Nova Science Publishers Inc Supercapacitors: Electrochemical Properties,
Book SynopsisElectrochemical Capacitors (ECs) are a class of energy storage device that fill the gap between high energy density batteries and high-power-density electrostatic capacitors. ECs show shorter charge/discharge time and higher power density compared to batteries. However, to use ECs as alternatives to batteries, a significant increase in energy density is required. Although critical to the U.S.''s energy future, development of ECs has been hindered by the lack of cost-effective electrode materials that can store more energy. As a cheaper alternative transition metal, manganese (Mn) is abundant and environmentally-friendly. Manganese oxide shows theoretical capacitance of ~800 F g-1, which is comparable to that of RuO2. However, owing to low electronic and ionic conductance, manganese oxide powder exhibits much lower specific capacitances. This book discusses studies of charge-storage mechanism of manganese oxide nanomaterials for ECs. It also discusses sustainable electrode materials made from electrospun alkali lignin-based carbon nanofibres for high performacen supercapacitors; new strategies for the improvement of SC energy density by covalent and non-covalent addition of qunones of carbon surfaces; maganese dioxide based SCs; supercapacitors test methods; and hydrogenated barium titanate films and their potential for integrated SCs.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Fullerenes: Chemistry, Natural Sources and
Book SynopsisFullerenes are molecules composed entirely of carbon atoms, arranged into structures similar to graphite, i.e., stacked graphene sheets of linked hexagonal rings; but they may also contain pentagonal (or sometimes heptagonal) rings. The rings then form nanoparticles of various shapes, such as hollow spheres, ellipsoids, and also cylinders (tubes). Fullerenes are important biologically active molecules with diverse effects on cells and tissues. They are able to oxidize biological molecules and cause serious damage to them, which can lead to cell malfunctioning, genome mutations and cell death. Simultaneously, fullerenes can act as reduction agents. Both the harmful oxidizing effects and the beneficial reducing effects of fullerenes can be exploited for preventing and treating various disorders. This book discusses the chemistry of fullerenes, as well as its natural sources and several technological applications.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Application of Electrospun Fibers in Tissue
Book SynopsisThe process of electrospinning has experienced decades of development for a variety of applications including air filtration and tissue engineering. However, it has not been until the past decade that this process has been a focus in the field of tissue engineering. The unique properties of electrospun fibers have drawn remarkable attention within the field of tissue engineering due to its capacity to mimic the native tissue structural element, the extracellular matrix, and its ability to promote cell proliferation and enhanced tissue regeneration. Herein, we have summarised some different applications of electrospun fibers in tissue engineering while demonstrating the cellular interactions between various cells and electrospun fiber scaffolds. The key aspect is a focus on the potential use of electrospinning in tissue regeneration. The hope is that this book will be beneficial to students and researchers in developing a general knowledge of the tissue engineering and regeneration application of electrospun fibers. We hope it will also inspire their curiosity and creativity to allow for the fabricating of advanced tissue engineering scaffolds for use in developing successful products that will allow for improving the quality of life.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Physical Chemical & Biological Treatment
Book SynopsisWater pollution occurs when toxic pollutants of varying kinds (organic, inorganic, radioactive and so on) are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove such potential pollutants. Today''s sources of these potential pollutants, which cause high deterioration of freshwater quality, are city sewage and industrial waste discharge, human agricultural practices, industrial waste disposal practices, mining activities, civil and structural work activities and obviously natural contamination with climate change. When our water is polluted, it is not only devastating to the environment but also to human health. Therefore, development of water and wastewater treatment processes to alleviate water pollution has been a challenging and demanding task for engineers, scientists and researchers. Perhaps this is even more challenging for underdeveloped and developing countries, where water and wastewater treatment facilities, knowledge and infrastructure are limited. Water and wastewater treatment processes are broad and often multidisciplinary in nature, comprising a mixture of research areas including physical, chemical and biological methods to remove or transform various potential pollutants. This is in hopes to achieve acceptable water quality and satisfy governmental and environmental protection agencies'' laws and regulations. With these objectives, this book has been written in order to provide various research results and compilation and up-to-date development on the current states of knowledge and techniques in the broad field of water and wastewater treatment processes. Basically, this book will give a comprehensive understanding and advancement and application of various physical, chemical and biological treatment methods in the reduction of potential pollutants (inorganics/organics) from water and wastewater. There are a total 18 book chapters contributed by large number of expert authors around the world, covering the following main research areas: Physical, chemical and biological water treatment processes such as adsorption, biosorption, coagulation/flocculation, electrocoagulation, denitration, membrane filtration/separation, photo-catalytic reduction, advanced oxidation, nutrients removal by struvite crystallisation and nanotechnology; Physical, chemical and biological methods for municipal wastewater and industrial wastewater treatment plants such as primary-secondary sludge treatments, anaerobic digestions, aerobic treatment, activated sludge processes, dewaterability by flocculants, pre-treatments of sludge and rheology of sludge in wastewater treatment; Various operational units/equipment and process control of wastewater treatment plant.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Molybdenum Disulfide: Synthesis, Properties &
Book SynopsisMolybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a semiconductor which is composed of Mo atoms sandwiched between two layers of hexagonal close packed sulfur atoms in a structure similar to graphene. Traditionally, it has been used as a solid lubricant due to its low friction properties and as a hydrodesulfurisation catalyst to lower the sulfur content in natural gas and fuels. Bulk MoS2 were first examined as a possible hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalyst as early as 1977 by Tributsch et al. However, it was not until about 20 years later that its potential in the hydrogen evolution reaction was fully unveiled. This book discusses the synthesis, properties and industrial applications of molybdenum disulfide.

MIT Press Enriching the Earth Fritz Haber Carl Bosch and the Transformation of World Food Production The MIT Press
Book SynopsisDr. Smil is the world's authority on nitrogenous fertilizer. The industrial synthesis of ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen has been of greater fundamental importance to the modern world than the invention of the airplane, nuclear energy, space flight, or television. The expansion of the world's population from 1.6 billion people in 1900 to today's six billion would not have been possible without the synthesis of ammonia. In Enriching the Earth, Vaclav Smil begins with a discussion of nitrogen's unique status in the biosphere, its role in crop production, and traditional means of supplying the nutrient. He then looks at various attempts to expand natural nitrogen flows through mineral and synthetic fertilizers. The core of the book is a detailed narrative of the discovery of ammonia synthesis by Fritz Haber—a discovery scientists had sought for over one hundred years—and its commercialization by Carl Bosch and the chemical company BASF.
