Book SynopsisAnne Gjelsvik is Professor in Film Studies in the Department of Art and Media Studies at Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway. Her research includes popular cinema, film violence, representation of gender in the media, and adaptation studies. Among her recent publications are Eastwood's Iwo Jima: A Critical Engagement with Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima (2013, co-edited with Rikke Schubart) and Adaptation Studies: New Challenges, New Directions (2013).Rikke Schubart is Associate Professor in Media Studies at the Institute for the Study of Culture, University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark. Her research focuses on gender, genre, and emotions in cinema and media. Schubart's publications include Mastering Fear: Women, Emotions, and Contemporary Horror (forthcoming), Eastwood's Iwo Jima: A Critical Engagement with Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima (2013, co-edited with Anne Trade ReviewA new collection of essays, Women of Ice and Fire: Gender, Game of Thrones and Multiple Media Engagements explores the role and representation of women in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books and its cultural adaptations. * The Conversation *This is not just another academic book exploring a popular culture phenomenon and the representation of women inside this phenomenon, it is the contemporary reference work to the representation of female characters in the A Song of Ice and Fire books, the TV series (Game of Thrones) and other transmedia adaptations. * Pop-Zeitschrift *Together, the contributions provide a welcome and nuanced analysis of the female figure in relation to fantasy ... It is recommended for readers of all genders. * Norsk Medietidsskrift (Bloomsbury translation) *Game of Thrones and controversy go pretty much fist in gauntlet. And nowhere more so than around its presentations of nudity, sex and sexual violence on screen. Arya … Brienne … Cersei … Daenerys … Ellaria: just the start of an alphabet of complex female characters whose actions and sufferings have been hotly debated. So, can academic criticism take us beyond simple praise vs. condemnation? Oh yes. Agreement? Now that really would be fantasy. Instead, this book elaborates on the debates around particular characters, scenes and narrative adaptation decisions, to great effect. Pretty much all varieties of contemporary feminist analysis are well represented here. The issues are clearly important – but there is also fun to be had, deciding who you (dis)agree with, and why. * Martin Barker, Emeritus Professor of Film & Television Studies and Principal Investigator in Lord of the Ring and Hobbit Audience Projects, Aberystwyth University, UK *The popularity of the HBO Game of Thrones is sensational, and thus a scholarly collection that brings together different perspectives—from gender, genre, television and film, adaptation, and fan studies—is a welcome contribution especially as it engages with the most controversial aspects of the show. By focusing on women characters in George R.R. Martin’s novels, Game of Thrones, and its video-game and wiki byproducts, collectively these essays confirm just how powerful gender politics and sexualized violence are in the production and consumption of fantasy across media today. By taking fan and other public discussions of the show seriously, the book also invites us to consider there may be something new in women’s engagement with fantasy. * Cristina Bacchilega, Professor of English, University of Hawai‘i-Manoa, USA *Women of Ice and Fire: Gender, Game of Thrones, and Multiple Media Engagements is an anthology that needed to be written and must be read. This book presents a series of thoughtful and engaging essays about the female characters who populate the universe of this incredibly successful book and television series. Women of Ice and Fire is an excellent study of the rich tapestry of women – from the progressive to the conventional, the monstrous to the glorious – who give life to the fantastic world that has captured the hearts of millions. * Angela Ndalianis, Head of Screen and Cultural Studies, University of Melbourne, Australia *Table of ContentsIntroduction Rikke Schubart, University of Southern Denmark, & Anne Gjelsvik, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway Adapting Sex: Cultural Conceptions of Sexuality in Words and Images Mariah Larsson, Stockholm University, Sweden Adapting Desire: Wives, Prostitutes, and Smallfolk Shannon Wells-Lassagne, Université de Bretagne Sud, France Unspeakable Acts of (Sexual) Terror as/in Quality Television Anne Gjelsvik, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway Sworn Swords and Noble Ladies: Female Characters in Game of Thrones Video Games Felix Schröter, Universität Hamburg, Germany Woman With Dragons: Daenerys, Pride, and Postfeminist Possibilities Rikke Schubart, University of Southern Denmark Power Play and Family Ties: Hybrid Fantasy, Network Narrative, and Female Characters Helle Kannik Haastrup, Roskilde University, Denmark Mother, Maiden, Crone: Motherhood in Westeros Marta Eidsvåg, freelance writer, UK Women Warriors From Chivalry to Vengeance Yvonne Tasker, University of East Anglia, UK, & Lindsay Steenberg, Oxford Brookes University, UK Female Machiavellians in Westeros Elizabeth Beaton, Australian National University, Australia The Expert Female Fan Recap on YouTube Susana Tosca, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, & Lisbeth Klastrup, University of Copenhagen, Denmark “I’m Not Going to Fight Them, I’m Going to Fuck Them”: Sexist Liberalism and Gender (A)Politics in Game of Thrones Stéphanie Genz, Edge Hill University, UK About the Contributors Full Bibliography Index

