Following deregulation in 1986, the established bus operators suddenly found themselves being challenged by new independent operators, some of whom ultimately disappeared from the scene while others were swallowed up by the larger groups. After Yorkshire Rider, an arm of West Yorkshire PTE was privatised in 1988 and grew following its acquisition of former NBC subsidiary West Yorkshire Road Car Co. It was subsequently purchased by Badgerline/FirstBus, who became the dominant operator in the city. Arriva and Transdev also have a presence in Leeds. This book takes a look at all the transport developments and changes that have taken place within the city between 1986 and 2022 and, with many new liveries and vehicle types, illustrates the ever-fascinating scene.

  • The History of the London Underground Map

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The History of the London Underground Map

    1 in stock

Few transportation maps can boast the pedigree that London's iconic Tube' map can. Sported on t-shirts, keyrings, duvet covers, and most recently, downloaded an astonishing twenty million times in app form, the map remains a long-standing icon of British design and ingenuity. Hailed by the art and design community as a cultural artefact, it has also inspired other culturally important pieces of artwork, and in 2006 was voted second in BBC 2's Great British Design Test. But it almost didn't make it out of the notepad it was designed in. The story of how the Underground map evolved is almost as troubled and fraught with complexities as the transport network it represents. Mapping the Underground was not for the faint-hearted - it rapidly became a source of frustration, and in some cases obsession - often driving its custodians to the point of distraction. The solution, when eventually found, would not only revolutionise the movement of people around the city but change the way we visualise London forever. Caroline Roope's wonderfully researched book casts the Underground in a new light, placing the world's most famous transit network and its even more famous map in its wider historical and cultural context, revealing the people not just behind the iconic map, but behind the Underground's artistic and architectural heritage. From pioneers to visionaries, disruptors to dissenters - the Underground has had them all - as well as a constant stream of (often disgruntled) passengers. It is thanks to the legacy of a host of reformers that the Tube and the diagram that finally provided the key to understanding it, have endured as masterpieces of both engineering and design.

Amberley Publishing North Eastern Motorsport: A Century of Memories

    1 in stock

The North East has been a hotbed of motorsport since the early years of the last century. In this book motorsport broadcaster and journalist Larry Carter presents a selection of memorable motorsport events, competitors, venues and personalities in the region from the 1920s onwards. The circuit at Croft is justly famous, witnessing the early days of stars such as James Hunt, Barry Sheene, Niki Lauda and Wilson Fittipaldi, but the huge variety of motorsports, both cars and bikes, in the region are represented in this book, including circuit racing, rallying, rallycross and trials. The North East has spawned many great racers over the years, both men and women, some of whom died tragically young, such as motorcyclist Ken Redfern and sidecar legend Mac Hobson. Also included are famous clubs such as the Darlington & District Motor Cub and lesser-known venues at Catterick military base and Albemarle Barracks. This book is also a tribute to events that have declined or disappeared – grass track racing, sand racing on the Cleveland beaches, hill-climbs, scrambling, speedway and stock car racing. Delving through archives, Larry Carter has unearthed a fascinating collection of the most memorable motor-sporting events and achievements of the last 100 years in the North East which will appeal to all motorsport enthusiasts in the area.

  • Electric Locomotives on Britain's Railways

Amberley Publishing Electric Locomotives on Britain's Railways

    1 in stock

Before the West Coast Route electrification was completed in 1966, the electric locomotive was quite a rare beast on Britain’s railways, with the exception of the Manchester to Sheffield service that had been electrified from 1954. There were plenty of EMUs running on suburban systems around large cities and in the south of England, but otherwise steam was king. This all changed when BR announced their Modernisation plan in 1955, which envisaged that steam locos would be replaced by diesel and electric traction by around 1975. The aim was to have all the main lines and the busiest suburban services electrified using the 25,000-volt system with overhead wires rather than the third rail system used on existing electrified routes. This book of largely unpublished colour photographs by George Woods aims to show the different electric locomotive types used on the BR network since 1966, and the variety of trains that they hauled.

Yorkshire’s cosmopolitan cities are not forgotten either, as we explore Bradford, Leeds, Sheffield and Wakefield. Aston Martin has produced some of the finest sports cars made. One of the company’s most exciting periods was under the leadership of Augustus Bertelli. The company’s innovative cars, built between 1926 and 1940, were out-standing in terms of reliability and performance, and were proved in that toughest of motor sport classes, endurance racing – in particular the Le Mans 24 Hours race. This book looks at the cars produced by Aston Martin under the watchful eye of Bertelli, and covers the cars made by the company up to the start of the Second World War. It includes the 1.5-litre First, Second and Third Series cars and the 2-Litre range from 1936. These Aston Martins of the 1920s and 1930s – International, Le Mans, Mark II, Ulster and Speed models – are all covered in this book. Beyond Bertelli’s era, the book sheds light on the contributions made by engineer Claude Hill and owner Gordon Sutherland. It explores their innovative concept cars, ‘Donald Duck’ and Atom, which played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s post-war success under David Brown. Accompanied by a rich collection of contemporary and present-day photographs, this book stands as the definitive reference work solely dedicated to these beloved cars, revered by a passionate community of owners fostered by the Aston Martin Owners Club. Furthermore, these historic cars continue to enjoy great popularity, making this book a must-have for enthusiasts and admirers alike.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Gresley's Silver Link: The Evolution of the A4 Pacifics 1911-1941

