  • Canal Boat Lives

    Amberley Publishing Canal Boat Lives

    1 in stock

Britain’s canals were largely built during the Industrial Revolution to move goods around the country. In time, this network linked the major cities, taking the narrowboats and their cargoes into the heart of urban areas. Today, the canals have been largely converted to leisure use but growing numbers of people are also turning to canals as places to live. Today’s increasingly expensive and dense housing has meant that many are finding the delights of canal boat living as an alternative. Close to open spaces and nature even in the heart of the city, with its own sense of community, living on a canal boat has become an attractive way of life for many. In this book photographer Gill Shaw celebrates the variety of people living on canals today. Through photographs and their own words, this fascinating window into a different way of life will appeal to all those who would like to know more about Britain’s canal-side inhabitants.

  • The Glorious Years of the LMS: London, Midland and Scottish Railway

Great Northern Books Ltd The Glorious Years of the LMS: London, Midland and Scottish Railway

    1 in stock

One hundred years have passed from the formation of the largest British railway company – the London Midland & Scottish Railway. This was also the biggest transport concern in the world at the time. The LMSR was able to serve passengers and customers to a high standard up to the Second World War. During the conflict the LMSR made a valuable contribution to the war effort in terms of motive power provision, movement of goods and war materials. The Glorious Years of the LMS examines the company over the period 1923-1947 using over 250 high-quality black-and-white images. These are split into several sections: locomotives; carriages; war work; road vehicles; stations. The LMSR’s territory spread across much of England, Scotland and into Wales and the photographs have been taken at a number of locations. These include stations, lineside, sheds and workshops. Several companies constituted the LMSR, including the London & North Western Railway, Midland Railway, Caledonian Railway, Glasgow & South Western Railway, etc. Locomotives from these are included in the collection, alongside those of Sir Henry Fowler – Royal Scot 4-6-0, 4P 4-4-0, etc. – and Sir William Stanier. The latter’s designs are most associated with the LMSR and include Jubilee 4-6-0, Class 5 4-6-0, 8F 2-8-0, Princess Royal and Coronation Class Pacifics. The LMSR was an early pioneer of steel-panelled coaching stock and also experimented with different types of carriages – cocktail bar, club car, lounge. Luxurious sets were built for the Royal Scot and Coronation Scot named trains, whilst the company provided new Royal Train saloons in the early 1940s. At the time of Grouping, road transport was increasing and the LMSR was keen to keep the competition at bay. A fleet of nearly 30,000 vehicles was developed, ranging from horse-drawn drays to vans, lorries and specialised trucks, particularly for containerised traffic. The LMSR also branched into bus services. The LMSR existed for just 25 years and during that time the company, the officers and employees were able to create a lasting legacy of hard work, achievement and innovation.

  • Victoria's Railway King: Sir Edward Watkin, One of the Victorian Era's Greatest Entrepreneurs and Visionaries

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Victoria's Railway King: Sir Edward Watkin, One of the Victorian Era's Greatest Entrepreneurs and Visionaries

    1 in stock

The accomplishments, and initiatives, both social and economic, of Edward Watkin are almost too many to relate. Though generally known for his large-scale railway projects, becoming chairman of nine different British railway companies as well as developing railways in Canada, the USA, Greece, India and the Belgian Congo, he was also responsible for a stream of remarkable projects in the nineteenth century which helped shape people's lives inside and outside Britain. As well as holding senior positions with the London and North Western Railway, the Worcester and Hereford Railway and the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway, Watkin became president of the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada. He was also director of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Railways, as well as the Athens-Piraeus Railway. Watkin was also the driving force in the creation of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway's 'London Extension' - the Great Central Main Line down to Marylebone in London. This, though, was only one part of his great ambition to have a high-speed rail link from Manchester to Paris and ultimately to India. This, of course, involved the construction of a Channel tunnel. Work on this began on both sides of the Channel in 1880 but had to be abandoned due to the fear of invasion from the Continent. He also purchased an area of Wembley Park, serviced by an extension of his Metropolitan Railway. He developed the park into a pleasure and events destination for urban Londoners, which later became the site of Wembley Stadium. It was also the site of another of Watkin's enterprises, the 'Great Tower in London' which was designed to be higher than the Eiffel Tower but was never completed. Little, though, is known about Watkin's personal life, which is explored here through the surviving diaries he kept. The author, who is the chair of The Watkin Society, which aims to promote Watkin's life and achievements, has delved into the mind of one of the nineteenth century's outstanding individuals.

