Book SynopsisAs a trainee doctor, Andrew Lees was enthralled by his mentors: esteemed neurologists who combined the precision of mathematicians, the scrupulosity of entomologists and the solemnity of undertakers in their diagnoses and treatments. For them, there was no such thing as an unexplained symptom or psychosomatic problem-no difficult cases, only interesting ones-and it was only a matter of time before all disorders of the brain would be understood in terms of anatomical, electrical, and chemical connections. Today, this kind of "holistic neurology" is on the brink of extinction as a slavish adherence to protocols and algorithms-plus a worship of machines-runs the risk of destroying the key foundational clinical skills of listening, observation and imagination that have been at the heart of the discipline for over 150 years. In this series of brilliant, insightful, and autobiographical essays, Andrew Lees takes us on a kind of Sherlock Holmes tour of neurology, giving the reader insight into-and a defense of-the deep analytical tools that the best neurologists still rely on to diagnose patients: to heal minds and to fix brains.Trade Review‘A. J. Lees’s exquisitely produced Brainspotting is a gem… Alongside this genial recounting of his approach to his work, Lees offers sketches of neurologists by whom he was taught or who have influenced his thinking and recollections of institutions where he has worked… I loved this book. If ever I fall victim to a neurological disorder, I can only hope to God I come under the benign and intelligent care of Lees.’ Sally Vickers, Literary Review -- Salley Vickers * Literary Review *"A fascinating and riveting book. A.J. Lees is that rare phenomenon: a literary stylist of the first rank who combines a fine aesthetic sensibility with deep scientific knowledge... After reading this book, you will never feel the same about the words mind, body and soul." —Andrew Hussey “An exceptional compendium of marvellous phenomena that can captivate the imagination of students and neurologists to this day. . . . Lees’ writing style combines anatomical precision with ethereal poetry, which is reflected in his practice and teachings. . . . Brainspotting is a vibrant testimony of Lees’ love for clinical neurology, the value of observation in a world of randomised trials, and a melancholic battle cry against hasty, profit-driven, virtual, touchless, ‘scan-negative’ medicine. The book reminds us that the art of clinical neurology allows for remarkable discoveries nearly everywhere, provided that our senses remain open and clear.” —The Lancet “The inevitable comparison of Lees with the late, great Oliver Sacks is entirely just.” —Raymond Tallis “A subtle, brilliant and unputdownable appeal for the place of the human factor in the practise of neurology during the age of fMRI and Google. . . . A remarkable book.” —Robert McCrum

Book Synopsis'It was the most liberating thing that ever happened to me, having children. The children's demands on me were things that nobody else ever asked me to do.' -Toni Morrison Children are a miracle, and everyone has an opinion on how we should raise them. From novelists to paediatricians; from Enlightenment philosophers to experimental psychologists; from parenting 'experts' to people whose expertise is simply - and powerfully - being a parent, Tiny Feet is the first anthology of its kind, showcasing a range of influential writing about children over the past four hundred years. Introduced by Lauren Child, and with contributions from Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Maria Montessori, Dr Spock, D. W. Winnicott, Toni Morrison and many more, this ideal gift book for soon-to-be parents shows the extent to which some of our attitudes have changed while others remain absolute, and reminds us of the joy that children bring to our lives.Trade Review"For parents in the throes of babydom: Tiny Feet is a slim miscellany of historical and literary extracts about how children see the world and how adults see children. Introduced with humor and charm by author and illustrator Lauren Child, this collection offers perspectives that are sometimes captivating, sometimes amusingly anachronistic....Small enough to fit in a Christmas stocking, Tiny Feet is ideal for browsing in fugitive moments of calm amid the squalls." —Meghan Cox Gurdon, The Wall Street Journal "Showcasing a range of the most influential writing about children over the past four hundred years. . . . the extracts featured in this delightful compendium show the extent to which some of our attitudes have changed while others remain absolute, and remind us of the joy that children have always brought to our lives." —Motherwell

