Book SynopsisThis is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International license. It is free to read at [Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations.Epic poetry and tragic drama provide us with some of the richest ancient Greek depictions of women who are married to soldiers. In tales of the Trojan War, as told by Homer, Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, we encounter these mythical warriors'' wives: Penelope, isolated but resourceful as she awaits the return of Odysseus after his lengthy absence; the war widow Andromache, enslaved and displaced from her homeland after the fall of Troy; the unfaithful and murderous Clytemnestra; and Tecmessa, a war captive who witnesses her partner''s breakdown and suicide in the aftermath of battle. Warriors'' Wives compares the experiences of these mythical characters with those of contemporary military spouses. Emma Bridges traces aspects of the lives of warriors'' wives--mythical and real, ancient and modern--from the moment of farewell, through periods of separation and reunion, to the often traumatic aftermath of war, to consider the emotional, psychological, and social impacts of life as a military spouse. By unearthing a wealth of contemporary evidence for the lives of the often silenced and unacknowledged partners of those who serve in the military, and by examining this alongside the ancient stories of warriors'' wives, Warriors'' Wives sheds fresh light on the experience of being married to the military.Table of ContentsIntroduction 1: Farewell: Andromache in the Iliad 2: Sacrifice: Clytemnestra in Aeschylus' Agamemnon and Euripides' Iphigenia at Aulis 3: Separation: Penelope in the Odyssey 4: Infidelity: Clytemnestra in Homeric poetry and Athenian tragedy 5: Reunion: Penelope, Clytemnestra, and Trojan War homecomings 6: Aftermath: Euripides' Trojan Women and Andromache, and the Tecmessa of Sophocles' Ajax Epilogue

Book SynopsisA feminist reinterpretation of the myths surrounding Cleopatra casts new light on the Egyptian queen and her legacyTrade Review“Francine Prose offers a feminist reinterpretation of the life of the Egyptian queen. Her chapter ‘Cleopatra on Film’ features biting observations.”—Martin Chilton, Independent, “Books of the Month”“What distinguishes this book from [previous biographies] is the author’s efficient and persuasive writing style. Prose’s prose is, predictably, beautiful. The urban Mediterranean, which forms the background for much of the narrative, is compellingly described. The author’s acerbic deconstruction of harmful tropes further adds to the book’s distinctive tone.”—Arienne King, World History Encyclopedia“This account stands out from the rest by highlighting the racist, imperialist and orientalist nature of Cleopatra’s portrayals, and for this it should be applauded.”—Emma Southon, author of A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

Book SynopsisMany of us believe we are saved by grace--but for too many, that''s the last time grace defines our life. Instead of walking in grace every day, we strive to be good, believing that the Christian life means hard work with an unshakable good mood. When we fail to measure up to our own impossible standards, we hide behind our good-girl masks, determined to keep our weakness a secret. In Grace for the Good Girl, Emily P. Freeman invites women to let go of the try-hard life and realize that in Christ we are free to receive from him rather than constantly try to achieve for him. With an open hand and a whimsical style, Emily encourages women to move from hiding behind masks and do-good performances to the freedom of a life hidden with Christ in God.