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Transitional: In One Way or Another, We All
Book SynopsisWATERSTONES' BEST BOOKS OF 2023: POLITICS ‘A riveting blend of memoir and manifesto ... I found myself dog-earing every page’ Elizabeth Day 'Profoundly articulate. Entirely wise. Beautifully real.' Attitude ‘Transitional is a clever, moving book that packs a lot into its 194 pages’ Guardian Transitioning is an alignment of the invisible and the physical. It is truth rising to the surface. It is one of the most fundamental aspects of the human condition – a part of our experience as a conscious being, no matter who we are. As time goes on, we all develop as people. We all transition. It’s what unites us, not what separates us. In this life-affirming, heartfelt and intimate book, activist and model Munroe Bergdorf shares reflections from her own life to illustrate how transitioning is an essential part of all our lives. Through the story of one woman’s extraordinary mission to live with authenticity, Transitional shows us how to heal, how to build a stronger community and how to evolve as a society out of shame and into pride. ------ PRAISE FOR THE AUTHOR: ‘Bergdorf is proof that speaking up for what you believe in can provoke real change’ Vogue ‘A phenomenon’ Owen Jones, Guardian ‘A powerful and unstoppable new force . . . Whether it’s growing up and coming of age, reacting to the things that happen to us, learning from our mistakes, dealing with trauma or finding love, we all evolve. This is the book that explores the things that bind us together * Stylist *A manifesto on gender and an exploration of transitioning * GQ *By shining a light on the inevitable reality of change, it aims to bring us together and build a more understanding and inclusive world * Dazed *A compelling non-fiction title from the model and activist that discusses fluidity of identity, sexuality and gender through the experience of transition every human faces at some point in their life * Huffington Post *An intimate and life affirming exploration * Luxury London *I am forever in awe of Munroe and all of the incredible things she does * Clara Amfo *The transgender and model is trailblazing a way for the trans community through her activism * Dailymail *A riveting blend of memoir and manifesto . . . so enlightening and quotable, I found myself dog-earing every page -- Elizabeth DayAs you start reading Transitional, it might come as little surprise that every word of this honest and enriching book feels very carefully chosen. Then, as she settles into her story, you come to realise the extraordinary intelligence, insight and power of this tenacious woman. She writes unflinchingly about growing up different; a childhood spent trying to conceal the innate femininity that would distress family members, and the ostracisation she experienced at school. Profoundly articulate. Entirely wise. Beautifully real. * Attitude *It's in this era of the complete dehumanisation of trans people that Munroe Bergdorf’s debut book, Transitional, is needed more than ever. Transitional is a memoir that offers hope. It stretches way beyond Bergdorf’s own gender transition story to explore the many transitions we all go through in our brief time on this earth. Crucially, it reframes the conversation away from the medicalisation of trans people – such a small part of the trans experience – and shifts focus onto the real story, sheer humanity. * Vice *The model and trans activist writes movingly on prejudice, navigating controversy and personal growth * Guardian *

Rowman & Littlefield Who Runs the World
Book SynopsisThe under-representation of women in decision-making roles is an issue of pressing national and international significance. Calls are being made for more ethical, careful and connected forms of leadership popularly gendered as female. Concerns are being extended from adult women to girlhood as initiatives encouraging girls to aspire to leadership proliferate. Both political and corporate discourses are coalescing around girls as the potential leaders who can deliver a more equal and secure future. At the same time, traditional media sources represent women leaders in demeaning, diminishing and stereotyped ways, and women leaders are subjected to unprecedented abuse via social media. Leadership itself continues to be characterised as masculine in popular and corporate realms.Concerns about the proportion and visibility of women leaders too often translate into role model' solutions for girls based on simplistic ideas of gender-matching. In such solutions the complexities of relationships that young people may have with media figures are reduced to a matter of inspiration leading to imitation; few consider the cultural contexts in which girls encounter leadership figures, the meanings girls attach to them, and how these are embedded in girls' everyday lives and media practices.Drawing on research conducted in schools, youth organisations and online, this book investigates what girls apprehend leadership to mean in their own lives, and in their discussions of popular media representations of women leaders. It seeks to add to understandings of the role of public figures in girls' identities and aspirations, and particularly in shaping their ideas about power, influence and social change.

Rowman & Littlefield Polyamorous Elders: Aging in Open Relationships
Book SynopsisThis book explores the unique group of elders, age 55 and older, who practice some form of consensual non-monogamy. It covers both the joys and challenges of multiple relationships for elders. Poly elders have the complexities of juggling multiple relationships, as well as managing all the issues of aging: managing medical conditions and disabilities (their own and/or their partners’), caregiving responsibilities for aging relatives, grieving the deaths of parents, siblings, and partners, retiring from careers and starting new lives, and/or moving into some form of senior living. Elders appear to be the fastest-growing segment of the polyamorous community. About one-fifth of Americans have been in a polyamorous relationship at some point, and around 5% currently are practicing it. Many elders have practiced polyamory for over 40 years, and are currently in stable, very long-term relationships. The book provides anecdotes from poly elders’ lives, including the constellation of relationships surrounding each individual, couple, or triad. It explores how their relationships develop and evolve. Many of the issues that face older poly folks are issues directly related to aging, but they usually have a uniquely poly "spin" to them that can make them more complex and challenging. Trade ReviewAs a Relational Therapist who works with polyamorous clients, I was delighted to read Polyamorous Elders. This book offers a comprehensive and evidence-based guide to better understand the lived experiences of aging polyamorous folks. After reading Polyamorous Elders, I believe that practitioners will be more equipped to facilitate effective individual and relational therapeutic services to polyamorous clients. -- Carling Mashinter, MSc, registered psychotherapist, Relationship Matters Therapy CentreHaving enjoyed Kathy Labriola's previous work, I was delighted to read her latest. She approaches polyamorous relationships with an accessible, thoughtful, and deft sense of compassion and thorough research. -- Rosie Wilby, author of Is Monogamy Dead? and The Breakup MonologuesThis text is a readable and engaging look into the lives of polyamorous elders. It is suitable for researchers or clinical practitioners hoping to apply the work, but would also serve well as an entranceway for academics and students investigating sex and aging and looking for more data and overall consideration of polyamorous relationships. A timely topic deserving of more attention. -- Jeanne Marie Kusina, interim director of The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning; Distinguished University Lecturer, The University of ToledoThis book is engaging, accessible, expansive, and detailed. