Springer Nature Switzerland AG Sustainable Development, Career Counselling and
Book SynopsisThis book is based on the Life Design paradigm and discusses the efforts made to overcome the matching paradigm between individuals and their work contexts, in order to guarantee the adoption of an active role for future career planning. Starting from the evolution of career counselling and vocational guidance in the 20th century and then following the more updated reflections in the Life Design paradigm, this book discusses research results from the Larios Laboratory (Padova, Italy) in collaboration with numerous international colleagues and institutions. These results show that career counselling and vocational designing can not only help people to plan their future in agentive ways, but also to help them getting out of the ‘mists of the present’ and to project themselves into a future that is yet to be created. This future is aligned by the world of research and international institutions, such as the UN and WHO, and follows the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with particular attention to Sustainable Development Goals 4, 8 and 12. This book reveals how trajectories can be created from one’s own mission, realized with the help of others and newly acquired strengths. It shows how career counselling and vocational designing can help people to build their own future from an inclusive and sustainable perspective, based on social justice, and to help build a better future for all.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Chapter 1: Career Counseling and Vocational Designing, from the Origins to the end of the Last Century: the Moment of Maximum Possibilities.- Chapter 2: Threats and Challenges of the XXI Century and the Role of Career Counseling and Vocational Designing.- Chapter 3: Life Designing for an Inclusive, Sustainable and Equitable Future.- Chapter 4: New Dimensions and Instruments for an Inclusive and Sustainable Career Counseling.-Chapter 5: The Project «Stay inclusive, sustainable, curious, cosmopolitan, aspirant, etc.»: An example of operational paths and trajectories.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Story, Not Study: 30 Brief Lessons to Inspire
Book SynopsisMany researchers dread writing. They find it laborious - even painful - to put their scholarly work into words. They get bogged down in the study, and lose track of the story. And they produce uninspiring papers that fail to resonate with readers or reviewers. This book offers an antidote to this problem: brief, accessible lessons that guide researchers to write clear and compelling scientific manuscripts. The book is divided into three sections – Story, Craft, and Community. The Story section offers advice on getting the balance of study and story just right, introducing strategies for tackling each section of a scientific manuscript. The Craft section considers the grammatical and rhetorical tools of the trade, showing how they can be wielded for maximum impact. And the Community section offers suggestions for writing collaboratively, supporting other writers, and navigating peer review. Each section features multiple short and pragmatic lessons, peppered with illustrative examples. Readers can use the chapters collectively to build holistic writing skills, or dip in and out to refine specific elements of the craft. Rooted in a coaching philosophy, we aim to unlock our readers’ potential as writers through instruction, reflection, and example. And we hope to inspire researchers to face writing with joy. This work is clearly written and easily understandable. Its many practical examples, tools, and exercises make an effective toolbox of support for scholarly writers. This will be invaluable to new scholars and help established scholars as well. The inclusion of examples specific to the health arena and the clear, elegantly simple explanations add strength and relevance to this work.Toni Ungaretti, Johns Hopkins School of Education, Baltimore, MD, USA This book is the most original perspective I have ever read about the craft of writing. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Mentoring In Health Professions Education:
Book SynopsisThis IAMSE Manual, Mentoring Across the Continuum, is a product of its co-editors' and authors’ lifetime work in mentoring faculty and studying the impact of this mentoring. The book defines the field of academic medicine as highly dependent on finding and relating to mentors at virtually every stage of a doctor's career. It describes and analyzes successful mentor/mentee relationships, examining the authors' personal experiences, as well as a data-driven approach, to explore the many different roles and perspectives on mentoring relationships and ultimately the mentoring culture. The editors look at the data with respect to the success of different strategies in mentoring, as well as different structures of diverse mentoring programs. As well, proven ways to deliver these programs successfully for all professionals who lead mentoring programs or are active participants as mentees. There is a special emphasis on the mentoring of medical educators. However, the themes explored in this book are generalizable beyond the medical educator to include diverse academic roles across the continuum. In particular, enumerating the many specific roles of a mentor beyond just the traditional concepts adds breadth and depth to understanding what can be gained from mentor-mentee relationships. This Manual is a valuable resource for clinicians, educators, and trainees in addition to anyone involved in medical education and progressing through the stages of practicing, teaching, and learning in medicine. This Manual represents a meaningful addition to the literature on this most important professional subject.Table of Contents

