Skira Timer: Intimacy: Contemporary Art after Nine
Book SynopsisThis is the first chapter in a triennial project that centres on the relationship of the artist with him or herself in the screen-based age. All the works were created after 11 September 2001, a date impressed in the memory of everyone and that marked epoch-making changes. With Timer01, questions are asked on the internal space of the new social context created since the attack on the Twin Towers. One hundred artists from all over the world – many of whom are already well known on an international scale – are the protagonists of this project. This is the structure of the three chapters: Timer01: the individual in relation to him or herself; Timer02: the individual in relation to others; Timer03: the individual in relation to the architectural environment.

Skira Post-Impressionism
Book SynopsisPost-Impressionism is a movement in France that represented both an extension of Impressionism and a rejection of that style’s inherent limitations. The term Post-Impressionism was coined by the English art critic Roger Fry for the work of such late 19th-century painters as Paul Cézanne, Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and others. Most of these painters began as Impressionists; each of them abandoned the style, however, to form his own highly personal art. Impressionism was based, in its strictest sense, on the objective recording of nature in terms of the fugitive effects of colour and light. The Post-Impressionists rejected this limited aim in favour of more ambitious expression, admitting their debt, however, to the pure, brilliant colours of Impressionism, its freedom from traditional subject matter, and its technique of defining form with short brushstrokes of broken colour. The work of these painters formed a basis for several contemporary trends and for early 20th-century modernism.

Skira Video Art: The Castello di Rivoli Collection
Book SynopsisOver the last four decades video art has undergone numerous transformations. If in its early years, during the mid sixties, video was used by artists to record performances created in an isolated studio, it also offered an important creative environment which defined new spaces and an alternative language to the mass codes used by television. In the ‘80s video took on the form of a projected image that was capable of defining a totally new type of space inside which spectators could move while surrounded by a hypnotic electronic embrace. More recently with digital technology artists can compete with the magic of cinema and develop a singularly fertile exchange with it that has been fundamental in developing the poetic language of video works today.

BIS Publishers B.V. Pixel-Art Game: Café Terrace at Night
Book SynopsisThis three-staged memory game invites you to observe masterpieces closely. Historically, a masterpiece was a work of a very high standard, produced in order to obtain membership of a guild or academy. Since the author never went to art school, her untrained eye wondered: “How should I look at art in order to fully appreciate it?” Trying to answer this question, she decided to design a system of observation based on different steps: games and activities following a set scheme that triggers the player to look at a masterpiece on a different scale. Pixel-Art Game allows you to zoom into these Dutch Masterpieces. Match the original image with its pixelated copies by zooming into Van Gogh’s famous Café Terrace at Night. The painter’s colour and use of light are emphasised through the pixels of the digitalised image, taking art into our contemporary digital language. With light packaging, perfect to take along with you, the Pixel-Art Game offers several games in one set. Each of these 3 games is a step towards understanding the artwork better, and they can be played with multiple players.

Tara Books Frida Folk
Book Synopsis"Here’s another book about Frida Kahlo, and this one doesn’t feature even a single original painting. What it does contain are encounters with her– curious, moving, or just fun – from around the world. From Frida fashion dolls to little clay Friditas, all of us at some point have encountered the countless souvenirs, images and mementos that reinvent the great Mexican artist, and keep her alive in popular memory. Her own painting was steeped in Mexican folk art, and the connection has turned out to be curiously reciprocal. Popular artists – not just in Mexico but around the world – have been inspired by her life, art, and persona, to come up with extraordinary and at times very curious tributes to her. The ways in which she is repeatedly re-labeled and re-invented is unprecedented in the world of art. Is this global appropriation of Frida as an icon – Fridamania – just commercial kitsch? Or is there another way of thinking about the phenomenon? Featuring a staggering variety of Frida objects, images and mementoes in every conceivable material, this book traces some of the trails that Frida herself laid... a legacy which allows people to create their own countless versions of her. It's a rollercoaster ride through 300 years of cultural history. This is a stirring tale about the image and its meaning, and the link between culture and society. Above all, it's about us, and about who we are today - as people. Cannibal/Hannibal Publishers Strook: Portraits
Book SynopsisThis is the first monograph on contemporary Belgian artist Stefaan De Croock (b.1982), alias Strook. He became well known for his ‘heads’ made of scrap wood. The key theme of his layered collages, sculptures and installations is, in a word, time, and is visible in every piece of the rough, patinated raw material he chooses to compose his works. Most frequently this is wood. “Old, weathered materials have something magical for me. They emanate a certain spontaneity that is impossible to recreate. The colours, the paint, the relief… they form an imprint of everything the material ever experienced. You can truly see time.” - Strook As part of the Mind the Artist project by Musea Brugge, work by Strook will be on show from 30 October 2021 to 6 March 2022 at various historic locations throughout the city. Text in English and Dutch.

Cannibal/Hannibal Publishers From Antwerp to Amsterdam: Painting from the
Book SynopsisSeventeeth-century Dutch art is famed throughout the world. Yet how ‘Dutch’ are those paintings in actual fact? Did the countless history pieces, landscapes, portraits, still lifes and scenes from everyday life truly originate in cities like Amsterdam, Haarlem, Delft and Leiden? Or might the cradle of these genres actually be located somewhere else? This book presents over 90 masterpieces by Flemish and Dutch artists to show how 17th century Dutch painting could never have flourished the way it did without the foundations laid in 16th century Antwerp. Thoroughly researched, it tells the story of the talented and accomplished artists and merchants who migrated north in search of religious liberty and new commercial opportunities after Antwerp fell to Spanish Catholic troops in 1585. With text contributions by Koenraad Jonckheere, professor of art history at Ghent University and author of the bestseller A New History of Western Art, Micha Leeflang, curator at the Museum Catharijneconvent, and Sven Van Dorst, head of the restoration studio at The Phoebus Foundation, and others.
