Jessica Kingsley Publishers Caged in Chaos: A Dyspraxic Guide to Breaking

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWritten by a teenager with dyspraxia, this is a humorous and inspiring practical guide for young adults with dyspraxia and those around them trying to get to grips with the physical, social and psychological chaos caused by developmental co-ordination disorders (DCDs).In her own conversational style, Victoria Biggs explains the primary effects of dyspraxia - disorganization, clumsiness and poor short-term memory - as well as other difficulties that dyspraxic teenagers encounter, such as bullying and low self-esteem. Peppered with personal stories from other teens, this award-winning book offers down-to-earth advice on a wide range of adolescent issues, from puberty, health and hygiene to family life and making friends. The new edition includes an update from the author on her university and work experiences and how dyspraxia affects her now as an adult. Her positive approach and profound empathy with others in her situation make this book a must-read.Trade ReviewCaged in Chaos puts into words what professionals have been unable to, articulating the voices of many of the young people I have had the privilege of working with. The book touches the frustration, pain, humour, and resilience that come with having a cognitive profile consistent with dyspraxia. Adult readers can hear the echoes of their own experience and the young are reassured they are not alone. The pick and mix solutions for day-to-day issues gives just the right level of practical advice. -- From the foreword by Jo Todd, CEO of Key 4 LearningCaged in Chaos is a truly inspiring but humorous book written by a teenager which is aimed at helping other teenagers with dyspraxia. It is a true survivor's guide to how to succeed and follow your dreams regardless of the things which hold you back. I would recommend this book to all young people regardless of their backgrounds. Victoria is a great role model and bravely writes about subjects which most teenagers would keep silent about such as how to deal with periods, first romantic crushes and wardrobe malfunctions. It should be essential reading in all secondary school libraries. -- Maureen Boon, former Headteacher and author of Understanding Dyspraxia and Can I Tell You About Dyspraxia?Written when Victoria was 16 years old, this book is her personal story and one that young people with dyspraxia will all relate to. Inside the book there are many wonderful quotes from people who have dyspraxia. It's fun, easy to read and creatively written, full of tips to help with home life and school. -- Jessica Starns, founder of Dyspraxic Me, a support group for young people with dyspraxiaPraise for the first edition:'I am currently developing new academic programmes and I hoped by reading a personal account of dyspraxia that I would be able to develop some understanding and insight into the condition, which would ultimately inform my teaching. I was not disappointed. This is a book that leaves you with a very strong impression of the impact of dyspraxia on people's lives.' -- The Higher Education AcademyCaged in Chaos is peppered with illustrations and words written by children and young people with dyspraxia and other learning difficulties, and it is easy to understand how helpful Victoria's insights and explanations will be to other dyspraxics, their parents, teachers and other people involved in their lives. The advice Victoria gives is practical and down to earth; she deals with everyday issues such as social skills, body language, health and hygiene, puberty, relationships and family life. -- Dyspraxia NewsThis very informative book, about a young adult who has dyspraxia, is a much needed addition to my library. Although I have worked with children of all ages who have dyspraxia, it is difficult to put yourself in their shoes. The very obvious physical difficulties can be understood, although the effect this has on their self-confidence and esteem is not so obvious. However, the author clearly describes how her life has evolved and the impact her poor organisational skills have had on every aspect of her life. She offers very practical "tips" which have helped her through the very difficult period of life known as adolescence... It is a book I will be recommending to parents and other professionals who work with young people and this disorder. It will be extremely useful for therapists (occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech and language) who are new to this field of paedriatrics. Additionally, I feel that young people who have dyspraxia will also use it as a resource to help them to validate their experiences and feel that someone has understood explicitly what they are experiencing. It is already a well-thumbed book! -- NAPOT (National Assessment of Paediatric Occupational Therapy)The 16-year-old author writes with a spirited and humorous style, using a mature approach to a vast range of topics and revealing her personal strengths and weaknesses with quirky honesty... Ms Biggs' advice is rich and relevant but realistic and practical. I have rarely read a book which offers such a vast range of useful strategies... The author skilfully acknowledges the issues which family members might have while growing up with someone who has dyspraxia, and her recommendations to teachers span generic topics as well as specific curriculum subjects. Her empathy with and support for those who have dyspraxia oozes with apparent ease from everything she writes and I would be surprised if anyone fails to feel empowered and enriched by what she has to offer. -- Good Autism PracticeWritten by a 16 year old with dyspraxia, this book provides a profound and humbling insight into an often misunderstood condition. It is packed with useful advice on how it feels to be dyspraxic and how to understand the physical, social, emotional and psychological aspects of developmental co-ordination disorder. The effects of short term memory, clumsiness and disorganisation are explored along with bullying, self-esteem and loneliness. The style is conversational, with examples and life experiences from a number of young dyspraxics. Chapters on a survival guide to school, making the grade, and coping with growing up are most useful. Dyspraxia has been described as lying in a parallel universe. This book explores a galaxy of ideas, thoughts, emotions and supportive actions for the classroom and beyond. -- The Teacher, magazine of the National Union of TeachersAs well as the author's individual experience, the book refers to others dyspraxics who are coping with difficulties in a variety of situations... The book also provides tips for teachers to support them in providing reasonable adjustments... the book concludes with advice on matters related to further education; moving into the world of work and day to day living. There is a useful section on addresses and websites were further information can be found... This book will help readers to understand the experiences of those who live with dyspraxia. it is an inspiring read tingled with both humour and sadness. -- SNIPThis charming and fun book offers a comprehensive account of dyspraxia together with plenty of practical tips and pithy quotes from other dyspraxic teenagers recounting their personal experiences... includes a list of useful addresses and websites for information and support on bullying, advocacy, driving, education, independent living and mental health. i highly recommend "Caged in Chaos" to all those affected or involved with dyspraxia, particularly parents and teachers. -- Jacqueline Martin * ask - C.A.R.E. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is not just another book about adoptive parenting. This is the real stuff: dynamic, messy, baffling adoptive parenting, rooted in domestic life.Award-winning columnist and adoptive parent Sally Donovan offers savvy, compassionate advice on how to be 'good enough' in the face of both day-to-day and more bewildering challenges – how to respond to 'red mist' meltdowns, crippling anxieties about new routines and, most importantly, how to meet the intimidating challenge of being strong enough to protect and nurture your child. Full of affecting and hilarious stories drawn from life in the Donovan household, The Unofficial Guide to Adoptive Parenting offers parents a refreshing counterblast to stuffy parenting manuals -- read it, weep, laugh and learn.Trade ReviewSally Donovan seems to write as naturally as the rest of us breathe. -- Adoption Today magazineIn this new book Sally Donovan communicates powerfully the messy lived experience of daily family life with her two adopted children. In her hopeful, intelligent, moving, witty and psychologically sound reflections adoptive parents will gain a lot of comfort. This book will be an invaluable resource for both parents, extended family and friends and professionals. -- From the foreword by Dr. Vivien Norris, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, DDP Practitioner, Certified Theraplay® Therapist and Trainer, The Family PlaceWhen Sally Donovan asked me to read the draft of her second book I was both delighted and anxious. Delighted because I've come to know Sally - first through Twitter, then personally - and I have a high regard for her ability to tell it how it is, to support others and to write so engagingly. Anxious because I loved her first book , No Matter What, so much. When she told me that her second book was a guide