At the beginning he only makes small mistakes, forgetting first names and taking home the wrong child from his grandson's kindergarten, but he knows that things will only get worse. He's 73 and a retired road engineer. His neurologist hints at the path his illness might take and suggests ways of comabtting it, with the help of his wife Dina.Dina, a respected paediatrician, is keen for him to return to meaningful activity, and suggests he volunteers to work with his old colleagues at the Israel Roads Authority. Book Synopsis“A bold attempt to portray the greyness of growing up without roots or identity, cast adrift in an uncomprehending and uncertain world.” Caroline Moorehead, Times Literary Supplement.March, 1945. The ravaged face of London will soon be painted with victory, but for Sylvie, the private battle for peace is just beginning. When one of her twins is stillborn, she is faced with a consuming grief for the child she never had a chance to hold. A Small Dark Quiet follows a mother as she struggles to find the courage to rebuild her life and care for an orphan whom she and her husband, Gerald, adopt two years later.Born in a concentration camp, the orphan’s early years appear punctuated with frail speculations, opening up a haunting space that draws Sylvie to bring him into parallel with the child she lost. When she gives the orphan the stillborn child’s name, this unwittingly entangles him in a grief he will never be able to console. His own name has been erased, his origins blurred. Arthur’s preverbal trauma begins to merge with the loss he carries for Sylvie, released in nightmares and fragments of emerging memories to make his life that of a boy he never knew. He learns all about ‘that other little Arthur’, yearning both to become him and to free himself from his ghost. He can neither fit the shape of the life that has been lost nor grow into the one his adopted father has carved out for him.As the novel unfolds over the next twenty years, Arthur becomes curious about his Jewish heritage, but fears what this might entail – drawn towards it, it seems he might find a sense of communion and acceptance, but the chorus of persecutory voices he has internalised becomes too overwhelming to bear. He is threatened as a child with being sent back where he belongs but no one can tell him where this is. He wanders as an adult looking for purpose but is unable to find his place. Feeling an imposter both at home and in the city, Arthur’s yearning for that sense of belonging echoes in our own time. Meeting Lydia seems to offer Arthur the opportunity to recast himself, yet all too soon he is trapped in a repetition of what he was trying to escape. A past he can neither recall nor forget lives on within him even as he strives to forge a life for himself. Survival, though, insists Arthur keeps searching and as he opens himself to the world around him, there are flashes of just how resilient the human heart can be. Through Sylvie’s unprocessed grief and Arthur’s acute sense of displacement, A Small Dark Quiet explores how the compulsion to fill the empty space death leaves behind ultimately makes the devastating void more acute. Yet however frail, the instinct for empathy and hope persists in this powerful story of loss, migration and the search for belonging.

  • Depression: An Introduction

    Karnac Books Depression: An Introduction

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book attempts to do justice to the depth and complexity of depression – as to its causes and its treatment in psychotherapy. It challenges the reductive medical view of depression as a serotonin deficiency resulting in a collection of undesirable symptoms to be dispatched with antidepressants or CBT exercises. Rather, it locates the origins of depression in childhood adversity, primarily caused by unattuned, cold, critical, hostile or abusive caregiving. Insecure attachment interacts with other elements of a stressful life history as well as