Simon & Schuster The Glass Castle A Memoir

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisTHE BELOVED #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER—FROM THE AUTHOR OF HANG THE MOON The extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly) memoir from one of the world’s most gifted storytellers. The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family. The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered. The Glass Castle is truly astonishing—a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family. The memoir was also made into a major motion picture from Lionsgate in 2017 starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts.

  • Inner Traditions Bear and Company Total Reflexology of the Hand: An Advanced Guide

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisOne of the most defining physical characteristics of humanity, the hands contain reflex zones and pressure points related to the systems and organs of the body just like the feet. The reflex zones and points of the hands present the most effective means of treating psychological and neurological disorders due to their sophisticated relationship with the brain. Applying her ground-breaking combination of reflexology and craniosacral therapy to the hands, Dr. Martine Faure-Alderson explains how to use hand reflexology to treat the brain and each of the body’s systems, from the digestive system to the human energetic system. She provides precise full-color mapped hand diagrams illustrating the exact placement of the points according to the bones of the hands, the result of more than 40 years of research and clinical practice. She explains how to use the occipital zones of craniosacral therapy to pinpoint which zones and points on the hands to treat. Examining the psychological level of brain-hand interactions, the author reveals how neurological dysfunctions and mental disorders respond more readily to hand reflexology than to other forms of therapies. She explains how many physical ailments have a psychological component and how reflexology automatically triggers the release of endorphins by working directly on the autonomic nervous system.Trade Review“An essential resource for anyone interested in balancing the brain and craniosacral systems through reflexology. The superbly detailed illustrations on craniosacral reflexology are a treasure trove of valuable information for healers. If you want to know how to affect the cranium, spine, and brain through working with the hand, then Total Reflexology of the Hand is an indispensable guidebook that will benefit both you and your clients.” * Joyce Thom, founder of ThePATH.us and coauthor of Craniosacral Chi Kung *“Total Reflexology of the Hand is a ‘must-have’ for all reflexologists seeking to deepen their knowledge and take their practice to whole new levels. It is elegant and insightful in its holistic approach to integrating the brain-body with the cranial concept in hand reflexology. This book is a joy to read and learn from. I highly recommend it.” * Carol Faguy, RCRT/MCSRI, teacher with Cranio-Sacral Reflexology International Academy of Excellence *“This is a complementary approach that we can use in our practice to help our patients. Book SynopsisHow often have you heard someone say, "I don't understand him"? Sometimes irrational, unforeseen acts seem to be the norm among our fellows. The fact is, there has never been a workable method to invariably predict human behavior-until now. L. Ron Hubbard developed just such a method, and it is applicable to all men, without exception. With this data, it is possible to accurately predict the behavior of a potential spouse, a business partner, employee or friend - before you commit to a relationship. The risks involved in human interaction can be avoided entirely or minimized when you can infallibly predict how people will behave. By understanding and using the information in this chapter, all aspects of human relationships will become more productive and more fulfilling. You'll know who to associate with, who to avoid, and you will be able to help those who are mired in uncomfortable situations with others. Imagine knowing, after a very short time, how people will behave in any given circumstance. You can. Each and every time.

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisRate your pain on a scale of one to ten. What about on a scale of spicy to citrus? Is it more like a lava lamp or a mosaic? Pain, though a universal element of human experience, is dimly understood and sometimes barely managed. Pain Woman Takes Your Keys, and Other Essays from a Nervous System is a collection of literary and experimental essays about living with chronic pain.Trade Review"If this isn't the book that we in the pain community need in 2017, I don't know what is."—Matt Mendenhall, Pain-Free Living Magazine"The theorist Elaine Scarry, in her magnum opus The Body in Pain, writes, 'The utter rigidity of pain itself is that its resistance to language is not simply one of its incidental or accidental tributes but is essential to what it is.' One can see Sonya Huber's Pain Woman Takes Your Keys, and Other Essays from a Nervous System as a glorious refusal of what Scarry puts forth. With ardor and valor, Huber renders the lived experience of chronic pain and all that attends it in a language all her own, written—as she so wonderfully phrases it—using 'pain's alphabet.' These essays make imprecision their enemy as they comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. Pain Woman further establishes Sonya Huber as one of the most exciting voices writing creative nonfiction today." —Vincent Scarpa, Electric Literature "Sonya Huber has restored my faith in chronic illness narratives. . . . Now, if I have my way, this book will sneak its way into the lives of many future readers, regardless of their personal experience with chronic illness."—Taylor Wilke, Rumpus“Sonya Huber works magic by articulating the indescribable. With her lyrically written and witty account, she better describes her own pain experience than a patient rating scale of 1 to 10 ever could.”—Paula Kamen, author of All in My Head “This is an important book, a necessary book, a book that, in the right hands, could change how our medical establishment deals with pain. These essays are at once vulnerable and fierce, funny and smart, unflinching and dappled with stunning metaphor.”—Gayle Brandeis, author of Fruitflesh “Huber has captured what it is to be a woman who lives with chronic pain in all its nuanced complexity.”—Sarah Einstein, author of Mot: A MemoirTable of ContentsPreface Acknowledgments I. • The Viagra Myth The Surprising Impact on Love

