Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Uncovering Fashion: Fashion Communications Across the Media
Book SynopsisThe dynamics of fashion depends on visuals: when we see something we like, we respond to its color, line, form, and eye-appeal. In that sense, fashion communicates itself-without words, without added graphics. But the world of fashion demands much more than the mere presence of garments and accessories and footwear. It involves a wide range of communications, including words-printed, spoken, and electronically transmitted. Those words may serve alone, or they may be paired with images and designs that enhance and illustrate their meaning. This text takes a systematic approach to uncovering fashion to reveal the industry's underlying network of communications. The term "fashion communications" refers not only to monthly fashion magazines, but also to every facet of information relating to fashion-from the names of colors at the dye factory, to the latest runway reviews posted on fashion Web sites. Focusing on four key areas-manufacturing; business; sales and advertising; and representation in the media-Wolbers uses a who-what-wherewhen- why approach. As Professor Horacek so eloquently states in her Foreword, "this book is truly a must for fashion programs anywhere or for anyone who seeks to develop and hone their communication skills." Features -- Specific assignments and exercises designed for both inside and outside the classroom to help students master the unique language of fashion -- Profiles of various forms of fashion communications related to the content of each chapter -- Tips and guidelines for efficient research and information presentations -- Personal Profiles in each chapter support material in text -- Additional assignments and projects, along with samples of grading rubrics to assist instructors -- Instructor's Guide contains tips on how to use the text in a variety of different courses, including fashion journalism, business communication, or other fashion courses -- PowerPoint presentation availableTable of ContentsContents: Fashion Communications-A Layered Look Fashion Information from the Inside Out Understanding Raw Materials Laboring for Fashion: Influences from the Industry The Business End Details, Details Becoming Fashion Out There for All to See Representation in the Popular Media The Big C: Creativity Evolution of the Fashion Magazine Dynamic Wording-The Art of Describing Fashion Visuals That Speak "With This Page (Ad, Script, or Whatever!), I Thee Wed"

Sagamore Publishing Pastimes: The Context of Contemporary Leisure
Book SynopsisThis sixth edition reflects almost 40 years of scholarship as well as professional and personal practice in recreation, parks, and tourism. The text has become one of the most widely adopted titles in university courses worldwide. In this new edition of the book, the phenomenon of leisure is presented through new research findings and contemporary societal dilemmas to suggest that leisure is one of the most interesting, relevant, and exciting subjects of study today. The book reflects a wide range of material from the disciplines of leisure studies, sociology, psychology, economics, political science, anthropology, geography, the humanities, and media and cultural studies. Indeed, more than a textbook, this is very much a point of view. Leisure is presented as a human phenomenon that is individual and collective, vital and frivolous, historical and contemporary, factual and subjective, and good and bad. As a learning tool, this sixth edition teaches more. It contains updated and new illustrations of concepts through field-based cases, biographical features, exploratory activities, and research studies. In the first part, leisure is defined as a condition of humanity. Its meanings are traced through the humanities and history, as well as in todays connotations. The benefits of leisure are presented, ranging from freedom to pleasure to risk to spirituality, and leisures benefit to healthful well-being is demonstrated. As well, part one of the text presents theories for explaining leisure behavior. Part Two discusses leisure as a cultural mirror -- its societal context. Chapters include leisure and anthropology, geography, technology, popular culture, and taboo recreation. Finally, in Part Three, the functional side of leisure is explored in terms of its instrumental relationship to work, money, time, and equity. Leisure systems of public, private, and commercial sponsorship are described to confirm leisures utility. Instructor resources and a website for student resources available.

Sagamore Publishing Recreation Business: Strategies for Success
Book SynopsisRecreation Business: Strategies for Success is a conversation about leisure-based businesses for classroom and online courses. From the point of view of a senior scholar who has studied leisure and its social contexts for 5 decades, Kelly begins by introducing the scope and variety of recreation businesses and discusses major issues in the field. Then he turns toward social and behavioral science research about recreation and leisure that has been developed since 1970, answering the question, how does this research guide and direct the beginning and operation of a recreation business? Throughout the book, Kelly encourages dialogue and learning through questions, cases, research ideas, debates, online resources, and more. The beginning is that leisure is different. The focus is on what a recreation business sells or rents: an experience. The crucial element is quality. And decades of study have yielded a lot of insight into how leisure experiences can be raised to a level that will attract and retain clients. John R. (Jack) Kelly