    1 in stock

Gresley's A4 Pacifics are arguably the most famous locomotives ever built, a status cemented by Mallard's record breaking run on the 3rd July 38. And yet only a year later the glamorous streaks' seemed likely to be cast into obscurity by the coming of another world war. So, for only four exhilarating years they were allowed to flourish as their creator had intended and in that time captured the imagination of railwaymen and public alike. With the help of previously unpublished material the author analyses the complex evolution of the A4s - a project that began in 1911 when Gresley was appointed as Locomotive Superintendent of the Great Northern Railway. It is a story with many strands to consider - war, peace and war again, engineering and art, politics and business, recession and social change, the growth of the media and consumerism, the struggle for professional reputations and a growing, deeply damaging international rivalry. All these elements are captured in the story of the A4s in the heady days before conflict ended their brief golden age and Gresley's life came to an end.

  • VC10: Icon of the Skies: BOAC, Boeing and a Jet Age Battle

Pen & Sword Books Ltd VC10: Icon of the Skies: BOAC, Boeing and a Jet Age Battle

    1 in stock

Other books have charted the VC10 in airline life, but this book blends that story with a well-researched tale of corporate and political power play. It asks: just what lay behind the sales failure of the VC10? Politics played an important part of course, as did BOAC's tactics, and a who dunnit cast of politico-corporate events and machinations at the highest level of society during the dying days of Empire in 1960s Britain. Key players in the story, from Tony Benn to famous test pilot Brian Trubshaw (Concorde), are cited and quoted. The VC10 was Europe's biggest jet airliner of its age and regarded as the world's best looking airliner. It was safe, fast, and designed to take off from short runways in Africa and Asia, at the request of its main operator BOAC - the airline that would later go on to become today's British Airways. The VC10 and the larger Super VC10 were beloved by pilots and passengers alike and became icons of the 1960s. They were hugely popular all over the world; East African Airlines made its name with Super VC10s, and so too did Freddie Laker. The RAF also made the most of its VC10s. Yet the VC10 was eclipsed by Boeing's 707 which sold by the hundreds, despite the fact that the 707 could not initially operate from the runways of the Commonwealth and old British Empire routes, as the VC10 undoubtedly could. The men of the Vickers Company who created the VC10 would later go on to engineer Concorde and, of course, the rest is history. But the era of the VC10 was pivotal and, by exploring this historical period in depth and highlighting all the various impediments that stood in the way of success for the VC10, Lance Cole adds an important layer to our understanding of twentieth century history.

It is now over four decades since the famed archaeologist and explorer Indiana Jones first appeared on our screens in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The creation of George Lucas, it borrowed heavily from the Saturday morning cinema serials of the 1930s and 1940s. Although not quite as prolific as Lucas’s ‘Star Wars’ franchise, Raiders of the Lost Ark and its sequels spawned a whole range of merchandise. This book brings together a large selection of the multitude of products that have been created as a result of the adventures of Indiana Jones.

The Czech Republic and Slovakia emerged as independent countries in 1993, as joint successors of the former Czechoslovakia. Having once been a single country, with a single national railway operator, the change was significant, although both countries, and their railways, still have a lot in common. Loco types have changed through modernization and rebuilding, and both countries have retained very different narrow-gauge systems that are still in daily operation. Both countries have invested in modern fleets, and rail freight has boomed thanks to globalisation and EU membership, resulting in a wide variety of trains. Spanning three decades, this book explores the history of both countries and their railways, and features over 140 pictures, most of which have never been published before. The book concludes by looking at the ambitious plans for new high-speed networks, connecting both countries, and most of their neighbours by the late 2030s.

One of the most evocative reminders of Victorian ingenuity at the British seaside is the much-loved cliff lift. This simple method of transporting people up and down the cliff side has been a feature of our coast, and a few inland towns, for over 150 years and has recently undergone a renaissance at places as varied as the National Coal Mining Museum, Legoland and the Centre for Alternative Technology. The cliff lift, otherwise termed the cliff railway or tramway, is also known as a funicular railway. The word ‘funicular’ is defined as ‘of rope or tension’, in other words a cable-hauled railway or tramway. The lifts were directly descended from cable-hauled railways, prevalent in mines and quarries, but also early passenger lines, where an engine or winding gear hauled loads up steep slopes. The term ‘cliff lift’ also generally encompasses the elevator-type lifts that were erected at some resorts. This book illustrates, mainly in colour, all the principal cliff lifts and railways that have been built in the British Isles, along with associated cable tramways, since their inception in the Victorian age. In addition to featuring all the surviving lifts, this book includes others which are long gone, and serves as a fine record of these charming and unique structures.

This collection of charming animals provides a satisfying creative experience. Twelve templates of abstract exotic animals-including a giraffe, lion, flamingo, antelope, and meerkat-are paired with hundreds of colorful stickers. Readers simply need to follow the guide and create the images of the animals by applying the stickers to the template. Because the drawings are abstract, there is no "correct" place for each sticker-as long as the right colors are in the right area, the animal will still emerge from the dots. Additional pages of multicolored stickers give readers the opportunity to get imaginative and create rainbow-colored animals. This freedom to "color outside the lines" offers the chance of creativity and fun. The "canvases" and sticker sheets are detachable, which makes the process easier and allows the images to be displayed afterwards. The perfect vehicle for unwinding and letting those creative juices flow, this exceptional sticker book will find a ready audience in adults as well as children.
