Cengage Learning, Inc Elementary Science Methods
Book SynopsisIn this pioneering text, a constructivist approach guides users in learning how to teach in a constructivist manner. The book is based on the belief that it's more important for children to learn how to do science than it is for them to learn about science, and that teachers of elementary science do not need to know a great deal of science to teach it effectively, but rather need to be co-inquirers with their students. More than 170 process-oriented activities, organized by grade level, help practicing teachers encourage children to develop and perform their own investigations.Table of ContentsPart I: CONSTRUCTING THE ELEMENTARY SCIENCE PROGRAM. 1. Temple University Press,U.S. Workforce Development Politics: Civic Capacity
Book SynopsisIf 88 percent of Americans believe that education and training resources should be available to the jobless and more than two-thirds of employers have identified workforce and skills shortages as top priorities, why aren't we, as a society, able to provide that training in such a way that it leads to long-term economic security? This book looks at the politics of local and regional workforce development: the ways politicians and others concerned with the workforce systems have helped or hindered that process. The contributors examine the current systems that are in place in these cities and the potential for systemic reform through case studies of Denver, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Seattle. This book is published in association with the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Author note: Robert P. Giloth, Ph.D. is Director of the Family Economic Success area of the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Prior to joining the Foundation in December 1994, he managed community development corporations in Baltimore and Chicago and was Deputy Commissioner of Economic Development under Mayor Harold Washington.Trade Review"Why can't a local coalition of civic leaders be assembled to transform lackluster second chance workforce programs into high performing workforce development investments, just as they mobilized, time and again, to build a new sports stadium, or make a bid to host the Olympics? The payoffs for creating a competitive workforce seem obvious: competitive firms, productive workers, a higher tax base, and more attractive and competitive regions." --from the Introduction "Bob Giloth and his colleagues demonstrate a clear understanding of the importance of investing in human capital. What makes Giloth's reflections particularly useful are the connections he draws between the development of an active civic culture, grassroots leadership, and the long-term success of job training initiatives such as Project QUEST in San Antonio." --Ernesto Cortes, Jr., Industrial Areas Foundation "Workforce Development Politics offers a penetrating view of community struggles to eradicate entrenched poverty and to enhance the pool of skilled labor. Searching for the magical elixir that makes local coalitions of diverse interests succeed, this masterful work would fascinate Tocqueville and will inspire those searching for win-win solutions to the problems of the American political economy." --Cathie Jo Martin, Professor of Political Science, Boston University "This is an exciting project, and a welcome departure from the current state of workforce development research. It sets as its focus the 'urban workforce system,' a concept that resonates strongly with currents within workforce development policy and practice that emphasize regional economies, intersecting patterns of labor market segmentation, the role of diverse labor market intermediaries, and issues of system governance. The group of contributors is top-notch, and the cases are of wide interest." --Nik Theodore, Director, Center for Urban Economic Development, University of Illinois at ChicagoTable of Contents1. Harvard Educational Publishing Group Core Practices for Project-Based Learning: A Guide for Teachers and Leaders
Book SynopsisCore Practices for Project-Based Learning offers a framework and essential set of strategies for successfully implementing project-based learning (PBL) in the classroom. Centering on teaching practice, this work moves beyond project planning to focus on the complex instructional demands of the student-centered PBL approach. Pam Grossman and her colleagues draw on their research with teachers, educational leaders, and curriculum designers to identify the instructional goals, practices, and mindsets that enable educators to effectively facilitate deep learning in PBL environments. The authors first define the four primary teaching goals of the PBL model: supporting subject-area learning, engaging students in authentic work, encouraging student collaboration and agency, and building an iterative culture where students are always prototyping, reflecting, and trying again. They then equip educators with ten key practices that serve these goals. These practices include methods to elicit higher-order thinking, engage students in disciplinary and interdisciplinary practice, and mentor student decision making. The authors guide educators from a clear starting place through a series of concrete, manageable steps that apply whether they are initiating PBL or working to improve the quality of existing PBL implementation. Extended case studies illustrate the use of the core practices in real-world situations.Core Practices for Project-Based Learning is an invaluable resource to help educators realize their instructional vision and create meaningful student experiences.

Kendall/Hunt Publishing Co ,U.S. Explore. Prepare. Succeed.
Book SynopsisWhy are you here, at this institution, in this class? As educators and students we are quick to think about the 'what' and the 'how' of the college experience. What is general education? How can I get these requirements completed? What do I do with myself in this new environment? While all important, the answers to these questions come with time and relative ease given the abundance of student resources and services. Why are you here, how do you see the world, and what do you want to do in your life? These questions lack straightforward answers, but they are crucial for instructors to ask and students to address individually and uniquely. Finding personal meaning in one's education requires introspection and self-awareness that comes through grappling with core assumptions and values, and rummaging through implicit expectations to identify genuine interests and concomitant goals. This text facilitates this learning process by posing these fundamental questions and providing frameworks for thinking about how they might impact a student's approach to their learning and life. It has less to do with the content of the articles and more to do with guiding students as they ponder a range of 'whys' and grapple with the juxtaposition of new perspectives with their current viewpoints. It encourages students to examine themselves, their worldview, their resiliency, their purpose, and their calling. It invites them to entertain thoughts that may seem dissonant or ambiguous in order to encourage a deeper level of learning.Table of Contents Foreword CHAPTER 1 Transition ? Mlodinow, L. (2018). Butler Centre for Arkansas Studies Man of Vision: Arkansas Education and the Legacy
Book SynopsisAs commissioner of the Arkansas Department of Education from 1953 to 1978, Arch Ford served under five governors. His vision was to expand educational opportunities because he believed education was the foundation for improving people’s lives. Throughout his career, he campaigned for increased educational funding, better-qualified teachers, and higher teachers’ salaries. Ford helped lead the state in peacefully integrating its schools and established twenty-three vocational-technical schools across the state. During Ford’s tenure, the Arkansas Children’s Colony was established to provide educational services to the developmentally disabled, and the Arkansas Educational Television Network was set up to provide instructional programming across the state. The state also expanded educational opportunities to include kindergarten, special education, community colleges, and adult education. His leadership left Arkansas with a strong educational system that continued to advance. This was his legacy.