Jossey Bass The Viagra Myth The Surprising Impact on Love

Book SynopsisShows us that while Viagra has proved enormously helpful to many men, it has also uncovered previously ignored aspects of identity and authenticity in sexuality and relationships. This title provides insight and instruction about the reality of quick-fix solutions, sexuality, personal growth, and meaningful relationships.Trade ReviewMorgentaler, a practicing urologist and a professor at Harvard Medical School who has done research on erectile dysfunction, wants to explode the "notion of Viagra as an automatic solution, as the quick fix to all sexual problems." He has no problems with the millions of prescriptions of Viagra that doctors have make since the drug was introduced in 1998. But he is effective at presenting facts that are not so well known, such as that the drug works in 80% of men with performance anxiety but only two-thirds of men with other types of erectile dysfunction. What he does best, however, is to demonstrate how "a firm erection cannot solve deeper problems." Each chapter describes a situation in which a patient who thought that Viagra was the answer to his problems finds that there are other explanations. In one, a man learns that his performance problems have to do with the lack of trust he and his partner share; in another, a man who thinks that Viagra will make his sexual performance last the right time learns that "studies have shown that humans average only a minute and a half for the sexual encounters." Short bullet-point summaries of important information at the end of each chapter and an excellent section of "Frequently Asked Questions About Viagra" help make this book an important resource for both physicians and patients who are contemplating prescribing or using the drug, but who may be doing so for all the wrong reasons. (Oct.) (Piblishers Weekly, August 18, 2003) "...reveals for the first time the drug's popularity is waning as it leaves a trail of broken relationships and shattered expectations in its wake." (The Independent, 27 August 2003) "...warns that the drug may be killing passion rather than igniting it." (The New Zealand Herald, 28 August 2003) "...argues that the drug's side effects are not so much medical as emotional." (The Independent, 29 August 2003) Viagra can help many men, asserts urologist Morgentaler (Harvard Medical Sch.; The Male Body). But its cure-all-penises reputation is only a myth. It is most effective for erectile dysfunction caused by performance anxiety, less so for premature ejaculation and for medically caused problems. Viagra cannot supply desire, guarantee partner satisfaction, or rescue a relationship aground on different issues. Moreover, secret use of the drug can raise issues of trust and honesty with a partner. Yet there are effective treatments for when Viagra fails-injections, implants, vacuum devices, and couple therapy. Morgentaler's needed corrective is readable and well organized, with case histories and summaries - plus a chapter on gay relationships. Unfortunately, it lacks a resource section, guidelines for finding a doctor/therapist, and illustrations. A good general work on sexual dysfunction is Lawrence Hakim's The Couple's Disease, and Robert Butler and Myrna Lewis's The New Love and Sex After 60 is also highly recommended. Morgentaler's books is a valuable if imperfect addition to collections where Viagra books circulate frequently. (Index not seen.) —Martha Cornog, Philadelphia (Library Journal, October 1, 2003)Table of ContentsDedication. Acknowledgments. Introduction. Chapter 1: Viagra And The Perfect Cure. Chapter 2: The Viagra Edge: Is Harder Better? Chapter 3: Performance Anxiety and Viagra. Chapter 4: Viagra And Desire. Chapter 5: Viagra And Premature Ejaculation. Read it if you’re ready to stop dieting and start loving yourself and your life!” —Alan Levinovitz, PhD, author of The Gluten Lie “What a pleasure to read such a sensible, self-loving book about improving one’s health. • Healing through Trigger Point Therapy: A Guide to

