Imperial War Museum John Singer Sargent's Gassed
Book SynopsisJohn Singer Sargent's Gassed is one of IWM's most iconic and best-loved objects. Truly monumental in scale, it is also the largest painting in the museum's collection and has been on near-constant display since it was first exhibited in 1919. A favourite among visitors and the most requested image by researchers and publishers, the work endures as a lasting symbol of modern art in public service, and of the transformative conflict from which it came. In the following pages IWM's Head of Art Rebecca Newell traces the origins of this large and powerful painting in the final months of the First World War and celebrates the vibrancy and visual power of the work, revealed once again during recent conservation. John Singer Sargent's Gassed reflects on the challenges of creating and displaying a canvas of such size and the dramatic impact the work has had on generations of visitors to IWM. Finally, the book considers the painting's enduring legacy in the context of art inspired by conflict - a legacy now secured for future generations.

Figure 1 Publishing Echoes of the Supernatural: The Graphic Art of
Book SynopsisOver six decades of brilliant prints and paintings from the most prominent Northwest Coast artist of his generation.Finalist for the Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize, a BC & Yukon Book Prize Since leaving Haida Gwaii to study art in Vancouver—where he carved argillite with Bill Reid in a department store and hand-sold prints on the UBC campus—Guud sans glans, Robert Davidson has moved between two worlds. As a host of Potlatches, carver of masks and totem poles, and performer and teacher of traditional Haida songs and dances, he has been one of the driving forces in the resurgence of Haida culture in the aftermath of colonization. As an artist working in serigraphs, acrylic, wood, silver, and aluminum to preserve and breathe new life into Haida formline, he has become among the most respected, celebrated, and thrilling artists in the country, if not the world.Echoes of the Supernatural is the first publication in over forty years to offer a comprehensive visual retrospective of his astonishing career. It includes new photography of over 150 prints, as well as images of over fifty paintings; numerous painted woven hats, painted and carved sculptures, jewellery, aluminum sculpture; and dozens of archival photos. His long-time gallerist Gary Wyatt, who worked closely with Davidson in shaping the book and received full access to his archives, details the artist’s life and career, and offers insights on the work based on extensive new interviews. A foreword by Karen Duffek situates the contours of Davidson’s practice within the broader Northwest Coast art world. Trade Review"The book is a visual marvel, with its bold colours and the dramatic curves of Haida formline, aspects that are incorporated into its design, including the stunning cover."—Galleries West"This singularly gorgeous book showcases the extraordinary work of Guud San Glans Robert Davidson, one of the world’s most innovative and influential contemporary Indigenous artists. Echoes of the Supernatural is art publishing at its best, delivering a volume of breath-taking textual and print quality"—British Columbia Review"Since the 1960s, Guud san glans Robert Davidson has been instrumental in the renaissance of Haida art and culture and has long been appreciated as one of the most inventive artists working within Haida artistic traditions." —Broadway World"A stunning and interesting collection of Davidson’s prints, paintings, and drawings."—Calgary Herald"Robert Davidson is a modern master who helped spark a renaissance."—Vancouver Sun"Davidson described his role in the resurgence of Northwest Coast art and culture as one of not only solving the "puzzle", but of bringing it back.—Stir"A big and bountiful book, by independent writer and curator Gary Wyatt, it is jointly published by the VAG and Figure.1—not as a catalogue to the show but as a separate and distinct record of Davidson’s astounding achievements in two-dimensional art forms."—Preview Art Magazine

