Book SynopsisThis collection is a three-volume facsimile edition in large folio format of the complete catalogues of the series of 6 major exhibitions of Ukiyoe Hanga, Japanese woodblock prints, held in Paris over the period 1909 to 1914. Organized chronologically from the early Ukiyoe period of 17th century through to the 19th century, the exhibitions featured more than 2,300 works by around 130 Japanese artists. They were selected from 66 collections of reputed art critics, such as R. Kœchlin, artists, including H. Rivière and R. Collin, art dealers and many connoisseurs of Japanese art as well as Musée du Louvre and Musée des Arts Décoratifs which widely covered the prints by minor but important artists as well as famous names like Sharaku, Hokusai, Utamaro, Hiroshige. No such exhibitions in the subject both in scale and in comprehensiveness have ever been repeated. The catalogues, reprinted here complete for the first time, include around 1060 black and white plates and 60 in colour. They were originally published each year of the exhibition in limited numbers, 100-130 copies only, and are not easily accessible in libraries, both in Japan and in the West. Ukiyoe is a key aspect of Japonism, and the reception of Japanese arts in the Western culture is now studied extensively. These catalogues will provide an extensive source for scholars and researchers of the history of Japanese art, the history of modern art, impressionism and the history of print.Table of ContentsVolume IPart 1: Catalogue of Exhibition in February 1909Estampes japonaises primitives, exposées au Musée des arts décoratifs en Février 1909Introduction by Raymond KœchlinCatalogue of 328 items with 170 plates in b&w, 64 pp.Estampes boudiques & Prints by Chincho, Fusanobu, Katsunobu, Kiyohiro, Kiyomasu, Kiyominé I, Kiyomitsu, Kiyonobu I, Kiyonobu II, Kiyoshige, Kiyotada, Kiyotsuné, Kwaigetsudo, Masanobu, Morofusa, Moronobu, Morotané, Sadaharu, Sadatoshi, Shighenaga, Shighenobu, Toshinobu, Toyonobu, Yoshinobu Part 2: Catalogue of Exhibition in January 1910Harunobu, Koriusaï, Shunsho : estampes japonaises, exposées au Musée des arts décoratifs en Janvier 1910Introduction by Raymond KœchlinCatalogue of 328 items with 90 plates in b&w and 5 in colour, 67 pp.Prints by Bunsho, Giho, Goro, Goso Koréki, Harunobu, Harushigé, Jitokuso, Kiosen, Kogan, Komatsu, Koriusai, Kosen, Kwakushi, Masunobu, Mei Kodo Sakei, Minko, Nenro, Ran U, Risen, Rokio, Shibo, Shigémasa (Kitao), Shizen, Shunjo, Shunko, Shunri, Shunsen, Shunsho, Shuntei, Shuntoku, Shunzen, Toyokuni, Yoshinobu (Komai)Volume IIPart 3: Catalogue of Exhibition in January 1911Kiyonaga, Buncho, Sharaku : estampes japonaises, exposées au Musée des arts décoratifs en Janvier 1911Introduction by Raymond KœchlinCatalogue of 335 items with 189 plates in b&w and 11 in colour, 102 pp.Prints by Ippitsusaï Buncho, Katsukawa Shuncho, Kitao Keisaï Masayoshi, Kitao Masanobu, Kitao Shighémasa, Torii IV Kiyonaga, Toshusaï Sharaku, Utagawa ToyoharuPart 4: Catalogue of Exhibition in January 1912Utamaro : estampes japonaises, exposées au Musée des arts décoratifs en Janvier 1912Introduction by Raymond KœchlinCatalogue of 335 items with 207 plates in b&w and 18 in colour, 114 pp.Prints by Utamaro, Bunro, Hidémaro, Kikumaro, Minémaro, Sékiho, Shikimaro, Takémaro, Tsukimaro, YukimaroVolume IIIPart 5: Catalogue of Exhibition in January 1913Yeishi, Choki, Hokusaï : estampes japonaises, exposées au Musée des arts décoratifs en Janvier 1913Introduction by Raymond KœchlinCatalogue of 405 items with 249 plates in b&w and 11 in colour, 143 pp.Prints by Choki, Gangakusai, Gakutei, Hokkei, Hokuba, Hokuga, Hokuju, Hokusai, Hokutei, Keiri, Rekisentei (Yeiri III), Ryusai, Shighénobu, Shinsai, Shumman, Shunzan, Taigaku, Yeicho, Yeiri I, Yeiri II, Yeishi, Yeishin, Yeisho, YeisuiPart 6: Catalogue of Exhibition in January 1914Toyokuni, Hiroshigé : estampes japonaises, exposées au Musée des arts décoratifs en Janvier 1914Introduction by Raymond Kœchlin & Charles VignierCatalogue of 404 items with 151 plates in b&w and 14 in colour, 100 pp.Prints by Utagawa Toyokuni, Utagawa Toyohiro, Utagawa Kunimasa, Utagawa Kunisada, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Kikugawa Yeizan, Keisai Yeisen, Kunihisa, Kuninaga, Ichiryusai Kunikazu, Kingaku, Cho-o, Hokkyo Gyokusan, Kyuzan, Fuminobu, Soshin, Fusatané, Utashigé, Rissai, Ichiyusai Hiroshigé, Hiroshigé II, Shojo Kyosai, Zeshin, Koho, Gekko, Tsukiyoka Yonejiro