with genetic makeup to pave the way for depression. Such a childhood has long-term impacts on the setting of the stress and threat responses of the nervous system. Depression fundamentally indicates a weak and non-resilient sense of self, coupled with limited capacities for trust and either autonomy or intimacy in relationships. These are the issues that must be tackled in psychotherapy. Since depression carries a message for the sufferer, it must be investigated for its meaning. Why has the individual withdrawn from life and what are they being asked to change in how they live and relate? Before this reparative and creative phase of therapy can begin, however, we must remember that depression is not just ‘low’ mood but also ‘stuck’ mood. Rigid beliefs and processes that block therapeutic engagement can be gently questioned by helping the client see that they are held by only one part of the self, whereas other ‘for growth’ parts carry hope and a willingness to play and explore. Overall, it is crucial in working with depression to see and to relate to the client as a whole person; not simply a bundle of cognitive shortcomings to be corrected, but as an emotional, organismic, relational, existential and spiritual being. Depression: An Introduction presents a biopsychosocial model, combining developmental and attachment perspectives with genetics and neurobiology. Its therapeutic orientation is humanistic and integrative but has much to offer anyone wanting to know more about this widely known but little understood condition.Trade Review‘The plainness of [the] title belies the freshness, rigour and creative synthesis of up-to-date thinking in the book. Both broad and deep in perspective … Dowds does justice to the complexity of depression. … This is a truly fascinating read and will be of great interest to anyone who really wants to understand what depression is’ -- Roz Carroll, co-editor with Jane Ryan of ‘What is Normal? Psychotherapists Explore the Question’‘The most helpful book I’ve ever read about understanding and working with depression … skimps on neither scope nor substance. Dowds covers everything from evolutionary theories of depression to the impacts of globalisation and social media, taking in epigenetics and economic status, gender and gut flora. She conveys a strong sense of the emotional, cognitive, somatic, existential and relational qualities of depression, and shares many practical ways of engaging with its different dimensions. And she still finds space to recurrently sound, and deepen, her key developmental themes.’ -- Isobel Todd, psychodynamic counsellor, SCAP no. 141 (Summer 2021) sussex-counselling.co.uk‘The focus on depression as an immediate and common experience that is on the increase (while being hard to work with), marks this book out as essential reading not just for therapists and trainees, but for anyone interested in deepening and expanding their knowledge and awareness of the impact of depression, its evolution and manifestation within the context of contemporary society.’ -- Pauline Macey, MIACP, IJCP Vol. 21 Issue 3 (Autumn 2021)‘well worth reading for anyone who wants to reacquaint themselves with the theory and practice in relation to depression and also those who may want pointers as to how to keep up to date with the latest thinking in the field.’ -- Eleanor Dunn IAHAP, ‘Inside Out’ Issue 95 (Autumn 2021)Table of Contents Acknowledgements About the author Foreword by Roz Carroll Preface Part I Incidence, causes, and consequences of depression CHAPTER 1 An anatomy of depression CHAPTER 2 Biological causes and consequences CHAPTER 3 An application of neuroscience CHAPTER 4 Childhood origins and adult triggers Part II Psychotherapy: mobilisation and meaning CHAPTER 5 The message from within: moving towards authenticity CHAPTER 6 The therapeutic challenges of stuck mood CHAPTER 7 Repairing the self, building resilience CHAPTER 8 Brigid’s story Final thoughts Glossary References Index