Successful immediately, the S2000 models defended Honda's honour on the tracks, but it was in the showrooms where the S2000 excelled. Amberley Publishing Hong Kong Buses and Trams 1976–1997: The Final British Years

    1 in stock

Hong Kong has long been a place of great interest to transport enthusiasts. Its mixture of predominantly British-built buses operating in a bustling south China setting holds endless fascination while Hong Kong Tramways’ 1920s-style tramcars evoke past times in an ultra-modern setting. Changes to Hong Kong’s bus and tram scene during the final twenty-one years of British rule are recounted and illustrated in this book. Included are the decline of the China Motor Bus Company’s operations and the emergence of Citybus Limited as a major player. Vehicles of the Kowloon Motor Bus Company, which claimed to be the world’s largest privately owned bus company operating in a single city, are depicted at various locations including the New Territories. Bus and light rail transit operations of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation are illustrated as are buses of Argos Bus Services, the Motor Transport Company of Guangdong and Hong Kong, the New Lantao Bus Company, Public Light Buses, Stagecoach (Hong Kong) Limited and operations of the Peak Tramways Company. This book includes pictures of some of the many hundreds of second-hand buses from British operators, such as London Transport, Ribble and Southdown, which were imported into Hong Kong from the 1970s onwards.

After publishing Scent Magic, an acclaimed memoir of plants, gardens and scent, Isabel Bannerman couldn’t leave the subject alone. ‘I came across the star-nosed mole, an adorable and preposterous creature with a highly specialized sensory-motor organ, while writing about the riches of the soil kingdom … and, somewhat mole-like … as I was trying to write about the impossibility of writing effectively about smell, I began to nose around for great writers’ solutions to this problem. How and how much have writers considered the lilies of the field and how they smell. I began grazing on literature and gathering in my stores of quotes.’ In reviews of Scent Magic, Isabel was lauded for ‘putting into words what so much escapes language. With a wonderful range of reference and allusion, it's nothing less than poetry... (Evening Standard)’. And in this anthology, with her beautifully written linking passages bringing carefully chosen quotations together with her dramatic, powerful and mysterious plant images, she evokes the scented garden through poetry and prose spanning millennia, from Ovid to Proust, Milton to George Eliot, and Emily Dickinson to Alice Oswald.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Britain s Changing Train Liveries: Four Decades of Change

    1 in stock

Railway liveries play an important role in establishing much-valued recognition of the many operating companies through the variety of colours worn by their trains which ply our British railways. These reinforce the pride that their uniform bestows. This is demonstrated by the immaculate designs which adorned the Pre-grouping steam locomotives through to the stamp of Network South East which certainly raised the profile of many ordinary commuter trains, at least around London and the Home Counties. Similarly, it is a quality which is especially evident in the ubiquitous all-pervading British Railways blue era, which now features as an essential ingredient in diesel preservation, as also in a multitude of colours and futuristic designs bestowed by the contemporary privatised passenger and freight companies. Furthermore, consider the appeal of retro liveries which decorate some of the locomotives hauling charter trains, a trend which reinforces the popularity of liveries which were once merely part of the mundane everyday scene. Any glimpse through the news reviews and photographs published in monthly railway magazines will reveal such a kaleidoscope of colours adorning the locomotives and rolling stock which traverse the UK's modern and preserved railways. This book endeavours to facilitate a brief overview of some of these liveries in the hope that it will whet the readers' appetite to explore their own world of railway liveries.