Temple University Press,U.S. Muhammad Ali: The Making of an Icon
Book SynopsisMuhammad Ali (born Cassius Clay) has always engendered an emotional reaction from the public. From his appearance as an Olympic champion to his iconic status as a national hero, his carefully constructed image and controversial persona have always been intensely scrutinized. In Muhammad Ali, Michael Ezra considers the boxer who calls himself "The Greatest" from a new perspective. He writes about Ali's pre-championship bouts, the management of his career and his current legacy, exploring the promotional aspects of Ali and how they were wrapped up in political, economic, and cultural "ownership." Ezra's incisive study examines the relationships between Ali's cultural appeal and its commercial manifestations. Citing examples of the boxer's relationship to the Vietnam War and the Nation of Islam-which serve as barometers of his "public moral authority"-Muhammad Ali analyzes the difficulties of creating and maintaining these cultural images, as well as the impact these themes have on Ali's meaning to the public.Trade Review“Muhammad Ali is a terrific book. Nova Science Publishers Inc Who Regulates Whom: U.S. Finanial Oversight
Book SynopsisFederal financial regulation in the United States has evolved through a series of piecemeal responses to developments and crises in financial markets. This book provides an overview of current U.S. financial regulation: which agencies are responsible for which institutions and markets, and what kinds of authority they have. Banking regulation is largely based on a quid pro quo that was adopted in response to widespread bank failures. Federal securities regulation is based on the principle of disclosure, rather than direct regulation. Derivatives trading is supervised by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which oversees trading on the futures exchanges, which have self-regulatory responsibilities as well. There is also a large over-the-counter (off-exchange) derivatives market that is largely unregulated. The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) oversees a group of government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) -- public/private hybrid firms that seek both to earn profits and to further the policy objectives set out in their statutory charters. No federal agency has jurisdiction over trading in foreign exchange or U.S. Treasury securities; non-bank lenders fall outside the regulatory umbrella; and hedge funds, private equity firms, and venture capital investors are largely unregulated (although their transactions in securities and derivatives markets may be).

Book SynopsisParks and recreation systems have evolved in remarkable ways over the past two decades. No longer just playgrounds and ballfields, parks and open spaces have become recognised as essential green infrastructure with the potential to contribute to community resiliency and sustainability. To capitalise on this potential, the parks and recreation system planning process must evolve as well. In Parks and Recreation System Planning, David Barth provides a new, step-by-step approach to creating parks systems that generate greater economic, social, and environmental benefits. Barth first advocates that parks and recreation systems should no longer be regarded as isolated facilities, but as elements of an integrated public realm. Each space should be designed to generate multiple community benefits. Next, he presents a new approach for parks and recreation planning that is integrated into community-wide issues. Chapters outline each step, evaluating existing systems, implementing a carefully crafted plan, and more, necessary for creating a successful, adaptable system. Throughout the book, he describes initiatives that are creating more resilient, sustainable, and engaging parks and recreation facilities, drawing from his experience consulting in more than 100 communities across the U.S. Parks and Recreation System Planning meets the critical need to provide an up-to-date, comprehensive approach for planning parks and recreation systems across the country. Nova Science Publishers Inc More Than Simply Corporate Social Responsibility:
Book SynopsisFreedom of poverty is a universal human prerogative and right. Hence the tackling of poverty in developing countries is a social obligation for governments, MNCs and MNOs at a national, intergovernmental and supra-national level especially with its institutionalisation within the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Nevertheless in the course of times tourism did not deliver the expected result: poverty reduction. Hence this book embarks on exploring, by adopting a participatory approach to research, the extent to which the various controlling interests'', external (development agencies) and internal (government institutions), dictate and influence tourism development in the ex-colonial geographical areas under investigation and their relationships with various community constituents - mainly those in the local communities at the grass-roots level.

Book SynopsisA democratic society is grounded on the informed participation of the citizenry, which in turn requires access to Government information. If officials are to be accountable for their actions and decisions, secrecy must be kept to the minimum necessary to meet legitimate national security considerations. An open documentary record of official decisions is essential to educate and inform the public and enable it to assess the policies of its elected leaders. While agencies need to modernise and improve overall records management performance, classified records pertaining to our nation''s security demand particular attention. Current practices for handling classification, declassification, and management of these records are outmoded, unsustainable, and keep too much information from the public. This book takes a look at transforming the security classification system and improving declassification efforts across government agencies.