Scribe Publications The Woman Who Cracked the Anxiety Code: the

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe true story of the little-known mental-health pioneer who revolutionised how we see the defining problem of our era: anxiety. Panic, depression, sorrow, guilt, disgrace, obsession, sleeplessness, low confidence, loneliness, agoraphobia … Dr Claire Weekes knew how to treat them, but was dismissed as underqualified and overly populist by the psychiatric establishment. In a radical move, she had gone directly to the people. Her international bestseller Self Help for Your Nerves, first published in 1962 and still in print, helped tens of millions of people to overcome all of these, and continues to do so. Weekes pioneered an anxiety treatment that is now at the cutting edge of modern psychotherapies. Her early explanation of fear, and its effect on the nervous system, is state of the art. Psychologists use her method, neuroscientists study the interaction between different fear circuits in the brain, and many psychiatrists are revisiting the mind–body connection that was the hallmark of her unique work. Face, accept, float, let time pass: hers was the invisible hand that rewrote the therapeutic manual. This understanding of the biology of fear could not be more contemporary — ‘acceptance’ is the treatment du jour, and all mental-health professionals explain the phenomenon of fear in the same way she did so many years ago. However, most of them are unaware of the debt they have to a woman whose work has found such a huge public audience. This book is the first to tell that story, and to tell Weekes’ own remarkable tale, of how a mistaken diagnosis of tuberculosis led to heart palpitations, beginning her fascinating journey to a practical treatment for anxiety that put power back in the hands of the individual.Trade Review‘Judith Hoare delves deep into the life of the visionary doctor and shows that it was by learning to deal with her own crippling anxiety that she could assist with others.’ -- John Meagher * Irish Independent *‘By thinking outside the box, and exercising extraordinary clinical sensitivity, the brilliant physician Claire Weekes created a treatment protocol to the unending benefit of tens of millions of patients over the years.’ -- Dr David Barlow, professor emeritus of psychology and psychiatry at Boston University‘It’s truly astonishing that Dr Claire Weekes is not a household name … this book shines a light on her considerable achievements with great respect and meticulous detail.’ * Leigh Sales *‘This well-documented book is a superb look at how an Australian woman made such a difference to many … The author has done her job magnificently.’ * NB Magazine *‘Australian doctor Claire Weekes found worldwide fame with her bestselling books on ‘nervous illness’ in the 1960s and 1970s — but despite gratitude from thousands of sufferers, she is almost forgotten today. This revelatory biography should change that … Journalist Judith Hoare has comprehensively captured the unconventional life of this brilliant woman who was lauded for her evolutionary studies.’ FOUR STARS -- Julia Taylor * Books + Publishing *‘A vivid portrait of an intriguing woman ahead of her time, this is a story of hope, empowerment, and vindication.’ -- Gina Perry, author of Behind the Shock Machine and The Lost Boys‘With Judith Hoare’s The Woman Who Cracked the Anxiety Code, we have a chance to learn about Weekes’s varied life and, as important, become reacquainted with her work … A splendid tribute to Claire Weekes — a tribute long overdue.’ -- Sally Satel * Wall Street Journal *‘An intimate portrait ... Book SynopsisA COSMOPOLITAN BEST NON-FICTION BOOK OF 2022 The Lonely Hunter explores the rise of singledom, the realities of loneliness, and whether it is possible to live contentedly alone. ‘So what’s going on in your love life?’ This seemingly innocent question at a dinner party prompted Aimée Lutkin to finally tell the truth: it had been six years since her last relationship, and she was starting to suspect that it would be better to accept the life she had as a single woman — a life she liked very much — rather than keep searching for a partner. But Lutkin’s answer was met with uproar; surely she couldn’t give up on love? So she threw herself into dating, going on two dates every week over a number of months. Documenting her experiences, Lutkin explores the reality of sexual relationships today and reveals how the cultural messages we receive shape our expectations of love. From weird Tinder hookups to the way the self care industry capitalises on our fear of being alone, and from the complexities of queer dating to the truth about the ‘loneliness epidemic’, she uses her experiences to fearlessly tell a wider story about how we love now.Trade Review‘A funny, honest and confronting account that challenges views about being single in a world built for couples.’ * The Sunday Times *‘A Sex and the City for mid-30s millennials that is confessional, ironic, and fun … Lutkin injects a fresh anti-glamour into her escapades.’ -- Fried Klotz * Sunday Independent *‘A brilliant reframing of the cultural narrative around singledom with an impassioned defence of its pleasures ... It might seem like a depressing topic, but I laughed so hard and learned so much.’ -- Blythe Roberson, author of How to Date Men When You Hate Men‘Wry, smart, full of bittersweet detail and vivid scenes, The Lonely Hunter is engaging without giving in to easy answers and is willing to ask the big questions — what makes a good life, and what do we want from each other?’ -- Rosalie Knetch, author of the Vera Kelly novels‘Interesting and thoughtful.’ -- James Greig * Dazed *‘At once heartbreaking and deeply funny, Lutkin’s The Lonely Hunter captures the essence of seemingly endless singlehood in a world built for couples. As vulnerable as she is illuminative, Lutkin achieves what so many of us singles are looking for — she makes us feel less alone.’ -- Rebecca Fishbein, author of Good Things Happen to People You Hate‘I’m not sure how one could read The Lonely Hunter and NOT fall in love with Aimée Lutkin! Her memoir is at once a tender, vivacious consideration of modern romance and an incisive cultural study of American loneliness — a great and heartwarming achievement.’ -- Rachel Vorona Cote, author of Too Much‘[The Lonely Hunter is an] astute, poignant, meditation on the single life, as well as dating, sex and connection.’ * The Sydney Morning Herald *‘Part memoir, part cultural criticism, The Lonely Hunter reveals society’s pathologising of love and loneliness for an insightful and full-of-heart read.’ * Denizen *‘A blend of memoir and reportage, The Lonely Hunter will convince you that our “search for love is broken”, whether you’re single or not.’ * Vogue *