to parenting adopted children I must admit to thinking that this had been done before by so many others and that it wouldn't come close to the power of her first book. I needn't have worried. The Unofficial Guide to Parenting Adopted Children is brilliant; it's Sally at her best and a must-read for all those involved in adopting children from care. Sally takes us through the reality of modern day adoptive parenting in a frank, hard hitting and ultimately uplifting way. She pulls no punches, but what is so good about this book is the hope that it offers. Sally takes us in to her world, and provides the reader in a very matter-of-fact way sound advice from her own experience and research into therapeutic parenting. Any adopter reading this will know that they are not alone, that they can forgive themselves for not being the perfect "elite" parent, and that with love, knowledge, support and determination very damaged young lives can be transformed. Some may worry that this 'warts and all' description of 21st Century adoption will put others off from adopting. I don't. Because Sally shows us that it is so worthwhile; it's probably the most impactful and all-consuming voluntary effort than anyone ever makes in our society. The risk to successful adoptions is the lack of support for adoptive families, not supportive books like this. -- Hugh Thornbery, Chief Executive, Adoption UKSally Donovan gives us a book that is honest, real and down-to-earth. The satisfaction and the pain of parenting traumatized children is here along with many practical suggestions for therapeutic parenting. Writing from the perspective of an adoptive parent of two children this book has the compassion and reassurance that can only come from having been there. Thank you Sally for helping us to understand what it is like; for showing us that therapeutic parenting can work even though the journey is a long one and for the wisdom that says give it a go and if you don't always follow the model that is okay too. -- Dr. Kim S. Golding, Clinical PsychologistEven at this early stage in my own adoption journey...reading this book was a great way of re-reminding myself of some of the things I should be either doing or considering doing. This is a warts and all book, and probably funnier for it (and it is often funny). Probably the best recommendation I can give this book is to say that I will be keeping it close by so that I can get to it when I need it. Not only that but I will also be picking up a couple of extra copies for my family members too, to help with their understanding of the reality of our wonderful situation. -- Scott Vine, www.informationoverlord.co.ukIf we had had this book to refer to many years ago it would have helped us to parent our children more easily. It is not a text book and it is not prescriptive. It is a practical guide, easy to read, full of helpful advice and strategies to try for children where traditional parenting methods fail because our children have not had a traditional childhood experience. It is a must read for all adoptive parents. Read from it, get ideas from it, but above all smile at it and use it to help you smile again with your family. -- From the foreword by Sue and Jim Clifford OBEAward-winning columnist and adoptive parent Sally Donovan offers savvy, compassionate advice on how to be "good enough" in the face of both day-to-day and more bewildering challenges - how to respond to "red mist" meltdowns, crippling anxieties and most importantly, how to meet the intimidating challenge of being strong enough to protect and nurture your child. Book SynopsisAlready the mother of five children, Lana Grant's late diagnosis of autism at age 38 transformed her experience of her sixth pregnancy. Based on her own experiences of the challenges and joys of pregnancy and motherhood, this witty, entertaining read provides insight into the unique challenges encountered by mothers on the spectrum and provides tips and strategies for understanding and overcoming them. From physical and emotional changes, through to changes of routine and a lack of sleep, Lana Grant explains what women on the spectrum should expect in pregnancy and motherhood, as well as preparing them for the inevitable unexpected! Her stories of learning to make allowances for her feelings and her witty anecdotes offer support and a like-minded voice to women on the spectrum. She discusses everything from learning to understand the language used by medical professionals, who to tell what and when, and the dangers of over-sharing, through to sensory challenges during and after delivery, what to expect from staff in the hospital, and the social challenges of interacting with other mums before and after the birth. The first book on this important topic of pregnancy and motherhood on the autism spectrum, From Here to Maternity provides much needed support, insight and understanding for women on the spectrum, their family and friends, and the professionals working with them during and after pregnancy.Trade ReviewAs a mother diagnosed with autism after the birth of my children myself, I can relate to the anxieties and experiences that Lana has presented in this ground-breaking book on pregnancy and motherhood for women with autism. By sharing her personal journey, along with clear information and tips for medical staff, hopefully this book will help allay some of the fears and answer the many questions that expectant mothers on the autism spectrum will have. -- Sarah Hendrickx, author of several books, including Love, Sex and Long-Term Relationships: What People with Asperger Syndrome Really Really WantIn this extremely readable and engaging book, Lana Grant gives graphic details of her pregnancies to illustrate how the challenges are magnified for those with Asperger Syndrome. Even when medical staff knew her diagnosis, this rarely altered their practice. Feeling extremely anxious about much of what was said and done was constant. However, giving birth and caring for her children have been the happiest and most significant parts of her life to date. This is a must read for all medical staff and others in the field of autism. -- Dr. Glenys Jones, Chartered Psychologist, Autism Centre for Education and Research, University of BirminghamHappily ignoring the too common notion that women with an ASD cannot or should not have children, Lana Grant gives us From Here to Maternity, the baby book bible for those of us on the spectrum. Her language use can be taken literally, her explanations are visual enough to contemplate, and the extra tidbits of information not typically contained in everyday pregnancy books make this book a welcome addition to our female autism community and to any other woman who struggles with literalness, sensory integration, inflexibility, and/or perseverations. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisChallenging existing approaches to autism that limit, and sometimes damage, the individuals who attract and receive the label, this book questions the lazy prejudices and assumptions that can surround autism as a diagnosis in the 21st Century.Arguing that autism can only be understood through examining 'it' as a socially or culturally produced phenomenon, the authors offer a critique of the medical model that has produced a perpetually marginalising approach to autism, and explain the contradictions and difficulties inherent in existing attitudes. They examine and dispute the scientific validity of diagnosis and 'treatment', asking whether autism actually exists at the biological level, and question the value of diagnosis in the lives of those labelled with autism. The book recognises that there are no easy answers but encourages engagement with these essential questions, and looks towards service provision and practice that moves beyond a reliance on all-encompassing labels. This unique contribution to the growing field of critical autism studies brings together authors from clinical psychiatry, clinical and community psychology, social sciences, disability studies, education and cultural studies, as well as those with personal experiences of autism. It is essential and challenging reading for anyone with a personal, professional or academic interest in 'autism'.Trade ReviewImpressive! This book inaugurates both Critical Autism Studies and a crucial unsettling of all previous accounts of the meaning of autism. In chapters that unpack the label, its diagnosis and use, autism treatments, politics, identities, Re-Thinking Autism vibrantly demonstrates that it is time to begin our lives with autism as an integral part of human life rather than treating it as an unnatural condition. This book is an antidote to the normative violence that regularly surrounds lives lived with the label of autism, inviting all people to affirm a more complex version of humanity. -- Tanya Titchkosky, Professor, OISE, University of Toronto and author of 'The Question of Access', 'Reading and Writing Disability Differently' and 'Disability, Self and Society'The authors and editors of Re-Thinking Autism wear their radical hearts on their sleeves. They promise to thoroughly deconstruct the conventional wisdom about this new "epidemic" in our midst, and, by the book's end, to have prompted readers to think anew about what could be done to help those who struggle in ways that lead to this diagnosis. Their writing is clear, their manner authoritative, and they succeed admirably in achieving their goal. -- Robert Whitaker, author of 'Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America'This three part volume has something for everyone - parents of children with autism, practitioners... researchers and academics... [The] assemblage of disciplinary perspectives and geographic locations provides important insights into the scope and depth of how researchers are thinking about autism through a critical lens... this volume brings much needed attention to alternative ways of knowing autism and critiques of the social construction of autism in relation to what it means to be 'normal' and 'human'. -- Jennifer S. Book SynopsisKate Swaffer was just 49 years old when she was diagnosed with a form of younger onset dementia. In this book, she offers an all-too-rare first-hand insight into that experience, sounding a clarion call for change in how we ensure a better quality of life for people with dementia. Kate describes vividly her experiences of living with dementia, exploring the effects of memory difficulties, loss of independence, leaving long-term employment, the impact on her teenage sons, and the enormous impact of the dementia diagnosis on her sense of self. Never shying away from difficult issues, she tackles head-on stigma, inadequacies in care and support, and the media's role in perpetuating myths about dementia, suggesting ways in which we can include and empower people with the diagnosis. She also reflects on the ways in which her writing and dementia advocacy work have taken her on a process of self-discovery and enabled her to develop a new and meaningful personal identity. Kate's powerful words will challenge misconceptions about dementia, and open our eyes to new ways of supporting people with the diagnosis. A must read for people with dementia and their families as well as for professionals and carers.Trade ReviewBefore being diagnosed with younger onset dementia, Kate Swaffer loved to study, to learn, to be of service to others. Now living with dementia, she has not changed in these respects whatsoever. Her wonderfully illuminating book should be required reading for people and families living with dementia. -- Steven R. Sabat, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Georgetown University, Washington D.C., U.S.A.The scope of Kate's book is beyond that which anyone else with dementia has attempted. She reflects upon loneliness, guilt, driving, aged care, writing and advocacy. -- John Killick * Australian Journal of Dementia Care *Janet Baylis, Manager of our Dementia Knowledge Centre, says, 'There are few books written by people with dementia. He adds, 'The structure of short, crisp chapters works extremely well and gives the author the opportunity to structure her thinking and experience in a clear way.' -- Keith Oliver * Alzheimer Society Book Group *Laura Venables, who works on the Society's Engagement and Participation programme, was fascinated by Kate's account of 'prescribed disengagement'. This is how Kate describes the advice she says she was given - but ignored - to withdraw from her life and work after she was diagnosed. Laura says, 'Kate challenges the assumptions that are continuously brought out to define living with dementia. 'She openly illustrates her experiences of striving to continue life as she lived it the day before she was diagnosed, and of all the opportunities that she has become involved with since diagnosis - it's exciting stuff!' -- Laura Venables * Alzheimer Society Book Group *Table of ContentsDisclaimer. Book SynopsisJane Alison Sherwin's honest and uplifting account provides insight into the challenges of bringing up a child with Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). After years of misdiagnosis, Jane's daughter, Mollie, was diagnosed with PDA at the age of seven, and we follow her experiences pre and post diagnosis to age 10 as she attends school, interacts with the outside world and approaches adolescence. Throughout, Jane provides commentary on her daughter's behaviour and the impact it has on her family, explaining the 'why' of PDA traits, including the need for control, meltdowns, obsessive behaviour and sensory issues. She reveals the strategies that have worked for Mollie and provides essential advice and information on obtaining a diagnosis and raising awareness of PDA. The book also includes an interview with Mollie. Full of advice and support, and with a focus on understanding the child and how he or she sees the world, this book will be of immeasurable value to the parents and families of children with PDA as well as the professionals working with them, particularly teachers and teaching assistants, SEN co-ordinators, psychologists, outreach workers and social workers.Trade ReviewKnowledge and understanding of PDA is still at an early stage, but there are exciting developments happening in diagnostic understanding, greater awareness of successful educational approaches and the perspective that is now being gained from further research...Jane Sherwin's book, the account of the mother of Mollie, a ten-year-old girl with PDA, will add to that knowledge by highlighting the perspective of a parent, as well as giving fascinating glimpses into how the world seems from Mollie's point of view. -- from the foreword and introduction by Phil Christie, Consultant Child Psychologist, The Elizabeth Newson Centre, UKMy Daughter is Not Naughty charts the up and down journey of Jane and her daughter Mollie as they discover, and then begin learning to live with, Pathological Demand Avoidance syndrome. It is a down-to-earth read that tackles difficult issues with refreshing honesty, but is delivered with the warmth and sensitivity of a mother's touch. (The author) outlines the strategies that she has developed to cope with Mollie's meltdowns and anxieties and her 'huge issues' with sleep... • Understanding and Treating Self-Injurious

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Understanding and Treating Self-Injurious

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSelf-injurious behavior occurs in almost half of those with autism and is one of the most devastating and challenging-to-treat behaviors. There are many different forms of self-injury, such as head banging, hand biting, hair pulling, excessive scratching, and much more. With contributions from the leading experts in research and treatment, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of self-injurious behavior (SIB) in people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or related developmental disabilities, and the different methods available to treat them. Medical and behavioral researchers have studied SIB for over 50 years, but many practitioners and parents are still unfamiliar with the wide range of contributing causes and treatment options. Beginning with an explanation of SIB and its various forms, the contributors outline the many possible underlying causes of self-injury, such as seizures, hormonal imbalance in teenagers, gastrointestinal conditions, allergies, and stress, and show how a multi-disciplinary approach when uncovering the causes of self-injury can lead to successful treatment strategies. They explain the treatment options available for SIB, including nutritional, medical, psychiatric, sensory, and behavioral approaches, and show how an integrative approach to treating self-injury may be effective for many individuals. The book will be an invaluable addition to the bookshelves of any practitioner working with people with an ASD or related condition, as well as parents and direct care providers.Trade ReviewAn essential resource for parents, teachers, and health care providers who work with individuals with self-injurious behavior. -- Temple Grandin, author of Thinking in Pictures and The Autistic BrainThe root of self-injurious behaviour can be different for each person on the autism spectrum. An individualized approach, considering all options and combinations of treatments, provides the best chance for a healthy and happy life. This book is long overdue. -- Laurie Mawlam, Executive Director, Autism CanadaThis is a "must read" book for all practitioners who interact with families affected by autism. Many of the authors whom Dr. Edelson has brought together in this impressive volume have dedicated much of their adult lives to the treatment of people with autism, and they know just how devastating and difficult to treat self-injurious behavior can be. While it is important to study the causes of ASD, it is equally important to identify and treat co-occurring conditions that jeopardize the longevity and quality of life of affected individuals. This is an important step in bringing awareness to the larger community about self-injurious behavior as a critical issue in ASD. -- David G. Amaral, Ph.D., Research Director, The MIND InstituteSelf-injurious behaviors, a not-uncommon family of conditions in autism, vary in severity and are sometimes very damaging to the body. Typically, they are difficult to treat. Understanding and Treating Self-Injurious Behavior in Autism, edited by Dr. Stephen M. Edelson and Jane Botsford Johnson, is an important effort to advance knowledge regarding these poorly understood and challenging behaviors that receive inadequate scholarly attention. In this volume, Edelson and Johnson insightfully bring together experts from diverse clinical and research backgrounds who discuss general medical, neurological, genetic, and pharmacological issues that can contribute to causation of self-injurious behaviors, as well as different therapeutic approaches that may be useful in