  • The Supersonic BONE: A Development and Operational History of the B-1 Bomber

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Supersonic BONE: A Development and Operational History of the B-1 Bomber

    1 in stock

When the B-52 Stratofortress entered operational service with the US Air Force in 1955, work was already underway on defining its successor. The B-70 Valkyrie, a Mach 3 jet bomber, was one option. Although two XB-70A prototypes flew, the B-70 never went into production. Out of the subsequent Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft program came the B-1A bomber, which flew at high speed and low altitude to evade enemy air defenses. The B-1A was cancelled in favor of fitting the B-52 with cruise missiles. The B-1, known as the BONE, was revived in 1981 as the improved B-1B to boost American military power and be a symbol of American strength at the peak of Cold War tensions. The B-1B entered service in 1986 with several deficiencies. The resolution of most of these issues coincided with the end of the Cold War. After the Cold War, the B-1B lost its primary nuclear mission but remained relevant by transforming into a high-speed, long-range, high-payload delivery platform for conventional precision-guided munitions. The first combat use of the B-1B was in 1998 in Iraq. The BONE has proved a highly effective combat aircraft in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and the former Yugoslavia. This superbly researched and illustrated book traces the BONE's long development and operational history in fascinating detail.

  • Shipping on the Thames and the Port of London During the 1940s 1980s: A Pictorial History

    1 in stock

During the 1970s and 1980s the Port of London, and shipping on the River Thames was in a state of transition. New methods of cargo handling, in particular the introduction of containers and Roll-on, Roll-off vehicle ferries called for new investment and a rethink on the way dock traffic was traditionally managed. As a result, The Port of London Authority decided to run down and close the various London docks and concentrate all new investment downriver at their Tilbury docks. These photographs, along with some from earlier decades, and mostly previously unpublished, are a fascinating insight into this period, when traditional ships and cargo handling methods worked alongside the new technology. Ships designed for carrying cargo in their holds were sometimes adapted to carry containers as deck cargo. There were also shipping types now lost to history, including colliers and sludge boats. Not forgotten are the passenger ships -cruise liners to ferries. The various vessels that serviced the port from tugs to salvage craft and floating cranes. Finally, the heritage craft from traditional Thames Sailing barges to former paddle steamers now adapted as floating pub/restaurants.

  • Boeing 707: Boeing's First Jetliner

Key Publishing Ltd Boeing 707: Boeing's First Jetliner

    1 in stock

The first widely used commercial jet, the Boeing 707 brought America into the 'Jet Age' of the late 1950s and created the template for worldwide air travel today. The 707 first flew on December 20, 1957, and less than a year later it made its first commercial flight from New York to Paris. Initially flown mainly by Pan American, the Boeing 707 was soon operated by both domestic and international airlines around the world, and the popularity of the aircraft led to increased development of air-traffic-control systems, airport terminals, runways and airport infrastructure. The 707 remained in production until late 1978, by which time it was too small to handle the increased passenger densities on many routes, and it was retired to make way for more-modern jetliner types. By the end of production, a total of 1,010 aircraft had been built for civil use, though many of these subsequently found their way into military service, and purpose-built military variants remained in production until 1991. This book provides a fascinating portfolio of images depicting a wide range of Boeing 707 variants in service around the world, in passenger, cargo and military use. Like the aircraft itself, the photographs, taken at airports in North, Central and South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, span the world, showcasing many of the aircraft's diverse and colourful liveries. 180 illustrations

  • The Allotment

    Little Toller Books The Allotment

    1 in stock

Allotments are sanctuaries for growing, often on the fringes of suburbia, where life is getting ever more stressful and expensive. Here, a simple urge to grow-your-own or become self-sufficient, brings us closer to a community of people, wildlife and plants that are often more diverse than the cities and towns that surround them. An allotment is a utopia. It is a green place where anyone can occupy a piece of land, and grow with freedom of expression. Allotmenteering started with The Diggers in seventeenth-century Surrey, in response to the Enclosure Acts which deprived ordinary people of access to land. But the idea spread, first across England and the British Isles, then through Europe and the world. 'The Allotment', originally published in 1988, is the classic study of allotments. Encompassing the oral recordings of plot-holders alongside descriptions of regional variations on the plot itself, such as pigeon-fancying, seed collecting or leek competitions, it looks at British society and history through the prism of allotments. With a new introduction by Olivia Laing, this is a story that is just as relevant today, and is essential for those interested in social history, land ownership and gardening in twenty-first century Britain.
