  • Collaborating with Parents to Reduce Childrens

The Incredible Years Collaborating with Parents to Reduce Childrens

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisApproximately 2/3 of all children referred to mental health agencies are labelled as having Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. These children are at increased risk for poor outcomes including academic failure, deviant peer groups, drug use, violence, and delinquency. Identifying and treating these children as early as possible offers promise for strengthening child protective factors such as social, emotional, and academic competence and effective parenting, thereby preventing and reducing the development of conduct problems and other secondary risk factors. The book has two elements -- first it allows parents to tell their stories: sharing what it is like to have a "problem" child as well as the long and painful route to finding support and recovery through parent and child training. The book also elucidates in detail the "collaborative process" of therapists working together with families. This process combines the knowledge and expertise of the clinician with the unique strengths, perspectives, culture and goals of parents. Essentially the goal is to empower parents by making them active partners in the therapy process, teaching them parenting strategies to cope effectively with their child and strengthen their relationship as well as build support networks. The book uses case examples to illustrate these points and provides examples of how to tailor the parent programs for high-risk populations and multicultural families. Examples of when and how to add adjunct therapies such as child and teacher training are also discussed, providing a comprehensive guide for the collaborative process for therapists using the Incredible Years® programs.Table of ContentsIntroduction to Child Conduct Disorders; Overview of Treatment Approaches and Research; Parenting a Child with Conduct Disorders: "Families Under Siege"; Content of Incredible Years® Parenting Pyramid Foundation--Building Children's Social and Emotional Competence; Content of Incredible Years® Parenting Pyramid Foundation: Typical Parent Questions; Content of Incredible Years® Parenting Pyramid Discipline: Reducing Children's Behavior Problems; Content of Incredible Years® Parenting Pyramid Discipline: Typical Questions; Working with Parents of Children with Conduct Problems: The Collaborative Process Using Theory Driven Clinical Principles; Therapist Roles in Facilitating the Collaborative Learning Process; Parents Undergoing Therapy: An Experience of Gaining Knowledge and Control; Affirming Diversity: Maintaining Program Fidelity while Achieving Cultural Sensitivity; The Incredible Years Child Dinosaur Social; Emotional and Problem-Solving Skills Program; Tailoring the IY Parent and Child Programs for Child Welfare Referred Families; Case Example: Targeting Multiple Areas of Risk with a Coordinated Approach; Epilogue and Future Directions.

  • Snapshots: A Story of Love, Loss & Life

Granville Island Publishing Snapshots: A Story of Love, Loss & Life

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWith the help of snapshots, moments frozen in time, Cathy Sosnowsky relives her dark passage through a mother''s worst nightmares: a painful illegal abortion followed by the loss of her daughter, Suzannah, who died shortly after birth; the accidental death of her beloved "gift child", Alex, at age 17; and the loss of her two adopted children, Michael and Tanya, each of whom, at age 14, turned to drugs, prostitution, and a life on the streets. Somehow, through her heartbreak, Cathy found a way to hold on, and, in some ways, to prevail. Her devastation at losing Alex gave rise to the published poet and to the healer who has helped countless bereaved parents all over the world. And through the crucible of suffering came unexpected rebirths -- being a grandmother to Ainsley, the baby she tried to talk Tanya out of having; her son Michael''s transformation from criminal to successful international ESL teacher; and her marriage to Woldy, strengthened through trials that few couples survive. Although triumphant, "Snapshots" is not the story of a perfect human being. A major strength of this memoir is Cathy''s honest account of her failings and challenges -- the times when a gin and tonic was the high point of her day; the times when she shut her adopted children out of her heart; the times when her grief consumed her so completely that suicide seemed like an option. "Snapshots" reminds us that a good life arises less from luck and more from finding ways to abide with, and perhaps transcend our misfortunes. It also reminds us that it is by her faith, persistence, and courage that a woman gives birth to what can never be lost -- herself. Cathy Sosnowsky''s inspiring story proves Simone de Beauvoir''s famous words: "One is not born a woman, one becomes one".

  • Chicken Poop for the Soul: In Search of Food

Caitlin Press Chicken Poop for the Soul: In Search of Food

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFood sovereignty goes beyond addressing the need to secure a daily food source. Food sovereignty means having the right to determine where your food comes from and how it is produced. In 2008, alarmed by the impact agro-business was having on Canadian food quality and security, Kristeva Dowling decided to take control of her own food source. In an attempt to achieve 100 percent self-sufficiency on her small holding in BC''s Bella Coola Valley, she ploughed under her land, converted her garage to an intensive care unit for chickens and learned to hunt, fish, gather and preserve her own food. In the tradition of the "back-to-the-landers" of the ''60s, Dowling sheds the habits of her urban life and, with no agricultural background, begins an emotional and political journey towards independence. Dowling''s story is a witty, humorous and often bizarre journey of trial and error. Between rendering maple syrup, mothering baby chicks, canning hundreds of pounds of preserves, tracking wild game and growing her own wheat, Dowling finds time to reflect on her new-found tangible skills, her intangible problems and the politics and legislative barriers that face BC''s small farming community. This book is about a common dream: to leave the city and return to a simpler life. It is a story of success, failure and determination, which is guaranteed to make you laugh, shake your head in disbelief and get damned angry.