New Directions Publishing Corporation Walks with Walser
Book SynopsisA unique and personal portrait of the beloved, legendary Swiss writer, finally in EnglishTrade Review"[Carl Seelig's] personal, firsthand account is the closest we will ever have to a Walser memoir. The questions he poses to Walser, regarding his personal and professional history and his literary and political opinions, seem like those of an oral historian, and Walser, trusting his companion, answers with presence of mind, inflecting the conversation with his characteristic humor and unusual observations." -- Sarah Cowan - Bookforum"A fascinating document that is both insightful and humane." -- Geist Magazine"[A]n invaluable text for any serious reader of Walser..." -- Literary Hub"To use a word much favoured by Walser himself, it’s delightful." -- Dorian Stuber - Numero Cinq"Now, with its translation by Anne Posten, English-language readers can witness, as if in real time, the blossoming of his friendship with the great Swiss author, a bond that would lead to a lifelong effort to keep Walser’s name before the public." -- Michael LaPointe - TSL"After a nervous breakdown in 1929, Walser spent the remaining 27 years of his life in mental asylums, going from outer exile to inner exile. Walking replaced writing for Walser, and from 1936 onward his friend Carl Seelig recorded their conversations while they walked in Switzerland. It’s an extraordinary book that prompted me to found my first museum in 1992: a migratory Robert Walser museum on the theme of the periphery." -- Hans-Ulrich Obrist - Vulture"That Walser is not today among the forgotten writers we owe primarily to the fact that Carl Seelig took up his cause. Without Seelig’s accounts of the walks he took with Walser, without his preliminary work on the biography, without the selections from the work he published and the lengths he went to in securing the Nachlass—the writer’s millions of illegible ciphers—Walser’s rehabilitation could never have taken place, and his memory would in all probability have faded into oblivion." -- W. G. Sebald"Seelig kindly visited Walser and started keeping a record of his opinions, creating over the course of time an indispensable document for all those who love Walser’s surprising prose, which, silent as snowfall, cries out from the nothingness. Walser—as can be observed in Seelig’s book—lectured on beer and twilight." -- Enrique Vila-Matas"Walks with Walser is filled with Walser’s philosophy about leading a modest life, finding beauty in mundane things, and getting by with less." -- Moyra Davey"Robert Walser, who spent much of his adult life in Swiss mental hospitals, is now revered for his prose miniatures and his bizarre and haunting novel, Jakob von Gunten, set in a training school for servants. These reminiscences, by his literary executor, preserve Walser's conversation, especially about writers and writing, as well as Seelig's memories of his friend trudging along like 'a weary Sherpa' or suddenly calling for 'beer and twilight.'" -- The Washington Post

Anthology Editions We Ate the Acid
Book SynopsisArtist Joe Roberts has spent more than a decade honing a deeply unique and unapologetically hallucinogenic style of art. Through paintings, drawings and mixed-media works, Roberts navigates a world of cosmic imagery, pop cultural detritus, and shifting geometric forms, bringing to life both the creeping unease and the uncanny humor of the psychedelic experience. Collecting over 100 new and recent works along with an introduction by Hamilton Morris (Hamilton’s Pharmacopeia), We Ate the Acid is the latest product of Roberts’ visionary journeys and a testament to his expansive, singular imagination.Trade ReviewJoe Roberts draws on pop-cultural imagery from the 1960s to the ’90s, filtering them through his own experiences, and re-presenting them in mixed-media works that recall Mike Kelley or Chris Johanson. Mickey Mouse, Casper, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles all make appearances, but here they’re dropping acid or eating pizza, fellow travelers in Roberts’s personal journey. -HyperallergicThrough his work, Roberts returns to what most children already know, that whatever is experienced and imagined really is reality, and sometimes there’s no need to muddle it up. In that same way, he refutes the idea that childish is synonymous with simple, it’s that childish is more akin to infinite. - Juxtapoz (11/14/2018)We Ate the Acid, Roberts’ new book published by Anthology Editions, is the latest product of his visionary journey and a testament to his expansive, singular imagination. Along with Roberts’ unpretentious paintings, the 140-page book presents original drawings, collages and surrealistic scenes of everything from UFO sightings amongst cityscapes, to candid still-life’s in nature. Amongst smiley faces, dancing Kokopelli, and Grateful Dead stealies, the book chronicles a range of fantastical imagery that carries a childlike wonder and begs the viewer to join the experience themselves. - Amadeus (11/26/2018)Through his work, Roberts returns to what most children already know, that whatever is experienced and imagined really is reality, and sometimes there’s no need to muddle it up. In that same way, he refutes the idea that childish is synonymous with simple, it’s that childish is more akin to infinite. -JuxtapozNew York Times art critic Ken Johnson, author of Are You Experienced? How Psychedelic Consciousness Transformed Modern Art, argues that Roberts’ work is part of a resurgent psychedelic movement: “This whole psychedelic thing is still part of our culture. It’s not over.” Johnson’s thesis is that, since the mass consumption of LSD began in the mid 1960s, hallucinogens have altered the minds of so many people that much contemporary art has come to conform with what one critic called the “psychedelic paradigm”. If so, then it’s little wonder Roberts’ work has become so marketable. - The Guardian"A cult following in the skateboarding community, fashion collaborations with Supreme and an archive of trippy artworks putting a fresh twist on 60s psychedelia: Joe Roberts is the outsider artist you need to know." - Hunger"Roberts' work manages to toe the line between playful and edgy, imaginative and nightmarishly vivid." - Hypebeast"Joe creates work which guide the viewer through a menagerie of psychedelic shapes, colours, pop culture figures and mystic symbols. Existing somewhere between fear, euphoria, and what the fuck, Joe's trips incorporate collage, diorama, drawing and painting evocative of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Joseph Cornell. " - Monster Children

Editions Flammarion Alberto Giacometti: A Biography
Book SynopsisAn insightful and comprehensive biography of the great twentieth century sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Alberto Giacometti was one of the most enigmatic and memorable personalities of the twentieth century. Born in Switzerland in 1901, he settled in Paris in 1922 where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. Giacometti’s early influences included his father—painter Giovanni Giacometti—sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, and mentors Zadkine, Lipchitz, and Laurens. When he turned from cubism to surrealism, his work earned near-instantaneous recognition, but Giacometti quickly moved on, pioneering a solitary path on the margin of contemporary trends. Today, his signature elongated sculptures are icons of art history. The fruit of new research, this riveting biography offers a chronological look at the whole of the artist’s life and work. It is published in coordination with the Giacometti exhibition at the Guggenheim in New York (June 8‒September 16, 2018).

Duke University Press Other Planes of There
Book SynopsisIn addition to being a renowned artist, Renée Green is also a prolific writer and a major voice in the international art world. Other Planes of There gathers for the first time a substantial collection of the work she wrote between 1981 and 2010.Trade Review“[B]y interweaving an astounding diversity of tones, modes, subjects, and genres into a single body of writing, Green reveals many of the underlying interactions and interconnections that would seem to shape our contemporary moment. In the pieces collected in the volume, Green oscillates between the poles of academic and literary ambition, combining the poetic with the analytic, the diaristic with the theoretical, the autobiographical with the systematic, the tentative with the polemical. . . . Other Planes of There offers both a critical genealogy of and a reflexive corrective to our present art-historical and political moment.” -- André Rottmann * Artforum *“Anticipating the artist’s expanded function—the various ‘turns’ of the 2000s—Green wears many hats, acting at once as a curator, archivist, events organizer, and independent distributor (a role she calls ‘free media agent’). . . . An important resource for those seeking to understand what has happened in progressive art discourse for the past twenty years. Other Planes of There also offers a model for how artists might situate their work through a critical, process-intensive writing practice.” -- Thom Donovan * BOMB *“The book is evidence of what remains an ongoing process, which continues to grow in the minds of those that read it or come to encounter Green’s work. Rooted within the fabric of every text is Green’s voice, which remains one of questioning the world, through a continual prodding and reexamination of methods of understanding, transmission, and communication.” -- Maia Nichols * Full Stop *“Complete with an extensive Publishing History, Curriculum Vitae and Index that indicate clearly the rich scope of this anthology, this certainly is a beautiful example of what thinking through and with work can lead to.” -- Edith Doove * Leonardo Reviews *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments xi Introductory Essays Other Planes, Different Phases, My Geometry, Times, Movements: Becomings Ongoings 1 Remarks on the Writings of Renee Green, by Gloria Sutton 19 Genealogies 1. Pallant House Gallery Trust Ben Nicholson: From the Studio
Book SynopsisAn intimate look at Ben Nicholson's everyday inspirations Throughout his career, Ben Nicholson (1894–1982) transformed everyday homewares into extraordinary experiments in abstract art. Nicholson’s studio was filled with objects that inspired him. From patterned mocha-ware jugs and cut glass goblets to spanners, hammers and chisels, these ordinary personal possessions were a source of almost endless inspiration to the artist. This book brings together for the first time Nicholson’s paintings, reliefs, prints and drawings alongside his rarely seen personal possessions and studio tools. It traces how the artist’s style developed, from his early traditional tabletop still lifes to his later abstract works. Still life was at the heart of Nicholson’s artistic practice. Through these humble items, he began to experiment with form and color. His early works in particular owed inspiration to his father, the painter William Nicholson. The book traces the artistic and personal influences on Nicholson’s evolutionary still life style from the 1920s to the 1970s. It explores his time with Winifred Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, as well as his encounters with other Modernist greats, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondrian. Distributed for Pallant House Gallery

Tate Publishing 100 Figures: The Unseen Art of Quentin Blake
Book SynopsisQuentin Blake's illustrations are instantly recognisable to millions of people around the world. A new exhibition to be held at London's House of Illustration will explore an unusual aspect of Blake's work, however, exhibiting for the first time 100 examples of his works of art. 100 Figures, will feature all of the 100 exhibited works - ranging from large-scale oil paintings to drawings and prints, created between the 1950s and today. Works included date back to his post-grad years in the 1950s when he struggled to make a living as an illustrator and took life-drawing classes at Chelsea School of Art. It was here that he first engaged with the human figure, but soon, having observed how the human body behaves, he found he was able to draw it from memory in any pose, working from his vivid imagination. 100 Figures will also offer the chance to catch a rare glimpse of early oil paintings by Blake - some painted on hardboard since he was unable to afford canvases at that time and painted using commercial house-painters' brushes.

