Cambridge University Press Myths of the Underworld Journey
Book SynopsisPlato, Aristophanes and the creators of the 'Orphic' gold tablets employ the traditional tale of a journey to the realm of the dead to redefine the boundaries of their societies. The narratives in this 2004 book reveal their meanings through close analysis of the specific ways in which each makes use of the tradition.Trade ReviewReview of the hardback: 'Edmonds is a lively and intelligent guide to the many forks and detours on the journey. … anyone with an interest in Greek eschatology will find it a stimulating book.' JACTReview of the hardback: '… provides solid, interesting, and helpful insights'. Bryn Mawr Classical ReviewReview of the hardback: 'This is an enterprising, enjoyable, and scholarly book … Edmonds' extensive treatment of the gold funerary lamellae should help to make those puzzling but fascinating texts better known, and his discussions of both the Frogs and the Phaedo deserve close attention from anyone seriously interested in those very different yet mythologically related works. Edmonds' arguments are always informative and thought-provoking, even where they prompt disagreement.' Notre Dame Philosophical ReviewsReview of the hardback: '… stimulating … Edmond's approach leads to some intriguing discussion, and he does show how careful attention to the way the elements of a traditional tale are reworked in each telling can uncover hidden complexities.' Journal of Hellenic StudiesReview of the hardback: '… convincingly analyses how extensively Plato in the Phaedo redefines the ritual purity of the mysteries and funeral rites and traditional elements in mortuary journeys … The fascination for the reader in this analysis, as in Edmond's earlier ones, will be found in the details.' Raymond J. Clark, University of OttowaTable of Contents1. Introduction: the start of the journey; 2. Roadmaps of déviance: the 'Orphic' gold tablets; 3. John Wiley and Sons Ltd Why Do People Sing?: On Voice
Book SynopsisIn Why Do People Sing? Paddy Scannell explores some of the mysteries at the heart of vocal communication. What explains the communicative musicality of the voices between parent and child as a baby learns to talk? Can readers of fiction hear the voices of authors and characters within soundless written texts? How has radio affected voice, talk, music, and singing, and how has it made them public in new ways? And by putting the voice into recordings, to what extent have broadcasting technologies provided a radically new resource for historians? These questions and more are explored in the first three chapters. In the final chapter, Scannell boldly puts into words the inexpressible experience of listening to singing, wherein the glory of the human voice finds its purest expression. This highly original book makes a distinctive intervention by stressing the inherently positive qualities of talk (rather than language) as the basis for communication. Concise and beautifully written, it is suitable for students and scholars of media, communication, and other disciplines across the humanities, as well as general readers with an interest in this fascinating topic.Trade Review“Scannell’s book is a gem – distinctive and original. His commitment to a broad phenomenology of communication and the media offers an approach unlike anything else in the field, and his historical insights about the development of talk in broadcasting are unrivaled.”Martin Montgomery, University of Macau “In this probing set of personal meditations, Paddy Scannell plumbs our existential depths as interactive animals who find our ultimate meaning and freedom in the play of music and voice.”John Durham Peters, Yale UniversityTable of Contents Preface 1 The Voice of the Friend 2 Talk, Radio and Television 3 Technologies of Record 4 Why Do People Sing? John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Digital Divide
Book SynopsisContrary to optimistic visions of a free internet for all, the problem of the ‘digital divide’ – the disparity between those with access to internet technology and those without – has persisted for close to twenty-five years. In this textbook, Jan van Dijk considers the state of digital inequality and what we can do to tackle it. Through an accessible framework based on empirical research, he explores the motivations and challenges of seeking access and the development of requisite digital skills. He addresses key questions such as: Does digital inequality reduce or reinforce existing, traditional inequalities? Does it create new, previously unknown social inequalities? While digital inequality affects all aspects of society and the problem is here to stay, Van Dijk outlines policies we can put in place to mitigate it.The Digital Divide is required reading for students and scholars of media, communication, sociology, and related disciplines, as well as for policymakers.Trade Review“Van Dijk continues his twenty-five-year leadership in digital divide research, from motivations and attitudes, access to adoption, use and skills, through to outcomes and solutions. His integrative model organizes these issues into a thoughtful, critical and readable story.”Ronald Rice, University of California, Santa Barbara “Jan van Dijk can be considered the godfather of digital divide theory. In this book, he brings his earlier work forward into a world that has changed beyond what even he could imagine. Building on existing research and new theoretical developments, he shows that digital divides are changing shape and are likely getting worse. Anyone interested in why, what and who we should be worried about in increasingly digital societies has to read this book.”Ellen J. Helsper, author of The Digital Disconnect: Social Causes and Consequences of Digital Inequalities“The book is rich conceptually and provides frameworks and categorisations to explain every step of the digital media appropriation process... a welcome resource for students and academics as a reference on the evolution of research on the digital divide since the mid-nineties.”Information, Communication & Society“The Digital Divide is an excellent reference for those being introduced to the subject and for those who have long been interested in the issue. I recommend it as a tool and look forward to using it myself in this strange, terrible and awe-inspiring year, and in many years to come.”PrometheusTable of ContentsAcknowledgements 1 What is the Digital Divide? 2 Research and Theory of the Digital Divide 3 Motivation and Attitude 4 Physical Access 5 Digital and 21st-Century Skills 6 Usage Inequality 7 Outcomes 8 Social and Digital Inequality 9 Solutions to Soften the Digital Divide ReferencesIndex

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Creativity: Seven Keys to Unlock your Creative
Book SynopsisThis is a lively and thought-provoking book about how to do creativity, unlock your potential, and make a difference. The artists, musicians, and writers we think of as ’very creative’ are just like us, except that they have spent time developing and realising ideas, and have found the confidence to share them with the world. None of this comes naturally. This wide-ranging book offers research, advice, and philosophy to fuel your understanding and passion for creativity. David Gauntlett draws on his own experiences of making music and experimenting with digital media alongside 25 years of researching creativity. Including insights from a diverse array of creators, this book highlights the vitality of the individual creative voice in a world where social media offers a weird mix of inspiration and suffocation, and our struggles for social justice are equally hopeful and upsetting. Creativity shows how vulnerability, experimentation, and courage can enable us to become bold and engaging creators.Trade Review"Growing up is how we become alienated from ourselves and the creative superpowers we had as children. Gauntlett shows us the way back to play, learning, and the joy of realizing our true creative genius. A must-read."Cecilia Weckstrom, The LEGO Group"This wonderful book makes the impossibly complex process of creativity accessible, emotional, and playful."Clare Twomey, ceramic artist"We’re often told that creativity is a vital gift of the rarefied few, but Gauntlett shows that its magic can be unlocked for all of us. An inspiring, enthusiastic and, for this reader, life-shifting book!"Ben Barry, Dean of Fashion, Parsons School of DesignTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction 1. Identity 2. Experimenting 3.
The volume investigates in depth the phenomenon of the foreigner, who controlled by the schemata of social interaction can achieve both attractive and repulsive effects. These are often minimal situational shifts or context changes that determine the option for one side or the other and regulate the issue of social inclusion/exclusion without being stable over time. Attributions, labelling, stereotyping, stigmatization and discrimination that (can) be based on religious, ethnic, gender, ideological, economic, medical etc. categories ensure that inequalities are (re)produced in an interactive way via symbolic demarcations and the fields of one's own and the stranger's are being sealed. It is shown in this context, using examples of literary, cultural and linguistic analyses, that the problem of the foreigner does not only take on importance in light of the massive wave of migration and refugees, but also comes into its own in its social variant and entails (no less) critical encounters and/or painful arguments.