Book SynopsisBy the New York Times bestselling authors of The Whole-Brain Child and No-Drama Discipline. What’s the one thing a parent can do to make the most difference to their child in the long term? The research is clear: be present, show up! One of the best predictors for any child’s future happiness and success is whether at least one adult in their life has consistently shown up for them. With all of today’s demands and distractions, this might sound like a tall order. But as bestselling parenting experts Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson reassuringly explain, showing up doesn’t take a lot of time, energy, or money. It’s simple to do once you understand the four building blocks of a child’s healthy development: making them feel safe, seen, soothed, and secure. Based on the latest brain and attachment research, The Power of Showing Up shares stories, scripts, simple strategies, illustrations, and tips for when our kids are struggling or when they’re enjoying success; when we’re consoling, disciplining, or arguing with them; and even when we’re apologising for the times we haven’t shown up for them. Demonstrating that it’s never too late to correct mistakes and mend broken trust, this is a powerful guide to cultivating your child’s healthy emotional landscape.Trade Review‘In this encouraging and empowering book, psychiatrist Siegel (Aware) and clinical social worker Bryson provide steps for parents and caregivers to help children attain success and “feel at home in the world” ... Thanks to this excellent work, Siegel and Payne will leave readers with an empathetic and helpful philosophy to apply to their own parenting.’ * Publishers Weekly *‘At a cultural moment when many kids feel more competition with their parents’ devices than with their siblings, Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson have spun a miracle — The Power of Showing Up is the ultimate guide to family reconnection. Clear, profound, and charmingly illustrated, it unravels the challenges of modern parenting and reveals the simple truths about what children really need from the adults in their lives.’ -- Dr Wendy Mogel, New York Times bestselling author of The Blessing of a Skinned Knee and The Blessing of a B Minus‘Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson have written their best book yet — and that is saying a lot. They have distilled their parenting wisdom — based on neuroscience research and a deep empathy for children’s needs — into a profound concept: showing up. It is one of those great ideas that seems so obvious — but only after someone has shown it to you and spelled it out clearly. Best of all, Siegel and Bryson “show up” for the reader of this book. They know parents, know their fears and anxieties, hopes and dreams. They know that showing up for children is harder than it sounds, and they provide an accessible path to seeing and soothing children and providing them with safety and security.’ -- Lawrence J. Cohen, PhD, author of Playful Parenting‘This hopeful new book goes to the heart of every parent’s greatest wish: to raise a child who grows up to be a secure adult. In an unpredictable world, that can feel almost impossible. Drs Siegel and Bryson teach us how a parent can make a child feel safe, seen, soothed and secure, even if he or she didn't have that in their own childhoods. There is parenting magic in this book.’ -- Michael Thompson, PhD, co-author of the New York Times bestselling classic, Raising Cain‘Parenting at this moment in time and at today’s pace feels hard. But that makes it all that much more important that we try to simplify the process of parenting and not put quite so much pressure on our own parenting shoulders. The Power Showing Up will help you do just that. Dan Siegel and Tina Payne are master teachers when it comes to helping parents react and respond to kids in ways that communicate “I hear you”. They articulate and quantify how to make your parenting easier — and better!’ -- Christine Carter, PhD, author of Raising Happiness‘The Power of Showing Up is an essential book for every parent who yearns to be more effective and present and, simply, better. It shows us that we don’t have to be perfect, but we can make our kids feel more secure and confident (now and in the future) if we are present and aware as parents. This important book gives us the steps to follow to make this happen.’ -- Dr Harold S. Koplewicz, president, Child Mind Institute‘Rarely does a book so broad and deep of subject give you the small do-able steps to find your way to success, confidence, and connection with your children. The Power of Showing Up brings to life the Zulu greeting “Sawubona” (I see you) and the refrain “Ngikhona” (I am here), which are essential for the parent-child connection.’ -- Kim John Payne, author of Simplicity Parenting and The Soul of Discipline‘Siegel and Bryson provide relatable real world examples and ... specific advice for handling various situations ... Parents looking for solid research delivered in an accessible manner will find Siegel and Bryson getting the job done well yet again.’ * Booklist *‘A fitting volume that expands on the authors’ previous work, filled with cartoons and straightforward strategies that will appeal to their fans as well as a wide range of general readers.’ STARRED REVIEW -- Julia M. Reffner * Library Journal *‘Dan Siegel and Tina Bryson have channeled all of their knowledge of child development into perhaps the most difficult yet important aspect of raising a child: showing up. The constant distractions that tempt us away from what is most important in life make The Power of Showing Up a necessary book for anyone raising a child in the digital age.’ -- Jeff Stibel, New York Times bestselling author of Breakpoint‘Offering strategies in communication, understanding and personal insight, The Power of Showing Up is a clear, compassionate instructional guide to the significant ways a shift in parental behaviour can and will affect a child. Highly recommended for parents, guardians and educators seeking insight for themselves and their children.’ * Shelf Awareness *Praise for Aware: Meditation strengthens our attention, opens our awareness, and helps us cultivate compassion and kind intention, which have been shown to improve our health and our relationships. • Affairs

The School of Life Press Affairs

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOur societies are remarkably confident on the matter: affairs are terrible things and only fools, monsters and knaves would ever be involved in them. Those who are their victims deserve unending sympathy and access to a good lawyer. This stance may be clear, but it is not especially helpful or productive - given that, in reality, 1 in 4 of us are going to end up involved in an affair during our lifetime. This is a book written to increase our understanding of what is really at stake in affairs: it looks at why affairs happen and ventures beyond black and white caricatures. It delves into the question of what unfaithful sex means and why, despite the risks, it happens so often. Most importantly, the book seeks to help us through affairs, offering couples a better understanding of each other’s motivations and moods - and, where desirable, a way to save a relationship. We have for too long either openly condemned or secretly lusted after affairs: this, finally, is a chance to understand them.

