    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis monograph deals with the history of Arabic text of the History of the Patriarchs of Alexandria and its Greek and Coptic sources. After an introductory chapter on the state of research concerning this Arabic text and a chapter on its two recensions, it is demonstrated that the work of collecting the sources and translating them into Arabic must be attributed to the Alexandrian layman Mawhub Ibn Mufarrig, who lived in the eleventh century A.D., rather than to the famous theologian, Sawirus (Severus) Ibn al-Muqaffa', bishop of al-Ashumunayn in the mid tenth century, to whom this achievement is traditionally ascribed. The three remaining chapters deal with the precise identification of the Coptic sources, with the method of Coptic-Arabic translation, and with other aspects of Mawhub's editorial work.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis study was defended as a dissertation in Groningen (1998). The first monograph in the series, it studies the Acts of John in its second-century context and sheds new light on the text, which was probably written in Asia Minor before the year 150 AD. Lalleman shows that both the Gnostic and the non-Gnostic sections of the Acts of John owe much more to the canonical books of the New Testament than has been assumed. The enigma of the Gnostic section is solved by the discovery that it forms the second stage of initiation into a Gnostic form of Christianity. Read in this way, both sections of the Acts of John turn out to be important steps on the trajectory from the Fourth Gospel to Gnosticism. Penetrating investigations of the Christology and the attitude towards asceticism in the Acts of John complete the book.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe first book of the Ethicon of Gregory Barhebraeus (d. 1286) contains a description of a number of ascetical practices such as the manner of saying prayers, reading spiritual books, reciting psalms, fasting, living in seclusion, pilgrimage, etc. Barhebraeus' description is partly based on Greek and Syriac authors on the spiritual life. The originality of the work, however, lies in it being influenced by Islamic authors such as Al-Ghazali and B. Sina. This influence causes Barhebraeus to pay attention to basically Islamic concepts as sama, dhikr, etc. Much attention is given to the identification of the sources. In a special appendix one finds the parallel texts of Al-Ghazali's Ilhya 'ulum aldin and the first book of Barhebraeus' Ethicon.

Thus, it illustrates Karol Wojtyla's thought in this field and his guidelines for the development of international law: human rights, the rights of peoples and nations, the right of humanitarian intervention, development cooperation. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisSt. Basil was one of the most popular of the Greek Fathers amongst the Syrian churches, and his De Spiritu Sancto was twice translated into Syriac. The first version, made in the late fourth / early fifth centuries, survives in three manuscripts of the fifth-seventh centuries and is edited and translated here for the first time. It is a paraphrastic text and so is of theological interest in its own right. Its biblical citations are also noteworthy. The second translation, made in the seventh century, survives only in fragments and these have been collected from florilegia manuscripts and edited in parallel with the Greek text. Introductions to the two volumes explore the Syriac manuscript traditions of this work and their significance, and investigate St. Basil's contacts with Syriac-speaking Christians and the theology of the first Syriac version. Unusually, a detailed orthographic index of textual variants is also included.

Book SynopsisThe present work offers an edition and English translation of the Arabic version of the Life of Stephen of Mar Sabas. When Stephen died in 794 A.D., a vivid account of his life was drawn up within a few years of his death by one of his disciples, Leontius of Damascus. In part autobiographical, Leontius' account offers a unique glimpse into the life of the Palestinian monasteries in the early Islamic period. It also sheds important light on a host of other issues. Among these: the social history of early Islamic Syria and Palestine, the history of the Jerusalem patriarchate, and early Muslim-Christian relations. The present work should be of interest both to scholars of church history and to historians of early Islam.

  • Peeters Publishers The Modern Pilgrim: Multidisciplinary

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is the product of a relatively long history of pilgrimage research in a Dutch theological setting. It is intended as a report for an international audience on this long-running programme. Two lines are followed in the book. The first is the track of liturgical studies, in which an historical, European ethnological and anthropological approach has predominated. The second is a social science track, with specific content coming from psychology of religion. The combination of these two lines has been extremely fruitful. In addition to results of various surveys of contemporary pilgrimage practice and the expansion of research into ritual and cultural context in which modern pilgrims find themselves, special attention is also bestowed on historiographic issues involved in orienting pilgrimage research, and its theoretical and methodological aspects. The places of pilgrimage examined here are Wittem, Dokkum and Amsterdam in The Netherlands, Banneux in Belgium, Lourdes and La Salette in France, and Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The central question which informs the whole study is to what extent one can perhaps speak of a new type of pilgrim today, the "modern pilgrim".