specific clinical contexts. This work communicates current knowledge regarding self-injurious behaviors and advances our understanding in this important area of medicine. Understanding and Treating Self-Injurious Behavior in Autism is highly recommended for clinicians who care for persons with such behaviors and for researchers interested in learning diverse perspectives on the field. -- Marvin Natowicz, MD, PhD, Clinical Geneticist, Clinical Pathologist Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Institute, Cleveland Clinic Cleveland, OHThis immensely valuable book guides us through multiple potential target etiologies of self-injurious behavior for effective treatment. Thoughtfully assembled and edited, it represents a much-needed practical and integrative handbook of use to every practitioner who works with individuals with autism spectrum and related disorders. Book SynopsisFor people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the stresses of coping with a world that often seems alien to them can frequently lead to depression. Written specifically for adults with ASD, this ground-breaking book offers accessible and sensitive advice on how to manage depression and make positive steps towards recovery.Nick Dubin shares his own experiences of depression including how he has dealt with it, and everything from initial feelings of anger and frustration to medication, cognitive behavioural therapy and overcoming 'the dark night of the soul'. With a chapter on suicide and interviews with his parents, the book provides real, practical solutions to a problem that is often overlooked.Trade ReviewThe Autism Spectrum and Depression will be my primary reference book for explanations and ideas to alleviate depression for clients in my clinical practice. Book SynopsisThis concise and highly accessible book contains everything that parents and busy professionals need to know about ADHD.The author describes the spectrum of ADHD, the co-occurring symptoms, and common difficulties that parents face. The rest of the book focuses on solutions, based around four rules. Rule number one is keeping it positive: punishments can change behavior, but only positive approaches can improve attitude. Rule number two is keeping it calm: it's difficult thinking clearly enough to solve problems logically if you are feeling overwhelmed. Rule number three is keeping it organized: this rule relates particularly to the child's school life. Rule number four is to keep doing rules one to three. Finally, Dr. Kutscher discusses the role of medication for treating ADHD. The concluding chapter summarizes the information covered and can also be read as a complete, freestanding text. Useful checklists and further reading recommendations are also included.Realistic and optimistic, this book is the ideal source of information and advice for parents and professionals who are trying to keep up with children who are living without brakes.Trade ReviewHis positive solutions for parents are based around four rules: keep it positive; keep it calm; keep it organised; and the fourth is keep going with rules 1 to 3. -- CerebraThoroughly recommended for parents, families and those who work with children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). -- Youth in MindThis enlightening book captures the complexity of living in a world that is not designed for children with ADHD... Read this one from cover to cover for a concise, yet thorough, review of what living without brakes really means for ADHD kids. -- AdditudeA concise and highly accessible book containing information about ADHD for parents and professionals. -- Current Awareness ServiceParenting a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is demanding, and there are many misconceptions about the diagnosis. But there is help as we learn more about the different facets of ADHD. For clarity, advice, and a healthy dose of optimism, we turned to Martin Kutscher, M.D., a pediatric neurologist and the author of the book ADHD: Living Without Brakes. His best advice: Stay positive. -- Scholastic Parent & ChildMartin Kutscher is a paediatric neurologist and understands the nature of ADHD as well as the perspectives and experiences of parents, teachers and children. He explains ADHD in a clear and engaging style that will ensure that his book will be read, appreciated and the practical strategies implemented at home and at school. I strongly recommend Living Without Brakes as the book of first choice for parents of a child with ADHD. -- Tony Attwood, author of The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome and Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and ProfessionalsDr. Kutscher has brilliantly accomplished exactly what he has set out to do. This book is wonderfully concise yet all-inclusive while remaining an easy read for parents and educators alike. The parenting and educational strategies are a great combination of proven methods that are realistic and practical to implement. Most of all, this book will help parents and anyone else who works with these children thoroughly understand how they think and why they function the way they do. -- Heidi Bernhardt, National Director of the Centre for ADHD/ADD Advocacy CanadaEven if parents, teachers, and therapists read no further than the table of contents, they will gain a hugely valuable set of guidelines for helping children with ADHD. Of course, they'd best continue reading, because Dr. Kutscher fleshes out each guideline in the realistic-but-optimistic style his readers have come to expect I cannot imagine a more clear, concise, and empathetic guide. Reading this book is like sitting down for a leisurely chat with an extremely compassionate, informed, and down-to-earth physician. -- Gina Pera, author of Is It You, Me, or Adult ADD?Living with a child who can't control movements or thoughts or emotions can leave parents feeling pretty out of control, too. We may feel that negotiating with kids weakens us, and that profiving a safety net weakens them, but without those thuings days can devolve into cyles of fighting and failure.Maybe the most important thing about ADHD:Living without Brakes is that is gives parents permission to give kids with ADHD - the sort of support and stress releif they need to function successfully. These children require a departure from the standard techniques of firm discipline and learning from mistakes, and if you've been fighting that bad fight without success, it's a releif to know there are other approaches. Many of the ones included in this zippy little book come froo other longer and less zippy works, making it a great introduction to a lot of text you will want to examine in more detail. This is sort of the attention-deficit version of an ADHD help bppk, highlightes by cartoon illustrations and "quizzes" that summarize the chapter in a way that makes it very clear with answers are right and wrong. And if the first 130 pages are still too much for you to wade through? The last thirtyfive summarize the whole book in an even briefer package. That little bit may be perfect for passing on to teachers or family members who are really never going to read those books you recommend. Particularly if they have a negative view of your child's behaviour or your way of handling it, the positive attitude and simplified explanations here may turn their attention to a more productive path. -- About.comTable of ContentsIntroduction. 1. Book Synopsis*Gold Medal Winner in the Sexuality / Relationships Category of the 2011 IPPY Awards** Honorary Mention in the 2010 BOTYA Awards Women's Issues Category *Girls with Asperger's Syndrome are less frequently diagnosed than boys, and even once symptoms have been recognised, help is often not readily available. The image of coping well presented by AS females of any age can often mask difficulties, deficits, challenges, and loneliness. This is a must-have handbook written by an Aspergirl for Aspergirls, young and old. Rudy Simone guides you through every aspect of both personal and professional life, from early recollections of blame, guilt, and savant skills, to friendships, romance and marriage. Employment, career, rituals and routines are also covered, along with depression, meltdowns and being misunderstood. Including the reflections of over thirty-five women diagnosed as on the spectrum, as well as some partners and parents, Rudy identifies recurring struggles and areas where Aspergirls need validation, information and advice. As they recount their stories, anecdotes, and wisdom, she highlights how differences between males and females on the spectrum are mostly a matter of perception, rejecting negative views of Aspergirls and empowering them to lead happy and fulfilled lives. This book will be essential reading for females of any age diagnosed with AS, and those who think they might be on the spectrum. It will also be of interest to partners and loved ones of Aspergirls, and anybody interested either professionally or academically in Asperger's Syndrome.Trade ReviewRuby Simone's approach is hands-on, and her writing style is easy to read. The chapters are short and give good tips to woman and girls with AS and the people closest to them. I don't know that I believe all the holistic stuff, but I think this book should be required reading for woman and girls who have been diagnosed with AS. -- A Girl Walks into a Bookstore BlogEvery chapter deals with the everyday things that occur in life, explaining how you could feel when you're in love, when you fancy