The book draws on the views of leading thinkers in tourism and considers a broad range of issues from multidisciplinary perspectives facing the tourism industry for the first time in one volume: dwindling energy, new technology, security (like war and terrorism), political economy, sustainability, and human resources. CABI Publishing Managing Events, Festivals and the Visitor

Book SynopsisThis edited text, intended to support a research-informed approach to learning and teaching, presents an array of concepts, collaborations and in-depth cases related to managing events, festivals and the visitor economy. Authors offer an array of philosophical, political, cultural, and ethical perspectives on how to achieve this across a range of contexts, from Cambodia, China, Egypt to the British cathedral city of Lincoln. Though recognising individual difference, each chapter unites in their common pursuit of supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). This is significant as utilising the UNSDGs as a normative organising framework for how we all think about, plan, and manage a 'good' visitor economy is increasingly ubiquitous. It is with this in mind that each chapter provides explicit links to the UNSDGs and policy and/or practical implications, along with a series of critical self-assessment questions to reflect on the chapter's key arguments. This collection aims to satiate what appears to be an increasing appetite of readers and students alike who seek exposure to rigorous debate in and out of the classroom.Table of Contents1: Managing the visitor economy: concepts, collaborations and cases 2: Studying the complexities of events and festivals and relationships to the visitor economy 3: Creating dementia-friendly destinations in Scotland 4: (Re)visiting spaces of home: German Heimat tourists ‘returning’ to Timisoara, Romania 5: Re-inventing ‘Ice on Whyte’: how a mature winter festival sought renewal in the visitor economy 6: Flagship attraction development and destination competitiveness: the Grand Egyptian Museum, Egypt 7: Understanding generational differences in multiple place identities and the visitor economy: the case of migrants’ descendants in China 8: Managing overtourism at UNESCO sites: the case of Angkor Wat, Cambodia 9: Locals’ satisfaction and dissatisfaction with overtourism and events in Winchester, UK 10: Assessing Malta’s overtourism 11: The impact of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games on the visitor economy: a human rights perspective 12: Collaborating with students to provide consultancy to Lincoln City football club and the visitor economy 13: Using a student as producers approach to study visitor experiences in relation to the Magna Carta Exhibition in Lincoln, UK

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisRocks of Ages: Developing Rock Art Tourism in Israel presents the findings of an interdisciplinary project aimed at safeguarding the future of this unique resource. Cultural heritage in the Negev desert region of Israel is potentially under threat from a number of social, political and economic activities such as militarization, settlement and tourism, resulting in significant environmental change. The cultural heritage and archaeology extend back at least a quarter of a million years but also include a unique engraved rock art assemblage that dates to at least 3000 BCE. These engravings form a clear association with other relic monuments including prehistoric and protohistoric settlements, agricultural and irrigation regimes, and the remnants of a nomadic way of life. But how can this unique cultural heritage survive in the long-term? In December 2017, an international conference was held at Mitzpe Ramon attended by academics, heritage professionals and individuals from the tourism industry. The meeting centered on the dissemination of the findings from the Integrative Multilateral Planning to Advance Rock Art Tourism (IMPART) research project. Formed from an interdisciplinary team of Israeli-Italian scholars, the IMPART researchers collaborated to conduct archaeo-ecological and socio-touristic research with the goal of establishing an authoritative set of sustainable best practices for effectively valorizing Negev rock art. Based on the successful outcome of this research dynamic, the book is organized into 12 thought-provoking chapters that identify and analyze the cultural heritage, archaeology and tourism geographies that fill the multilayered Negev landscape. The focus throughout is to find ways to preserve this unique heritage for future generations while striking a balance between these fragile resources and the pressures for development of the desert.Table of ContentsForeword – Steven A. • The Politics of Religious Tourism

CABI Publishing The Politics of Religious Tourism

Book SynopsisAddressing a dearth of literature in this area, this book provides a comprehensive overview and framework of study of the politics of religious tourism. Existing work shows awareness that politics is present but the approach has been one of benign neglect, and/or a priori assumptions about the role of politics in the management of sacred sites. Previous literature is fragmented into various perspectives and approaches that best serve different disciplinary interests. By understanding the politics of religious tourism through the various perspectives and approaches from the discipline of political science, law, public policy, and other fields, this book: Focuses on how power is exercised regarding religious tourism. Looks at the governing institutions of religious tourism including the role of relevant governmental bodies such as ministries of tourism or national tourism boards, ministries of religion and/or culture. Covers the role and influence of religious governing institutions, such as state-supported church/mosque officials, and universities. This book will be of great interest to researchers and students of religious tourism, pilgrimage, as well as related subjects such as political science, economics, sociology, tourism, law studies, and religious studies.

  • The New Spirit of Hospitality: Designing Tourism

Emerald Publishing Limited The New Spirit of Hospitality: Designing Tourism

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA ‘new spirit of hospitality’ beckons planetary provenances of leisure and pleasure, to promote tourism destinations through the digitization and cinematic advertising of tourist experience. While releasing identities, populations, and environments from their geographical and political isolation, this new spirit may rob them of their ability to communicate cultural diversity on their own terms. Such changes also affect the professionals who produce aesthetic renditions of other people’s home territories as tourist destinations, often feeding into domestic perceptions of homemaking, with various good and bad consequences for the design of sustainable planetary futures. Through methodological elaborations on case studies, Tzanelli explains that we have entered a new era of tourism and hospitality mobilities dominated by crises of cultural representation and host presence. Triggered by the urge to renovate concept design, the crisis leads to a proliferation of what is just, true, and real, with various consequences for those interest groups involved in the production of truthfulness, justice and reality in hospitality and tourism. The Tourism Security-Safety and Post Conflict Destinations series provides an insightful guide for policy makers, specialists and social scientists interested in the future of tourism in a society where uncertainness, anxiety and fear prevail.Trade ReviewTzanelli disturbs the normative premises on which much tourism and hospitality research are predicated to make space for imaginations whereby the represented can manage their representations, and destination design is co-developed with more just digital technologies. -- Dorina-Maria Buda, Nottingham Trend Business School, UKTzanelli goes beyond the co-ordinates of contemporary cultural theory to contextualise a new “atmospheric” ethos in tourism markets. All of this grounded in a Marxist appreciation of the relation of space to labour and, perhaps the most innovative focus of the book, on the notion of worldmaking borrowed from Hollinshead and deployed here to organise the appearances (another mode of spirit, etymologically justified in Marx’s terminology) of tourism in case studies. As cases, however, these studies are saturated in an astute appreciation of theoretical confluence, from Derridean spectres and hospitality to Hardt and Negri’s Empire, to Boltanski and Chiapello, Žižek, Sewell, that guy Hutnyk and the classics – Hegel, Nietzsche, Arendt. The book narrates a necessary movement from crisis to justice, designing places for care and reviving a new hospitality in an always open-ended inquiry. It will allow you to travel to your own conclusions, taking or leaving the many stops on the way as possible swelling-places or refreshment. Theoretical tourism has rarely been done with such vigour. A fabulous, fun, and flagrantly phantasmagoric read. -- John Hutnyk, Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam.Table of ContentsIntroduction. Travels to Post-Truth Worlds Chapter 1. Book SynopsisOver the last decade, the concept of dark tourism has attracted growing academic interest and media attention. Nevertheless, perspectives on and understanding of dark tourism remain varied and theoretically fragile whilst, to date, no single book has attempted to draw together the conceptual themes and debates surrounding dark tourism, to explore it within wider disciplinary contexts and to establish a more informed relationship between the theory and practice of dark tourism. This book meets the undoubted need for such a volume by providing a contemporary and comprehensive analysis of dark tourism.Trade ReviewIn this perspective-broadening text, Sharpley and Stone (and their fellow observers of the prominence of sites of death and disaster) shine informed light on the rich but undersuspected connectivities of tourism. The dark and unquenchable business of thanatourism is colourfully and critically painted in arrestive shades of cultural, political, and public significance. -- Keith Hollinshead, Professor of Public Culture,Tourism Studies, The Business School, University of Bedfordshire, UKThe book would be a fine addition to any tourism library and would be of interest to heritage planners and managers, tourism researchers, and graduate or senior undergraduate tourism students. * Paul F. Wilkinson, York University, Canada in e-Review of Tourism Research, Vol. 8, No. 1, 2010 *Dark tourism is a subject area that has seen substantial growth in academic attention over the past decade, beginning with Foley and Lennon's (2000) Dark Tourism: The Attraction of Death and Disaster (2000). This new text is thus the latest in a growing body of literature. The quality of research and the depth of thought that has gone into the study of this phenomenon over the past decade are fascinating. The Darker Side of Travel: The Theory and Practice of Dark Tourism illustrates how research in this area has moved from the simple theoretical development and case studies presented in Foley and Lennon to an understanding the development and management of dark tourism sites. * Wayne William Smith, College of Charleston, USA. Book SynopsisIn this volume leading experts from different disciplines and diverse geographic regions discuss fundamental, often controversial topics in the field of tourism studies. The book attempts to understand, identify and analyse some of the perennial problems and challenges encountered by tourism researchers. The debates include topics such as the concept of the ‘tourist’, the long-term sustainability of tourism development, the growth of volunteer tourism and the vulnerability of tourism. Bringing together the collective wisdom of 37 renowned tourism scholars in a unique format, this is an important text for undergraduate and postgraduate students, tourism researchers and industry professionals.Trade ReviewThis book grabs your attention by probing into several of tourism's