Editon Synapse Ernest Francisco Fenollosa - Complete Catalogue

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisErnest Francisco Fenollosa (1857-1908), often cited as the father of Japanese art, is also the founder of the Japanese art collection at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, one of the finest collections in the field. This publication is the facsimile reprint and its transcription of the only remaining notebook of Fenollosa and will make available for the first time the catalogue of his collection of Japanese paintings described by the collector himself. The remarkable point of this notebook is that Fenollosa mentions his opinions on Japanese art in his own voice whereas many of his other writings both in English and Japanese are often modified by editors or translators as many of them were published posthumously. The notebook consists of four parts; the title page, the preface, the catalogue and the index. Each entry of the catalogue includes the artist name and the title of painting followed by "commentaries and notes" which show interesting, suggestive and sometimes critical views on each painting. Fenollosa sold the collection of Japanese art to Dr. Charles Goddard Weld, another Bostonian collector, with the understanding that it was to remain permanently in the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston as the Fenollosa-Weld collection. Though some items catalogued in this notebook are no longer in the Museum’s collection, the majority of the masterpieces in the catalogue are still held there and we can appreciate their images in the museum’s website with the new commentaries based on today’s studies, which are quite different from the ones in this notebook by Fenollosa. In the transcribed entry of each item in this volume the accession numbers to the MFA’s database are added for the easy reference to the original works. With a new introduction and editor’s notes by Seichi Yamaguchi, the leading expert on Ernest Francisco Fenollosa, this catalogue is a vital source of information for those who study Japanese art and Japonisme and its reception in the US and the West.Table of ContentsPlates in colour:Introduction by Seiichi YamaguchiPart 1: Facsimile Reprint of Complete Catalogue of Collection of Specimens of Japanese Art including Notes and Commentaries and Reference to the Other Note Books belonging to the Collector Ernest Francisco FenollosaPart 2-1: Transcription of the ‘Catalogue’ including Index by Ernest Francisco FenollosaPart 2-2: Editor’s NotesPart 3-1: Introduction in Japanese by Seiichi Yamaguchi Part 3-2: Translation of the ‘Complete Catalogue’ in JapanesePart 3-3: Editor’s Notes in Japanese Part 3-4: List of Access Number of Museum of Fine Arts, BostonPart 3-5: Editor’s Index with Names and Titles in Japanese

  • Access Moscow: The Art Life of a City Revealed

Art Gid Access Moscow: The Art Life of a City Revealed

Book SynopsisIn 1986, the Soviet government created a statute enabling citizens to form associations and clubs for the first time since the 1920s. This-and the 1988 law on cooperatives which permitted private enterprise-gave rise to the first official organizations created by unofficial artists, as well as the beginning of a vibrant gallery scene. Run by artists, curators, and cultural entrepreneurs, these spaces unleashed the creative energy that now characterizes early post-Soviet Russia. Access Moscow examines the key role which the first independent galleries played in the emergence of Moscow's art scene in the 1990s. Through historical texts from leading practitioners of the period-some of which are translated into English for the first time-and essays by Valentin Diaconov, Kate Fowle, Andrei Kovalev, and Elena Selina, this book provides a first-hand account of an art community in formation. A chronology of art and political events shows the development of art life in Moscow over the course of the decade. Access Moscow is the second in a new series of books by Garage Museum of Contemporary Art on research and materials in Garage Archive Collection.Table of Contents1) Preface, Anton Belov. 2) Moscow Art Life: 1990-2000, Kate Fowle. 3) Installing the 1990s, Andrei Kovalev. 4) A Time to Gather Stones, Elena Selina. 5) Twenty Years is Not Much Compared to Eternity: Galleries as Commissioners and Promoters of the Art of Young Russian Capitalism in the 1990s, Valentin Diaconov. 6) Who's Who in Contemporary Art in Moscow, 1993. 7) From the Archive: Chronology of the 1990s, Galleries, Contributor Biographies, Selected Bibliography, Name and Place Index, Acknowledgements