North Atlantic Books,U.S. Healing through Trigger Point Therapy: A Guide to

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is about empowerment for chronic pain patients and care providers alike. Every chronic pain condition has a treatable myofascial trigger point component, including fibromyalgia. Many of the localized symptoms now considered as fibromyalgia are actually due to trigger points. The central sensitization of fibromyalgia amplifies symptoms that trigger points cause, and this book teaches care providers and patients how to identify and treat those causes.   Chronic myofascial pain due to trigger points can be body-wide, and can cause or maintain fibromyalgia central sensitization. Trigger points can cause and/or maintain or contribute to many types of pain and dysfunction, including numbness and tingling, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, osteoarthritis, cognitive dysfunctions and disorientation, impotence, incontinence, loss of voice, pelvic pain, muscle weakness, menstrual pain, TMJ dysfunction, shortness of breath, and many symptoms attributed to old age or "atypical" or psychological sources.   Trigger point therapy has been around for decades, but only recently have trigger points been imaged at the Mayo Clinic and National Institutes of Health. Their ubiquity and importance is only now being recognized.   Devin Starlanyl is a medically trained chronic myofascial pain and fibromyalgia researcher and educator, as well as a patient with both of these conditions. She has provided chronic pain education and support to thousands of patients and care providers around the world for decades. John Sharkey is a physiologist with more than twenty-seven years of anatomy experience, and the director of a myofascial pain facility. Together they have written a comprehensive reference to trigger point treatment to help patients with fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, and many other conditions.   This guide will be useful for all types of doctors, nurses, therapists, bodyworkers, and lay people, facilitating communication between care providers and patients and empowering patients who now struggle with all kinds of misunderstood and unexplained symptoms.   Part 1 explains what trigger points are and how they generate symptoms, refer pain and other symptoms to other parts of the body, and create a downward spiral of dysfunction. The authors look at the interconnection between fibromyalgia and myofascial trigger points and their possible causes and symptoms; identify stressors that perpetuate trigger points such as poor posture, poor breathing habits, nutritional inadequacies, lack of sleep, and environmental and psychological factors; and provide a list of over one hundred pain symptoms and their most common corresponding trigger point sources.   Part 2 describes the sites of trigger points and their referral patterns within each region of the body, and provides pain relief solutions for fibromyalgia and trigger point patients and others with debilitating symptoms. Pain treatment plans include both self-help remedies for the patient—stretching or postural exercises, self-massage techniques and prevention strategies—as well as diagnostic and treatment hints for care providers.   Part 3 offers guidance for both patients and care providers in history taking, examination, and palpation skills, as well as treatment options. It offers a vision for the future that includes early assessment, adequate medical training, prevention of fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, changes to chronic pain management and possible solutions to the health care crisis, and a healthier version of our middle age and golden years, asserting that patients have a vital role to play in the management of their own health.

Book SynopsisI have been exiled from my body. I was ejected at a very young age and I got lost.Playwright, author and activist Eve Ensler has devoted her life to the female body - how to talk about it, how to protect and value it. Yet she spent many years disassociated from her own - a disconnection brought on by her father''s sexual abuse and her mother''s remoteness. While working in the Congo, Ensler is shattered to encounter the horrific rape and violence inflicted on the women there. Soon after, she is diagnosed with uterine cancer, and through months of treatment she is forced to become first and foremost a body - pricked, punctured, cut, scanned. It is then that all distance is erased. As she connects her own illness to the devastation of the earth, her life force to the resilience of humanity, she is finally, fully - and gratefully - joined to the body of the world.Trade ReviewA masterpiece. Ensler has accomplished the impossible: weaving together huge, bold, world-changing ideas with beautiful writing, amazing metaphors, and original structure. Truly one of the most courageous and original works of our time. * Naomi Klein *Raw and powerful . . . unforgettable * the New York Times *The passion of her writing rattles your soul. What a thrill and what a spear through the heart. I am astounded by the honesty and clarity of each word * Elizabeth Lesser *Ensler has written a profound and vulnerable book, full of tenderness and strength. I was amazed by the clarity of her vision and the power of her message about the body and self. This book isn't meant only for patients; it is meant for anyone whose life has intersected with illness - in short, for all of us. * Siddhartha Mukherjee *Stunning * Chicago Tribune *Moving . . . Ensler writes with verve and urgency about dealing with disease, facing her demons, and repairing relationships * More *Astonishing * Mary Oliver *