someone, to what you do and should do when going on a date. Sexual relationships and sexual activity are clearly explained, as are how they are affected by sensory issues and whether sex is painful and annoying -- Asperger UnitedIt is interesting the way temper meltdowns are described very accurately and are written just as I experience them, including crying, frustration, shouting, yelling, being sarcastic, becoming vicious, feeling faint or dizzy and that temper meltdowns often happen when we are hungry. -- Asperger UnitedThis is a very readable and enlightening book for all Aspergrirls, their family, friends and involved others... This thoughtful account enthuses the reader and builds their understanding of the specific needs of Aspergirls; a highly recommended book. -- Youth in MindIn the accessible and relevant 'Aspergirls', Rudy Simone takes the reader through the stages of life from childhood to old age, looking at issues such as the Aspergirl's 'meltdowns', 'stims' (self-stimulatory behaviour), literal thinking, socialising and sexuality. It is written in a touching, often humorous and very practical style, effectively providing a life manual for females with Asperger Syndrome. The anecdotes from Aspergirls she has interviewed broaden the reader's insight into what is must be like to live with this syndrome. -- Speech & Language Therapy in PracticeIn a lovely style, Rudy Simone covers every aspect of personal and professional life, from early recollections of blame, guilt and savant skills to friendships, romance and marriage...Rudy identifies recurring struggles and areas where Aspergirls need validation, information and advice. As they recount their stories, anecdotes and wisdom, she highlights how differences between males and females on the spectrum are mostly a matter of perception and empowers Aspergirls to lead happy and fulfilled lives. -- Human Givens JournalI can highly recommend this book to all Aspergirls and their parents, family, partners and professionals, as well as to all members of our community. With humour, love, liking and respect Rudy opens our eyes to the World of the Aspergirl, providing powerful insights on love, learning, sex, career, marriage, having children, friendships, puberty, diagnosis, emotions, health, aging and more...For too many years we have missed Aspergirls due to our current understanding of Asperger's syndrome being largely based on a male presentation. Rudy generously provides, through deep personal insight and her interviews with other Aspergirls, a broader definition and understanding, one that will help bridge the gap between Aspergirls and the non-spectrum population. -- Dr Michelle Garnett MPsych(Clin) PhD MAPS MCCP, Clinic Director and Clinical Psychologist, Minds & Hearts: A Specialist Clinic for Asperger's Syndrome and AutismRudy's book helps girls with AS to realize that they are not alone and lets them know that there are others who feel like thy do. But Rudy also does a thoughtful job of illustrating that not all girls with AS are the same. They have both talents and deficits and vary based on intelligence, level of imagination, and obsessions, just to name a few areas. -- Help! SOS for ParentsMany people, doctors and counsellors included, see AS (Autism Spectrum) as predominately affecting men. The Aspergirls is more often than not overlooked or diagnosed later in life. Rudy's book helps girls with AS to realize that they are not alone and lets them know that there are others who feel like they do. But Rudy also does a thoughtful job of illustrating that not all girls with AS are the same. They have both talents and deficits and vary based on intelligence, level of imagination, and obsessions, just to name a few areas.' - Help! S-O-S for Parents'Specialists' books are all very well, but what people really, really need are the 'case histories' told from the inside. And so far this is the best I've seen. Aspergirls is a mix between Rudy's own experience and that of other Aspergirls, as well as pure advice, both to other Aspies as well as to Neurotypicals. -- Bookwich blogThis book is a tremendous resource for Aspergirls, their parents, family, friends and professionals. Based on Ms. Simone's personal insight as well as her interviews of over 35 women on the spectrum, this book will serve as an inclusive reference manual. Each chapter is packed with information on sensory overload, guilt, dating, higher learning and career, medication, meltdowns and stomach issues to name only a few. At the end of each chapter are sections containing very practical suggestions for Aspergirls, and their parents for handling the multitude of issues that can accompany Asperger's syndrome. She also encourages Aspergirls to celebrate and cherish who they are and puts to rest some common myths about girls on the spectrum. She encourages us with statements such as, "Life is about making a contribution, not about being popular and fitting in." Ms. Simone is very candid and open about her own struggles and with bullying experiences. She also discusses the difficulties in identifying women on the spectrum. This book will serve as an excellent reference for the Aspergirl and those who love/work with her. -- Bonnie Kimpling-Kelly, teacher and behavior analystThis book is an easy to read, sensitive and funny at times while presenting some serious matters to consider. The concerns are focused on the individual but inclusive of the parents, educator and the community surrounding them. Whether you are a parent of a child with Asperger Syndrome or know someone who is, this is a must read as it will not only provide the reader with a good insight and look into the lives of girls with Asperger Syndrome, but also make you laugh as you develop more compassion aside faith. -- Oren Shtayermman * Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders *Table of ContentsForeword by Liane Holliday Willey. Some of the accounts are almost too scary to contemplate, yet her constant optimism has brought her through. Her deep introspection brings us all closer to understanding how an autistic mind experiences the world. She provides end of chapter support sections giving her ideas of things that she feels would be helpful to know. It is clear she hopes others may not have to face similar situations or ordeals unprepared. Liane longs for a world where AS is totally accepted, it is writ large on every page, it would address the extreme stresses many have to live with on a daily basis. Liane's book could help vulnerable women with AS live a safer, happier life. -- Rosalyn Lord, parent, advocate and trainer, UKIn the chapter titled Out and About or Traveling To and Fro, Liane Holliday Willey describes several challenging travel adventures - across the continent and around the block - in vivid Aspie detail. The wording of an informational sign at an airport, confusing pronunciations of her name over an airport loudspeaker, the resultant stressful interaction with an airlines representative, rearranged shelves in grocery stores that set off in a bad way the routine-bound author, all illustrate sensory and social situations that could make travel daunting, difficult and something to avoid for many living in the spectrum. Yet, Liane understands that the basic human desire to explore the world and the benefits of doing so, however difficult it may be, outweighs the dilemmas. This chapter alone makes Safety Skills for Asperger Women a must-read! -- Dennis Debbaudt, founder of Autism Risk & Safety Management and author of Autism, Advocates and Law Enforcement Professionals[Liane's] personal explanations and advice will resonate with the reader and transform and even save lives. Book SynopsisAnxiety is the root cause of many of the difficulties experienced by people on the autism spectrum, and is often caused by things such as a change in routine, or sensory overload. Deborah Lipsky takes a practical look at what happens when things spiral out of control, exploring what leads to meltdowns and tantrums, and what can be done to help. Drawing on her own extensive personal experience and using real-life examples to explain how autistic people think, the author distinguishes between meltdowns and tantrums, showing how they are different, how each can begin, and most importantly, how to identify triggers and prevent outbursts from happening in the first place. Practical and simple solutions to avoiding anxiety are offered throughout, and these are accompanied by calming techniques and suggestions for dealing with tantrums when they occur. This book will be an essential read for those on the autism spectrum, their families and friends, professionals working with them, and anybody else with an interest in autism spectrum conditions.Trade ReviewA highly engaging texts, with illustrations drawn from personal experience, From Anxiety to Meltdown provides valuable insights into daily challenges faced by individuals with autism spectrum and highlights how aspects of the environment both with regard to sensory issues and cognitive demands can increase anxiety and lead to meltdown... I would recommend this text to parents, teachers, and professionals who care for and support childrn and young people with autism. -- DebateThis excellent book explains how anxiety causes meltdowns in autism... The book is well written and informative; much of the information is a reminder of how reactions to the environment can be so differnt etween individuals with autism and neurotypicals. -- AukidsThis book acts as a guide for people