most intriguing and lively debates. It brings together contributions by leading tourism researchers about several of the subject's more important tensions, dilemmas, ambiguities and disputed relationships. It succeeds in encouraging readers to think more deeply and in more nuanced ways about tourism. -- Bill Bramwell, Emeritus Professor, Sheffield Hallam University, UKIn this stimulating volume, 37 leading scholars explore 11 carefully identified conceptual and definitional paradoxes of tourism. The juxtaposition of propositions with counter-arguments provides the reader with different perspectives and with highly focused insights into the knottiest of tourism problems. The search by the editor, Professor TV Singh, for scholarly convergence is challenging, worthwhile and rewarding. -- Brian King, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong KongThe first strength is the focus of the volume. It is not ‘‘everything tourism” and that is arguably a good thing. The coverage of topics is oriented towards tourist experience, tourism development, and planning issues with a solid substrate about sustainability (...) A second strength of the work lies in its educational value. The topics covered could serve a tourism development and planning course very well. Initial context statements, concluding remarks, and discussion questions reinforce the value of the work for students. -- Philip L. Pearce, James Cook University, Australia * Annals of Tourism Research 61 (2016) 268–278 *The book serves as a highly welcome collection of texts that help us to understand these well-selected research challenges and related nuances. We look forward to the next ‘fruits’. -- Jarkko Saarinen, University of Oulu, Finland * Annals of Leisure Research, 2016 *This book will provide the reader with an interesting insight into various tourism challenges. These are united under the umbrella of 11 theme-based chapters, which are discussed and debated across a total of 40 papers. The titles of the themes very well reflect some of the key issues of the multidisciplinary nature of tourism research. Although the editor is right in acknowledging that the first chapters are more appropriate for those at the beginning of their tourism careers (being either academic- or business-oriented), I would like to add that these are a must-read also for established researchers and practitioners, since here and then we all need to be reminded of the origin of the concepts we usually take for granted. -- Tina Šegota, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia * e-Review of Tourism Research (eRTR), Vol.12, No. 5/6 2015 *The book is an accessible, well-organised, informative, and sets itself apart from other tourism issue volumes because of its unique methodology. There is critical insight here, and it is reassuring that many of the authors not only call for change, but attempt to point us in the direction for change. -- David A. Based on these considerations, future turning points are identified and evaluated. The volume provides a continuum between the past and future of tourism. Its central themes are the globalisation of tourism; the development of destinations; the importance of mobility and transport; the development of the modern hotel; the diversification of niche tourism and the conceptualisation of the past and future of tourism using the evolutionary paradigm in future studies. The core findings of the book provide the first perspective on how the history of tourism will shape its future.Trade ReviewAnother masterpiece from the formidable pair Yeoman and McMahon-Beattie tracing the histories of tourism through tipping points for us to learn lessons for the future. Book SynopsisThis is the first book to apply the concept of ‘contents tourism’ in a global context and to establish an international and interdisciplinary framework for contents tourism research. The term ‘contents tourism’ gained official recognition in Japan when it was defined by the Japanese government in 2005, and it has been characterised as ‘travel behaviour motivated fully or partially by narratives, characters, locations, and other creative elements of popular culture forms including film, television dramas, manga, anime, novels and computer games’. The book builds on previous research from Japan and explores three main themes of contents tourism: ‘the Contentsization of Literary Worlds’, ‘Tourist Behaviours at “Sacred Sites” of Contents Tourism’ and ‘Contents Tourism as Pilgrimage’ and draws together these key themes to propose a set of policy implications for achieving successful and sustainable contents tourism in the 21st century.Trade ReviewIn this volume, an international group of scholars rewrites the old canon of ‘contents tourism’ with impressive cultural sensitivity. Across several chapters exploring aspects of Japanese popular culture’s adherence to performance and visuality, native phenomena are examined as instances of transnational hybridisation and global cultural connectivity. An essential read for students of international popular culture, tourism and the moving image. * Rodanthi Tzanelli, University of Leeds, UK *This book reconceptualises the largely compartmentalised views of media-tourism relationships, such as film and literary tourism, advancing and encapsulating them within the socialising frame of contents tourism. The authors provide engaging insights into the formation, curation and (re)crafting of media-related narratives, variously bonding communities, media, tourists and places across the different contexts. These insights provoke new interpretations and considerations, which will benefit anyone studying contents tourism (or any tourism-media relationship). * Glen Croy, Monash University, Australia *This important book expands the concept of contents tourism, which has so far been limited mainly to the Japanese context, and shows its transnational and transmedial potential. Case studies from different cultural contexts, which refer to enthusiasm for literature, theatre, folklore or anime, illustrate the variety of paths the imagination can take – and