Book SynopsisA collection of essays by Alexander addressing the implications of transnational thinking for our understanding of gender, sex, sexuality, and raceTrade Review“Pedagogies of Crossing is a tour de force. M. Jacqui Alexander addresses the conditions that make multiculturalism possible and powerfully shows us that those conditions are ultimately ethical and spiritual. Beautifully written and deeply moving, this book shows us how we need an ethic of translation if we are to be able to engage in classroom teaching so that both students and teachers can grapple with the politics of our complex, globalized world. Pedagogies of Crossing is a must read for anyone in women’s studies, anthropology, political science, English, comparative literature, or sociology.”—Drucilla Cornell, author of Defending Ideals: War, Democracy, and Political Struggles“In Pedagogies of Crossing, M. Jacqui Alexander ventures an archaeology of the heart to cross over to the ‘other side’ of knowing, returning the sacred to the classroom. Here the ‘altar of the secular gods of postmodernity’ is finally dismantled and we are urged the freedom to think before and beyond them. I am indebted to this sister-scholar-in-arms.” —Cherríe Moraga, coeditor of This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color“[A] comprehensive, extensive exploration of Alexander’s journey through migration stories (including her own), through academe, the academy and teaching, and through African and Caribbean colonized identities and sexualized politics. Her collection contributes a great deal to the feminist examination of the need to remember, to communicate the experiences of women of colour, including the spiritual survival of women of colour by finding room for the inclusion the Sacred and sacred experiences, as she steps away from the secularized view of experience and power that post-modernism has brought about.” -- Laure E. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisPregnancy is so thoroughly entangled with birth and babies in the popular imagination that a pregnancy which ends in miscarriage consistently appears as a failure or a waste of time indeed, as not proper to pregnancy at all. But in this compelling book, Victoria Browne argues that reflection on miscarriage actually deepens and expands our understanding of pregnancy, forcing us to consider what pregnancy can amount to besides the production of a child. By exploring common themes within personal accounts of miscarriageincluding feelings of failure, self-blame and being stuck in limbo'Pregnancy Without Birth critically interrogates teleological discourses and disciplinary ideologies that elevate birth as pregnancy's natural' and normal' endpoint. As well as politicizing miscarriage as a feminist issue, the book articulates an alternative intercorporeal philosophy of pregnancy which embraces variation, invites us to sit with ambiguity, contingency and suspension, and enables us toTrade ReviewDeftly weaving together insights from first-hand accounts, philosophical analyses, and the social sciences, Browne argues persuasively that birth-centric models of pregnancy necessarily fail to grasp the complex, ambiguous phenomenon that is miscarriage. Her careful and insightful analysis provides a welcome contribution to scholarly conversations on gender, embodiment, and reproductive subjectivity. * Ann J. Cahill, Professor of Philosophy, Elon University, USA *Browne presents a vital call for solidarity in these times of increasing criminalization of pregnancy. Her understanding of agency is embodied and contextual, rather than a matter of straightforward choice. This compelling framework enables a relational politics of care for and among pregnant people, regardless of the results of a pregnancy. * Sarah LaChance Adams, Florida Blue Distinguished Professor, University of North Florida, USA *Politicizing miscarriage as a feminist issue, and a question for philosophy, Pregnancy Without Birth breaks open the stigma and shame surrounding miscarriage and offers a powerful, timely and radical thesis about the politics of pregnancy, both with and without birth. Book SynopsisFrom a Pulitzer Prize–winning writer comes an exuberant memoir of personal loss and longing, and finding connection on the remote Azorean Islands of the Atlantic Ocean. Reporter Diana Marcum is in crisis. A long-buried personal sadness is enfolding her—and her career is stalled—when she stumbles upon an unusual group of immigrants living in rural California. She follows them on their annual return to the remote Azorean Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, where bulls run down village streets, volcanoes are active, and the people celebrate festas to ease their saudade, a longing so deep that the Portuguese word for it can’t be fully translated. Years later, California is in a terrible drought, the wildfires seem to never end, and Diana finds herself still dreaming of those islands and the chuva—a rain so soft you don’t notice when it begins or ends. With her troublesome Labrador retriever, Murphy, in tow, Diana returns to the islands of her dreams only to discover that there are still things she longs for—and one of them may be a most unexpected love. An Amazon Charts Most Read book.Trade Review“In her engaging travel memoir [Marcum] captures the spirit of saudade with an eye for detail and a playful earnestness…In the remote islands of the Azores, Marcum seems to have found her spot.” —The New York Times Book Review “If you need a summer vacation but can’t get out of town, take a trip to the Azores with Diana Marcum. Her travel memoir about her special connection to the islands will make you want to drop everything and hop on the next flight to paradise.” —HelloGiggles “Lazy mornings, family intrigue, cantankerous bulls, hope. Diana Marcum found it all on a potato-shaped island in the middle of the Atlantic. And thank goodness she did, for the resulting tale is as inspirational as it is entertaining. Marcum is the perfect travel companion: smart, open-minded, and just the right amount of funny. She’s also endearing, in a Bad News Bears sort of way, and by the end of The Tenth Island I found myself not only liking her but rooting for her too.” —Eric Weiner, author of The Geography of Bliss

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFriendships can be the foundation of our earliest memories and most formative moments. But why are they often seen as secondary to romantic, or familial connection, something to age out of and take a back seat to other relationships? BFFs is an examination of the power of female friendship, not as something lesser, but as a site of radical intimacy, as told through the cultural touchstones around us. From coming-of-age tales through physical intimacy and discovering personhood to break ups and parting of ways, Behrooz considers the vast significance of our friendships through the work of Toni Morrison and Elena Ferrante, Booksmart and Grey’s Anatomy, Insecure, The Virgin Suicides and beyond. To have a life rich in love is often viewed through a specific lens; BFFs shows us that friendship can offer a more expansive and emancipatory understanding of female intimacy, and can be the most important, loving relationships in our lives.

Dreyfus, Times Literary Supplement "... the best introduction to [Heidegger's] thought that has yet appeared." - Graduate Faculty Philosophy Journal, New School for Social Research "... for all students and scholars Basic Problems will provide the 'missing link' between Husserl and Heidegger, between phenomenology and Being and Time." -Teaching Philosophy "Perhaps the most generally accessible text that Heidegger published ... the translation is superb."-The Key Reporter A lecture course that Martin Heidegger gave in 1927, The Basic Problems of Phenomenology continues and extends explorations begun in Being and Time. In Basic Problems Heidegger provides the general outline of his thinking about the fundamental problems of philosophy, which he treats by means of phenomenology, and which he defines and explains as the basic problems of ontology.

It also examines the interface between disability studies, women's studies and medical sociology, and offers an accessible review of contemporary debates and theoretical approaches. The title Female Forms reflects two things about the book: first, its use of disabled women's experiences, as told by themselves, to bring a number of themes to life, and second, the author's belief in the importance of feminist ideas and debates for disability studies. A refusal to back down to an oppressive, reductive version of history. Book SynopsisTraditionally, a woman's place was never on stormy seas. But actually thousands of dancers, purserettes, doctors, stewardesses, captains and conductresses have taken to the waves on everything from floating palaces to battered windjammers. Their daring story is barely known, even by today's seawomen. From before the 1750s, women fancying an oceangoing life had either to disguise themselves as cabin boys' or acquire a co-operative husband with a ship attached. Early pioneers faced superstition and discrimination in the briny monasteries'. Today women captain cruise ships as big as towns and work at the highest level in the global maritime industry. This comprehensive exploration looks at the Merchant Navy, comparing it to the Royal Navy in which Wrens only began sailing in 1991. Using interviews and sources never before published, Jo Stanley vividly reveals the incredible journey across time taken by these brave and lively women salts.