who want to gain a better understanding about how individuals on the autistic spectrum deal with anxiety, meltdowns and manifest tantrums... The author offers some good ideas and guides on how to avoid and reduce anxiety in certain situations... Deborah Lipsky certainly guides the reader through how anxiety can affect people with autism and how to deal with this in a very personal, approachable manner. -- Youth in MindPeople with autism are very good at worrying, and we now have neurological studies suggesting that high levels of anxiety are indeed a constitutional aspect of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Deborah Lipsky's book provides a wealth of insight, explanations and practical strategies based on her personal experiences. As a clinician, I endorse her analysis of the causes of anxiety and meltdowns, and know she will receive the gratitude of parents, teachers, psychologists and people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder for her recommendations and interventions. This book could be more effective than medication, and is less expensive than a consultation with a clinical psychologist. -- Tony Attwood, Clinical Psychologist and author of The Complete Guide to Asperger's SyndromeI very much relate to and appreciate Deborah Lipsky's book so much I think the title should read 'From Anxiety to Meltdown to Living Lovely'. From now on when people ask me to explain why I have meltdowns and how they can help me recover I think I will just hand them a copy of this book. -- Liane Holliday Willey, EdD author of Safety Skills for Asperger Women: How to Save a Perfectly Good Female LifeDeborah Lipsky provides her inside view on anxiety and meltdowns in autism. She explains how she controls her anxiety. -- Temple Grandin, author of Thinking in Pictures and The Way I See ItWritten by a person with high functioning autism this book provides first hand experiences of what it is like to be autistic. That alone would make this book a must read but this book is so much more... The book is easy reading and the author provides interesting anecdotes to explain points which keeps the readers interest... on finishing it the reader really feels like they have a clear understanding of the triggers of meltdowns and strategies to support the individual. I feel that this is a useful book for anyone working or caring for children or young people with autism. -- NAPLIC MattersDeborah Lipsky's analogy of a person with autism being rather like a tiger was thought provoking and quite understandable. The book is easy to read and uses easy to understand language making it accessible to the majority. It gives an excellent insight into the mind of someone with autism and how the condition can affect them. The information about how to calm a person with autism was particularly interesting from a non autistic point of view and how the use of scripts can help lower the anxieties of people with Autism. The use of the examples in the book also give a better understanding of how situations are interpreted differently between autistic and non autistic people.A good book for anyone working with people on the Autistic Spectrum. -- OAASISDeborah Lipsky, the self dubbed Raccoon Lady, has written a must read for people like me... So here, Deborah provides great insight into the thought processes and thinking patterns applicable to many people on the spectrum,. Her perspective may not be unique, in that there are lots of other autistic people with similar viewpoints, but trouble is that not enough of them have written a book about it to enlighten us. So here is the opportunity... Her insights, tips and approach should prove invaluable to many, but for me, I was particularly interested to read about the interplay between anxiety, OCD, stress and how these elements can affect someone in their adult life. Her account provides ample evidence about mechanisms as possible, as well as the need to teach and practice flexible thinking. I was delighted to read about Deborah's challenging and fulfilling life, which I'm sure will prove inspirational to both parents and autistic children. It would be far too sweeping to say, "Nothing holds you back except the limits imposed by yourself", but the impulse to self-censure is a commonplace part of the human condition. -- Whitterer on AutismI actually enjoyed reading this book and found it very readable. I particularly appreciated the personal anecdotes and her forthright opinions....She is very careful to clearly explain and then illustrate everything with examples and thereby ensures that the reader fully understands what causes meltdowns and how they feel....She gives many suggestions about how to spot when a meltdown is imminent and to prevent it before its too late. There is also a mine of information about how to adapt a person's life so that they are not overwhelmed, without having to totally withdraw from life and how to prepare for unwanted but inevitable changes to plans....I totally agree with her focus and feel that she has struck the perfect balance between helping the child/adult learn strategies to manage and control their anxiety and also those around them putting in an equal amount of effort to accommodate the person on the spectrum....On a personal level I could relate to much of what she says and I suspect that many parents with children on the spectrum will find it not only instructive in helping their child, but also for themselves....If you are struggling with a child who is constantly being aggressive and having meltdowns this book goes a long way to explaining why and what you can do about it....For parents who are beginning to feel that their child is just bad, or where schools feel that the child is just badly disciplined then this book will help to change their false cognitions....This is a must read for parents, learning support assistants, social workers, teachers and psychologists and will give them much needed insight and empathy." -- AS TeensDrawing on her extensive personal experience as a high-functioning autistic individual and using real-life examples to explain how autistic people think, the author highlight how meltdowns and tantrums differ from each other and discusses the sources they can stem from... Practical and simple solutions for avoiding anxiety are offered throughout, accompanied by calming techniques and suggestions for ways to deal with tantrums, when they occur. -- Human GivensTable of ContentsIntroduction. 1. Book SynopsisTeenagers and older children on the autism spectrum are, like everyone else, surrounded by complex social codes and rules that govern everyday interaction, but have much more difficulty in interpreting them. Reading cues such as sarcasm, idioms and body language often presents an impossible challenge, but this book of realistic and thought-provoking stories provides much needed help.Written with both parent and teen in mind, every story outlines a real-life situation that young people on the autism spectrum are likely to encounter. Each story is followed by questions such as 'what else might he have done?', 'how do you think she felt?' and 'why do you think they were upset?' along with practical tips for parents on how to initiate constructive discussions. As teens consider these questions with adults, they will begin to be able to put themselves into someone else's shoes and think about how their actions and behaviour may affect those around them. This process will equip them to transfer this invaluable understanding and confidence to other everyday life situations. Packed with 60 stories exploring real-life situations, this book will be an essential tool for parents, caregivers, teachers, and anyone else wishing to enable young people on the autism spectrum to acquire great social skills.Trade ReviewThe book is designed with teens on the autism spectrum and their parents in mind but has application for all teenagers as well as education and professional staff working with any young person on their social development and social understanding. The aim of the book is to provide positive, helpful and thought-provoking social situations and discussion starters and it does this successfully. It is easy to read and provides good discussion starters and topics that will help improve understanding of social situations for a variety of teens. It has application for parents, schools and professional staff working with young people on their social understanding and specifically teens on the autism spectrum, although its potential application to a broader population is possible... short, concise, practical yet comprehensive teaching tool that is easy to red. -- Australian Journal Guidance and CounsellingLisa A Timms' new roadmap "60 Social Situations and Conversation Starters to Help Teens on the Autism Spectrum Deal with Friendships, Feelings, Conflict and More" is filled with stories of teens facing difficult social situations, such as the boy who had to miss his important basketball game because his mother's car wouldn't start or the boy who wanted to be homeschooled because he didn't get along with his teachers, only to be assigned his least favorite teacher for homeschooling!... This is a very concrete, easy to understand book for teens with ASD and because of all the case examples, this will help the reader to understand social concepts better, because of the concrete nature of the material and the format, which is designed for parents and teens to work on together. This is a rare gem. -- Autism Society of MichiganThe