Artguide s.r.o. Proof - Francisco Goya, Sergei Eisenstein, Robert

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisFeaturing works by Francisco Goya, Sergei Eisenstein and Robert Longo, Proof offers insight into the singularity of vision through which artists can reflect the social, cultural and political complexities of their times. Spanning eras and continents, each of these artists witnessed the turbulent transition from one century to another, experiencing the seismic impacts of revolution, civil rights movements and war. While Goya served church and king, Eisenstein the state, and Longo emerged during the rise of the contemporary art market--the dominant benefactors of each period--they all rose to prominence through developing nuanced practices that challenged expectations. With commissioned essays by journalist, activist and author Chris Hedges, artist Vadim Zakharov and Garage Chief Curator Kate Fowle, plus an interview with Longo, this book is published to accompany the exhibition of the same name.

Book SynopsisWith the launch of Moscow Art Magazine in 1993, curator and critic Viktor Misiano gave readers access to a rich variety of theory, criticism, and artists' texts by Russian and international writers. It is the only independent art journal in Russia which has weathered they country's economic crises and continued to publish innovative, and at times challenging, writing on visual art up to the present day.Critical Mass: Moscow Art Magazine 1993-2017 is published to mark the 100th issue of the magazine and presents a selection of texts, which cover the development of Russian art since the break-up of the Soviet Union. Arranged thematically, they range from the hopeful manifestos of the early 1990s to the angry, politically-engaged art of the 2010s. Misiano, who received the Igor Zabel Award for Culture and Theory in 2016, has written new introductions to the themes covered in the book, setting the original texts within the social and political context of their time. • Nuances of Latin American Art: Matices del arte

Turner Publicaciones, S.L. Nuances of Latin American Art: Matices del arte

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIs there such a thing as Latin American Art? Does it need this label in a global art world? It is, of course, clear that there is no such thing, just as there is no African nor European art. It would be interesting though to include Caribbean art (which of course doesn't exist either) and talk about specific forms of creolization in the way that Edouard Glissant means it from a global perspective that is not just Western. If we look at different artistic expressions in different local contexts within a geographic and linguistic area called Latin America, the insights we get are very interesting. It might remind us of a kaleidoscope, an ever changing, glittering flux of perspectives on a fluid carrier medium. Through extensive field research involving travel in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Mexico and Peru, I have been seeking to answer these questions and go into the Looking Glass. Those journeys have included connecting as much as possible with locals and investigating the subject of visual culture through them. In order to learn about local traditions, I have explored a small portion of the Amazonas on the border of Tres Fronteras, and stayed with an indigenous family on one of the Islands of Lake Titicaca. Additionally, in Peru I visited the art school in Cusco which is famous for the Cuzco School paintings. Whether in rural settings or the urban landscapes of Latin America, my approach has always been to be humble, to listen and learn, aware that my perspective is that of a Western woman. The discovery of immense cultural diversity intensely broadened my horizons. In order to develop an understanding of Latin American art, I have realized that attempting to describe it requires an open mind that stretches beyond any pre-conceived Eurocentric notions. Only then it is possible to appreciate the enormous variety of artistic expressions and contexts throughout multiple Latin American regions. The projects described here reflect fifteen collaborations that were carried out, over a period of six years involving thirty-four artists. In some cases, the exchanges included galleries in various Latin American countries. The themes explored were diverse and varied. They ranged from the abstract and highly conceptual to the more tangible and material. Together, the culminating exhibitions have each contributed to exploring essential questions about Latin American Art. The answers, however, are far from simple or complete. Beyond the collection gathered here, the process of discovery continues. So far, I have only witnessed the seedlings of my understanding beginning to emerge. During the process of trying to better understand Latin American Art and through producing exhibitions in Switzerland, as well as curating content in Mexico City and Brazil, it has become clear that cultural bridges can be built through the universal interests that inform artistic expression. These successful projects have demonstrated enormous potential for future artistic collaborations of all sorts. The possibilities are endless. - Andrea Hinteregger De Mayo, 2018. Book SynopsisArtists of The Spanish Golden Age such as Murillo, Zurbaran and Velazquez were the key to instigating a truly passionate appreciation of Spanish art among the great collectors at the end of the Modern Age, as well as the public institutions or other institutions that sprang from private initiative after the Industrial Revolution. There are notable sets of works created by Spanish artists in the United Kingdom, from the Osonas to Joan Miro, such as the ones conserved in Apsley House, Pollok House and the Dulwich Picture Gallery. The collections owned by public institutions also include a significant number of masterpieces of Spanish art, including the National Gallery of London and the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. Other public and private collections, such as the Wallace Collection, the Duke of Stafford Collection, the Fitzwilliam Museum and Bowes Museum, also contain masterpieces.

