. Mats Alvesson leads us on a critical, smart, and often amusing romp through a world in which everything is excellent, advice is known as coaching, and vice presidents are a dime a dozen. He shows the increasing gap between reality and fantasy, need and want, and product production and the illusions necessary to sell them. Higher education is not immune to these trends, with ideas of college for all and the pronounced dumbing-down of university study. If you are interested in the strange paradox in rich societies of how we can have so much but not be any happier, read this book. * Jean M. Twenge, author of Generation Me and co-author of The Narcissism Epidemic *The Triumph of Emptiness is a provocative, insightful, and highly ambitious (even grandiose) indictment of consumption, work, and the organizations in which it occurs, as well as higher education. They are all critiqued for their grandiosity, inflated and distorted images, and mindless competitiveness. This is an uncompromising work that is likely to both enlighten and infuriate the reader. * George Ritzer, Distinguished University Professor, the University of Maryland *In The Triumph of Emptiness Mats Alvesson demonstrates the considerable value of critical theory for understanding everyday life in contemporary Western societies. Refreshingly astute as regards our current state of institutional being, this book is engagingly written and well-grounded in the best critical thought has to offer. Alvesson has once again accomplished what he does so wellthink a vital subject through with wit and insight. * Mary Jo Hatch, author of Organization Theory: Modern, Symbolic and Postmodern Perspectives *The author, a leading management scholar and a major sociological thinker, punctures the grandiosity and narcissism of our times when we succumb to the illusions that image, hype, and empty talk create value, when everyone must claim to be cutting edge and a world leader. Alvesson succeeds brilliantly in demonstrating that behind such grandiosity lurks an emptiness of meaning, of value, and of imagination. His powerful critical discussions of modern consumption, higher education, professionalism, and leadership insinuate that our current malaise goes far deeper than the economic crisis in which we find ourselves. This is a book that breaks loose of the management publication ghetto and demands to be read by everyone. * Yiannis Gabriel, Chair in Organizational Theory, University of Bath *most delightful book * Thomas Kilkauner, Organizational Change Management *Table of Contents1. Taylor & Francis The Routledge Handbook of Urban Design Research
Book SynopsisAs an evolving and contested field, urban design has been made, unmade, and remade at the intersections of multiple disciplines and professions. It is now a decisive moment for urban design to reflect on its rigour and relevance. This handbook is an attempt to seize this moment for urban design to further develop its theoretical and methodological knowledge base and engage with the question of what urban design can be with a primary focus on its research. This handbook includes contributions from both established and emerging scholars across the global North and global South to provide a more field-specific entry point by introducing a range of topics and lines of inquiry and discussing how they can be explored with a focus on the related research designs and methods. The specific aim, scope, and structure of this handbook are appealing to a range of audiences interested and/or involved in shaping places and public spaces. What makes this book quite distinctive from conventional handbooks on research methods is the way it has been structured in relation to some key research topics and questions in the field of urban design regarding the issues of agency, affordance, place, informality, and performance. In addition to the introduction chapter, this handbook includes 80 contributors and 52 chapters organised into five parts. The commissioned chapters showcase a wide range of topics, research designs, and methods with references to relevant scholarly works on the related topics and methods.