Book Synopsis"Traditional food production and food economies have changed drastically as a result of social, economic, and political influences. A decrease in subsistence production and consumption of country food and concomitant increase in imported and prepared food has brought increased health risks. But neither are country foods without risk, with impacts of contamination, climate, and cultural change. Contributions from a 5-year multi-disciplinary study examine the impacts of development and environmental change, conservation, co-management and quota systems, fur boycotts and anti-sealing lobbies, the disruption of traditional distribution networks, impacts of new technologies, transportation and infrastructure, the influence of wage economies, market forces, social policies, as well as legal and jurisdictional influences. Issues and their intensity vary between regions of the circumarctic, but many common themes emerge. Introduction by Gerard Duhaime and Nick Bernard. • A Guide to the Polycystic Ovary: Its Effects on

TFM Publishing Ltd A Guide to the Polycystic Ovary: Its Effects on

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisSeveral studies have looked at populations of volunteers, women from the electoral roll and women attending general practices, and have reported the ultrasound appearance of polycystic ovaries in as many as one in three to one in five. If groups of women with irregular periods are looked at, up to 90% will have polycystic ovaries at ultrasound. Similarly, when women with increased facial and body hair are screened, about 90% will have polycystic ovaries, as will three out of four women with acne. It has also been suggested by some studies that women with recurrent miscarriage or early pregnancy loss after in-vitro fertilisation have an increased incidence of polycystic ovaries. However, not all studies support this hypothesis, and additional research is needed to evaluate this further. This book looks at the historical background of this condition; the structure and function of the female genital organs; symptoms and signs; diagnostic techniques; the inheritance of polycystic ovary syndrome; long-term effects; lifestyle factors; polycystic ovaries and the skin; ovulation induction; surgical treatment to induce ovulation; in-vitro fertilisation; pregnancy outcomes.

TFM Publishing Ltd Staying alive after 35: The bare essentials

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThis remarkable book is long overdue. It provides the insights essential for the lay reader to take personal control of their long-term health, and physical and emotional well-being. It empowers and educates the non-doctor like no book before it. The complexities and limitations of both modern medicine and alternative therapies, are explained in a way that is entertaining and easy to understand. More importantly however, the book provides access to state-of-the-art advice, not only for effective diet and weight control, but also for side-stepping Syndrome X and the other common serious illnesses, that confront all of us in the new millennium. Using a patient-centred and evidence-based approach, it reflects the dramatic changes in the way medical care will be delivered in the future i.e. as an equal and mutually respectful partnership between well-informed patient and hopefully, well-informed doctor. Although written to provide the perfect medical advice manual for the lay public, the book is an excellent source of current medical knowledge, relating to the common diseases, and provokes and challenges in such a way, that it is likely to be widely read by the profession at large.

Book SynopsisDespite the current emphasis on ''healthy eating'' obesity has been increasing at an alarming rate, especially in children, and chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease are reaching epidemic levels. Barry Groves tells us that this is because ''healthy eating'' is anything but that; it is far too high in carbohydrates, especially refined carbs, and far too low in fats. Unlike carbohydrates, or proteins, fats do not compromise our insulin levels. They keep our metabolism functioning at a healthily high level and they stop us getting hungry too quickly. And they do not raise our cholesterol levels. Based on years of research, and personal experience, this book tells us how to change our diets and what the benefits of doing so will be. Practical and clearly explained, you cannot read this book without realising it is time to change.

  • Fighting Fatigue

    Hammersmith Press Limited Fighting Fatigue

Book SynopsisChronic fatigue syndrome, or myalgic encephalitis, (CFS/ME) affects approximately 180,000 people in the UK. In addition to persistent and abnormal tiredness, sufferers commonly experience muscle pain, headaches, sleep disturbance and loss of concentration as well as a huge range of other symptoms. At its worst it can be completely disabling and yet it is still poorly understood and often regarded as purely psychological. This makes it doubly difficult for sufferers and their carers to cope with. This practical manual comes from a nationally recognized centre for the condition and is jointly written by health professionals and their patients. They give straightforward and specific expert advice, accompanied by real life stories, on managing different aspects of everyday life that can affect energy and they show how to put this advice into practice. They understand the way fatigue affects concentration and therefore break their guidance into easy-to-follow steps that can be worked through at the reader's own pace. Unlike other available books, this does not cover causes, symptoms or the controversy around whether the condition is 'real'. It is purely about how to get better. It is for patients who have been diagnosed with CFS/ME and for their carers. It is also highly relevant to health professionals wanting to provide their patients with self-help strategies that are compatible with the current evidence base. Anyone suffering ongoing, abnormal fatigue will likewise find it a 'must read'.Table of Contents1. What we know about CFS/ME; 2. Grading activity - the effect of activity on energy levels and how to break it down into manageable parts; 3. Rest - understanding rest and improving its quality; 4. Sleep - normal sleep patterns and factors that can affect them; 5. Diet - how food relates to energy; 6. Stress and relaxation - the physiological relationship between demand and energy and how to reduce stress; 7. 5 in stock