how imaginary journeys become real tourism. * Elisabeth Scherer, University of Düsseldorf, Germany *Contents tourism is among the very few productive new ideas that has emerged in tourism studies in the past several decades. The authors in this important volume capture the dynamics of the emotional and symbolic connection of tourists to the places they visit. The chapters prove the promise of contents tourism beyond studies of the mise en scene of Japanese anime where it originated. * Dean MacCannell, Emeritus Professor, University of California, Davis, USA *This book further contributes to academia as it clarifies the term ‘contents tourism’, broadens this term from the Japanese context to a global context, links literature and tourism from a ‘contentsization’ point of view, and focuses on mediarelated narratives in tourism. From a qualitative-research point of view, the authors have contributed to this growing field of contents tourism by building their argumentation on different qualitative methods, as the following analysis illustrates. -- Zafer Öter, İzmir Katip Çelebi University, Turkey * Journal of Qualitative Research in Tourism, Vol. 2, No. 1, 2021 *This book contributes greatly to our understanding of the role of popular culture and its contents for the contemporary global tourism landscape [and] provides a fresh perspective that will hopefully decrease the fragmentation of existing related research while making especially Japanese research in this area more accessible to English-speaking academia. -- Ina Reichenberger, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand * Journal of Tourism Futures, Vol. 7 No. 1, 2021 *This collection of essays examines the phenomenon of "contents tourism" within a global context [...] In all cases, content is the unifying element of analysis rather than the platform. This interesting construct utilizes the content itself as the focus/motivator of tourism rather than the individual modality of presentation (e.g., film, theater). This is a readable, interesting, and informative study. -- S. A. Schulman, CUNY Baruch College, USA * CHOICE, Vol. 58 No. 4, Dec 2020 *Table of ContentsForeword. Sue Beeton Introduction. Book SynopsisThis book examines the lifestyles, expectations and plans of Millennials and Generation Z and how they are redefining tourism. It demonstrates that if the tourism industry is to enjoy future growth, it must understand and meet the particular needs of these two generations. The volume explores the present and future challenges faced by the tourism industry as a result of the generational turnover, and seeks to answer the following questions: What contribution can the new generations make to the future of tourism? How are technological advancements and social networks shaping future travel trends? Can a generational perspective be useful to help the tourism industry recover from the COVID-19 crisis? The book will be of interest to researchers and students of sociology and tourism studies, as well as tourism professionals.Trade ReviewThis volume places the youngest travellers at the core of scientific reflection. Applying a generational approach to the study of tourism and elaborating on technologies, the sharing economy and gender issues in tourism, it is a timely and useful resource capturing some significant peculiarities that will shape the future of tourism. * Marina Novelli, University of Brighton, UK *This book employs sociological thought to provide a novel approach to understanding the connection between the intersectionality of past, present, and future trends in tourism. The authors present an insightful ‘snapshot’ of our current times and highlight how several external trends such as technological advances, security challenges, economic issues, and pandemic disasters are fundamentally transforming tourism beyond the tourist gaze to ultimately shape and reshape the tourism experience and the future of travel for Millennials and Gen Zers. * DeMond Miller, Rowan University, USA *[The authors] provide a timely text on research surrounding the younger generations and how they choose to engage with tourism [...] One of the most attractive aspects of this book is the potential for future research on generational impacts for tourism, especially considering the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors do a marvelous job suggesting key avenues of research inquiry. Libraries with tourism collections centered on intergenerational studies, international tourism, and social tourism should acquire this book. * K.M. Book SynopsisWhat does the proliferation of food festival tell us about rural areas? How can these celebrations pave the way to a better future for the local communities? This book is addressing these questions contributing to the ongoing debate about the future of rural peripheries in Europe. The volume is based on the ethnographic research conducted in Italy, a country internationally known for its food tradition and one of the European countries where the gap between rural and urban space is most pronounced. It offers an anthropological analysis of food festivals, exploring the transformational role they have to change and develop rural communities. Although the festivals aim mostly at tourism, they contribute in a wider way to the life of the rural communities, acting as devices through which a community redefines itself, reinforces its sociality, reshapes the perception and use of the surrounding environment. In so doing, thus, the books suggests to read the festivals not just as celebrations driven by food fashion, but rather fundamental grassroots instruments to contrast the effects of rural marginalization and pave the way to a possible better future for the communityTable of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction: Rural marginality and its development.- Chapter 2: Food festivals and the Italian foodscape.- Chapter 3: Food festivals as identity devices.- Chapter 4: Food festivals as political devices.- Chapter 5: Food festivals as economic devices.- Chapter 6: Conclusions: Food festivals as development devices.