Part memoir, part family history, Overlap is a series of vivid vignettes from the poet’s childhood, courtship, motherhood and grandmotherhood, spanning the 20th and 21st centuries. Bence’s grandmothers Winifred and Harriet are at the heart of this book. She reflects on their hardy, steadfast lives as she too becomes a grandmother, in very different times. Stranded from her family in the Covid-19 pandemic, the poet conjures up their ghosts, walks in their footsteps and – sometimes – feels herself become them.Trade Review‘That Bence had her first successes later in life has perhaps impacted how the writer deals with memory and displays perspicacity. Book Synopsis What do you really know about how children learn? How helpful are different types of assessment and what do the results mean? Is homework necessary and how you can you encourage your child at home? Will ability groups and setting help your child achieve more? How do you choose the right school to suit your child? The government and the media have a lot to say about education, but what is the evidence behind these debates? This book walks you through all the most important issues in education, comparing commonly-held beliefs with simple summaries of the evidence, providing you with clear, jargon-free information. It covers topics including school choice, testing and assessment, homework and revision, primary- and secondary-specific topics, stress and mental health, and special needs. Most importantly it ensures you will be able to ask schools the right questions, interact positively with teachers and effectively support your child throughout their education. "Chris & Stuart have written a parent's guide that is jam packed with practical advice, research and informative summaries that any parent can use to support their child to succeed at school. It's organised so you can easily dip in and out when looking for information and guidance, and gives answers to questions that parents may have about their child's education. I recommend this book to all parents & guardians that want to work alongside their child's school to get the best out of their time there." -- Dawn Cox * Teacher and Blogger *"Perhaps the most common question I was asked by parents, over my time teaching in secondary schools, was how they might help their son or daughter achieve more and get the most out of their time in school. It was a very difficult question to answer! Learning, assessment, behaviour and how to support pupils with motivation are areas where teachers often struggle to keep up with the evidence, what chance is there for a parent to keep up with that emerging body of evidence and the changes occurring in the school system? For me, this is why Chris Atherton and Stuart Kime’s book represents an essential contribution. It provides parents with a jargon-free introduction to the evidence which is starting to inform many areas teaching and school policy. Indeed, teachers would also benefit from reading it too! Each chapter provides a clear and accessible starting point to understanding the evidence, along with some great pointers for how to engage with teachers on the topics. I not only wish parents had asked me questions based on the ‘what to talk about on parents’ evening’ sections in each chapter – I wish I’d also read this book to help me provide a better answer to the question, ‘how can I help my son/daughter in school?’." -- Nick Rose * Learning Design Fellow, Ambition Institute *Table of Contents Understanding the education debate School choice The learning process Assessment and testing Putting it into action at home - revision, homework and effective independent study 2-10 year-olds: primary and early years education 11–18 year-olds: secondary education and colleges Behaviour, stress and mental health Special needs How to use the knowledge in this book

Backable people seem to have a hidden quality that inspires others to take action. We often chalk this up to natural talent or charisma . . . either you have 'it' or you don't.After getting rejected by every investor he pitched, Suneel Gupta had a burning question: could 'it' be learned?Drawing lessons from hundreds of the world's biggest thinkers, Suneel discovered how to pitch new ideas in a way that has raised millions of dollars, influenced large-scale change inside massive corporations, and even convinced his 8-year-old daughter to clean her room.Inside the book are long-held secrets from producers of Oscar-winning films, venture capitalists, founders of unicorn-status startups, and executives at iconic companies like Lego, Method and Pixar. Suneel used these invaluable lessons to become the New York Stock Exchange's 'New Face of Innovation'.Backable reveals how the key to success is not charisma, connections, or even your CV, but rather your ability to persuade others to take a chance on you. This groundbreaking book will show you how.