Book Synopsis''I was musing on Singapore in all its affluent glory still having shrines for the dead on every street corner during The Festival of the Hungry Ghosts''. Then I was musing on how the socially mobile of modern western society eschew death rites and grieving in the name of ''holding it together'' and being progressive. I thought of which civilizations are falling and which are rising again, and wondered whether acknowledging death and the ancestors is a vital part of a maintaining personal identity and our place in society. I remember how my grieving father mourned for all the information he had relied on his deceased wife remembering; information which was now lost. I recalled Michael Crichton''s words If you don''t know (your family''s) history, then you don''t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn''t know it is part of a tree.'' Then I thought maybe someone should write about the cults of the ancestors and death, perhaps an anthology, perhaps cross relate experiences of loss to personal spirituality and magick and history. I know that years of working with the dead in the name of art and spirituality, didn''t prepare me for the death of my mother. What helped me was the advice of someone from a long tradition of working with the ancestors. I think that collecting the experiences of spiritual practitioners in their working with grief and death is part of a living and necessary tradition that will give respect to the dead and strength, identity and support to our own personal spirituality.'' Within this book are rituals, stories, traditions and experiences of magicians'' scholars and artists who work with death. Some of the contributors such as Nema, Mogg Morgan, Louis Martine and Nevill Drury (to name but a few) have helped define contemporary transformative spirituality. Others are less well known but just as learned. As there should be in such a collection there is comedy, anger confrontation and practicality. This anthology is about who we are, and where we come from. It is also about how we change. A Contemporary Western Book of the Dead contains voices and visions that acknowledge our past, feed our present and guide the direction of our future.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisMany people are interested in dreams but few have much of interest to say about them. This book is different and worth attention. It began as a simple question, any one of us might ask: Why do some people have success and money, while others spend their lives scraping spare change together for the most basic of things? Why do certain people always seem to make the right decisions & come out on top, even when they get some things wrong? (p8) The surprising answer lay in the world of dreams, their interpretation and of how some dreamers have made self-analysis such as useful personal resource. The author shares many personal experiences as well as those drawn from a general survey of peoples dream world. She explores the entire scene from Sigmund Freud up to more recent guides for the perplexed. She goes deep, revealing over 100 dream symbols, anything from new houses, through dream lovers to aliens. Not revealing the content of a dream to another, at least until you have interpreted and gained from it. This, just one secret she gleaned. Dreams are postcards, straight from your subconscious, telling you about you. One of her informants told a colleague, whom she had hitherto trusted, of a strange dream she had just had about a mutual colleague. then watched mortified as her otherwise trusted but obviously jealous colleague, strode boldly to the dream subject, and told them all the gory details. But the dream was not necessarily about anyone in particular, their appearance was most likely the personification of anxiety about an unfamiliar working environment. A secret unwanted admirer or personification of someones angst - better not say anything? The author is drawing upon the wisdom of sages and writers from times past. All of which shows how dreams reveal the blocks that are holding one''s life up. Along the way, she explores those uncharted depths of consciousness. And shows how successful people have always tuned into the subconscious, conversing with so-called dream counsellors who really did change their future.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Tarot is one of the richest of all Western mystical traditions, used for centuries for divination, meditation and self-discovery. This book offers a brilliant practical overview for the modern seeker who wishes to use this system to explore their hidden anxieties, desires, tensions and contradictions. Destiny is not a set of circumstances dreamed up randomly by fate but a path that unfolds from self-understanding. This book shows how the Tarot can be used to illuminate that path. The author describes the history and symbolism of the Tarot, and then goes on to clarify in detail the meanings of the individual cards of the Major and Minor Arcana and the special characteristics of the four suits (Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles). An original and very helpful section explains how to deal and read the cards in tried-and-tested formats, such as the Horseshoe and the Celtic Cross. To illustrate the book David Fontana has chosen a much-acclaimed, specially devised deck, using traditional symbolism rooted in medieval and Renaissance practice. However, the text applies equally well to other popular decks in modern use, such as the Rider-Waite deck.An invaluable feature of the book is the selection of special workshops - readings and interpretations, based on the circumstances of individual seekers.