Book SynopsisOrphanage tourism is where tourist interactions with 'orphaned' children are central to traveller itineraries and experience making in less-developed contexts. While appealing to the desire of tourists and volunteers to 'do good' while travelling, underlining orphanage tourism is the fact that the vast majority of children (over 80%) in orphanages and allied care institutions are not orphans. Instead, children are often placed in institutions due to poverty and hardship, and as victims of human trafficking. In some cases, orphanages can be for-profit enterprises, where the commodification of good intentions begins and becomes embedded in the tourism supply chain. Children are becoming tourist attractions and the focus of tourist consumption, leading to orphanages as sites of tourism production and consumption. The first of its kind, this book highlights exploratory research that examines the links between modern slavery practices and orphanage tourism. Contributors include academics and practitioners with a long engagement in advocacy for the rights and protection of children and research into sustainable and responsible tourism. Written in an accessible manner that appeals to a broad audience. This book will appeal to researchers interested in the areas of tourism, human geography, development studies, childhood studies, law and social justice, as well as those interested in responsible and sustainable travel. Practitioners, policy makers and civil society groups working at the vanguard of tourism expansion and communities in less-developed contexts - particularly where labour rights transgressions, human exploitation and trafficking are prevalent - will also find the book insightful. Royalties from the sales of this book will be donated to Save the Children Australia and the Forget Me Not Foundation.Table of ContentsPart I: Orphanage Tourism, Modern Slavery and Convention on the Rights of the Child Chapter 1: Orphanage Tourism and the Convention on the Rights of the Child Chapter 2: Orphanages as sites of Modern Slavery Chapter 3: Historical and socio-political drivers of Australian participation in orphanage tourism in Bali Part II: Institutionalisation Chapter 4: People, money and resources: The drivers of institutionalisation Chapter 5: Promising Practices: Strengthening families and systems to prevent and reduce the institutional care of children Part III: Voluntourism Chapter 6: What drives voluntourism? Book SynopsisOver the last decades, tourism has become a key sector in the world economy: its contribution to balance of payments, incomes and employment has significantly increased over time. While in 1950 international tourism receipts totaled about 2 billion dollars, by 2006 this value had reached 735 billion dollars -- about 2 billion dollars a day (World Tourism Barometer, 2007). Nowadays, the sector originates more than one third of world exports of services and over 70% of those in the poorest countries (European Commission, 2007). Tourism is therefore an important driver of growth and prosperity and, particularly within developing countries, the sector is also important for poverty reduction (World Economic Forum, 2007). Mainly dominated by small-medium enterprises, tourism accounts for 4% of the Euro Area''s GDP, with about two million enterprises employing about 4% of the total labour force (approximately eight million jobs). When linkages to other sectors are considered, the contribution of tourism to GDP increases to about 11%, and the employment rate reaches about 12%, creating about 24 million jobs. Besides incomes and jobs, tourism has fostered development in the vast majority of European regions; infrastructures built for tourism reasons contribute to local development, and jobs are created or preserved even in areas suffering industrial or rural decline or experiencing urban regeneration (European Commission, 2007). This book provides new research on tourism development from around the globe.