  • Peeters Publishers Liturgical Music as Ritual Symbol: A Case Study

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this book, Sister Kubicki uses Jacques Berthier's Taize music to explore the nature of liturgical music as ritual symbol. She carries out a hermeneutical analysis of Berthier's chants and examines biographical and historical data related to the creator's of Taize music and the founding of the Taize community. The author draws on five areas of study to interpret the Taize chants as ritual symbol - symbol theory, semiotics, theologies of symbol, ritual theory, and perfomative language theory. The final chapter explores potential ecclesial meanings which may be mediated in the Taize liturgy and the role of Berthier's chants in mediating that meaning. The study concludes that it is music's symbolic property that enables it to be both ministerial and integral to the liturgy. As symbolic activity, music-making evokes participation, negotiates relationships, and enables the assembly to orient themselves and to find their identity and place within their world. Furthermore, music-making provides the illocutionary force to "do something" in the act of singing. Thus it is that as part of a complexus of ritual symbols, music interacts with other symbols, in mediating the liturgy's meaning.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEphrem the Syrian (d. 373) has often been taken to represent an unhellenized Semitic form of Christianity in unbroken continuity with the tradition of Jesus and the apostles. This somewhat romanticized view of Ephrem disregards the fact that Syria had been subject to Greek influence since its conquest centuries earlier by Alexander the Great. Ephrem's own writings however frequently betray a familiarity with Greek philosophical ideas. This book first introduces Ephrem's intellectual context and his attitude towards learning. It then systematically analyzes parallels between Ephrem and Greek writers on the subjects of atomism, space, on corporeals, vision, and the four elements. This study thereby demonstrates that Ephrem draws not only on Semitic cultural traditions, but also on Greek philosophical thought.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe catacombs - the long underground galleries into which the early Christian community of Rome buried its dead - have always fascinated visitors to Rome. Containing the graves of hundreds of thousands of early Christian believers, as well as the tombs of famous martyrs and no less famous popes, the catacombs are truly awe-inspiring places. It is here, in the dark and winding galleries of these enormous subterranean "cities of the dead", that one encounters the earliest physical evidence of a community that changed the course of Western civilization once and for all. In this long-awaited book - the first general study on the catacombs to appear in English in a long time - readers are taken on an underground tour by one of the world's foremost specialists in catacomb archaeology. In addition to providing practical information for those wishing to enter the catacombs as visitors or pilgrims, this book explains how recent archaeological discoveries in the catacombs of Rome have changed (and continue to change) our understanding of how Rome's early Christian community expressed its faith while coping with the realities of everyday life. This book is essential reading for all those wishing to possess an up-to-date manual on why the early Christian and the Jewish catacombs occupy a place of such central importance in the celebrations surrounding the year 2000.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe origin, development and spread of the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross is traced on the basis of liturgical sources, and through a careful examination of the liturgical textual material, the meaning of the feast is analyzed with respect to its content. Among the important points receiving attention in this analysis are the place, function and significance of the Cross relic, and the theology of the Cross, or the process whereby the understanding of the Cross was shaped, as that was invested in the feast. The research is based on sources of Western liturgy from the early Middle Ages, and therefore has bearing on the period in the West in which a multiform liturgy, celebrated according to various indigenous local and regional traditions, gradually made way for one uniform Latin liturgy patterned on Roman models. The feast of the Exaltation of the Cross spread through the West from Rome within this context of standardization and Romanization. This raises questions about the uniformity and the Roman content of the feast. This study especially examines to what degree indigenous interpretations of the Cross, which were part of the legacy of the Hispanic and Gallican traditions in particular, continued to be preserved through the liturgical books of the early Middle Ages.

  • Peeters Publishers Israel of Alqosh and Joseph of Telkepe. A Story

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEast-Syrian Christians of Iraqi Kurdistan managed to develop a written literary tradition in Neo-Aramaic, transmitted in manuscripts from the 16th century onwards. A selection of the earliest dated religious poems is now published in a critical edition, with English translation and full concordances to the texts. In the introduction, the salient linguistic and stylistic features of the corpus are placed in their historical context and studied in socio-linguistic, text-critical, literary and anthropological perspectives. The poems are presented as exploring new methods of dealing with the Classical Syriac heritage. Their literary value can only be appreciated as reflecting the aesthetics of a poetic tradition, which is strongly influenced by its oral-aural background. With the work of early vernacular poets as Israel of Alqosh and Joseph of Telkepe, the vernacular language enters the space of liturgical poetry, bringing with it manners and techniques of the folk literary tradition. The multicultural milieu of Iraqi Kurdistan has a certain impact on the transformation of the late East-Syriac literary tradition. Words, motifs and myths, which are shared with the surrounding religious communities - especially Jews and Muslims - are either positively incorporated into Christian poetry or polemically used against those communities.