Taschen GmbH Degas
Book SynopsisMost commonly associated with the birth of the Impressionist movement in mid-19th-century Paris, Edgar Degas (1834–1917) in fact defied easy categorization and instead developed a unique style, strongly influenced by Old Masters, the body in motion, and everyday urban life. The elder scion of a wealthy family, Degas cofounded a series of exhibitions of “Impressionist” art, but soon disassociated himself from the group in pursuit of a more realist approach. His subjects centered on the teeming, noisy streets of Paris, as well as its leisure entertainments, such as horse racing, cabarets, and, most particularly, ballet. With often ambitious, off-kilter vantage points, his images of ballerinas numbered approximately 1,500 works, all deeply invested in the physicality and the discipline of dance. Through illustrations of Foyer de la Danse (1872), Musicians in the Orchestra (1872), and many more, this book provides an essential overview of the artist who created a category all his own, a world of classical resonance, bold compositions, and an endless fascination with movement, which together produced some of the most striking and influential works of the era.

Royal Academy of Arts Bill Jacklin
Book SynopsisBorn in 1943 in London, Bill Jacklin RA studied and worked in graphic design before a move to study painting at the Royal College of Art. Initially abstract, his work moved towards figuration in the mid-1970s, at which point he also became preoccupied with the effects of light and movement, twin strands that have characterised his work ever since. Since his move to New York in 1985, he has concentrated on painting portraits of the city in all its guises, from large-scale compositions of crowds in flux to Seurat-like etchings depicting more intimate urban moments.Jacklin enjoys making monotypes, whose fusion of printmaking and painting techniques is particularly well suited to his subject-matter. Painted on a polished, non-absorbent surface, these images are unique, and no reusable element, such as an etching plate, woodblock or stencil, is employed in their creation. This handsome new book reproduces a wide range of Jacklin's exuberant monotypes and contains an informative ac

Radius Books Shirin Neshat: Land of Dreams
Book SynopsisA multimedia portrait of a fictional woman artist caught between two cultures In her latest body of work, multimedia artist Shirin Neshat (born 1957) turns her focus to the American West. With more than 100 photographs, a two-channel video installation and a feature film, Neshat creates a multilayered look at contemporary America through the eyes of a fictionalized artist. Monumental black-and-white photographs are transformed through Neshat's use of Farsi text and images that have been hand-drawn onto the picture. The texts represent Neshat's interpretation of the dreams of the sitter, with references to ancient myths and ideologies. Neshat works and experiments with photography, video and film, imbuing them with highly poetic and politically charged images and narratives that question issues of power, religion, race, gender and the relationship between the past and present, occident and orient, individual and collective through the lens of her personal experiences as an Iranian woman living in exile.