Book SynopsisA sophisticated wardrobe guides’ series for modern men. Uman. The Essays is a series of commentaries by contemporary connoisseurs (authors, journalists, and cultured men), who explore the sources of men's costume – sports, discovery, passions – to reveal the traditions and ethos at the basis of the ideal wardrobe. It is a project by Umberto Angeloni, former chief executive of Brioni, an Italian luxury lifestyle brand with global diffusion. The fourth Essay of the series is devoted to clothing designed for telemark (a term used for skiing using the Telemark turn. It is also known as “free heel skiing”). Its author Markus Ebner is the founder of Achtung, Germany’s directional fashion magazine and Sepp, a unique publication that brings together football and fashion. He is the men’s fashion critic for Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: “… what a man wears says a lot about him – first impressions always count. Even if we deeply believe in not judging a book by its cover, the old adage holds true: you only have one chance to make a good first impression…”

Book SynopsisFifty-six international designers and architects celebrate the Hogan label’s most recent collections. There is an obvious connection between the different forms of creative expression: this is the core philosophy Hogan, expressed in the Future Roots project in which 56 internationally famous designers and architects are captured in Ornella Sancassani’s photographs wearing the most recent collections designed by the fashion label. The black-and-white photographs interpret the fashion house’s savoir-faire; the architects and designers are captured in their professional workplaces or with those objects that in a concise way best express their Weltanschauung. Future Roots is therefore a story in pictures in which the different aspects of planning in design, architecture, fashion and photography are brought to the fore, showing little distinction between sectors.

Book SynopsisA catalogue inspired by the tradition of Latin American literature and authors such as Jorge Amado, Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The unique storytelling tradition which characterizes Latin American literature has influenced many contemporary artists around the world. Within this context, it is interesting to investigate the work of contemporary artists from around the world who are inspired not only by these authors, but by literature and poetry in general, as seen in works that are typically highly narrative. Naturally, there is a strong emphasis on artists from Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Colombia – such as Vik Muniz and Ernesto Neto from Brazil, Monika Bravo from Colombia, but the catalogue is not limited to Latin American artists - see for example Ryan Brown and Tracey Snelling from US, William Kentridge from South Africa – and the literary sources of inspiration also extend to other parts of the world. The works featured are not literal interpretations of these authors’ works, but all allude in some way to literature and poetry. The cross between text and image, poetry and poetic subject matter creates a strong thread that ties the works together.

Book SynopsisA selection of fifteen well-established artists from across the Maghreb, Levant, and Gulf in conversations moderated by experts on contemporary Middle Eastern art. Historically, artists have been known for their ability to understand emerging trends of thought and emotions before they become clear to the society at large. Yet, outside the art world, artists have rarely enjoyed opportunity to share their ideas. As revolutionary movements challenge decades of authoritarian rule across Arab countries, Conversations with Contemporary Arab Artists is the first book to give voice to artists from across the region and makes their thoughts accessible to a wide audience. Its purpose is to record for future generations these artists’ thoughts as they bear witness to revolutionary currents sparking deep transformations in their political and social landscapes. Rather than providing a comprehensive analysis of the “Arab Spring,” this book simply aims to provide readers with snap shots of the states of mind of intellectually engaged Arab artists. It is aimed at curators, art historians, artists, sociologists, political scientists, citizens of the Arab world and students of art, art history, and the Middle East.
