  • Short Cuts: Artists in China

Skira Short Cuts: Artists in China

Book SynopsisThe first, intimate visual documentation of artists who have influenced and transformed the Chinese art scene over the last two decades German photographer Thomas Fuesser has been following artists in China since 1993, when he was first invited by renowned Dutch curator Hans van Dijk (1946–2002) to join a group of foreign journalists and photographers to visit the up-and-coming members of the then fledgling Beijing and Shanghai art scenes. Reports on this visit, by New York Times art critic Andrew Solomon and several others, later played a major role in the making of prominent artists, such as Fang Lijun, Wang Guangyi, and Yue Minjun. Over many years, Füsser has developed close and enduring professional relationships with the artistic community in China. His striking portraits tell their stories and depict their work and personalities in an entirely distinct style, documenting a part of contemporary history and an immensely dynamic time in China. Recording the lives and thought processes of leading artists, such as Ai Weiwei, Cai Guo-Qiang, Zeng Fanzhi, Zhang Peili, Feng Mengbo, Wu Shanzhuan, and Zhou Tiehai, ‘SHORT CUTS’, inspired by Robert Altman’s concept of multiple parallel destinies that interact, provides a fascinating visual insight into the heart and soul of Chinese society.

    Skira School Projects

Book SynopsisA selection of the themes Alberto Lattuada proposed to his students during his fourteen years at Polimoda in Florence, accompanied by beautiful drawings. Alberto Lattuada is a fashion illustrator and a stylist. His projects are a rather extravagant mix of fashion, costume, art, cinema and the eccentric and legendary styles of famous figures. “I tried to transmit self-criticism and control over one’s own creativity and a sophisticated sense of elegance and style…. I believe that I also added a small spark of love, hidden between the lines and more or less well-rendered marks, between the smudges and splotches of colour.” – Alberto Lattuada

Book SynopsisWe have been walking upright for almost six million years and soon learned how to offload our body’s weight on the arch of the foot. Salvatore Ferragamo dedicated all his life to the study of the foot’s anatomy, also researching into architecture and engineering, as we can understand by looking at his patents. Walking, dancing barefoot or en pointe, advancing along a wire in the manner of a tight-rope walker, climbing mountains, stepping and marching on orders, wandering about to find oneself, roaming around: these are just some of the themes dealt with in Equilibrium, the new project by the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo, curated by Stefania Ricci and Sergio Risaliti. This volume is based on the comparison among magnificent, important and meaningful artworks of various origin. The project has been developed through several media: painting, sculpture, photography, video, cinema and printed editions. The geometric balancing of Wassily Kandinsky is displayed alongside the thread-like structures of Fausto Melotti; Albrecht Dürer’s Fortuna with Giulio Paolini’s funambulist; and portraits of Nijinsky alongside those of Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Trisha Brown.

Book SynopsisFrom Hogarth to Reynolds, from Gainsborough to Turner, the great protagonists of English painting between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This is the first comprehensive overview of the extraordinary development of British painting during the eighteenth century, which anticipated themes, styles and techniques that later became paradigms of modernity. This volume focuses on the English context at a time when the growth of artistic standing was accompanied by the country’s conquest of hegemony on a historical, political and economic plane. The volume is arranged chronologically in seven sections, which include a selection of over 100 masterpieces by the most significant English painters. The main objective is to enable readers to rediscover the genres of portrait and landscape, which have always characterized English art. Readers can admire the work of artists like William Hogarth, Henry Fuseli (Johann Heinrich Füssli), Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, Joseph Wright of Derby, George Stubbs, John Constable and William Turner, who offer a completely original cross-section of eighteenthand early nineteenth-century painting in Great Britain.

  • The Eternal Baroque: Studies in Honor of Jennifer

Skira The Eternal Baroque: Studies in Honor of Jennifer

Book SynopsisJennifer Montagu is a world-renowned art historian whose name has become synonymous with the study of Italian Baroque sculpture. In honor of Jennifer Montagu’s immeasurable contribution to the field of Italian Baroque sculpture, sixty-two of the foremost scholars of European sculpture have been invited to participate in a symposium in her honor on 6 - 7 September 2013 at the Wallace Collection, London. Thirty of the papers presented there were selected for the publication as a tribute to this generous colleague and friend who has inspired and mentored dozens of younger historians in European art. Dr. Montagu’s academic work began in Political Science at Oxford, but conversations with Ernst Gombrich led her to pursue an advanced degree in art history instead. In 1963, long before the study of Italian bronze statuettes reached the level of interest that it enjoys today, her classic survey, simply titled Bronzes, was met with great enthusiasm, eventually being printed in five languages. Montagu taught at the University of Reading until 1964, when she became an assistant curator of the Photographic Collection at the Warburg Institute. In 1971 she became a full curator of the collection, a position she held until 1991. During these years she published at an indefatigable rate, and following her retirement from that post, her productivity only increased. Montagu was a Slade Professor of Fine Art at Cambridge University, a Mellon Professor at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (National Gallery of Art,Washington, D.C.), and a visiting professor at the Collège de France. Montagu’s numerous publications include her monumental study of Alessandro Algardi (Yale University Press, 1985), Roman Baroque Sculpture: the Industry of Art (Yale, 1989) and Gold, Silver and Bronze: Metal Sculpture of the Italian Baroque (Mellon Lectures, CASVA; Yale University Press, 1996). She was appointed LVO (Royal Victorian Order) in 2006 for services to the Royal Collection and CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 2012 for her contribution to the history of art.

Book SynopsisThrough my work I return to my native roots, my youth, and the transitory world of innocence…The role of memory in art is a recognised fact, but in my case, as a painter living in a foreign city for so many years, my memories are doubly potent in sustaining my creative life.” - Sakti Burman Legends, family, and Indian gods meet and mingle in Sakti Burman’s private, kaleidoscopic universe. Sakti Burman is one of India’s pioneering painters, who was born in 1935 in Kolkata and grew up in what is now Bangladesh. This monograph is the definitive publication illustrating the evolution of Sakti Burman’s prolific paintings, drawings, and watercolors, contextualizing his lifelong exploration into alternative ways of seeing. Burman’s colorful figures hark back to a kind of ancient “lost paradise,” but also sustain a fresh and irrepressible faith in the beauty and sensibilities of Mother Nature alongside a hopeful human spirit.

Book SynopsisFor eight centuries the presence and the influence of Francis’s life and deeds have made themselves felt in the history of Christianity and in that of the rest of humanity too. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Friar Francis: Traces,Words, Images staged at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, a place that hosts a variety of cultural experiences every day and that is itself a symbol of peace, the volume is a tribute to the figure of Francis, extraordinary man and saint, and it’s a rare occasion of great scientific and cultural value, to approach and get to know Francis through ancient and unique manuscripts coming from the Library of the Sacro Convento di San Francesco in Assisi. They are the oldest papal records and manuscripts that directly concern the person of the saint from Assisi: his writings, his life, the development of the religious order he founded. The book is divided into three sections: Traces, Words, Images. The Traces are the ones left by Francis at the level of official documentation, in the papal records and some notarial deeds. Alongside these is presented the most famous and authoritative of the manuscripts in Assisi, the Codex 338, which comprises the oldest collection of the saint’s writings. The Words section contains some copies of the oldest biographies, the hagiographic legendae of the saint. The Images section offers a selection of illuminated manuscripts in which the saint of Assisi is represented, precious examples of some of the principal traditional iconographic models.