Book SynopsisAny realistic understanding of contemporary tourism in the 21st century must be grounded in a context of the dynamics of capitalist globalisation. Sociologist Leslie Sklair''s conceptualisation of capitalist globalisation and its dynamics as expressed in his "sociology of the global system" (2002) is employed to understand the corporatised tourism phenomenon and explain the resistance that it sparks. This discussion explains how a corporatised tourism sector has been created by transnational tourism and travel corporations, professionals in the travel and tourism sector, transnational practices such as the liberalisation being imposed through the General Agreement on Trade in Services negotiations and the culture-ideology of consumerism that tourists have adopted. These institutions, agents and processes have created a self-reinforcing system built upon growth dynamics and ever higher profit accumulation. This system reaps profits for industry and exclusive holidays for privileged tourists, but generates social and ecological costs which inspire vigorous challenge and resistance. Perhaps the most significant manifestation of this resistance is the coalition of the justice tourism movement which is seeking to replace the system of corporatised tourism with a more just, socially-concerned and sustainable tourism system. Such events suggest that the long-term future of tourism will be subject to macro-level tensions and challenges which forward-thinking tourism management will need to heed cautiously.

Though the United States remained the world''s top travel destination by dollar value, spending by foreign visitors in the country plunged 15% in 2009. Travel and tourism, which account for 6% of U.S. employment, began to rebound in 2010, but there have been concerns about a possible decline in business along the Gulf Coast due to the April 2010 BP oil spill. Book SynopsisThe application of market segmentation techniques is long established in the tourism and hospitality literature. Various methods have been proposed for dividing market segments into homogeneous or distinct groupings with regard to socio-demographic, travel characteristic, psychographic, geographic and behavioural characteristics. In the present study, nationality (cultural differences) in combination with visitor demographics and travel characteristics were used to investigate the similarities and differences of international tourists from China and the USA with regards to their perception towards the Vietnamese service provider''s attributes and performances. The results have shown that there are more differences than similarities between the two samples in terms of cultural values and perceptions.

Book SynopsisFreedom of poverty is a universal human prerogative and right. Hence the tackling of poverty in developing countries is a social obligation for governments, MNCs and MNOs at a national, intergovernmental and supra-national level especially with its institutionalisation within the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Tourism was a sector that was actively promoted by the above mentioned institutions in order to act as a catalyst for development and poverty reduction. Nevertheless in the course of times tourism did not deliver the expected result: poverty reduction. Hence this book embarks on exploring, by adopting a participatory approach to research, the extent to which the various controlling interests'', external (development agencies) and internal (government institutions), dictate and influence tourism development in the ex-colonial geographical areas under investigation and their relationships with various community constituents - mainly those in the local communities at the grass-roots level.

Book SynopsisThis book presents an ethnography of nature walks in a rural area of Paraná state, southern Brazil. The event is organised by government agencies responsible for implementing public policies for farming, tourism, the environment and culture, as well as by the local community of small farmers. However, a deeper inquiry into the layers of experiences and practices accumulated over the history of human walking reveals a multiplicity of lines interwoven into this event. Over the course of this book, the authors have presented different aspects and epistemological consequences of the phrase "walking is knowing".