Dulwich Picture Gallery Rubens & Women
Book Synopsis The art of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is synonymous with the female nude, with the term ‘Rubenesque’ first coined in the 19th century to describe a voluptuous female body. Yet remarkably, there has never been a focused study of Rubens’ depictions of women, making this book, and the exhibition that it will accompany, a first. Bringing together a diverse range of paintings and drawings from throughout the artist’s career and from a range of international lenders, the exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery (October 2023 – January 2024) will challenge the popular assumption that Rubens only painted one type of woman. Instead, it will present a more nuanced view of the varied and essential role that women played in the artist’s life and work, uniting and contributing to recent scholarly developments in subjects such as the identities of Rubens’ sitters, 17th century artistic theory and practice, and Rubens’ treatment of the human body. Rubens evidently enjoyed painting the female figure, especially in its sensual and unclothed form. But his women are never mere bodies trapped by the male gaze, on the contrary; they are proud and complex heroines, full of character and gravitas. No other male artist has created such potent images of female power, assurance, determination, commitment, and beauty. Providing a catalogue for the works in the exhibition and featuring three introductory essays that contextualise Rubens’ work, this publication will both contribute to the existing corpus of scholarly literature on Rubens and introduce his masterpieces to new audiences, discussing them in the context of current debates around sexuality, power and feminism. Book SynopsisIn chronological order, the O'Keeffe paintings that were inspired by the landscape of New Mexico are reproduced in this oversize volume, a companion to Georgia O'Keefe: 100 Flowers. Although she began her career as a painter in the East, O'Keeffe considered the West her spiritual home, as well as the greatest source of inspiration. Atelier Editions In Pursuit of Color: From Fungi to Fossil Fuels:
Book SynopsisAn engrossing look at the rich and turbulent history of coloring cloth Over the centuries our manipulation of the natural world has resulted in an explosion of synthetic dye production and application globally. To gain insight into the history of how folk practices have been lost and technical processes found, anthropologist and textile artist Lauren MacDonald explores a practice that is both ancient and wholly modern: coloring cloth. The pursuit of color has long spurred economic and social contest, and through this deeply researched volume we explore the stories that the materials used to dye cloth tell us about our complex relationship to nature, our troubling ideas about progress and our understanding of power and labor. In Pursuit of Color brings together historic techniques, archive photography, specimens and present-day events to tell the histories of some of the world’s most important dyestuffs. A 32-page supplement accompanies the volume, detailing practical applications and the chemistry behind dyeing processes. The book comes in three different covers (red, yellow and blue) which are shipped randomly as a further happy surprise. Lauren MacDonald (born 1990) is a Canadian-born multidisciplinary artist, designer and founder of the London, UK textiles studio Working Cloth. Yale University Press Franz Kafka
Book SynopsisThe first book to publish the entirety of Franz Kafka’s graphic output, including more than 100 newly discovered drawingsTrade Review“Franz Kafka’s drawings are neither ‘scribblings’ (as he called them) nor illustrations meant as mere accompaniments to text. . . . Kafka saw pictures and words as not complementary but independent, even irresolvable. The figures he drew stand alone as stories in themselves.”—Lauren Christensen, New York Times Book Review“[Kafka] was serious about the visual as well as the verbal. . . . His figures are grotesques, sometimes comical, sometimes cruel, their bodies, often drawn in dark black ink, like Rorschach blots come to life.”—Max Norman, Wall Street Journal“The more you move through this book, the more drawing and writing seem to exist for Kafka on a single and intricate plane, and it begins to change all the usual perspectives.”—Adam Thirlwell, Times Literary Supplement“Exquisitely produced. . . . In these drawings we see Kafka, unshackled from the cognitive cage of verbal meaning, remembering how to play. . . . Kilcher’s discussion of the influence on Kafka of Asian art . . . is especially interesting.”—George Prochnik, Literary Review“Until the legal resolution of their ownership in 2019, very few [of Kafka’s drawings] were seen by the public. Now Yale has revealed them all, publishing the complete catalogue raisonné.”—David Hayden, RA“A sumptuous volume. . . . As windows into Kafka’s elusive, elliptical imagination [his drawings] are fascinating.”—Robert Douglas-Fairhurst, Apollo“Fascinating and question-begging. These are wild and impromptu drawings, off the cuff, many of them in pencil. . . . What we had not expected were such bolts of fiery humour. Kafka was not always in the grip of pained self-haunting, it seems. And especially not when very young, as we see him here.”—Michael Glover, The Tablet, “Best New Art Books”“The uncanny animatedness, that which strikes us in Kafka’s prose even before we are enraptured by its depths, lives everywhere in the evidence of his hand. It lives in his cursive script, in these faces and bodies and windswept horses, in these self-portraits we encounter having somehow always known he was there, staring into us, waiting to be seen.”—Jonathan Lethem, author of The Fortress of Solitude“An important and original book. Informative and perceptive, it illuminates a side of Kafka that has hitherto scarcely been known.”—Ritchie Robertson, author of Kafka: A Very Short Introduction“Kafka, this absorbing book shows, was both artist and art-lover: inspired by Asian art, he explored line in defiance of gravity, drawing as a counterpoint to script. An intriguing volume, with Butler’s essay as the highlight.”—Katie Trumpener, Yale University

Prestel Chagall: Masters of Art
Book SynopsisMarc Chagall’s remarkable oeuvre spans a variety of media; from painting, ceramics, and stained glass to illustration, tapestry, and stage sets. This engaging examination of the artist and his life features stunning full- page illustrations of Chagall’s works, along with illuminating biographical details. On every page, Chagall’s genius with color and composition spring to life. Comparisons and contrasts are made to the works of other Fauve and Cubist artists among whom he lived and worked, as well as to the poetry of the era. Although he depicted the harsh anti-Semitism that his countrymen faced, Chagall nevertheless embraced a vision of humanism and tolerance that remains refreshingly poignant decades after his death.