book is unusually easy to read and follow with no jargon or complex ideas to grapple with... I felt this book was one of the easiest to use and was intelligently designed can be applied in any order. In so many of the other books in this field one has to work through in linear fashion, which is automatically a barrier. Many teens are unwilling to give a lot of time to yet another activity in their already busy lives. In this book a specific problem can be dealt with in isolation which is a real asset... I would recommend this book as a starting point for any parent wanting to help their teen develop their understanding of social situations. It will help then identify areas of their behaviour and reactions that might be unhelpful and what is helpful -- AS TeensLisa Timms 60 Social Situations is a great resource for therapists, guidance counselors and parents alike. It helps break down a variety of socially-related scenarios that are often complicated and confusing for teenagers on the autism spectrum. The questions that accompany each topic are thought provoking and applicable to everyday life and generalize easily into the real world. It also provides parents with a stepping stone to generate very important discussions with their teens with experiences they may have already had or are likely to have. -- Deanne Chincola, Clinical Supervisor in Behavioral Health Rehabilitation ServicesFinally, a useful and relevant guide about appropriate & safe social interactions has emerged that can really help teens and young adults with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Lisa Timms has written a top-notch book that includes skills development scenarios for school, recreation, community, social networking, and employment. Information for parents to coach & facilitate skills is positive, helpful, and thought provoking. 60 Social Situations & Discussion Starters is easy to read, fun to discuss, and a great book to improve the understanding of social situations. -- Donna Podrazik, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist, Private PracticeThis book is an important tool for educators and therapists to help children with ASD learn to think "Inside the box". Rehearsing social situations is key to anxiety reduction and peer acceptance in teenagers who simply don't know what to do or say in a variety of common situations. This book is a "must have" for parents. Instead of the author simply teaching the child how to respond in a situation, this book uses discussion questions to help parents teach children their own preferred responses to situations. This helps the parents tailor the strategies to reflect each family's unique beliefs. -- Joann Pesavento, Behavioral Specialist Consultant specializing in children with Autism Spectrum DisordersThis is an invaluable tool to aid in the improvement of social skills. I have been waiting for something like this! It has the potential to diminish or limit the negative consequences i.e. anxiety, depression and loss of self esteem, that often accompany a poor social skill set. I highly recommend it to parents of ASD and typical teens. In our home we would pick a topic and discuss it at the dinner table. I know it will give parents a sense of piece of mind, that they might better prepare their teen for the unknown. -- Mary Walsh, parent. This book is aimed at helping young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) to develop a greater understanding of social situations. It is designed with both the young person and their parents in mind. It will also be useful for professionals who work with teens with ASD and want to focus on strengthening their social skills... Rudy Simone boldly goes where no author has gone before with insight and enterprise. This book will revive and rescue relationships. -- From the foreword by Tony Attwood, Clinical Psychologist and author of many books including The Complete Guide to Asperger's SyndromeIn her inimitably warm, witty, and disarming style, Rudy Simone casts light on what you need to know about having a relationship with a woman on the spectrum. Addressing everything from sex, to sensory issues, to emotional vulnerability, to giving and receiving criticism in a caring and safe way, Simone offers a helpful road map that will help you avoid potential pitfalls with the one you love and start building a life of closeness, passion, and honesty together. -- Steve Silberman, contributing editor of Wired magazine and neurodiversity blogger for the Public Library of ScienceI find this book extremely well written in a language that non autistic individuals can identify with and get the point of what Rudy Simone is trying to convey. -- Deborah Lipsky, author of From Anxiety to Meltdown and Managing Meltdowns, Maine, USASimone writes with humour and candour about control issues, moods, sensory challenges, repetitive behaviours, special interests and more... • Kids in the Syndrome Mix of ADHD, LD, Autism

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Kids in the Syndrome Mix of ADHD, LD, Autism

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe completely updated and expanded new edition of this well-established text incorporates DSM-5 changes as well as other new developments. The all-in-one guide covers the whole range of often co-existing neuro-behavioral disorders in children – from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety, to autism spectrum disorders, nonverbal learning disabilities, Tourette's, sensory integration problems, and executive dysfunction. A completely revised chapter on the autism spectrum by Tony Attwood explains not only new understanding in the field, but the new diagnostic criteria, and the anticipated usage of the term 'Asperger's Syndrome'. Dr. Kutscher provides accessible information on causes, symptoms, interactions with other conditions, and treatments. He presents effective behavioral strategies for responding to children who display traits of these disorders – whether at home, at school, or in other settings – along with case vignettes and practical tips. Finally, a chapter on the role of medications summarizes current knowledge. The author's sympathetic yet upbeat approach and skillful explanations of the inner world of children in the syndrome mix make this an invaluable companion for parents, teachers, professionals, and anyone else who needs fast and to-the-point advice on children with special needs.Trade ReviewThis is the first book anyone attempting to understand a child with these disorders should read. Dr. Kutscher takes complex medical information and transforms it into a reader friendly format for the non-professional. He has taken so much great information by so many renowned professionals in the field and combined it with his own understanding and empathy in a truly unique book. His examples are so true to life it brought back many memories. I only wish I had his list of tips and strategies 30 years ago when we started our journey with ADHD. I will be recommending this book to parents, educators and anyone else wishing to help these children lead happy and successful lives. -- Heidi Bernhardt, mother of three grown sons with ADHD and Founder, President and Executive Director of CADDAC (Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada)Kids in the Syndrome Mix offers parents and teachers much needed hope and guidance as they navigate the often overwhelming world of supporting kids with co-existing conditions. Dr. Kutscher offers a wealth of information from diagnostic criteria and treatment options to concrete behavioral strategies and practical tips for home and school. This powerful guide will certainly help sensory children get organized, and support parents and teachers so they can better connect with their children in a calm and positive way. -- Carolyn Dalgliesh, Founder of Systems for Sensory Kids LLC, parent of a child with special needs, and author of The Sensory Child Gets Organized: Proven Systems for Rigid, Anxious, or Distracted KidsKids in the Syndrome Mix was an instant classic. It will now be a life raft for children's advocates trying to find their kids a fitting diagnosis that will secure services in accordance with the heavily revised DSM-5. That's great news, but the best news is this - Kutscher knows how to express the challenges of figuring out our wonderfully complex kids with neurobiological disorders, just as he knows how to calm our concerns and help us find realistic solutions to the myriad of issues that shadow our special children. This is a book for everyone interested in any area of child development. -- Liane Holliday Willey, EdD, author of Pretending to be Normal, Safety Skills for Asperger Women, Asperger Syndrome in Adolescence, and Asperger Syndrome in the FamilyIt's difficult enough to write a book for professionals, parents or teachers providing them the information and insights germane to the subject investigated. To write a book for all three audiences in a language that reaches each audience without talking up or down to any is an art in itself. Marty Kutscher not only accomplishes this task extraordinarily well, but he covers a myriad of complex topics with such skill and economy relating in a few pages what would take another author a complete text to cover. The information, insights and pragmatic offerings in this book truly make it essential reading for anyone, parent, teacher or professional. -- Dr Paul D. Schwartz, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Adolescent Research and Development, Mt St