Springer International Publishing AG Principles and Practice of Case-based Clinical Reasoning Education: A Method for Preclinical Students
Book SynopsisThis book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This volume describes and explains the educational method of Case-Based Clinical Reasoning (CBCR) used successfully in medical schools to prepare students to think like doctors before they enter the clinical arena and become engaged in patient care. Although this approach poses the paradoxical problem of a lack of clinical experience that is so essential for building proficiency in clinical reasoning, CBCR is built on the premise that solving clinical problems involves the ability to reason about disease processes. This requires knowledge of anatomy and the working and pathology of organ systems, as well as the ability to regard patient problems as patterns and compare them with instances of illness scripts of patients the clinician has seen in the past and stored in memory. CBCR stimulates the development of early, rudimentary illness scripts through elaboration and systematic discussion of the courses of action from the initial presentation of the patient to the final steps of clinical management. The book combines general backgrounds of clinical reasoning education and assessment with a detailed elaboration of the CBCR method for application in any medical curriculum, either as a mandatory or as an elective course. It consists of three parts: a general introduction to clinical reasoning education, application of the CBCR method, and cases that can used by educators to try out this method.Table of ContentsPART I: Backgrounds of educating preclinical students in clinical reasoning.- 1. Brill Learning in the World and on the Job: A Journey through Cheeseworld
Book SynopsisSchooling, the most ubiquitous species of formal educational practice, removes learners from the world in which they exist and places them in contrived environments in order to educate them for the world in which they will work, play, and engage in other forms of cultural production for the rest of their time on Earth. While this arrangement seems to work for some, particularly those in academia and policymaking (who make decisions about educating others), it serves many of us somewhat less satisfactorily. This book documents the ongoing journey of a young cheese professional as she navigates the worlds of formal and informal education and the craft and art of cheesemaking. Her self-education is examined as she appropriates available resources in the service of constructing a professional learning program in the world and on the job. As she both succeeds and bumps up against obstacles in the pursuit of a life and a future in uncharted territory, we explore her being and becoming a professional cheesemaker, affineur and cheesemonger. A parallel story of an emerging educational researcher is examined as he partners with the cheese professional, propelling both of their stories into uncharted territory.Table of ContentsForeword: Learning from Lived Experience and Communicating What Has Been Learned Kenneth Tobin Preface Acknowledgments A Readers’ Guide 1 The Researchers and the Researched 1 Researcher: Mitch 2 Researcher: Ashley 3 The Research 2 Cheeseworld Odessey: The Self-Education of a Cheese Professional Mitch Bleier and Ashley N. Brill Career Development and Systems Theory: Connecting Theory and Practice (4th Edition)
Book SynopsisThis fourth edition of the book represents a milestone in the history of the Systems Theory Framework of career development that attests to its continuing influence and contemporary relevance. It emphasises changes in career development theory, practice, and research since its first edition in 1999. At that time, the publication of the STF was described by reviewers as a “groundbreaking departure from traditional counseling texts”, a “landmark work leading to the convergence of career development theories”, and as a “rare book that not only illuminates a field of study but also advances it”. Subsequent commentary attests to the strength of the metatheoretical contribution of the STF and its facilitation of links between theory, research, and practice. This book introduces systems theory and the STF, and comprehensively overviews traditional and contemporary career theory and analyses it through the metatheoretical lens of the STF. It then describes applications of the STF by applying systems thinking, systems mapping and experiential learning. Finally, the contributions and future directions of the STF are highlighted. This book provides a record of almost 30 years of contribution of the STF to career theory, research, and practice.Table of ContentsPreface List of Figures and Tables About the Authors PART 1: Introducing Systems Theory and the Systems Theory Framework of Career Development 1 Introducing Career Development and Systems Theory 1 History of Career Development 2 Terminology 3 Philosophical Underpinnings of Our Understandings of Career 4 Career Development Theory 5 Conclusion 2 Systems Theory 1 The Development of Systems Theory 2 General Systems Theory 3 Major Contributors to Systems Theory 4 Themes in Systems Theory 5 Systems Theory Elements 6 Systems Theory Perspectives in Career Theory 7 Systems Theory and Related Conceptualisations 8 Conclusion 3 The Systems Theory Framework of Career Development 1 Development of the Systems Theory Framework 2 The Systems Theory Framework 3 Advantages of the Systems Theory Framework 4 Limitations of a Systems Theory Perspective 5 Implications of a Systems Theory Perspective 6 Conclusion PART 2: Review of Career Theory 4 Theories Focusing on Content 1 The Work of Frank Parsons 2 Differential Psychology 3 Bordin’s Psychodynamic Model of Career Choice 4 D.