  • Peeters Publishers Pseudo-Athanasius on Virginity: T.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis late ancient Christian treatise, preserved in Syriac and falsely attributed to Athanasius of Alexandria (d. 373), exhorts female virgins to be "holy in body and spirit" (1 Cor. 7:34) and to abstain from "all that is in the world - the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches" (1 John 1:16). Drawing on themes developed in the de virginitate literature of the fourth and fifth centuries, the author instructs virgins on their proper physical deportment and use of the five senses, but he incorporates into his work exhortations to purity and repentance originally addressed to a wider audience of male and female ascetics and perhaps even laity. Most likely a translation of a Greek original composed between the fifth and ninth centuries, the treatise is of interest also for its frequent and inventive use of the Bible in support of the ascetic ideal.

Book SynopsisThis book includes all papers presented at the colloquium on Church and State on 28 February and 1-2 March 2001. The colloquium, focusing on the legal position of churches, the autonomy of churches in modern societies and recent tendencies in jurisprudence, was organised by the Faculty of Canon Law of the Catholic University Leuven in collaboration with the Faculty of Theology of the University of Stellenbosch. Both the conference and the book have two objectives. The fist is informing about the South African history on Church and State relationships and its current situation under the new Constitution. The second objective is to search for models leading to a new equilibrium between Church and State in South Africa. Models offered by other countries are examined as a point of reference or as a possible source of inspiration. International scholars and academics, church Ministers as well as leading politicians offer their viewpoints and enter into debate with each other.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn rabbinic parlance, A"Japheth in the tents of ShemA" (Genesis 9:27) has become a proverbial expression for the interaction between Greek and Jewish cultures. The present volume contains 15 studies exploring a wide variety of aspects of the meeting of these cultures in antiquity. In the past 30 years the manifold manifestations of 'Jewish Hellenism' have become the focus of intensive research. The author of this book has played an active part in this field and the essays presented here are the fruits of his most recent research. He investigates, among other things, the extent to which Greek had become the daily language of the Jews (and the Samaritans) in Hellenistic and Roman Palestine; the knowledge of Greek medical lore and science among the rabbis; the development of Greek forms of the synagogal Eighteen Benedictions; the Jewish participation in the Hellenistic-Roman debate about antediluvian knowledge ('wisdom from before the flood'); the background of the surprising phenomenon of voluntary celibacy among ancient Jews; the role of the veneration of the tombs of biblical prophets in Jewish popular religion; the work of the Judaeo-Greek alchemist Maria, who happens to be the first female Jewish author we know of; the life and works of the most notorious anti-Semite from pagan antiquity, Apion, and Josephus' response to him; the Samaritan diaspora in Rome; the attractiveness of Judaism for Christians; et multa cetera. Pieter W. van der Horst (1946) is professor of New Testament and of the Jewish and Hellenistic world of early Christianity at the Faculty of Theology of Utrecht University. He published some 250 articles and books in the fields of early Judaism, ancient Christianity, and Graeco-Roman culture, with a special emphasis on their interactions. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Tolkien, "On Fairy-stories", 1947).

Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is concerned with mystical texts and theological reflection with reference to spiritual insight. in the first place the author shows, with reference to two great figures in the Christian mystical tradition - Meister Eckhart and John of the Cross - how coming to insight involves a three-fold rhythm: being touched, losing one's sight and the finding of insight as this relates to the quality of life. The author discusses in the next chapters three other authors: Therese of Lisieux, Etty Hillesum and Dag Hammarskjold. They were themselves readers of mystical literature and stand closer to us in time. Current questions of meaning, especially as it relates to suffering, influence the framework in which they viewed quality of life. In their writings one can see an unmistakable growth to an extraordinaryly intensive experience of God which enables them to face life with a more than ordinary power and inspiration.

Komonchak, G. Miccoli, H. Sauer, N. Tanner, L.A. Tagle, R. Burigana, G. Turbanti und G. Alberigo.

Book SynopsisDionysius bar Salibi's apologetic treatise, "A Response to the Arabs", is the longest and most comprehensive dispute text with Muslims that exists in Syriac. Its main purpose is to acquaint the reader with the essential facts pertaining to Islam and to provide apologetic arguments intended to refute the challenges of Islam to the Christian faith. What sets Bar Salibi's treatise apart from other Syriac dispute texts is the information it contains concerning the history and doctrinal development of Islam. The first two discourses deal with the prophet Muhammad, the emergence of Islam, the "Qurian", and the origins and characteristics of the main Islamic schools of thought. The central beliefs of the Christian faith are explained and defended. The third discourse (chapters 25-30) is made up of the most extensive collection of quotations from the "Qurian" translated into Syriac that exists in any known Syriac dispute text.