Mary College, NY, USAThis all-in-one guide covers the whole range of often co-existing neuro-behavioural disorders in children...Dr Kutscher provides accessible information on causes, symptoms, interactions with other conditions, and treatments... invaluable companion for parents, teachers, professionals, and anyone else who needs fast and to-the-point advice on children with special needs. -- Fragile X Association of Australiait is an excellent book for both trainees and seasoned professionals... The author advises on how to help parents and professionals to accommodate the child's diagnosis... There is a good advice (...) on understanding the child's mindset, combined with suggestions for beginning to change their behaviour, attending to problem-solving skills and dealing with angry and frustrated children... All trainings for counselling and psychotherapy with children should include this book on their book list. -- Joanna North, psychotherapist * BACP Children & Young People *In this updated edition, Kutscher (pediatrics, neurology, New York Medical Coll.; Organizing the Disorganized Child), with contributions from Tony Attwood (psychology, Griffith Univ., Queensland, Australia; Asperger's Syndrome) and Robert R. Wolff (pediatrics, neurology, New York Medical Coll.), has provided a thorough guide for parents, teachers, and professionals working with children affected by one or more neurobehaviorial disorders in the mix discussed. Incorporating DSM-5 changes and other new developments, Kutscher's first two chapters focus on general principles of diagnosis and treatment. The author concentrates on the role that parents, teachers, and professionals play, first in recognizing the signs and then in appropriately identifying and treating the syndromes, specifically by being aware of the occurrence of more than one syndrome presenting. While understanding the frustration that parents and teachers often feel when living and working with these children, Kutscher also creates an awareness and empathy for the difficulty children face when dealing with their own symptoms. Chapters about each of the specific syndromes, symptoms, causes, treatments, and how they may appear together follow. VERDICT Awareness of these syndromes and how they interact and affect one another is invaluable to parents, teachers, and physicians. This new edition is important for libraries with developmental disability sections and parenting collections. -- Library Journal, Starred ReviewThis is the 2nd edition of an 'all-in-one guide' to a wide range of often co-existing special educational needs and disabilities. Written in an easy and accessible style, the author presents information on causes, symptoms, interaction with other conditions and treatments... It is (...) a handy guide for the lay-person or busy parent. Book SynopsisIn Born Liars, Ian Leslie takes the reader on an exhilarating tour of ideas that brings the latest news about deception back from the frontiers of psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy, and explores the role played by lies - both black and white - in our childhoods, our careers, and our health, as well as in advertising, politics, sport and war. Drawing on thinkers as varied as Augustine, Charles Darwin, Sigmund Freud and Joni Mitchell, the author argues that, far from being a bug in the human software, lying is central to who we are; that we cannot understand ourselves without first understanding the dynamics of deceit. Book SynopsisBereavement is integral to the human condition. Despite living in a more open society than we've ever known, those who are bereaved today find that this apparent openness isn't translated into the genuine support they seek, leaving many to struggle with loss in isolation and loneliness. Even within families and close friendships, opportunities for bereaved people to be listened to, or to explore issues that are strange and confusing, are not as readily available as they hope or expect. Tom Gordon's extensive experience over many years of working with bereaved people, both individually and in support groups, gives him a deep understanding of and sensitivity to these issues, as well as providing him with a fund of stories about how people have coped with bereavement, and have overcome and adapted to the changes and challenges of the losses in their lives. In this book, Tom gives a voice to these people, allowing us to be drawn into the world they inhabit, sharing their joys and anxieties, and hearing them speak of learning and normality, painfulness and hope, failures and successes, devastation and adjustment. As ordinary people have found insight and support in the isolation of their losses, Tom believes that their whispers of wisdom are needed to help others who are bereaved know that they too can be understood and supported in their grief.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisHow should a motorist converse with the police? Should you switch off your headlights when another car approaches? What parts of the engine can you fix with a sheet of emery paper, insulating tape and copper wire? The 1920s heralded the age of motoring with the arrival of the ‘affordable’ Austin Seven and the increasing popularity of Morris Motors in Britain. Yet the first edition of the Highway Code would not appear for another decade and the rules of the road were rudimentary to say the least. This charming and practical guide provides enduring advice to novice motorists on how to cope with such hazards as skidding, headlight dazzle and sheep on the road, much of which is still instructive on today’s car journeys. Many of the author’s observations will strike a chord with the modern driver: ‘When driving, look on all other drivers as fools...’. Others evoke the style and etiquette of a glamorous bygone era: ‘A good chauffeur... will save his employer a great deal of expense’; ‘an average speed of twenty miles per hour... allows you and your passengers to see something of the countryside’. Covering such topics as unscrupulous second-hand car dealers, women drivers and ‘dashboard delights’, this little book provides all the information needed to get maximum enjoyment out of the open road, complete with leisurely picnics and a little light motor-car maintenance.

Book SynopsisWhat makes a perfect husband? In this tongue-in-cheek guide, illustrated by Heath Robinson’s inimitable cartoons and contraptions, there are many charmingly old-fashioned tips for how to succeed in almost all aspects of married life. First published in 1937, this delightful book gives an insight into how the roles of both wife and husband were viewed at the time and pokes gentle fun at them both. The perfect husband presses his own trousers; he can tend the lawn and entertain the baby simultaneously by means of two simple attachments to the garden roller; he can peel onions behind his back, with the help of a mirror, and thus avoid tears; he can make a vacuum cleaner and he even has a device to help him climb the stairs silently after a late night out with the boys. When offered the choice of a glass of milk or a Manhattan, he will choose the former. With chapters on courtship and proposal, the wedding, early married life, bringing up children, sports and hobbies, domestic difficulties and middle age, this book makes a highly amusing gift for those who are considering tying the knot or wish to celebrate wedded bliss.

For example, ‘Choose bedside books for their soporific qualities’, or, ‘one whisky-and-soda on retiring... makes the average man forget the dullest dinner and sends him to bed in a glow of good will.’ With sections on hot-water bottles, robes de nuit, breakfast in bed, the best kind of pillow, sneaking home late and night-time readers, this is the perfect, self-improving gift for your favourite bedfellow.Table of ContentsBediquette 1 In Bed with a Teacher of Manners 3 How to Go to Bed 7 Going to Bed Under Difficulties 17 The Seven Great Problems of Marriage 23 The Seven Pillars of Desertion and Divorce 38 How to Get Up 39 In Bed with a Nice Person 44 How to Invite Somebody to Bed 55 Bed Manners in a Haunted House 58 Suzygophobia 64 The Freedom of the Seas 66 How to Be a Charming Convalescent at Home 71 A Woman’s Best Friend is Her Hot-Water Bottle 88 Bed Manners in a Country House 91 So You Don’t Sleep Well! 106 Advice to Those About to Marry 115

Book SynopsisIt has been remarked that if the brain were so simple we could understand it, we would be so simple we couldn’t. Commencing with a brief history of neuroscience, from the ancient practice of drilling holes in the head to relieve headaches to the latest results from MRI and CT scans, this accessible guide sets out to explore exactly what we do know about the brain. Including the most up-to-date research on the cerebral processes behind a wide array of human activity – from our capacity for language to how we remember – this lively and entertaining introduction assumes no previous scientific knowledge and offers a tantalizing glimpse into man’s most complex organ.Trade ReviewScientific and Medical Network, "This is a thoughtfully set out book that is more accessible than the Oxford very short introduction for the general reader."Garth Nicholson - Associate Professor of Medical Genetics, University of Sydney, "A virtuoso performance! The book is technical, easy to read and entertaining."Scientific and Medical Network - "This is a thoughtfully set out book that is more accessible than the Oxford very short introduction for the general reader."
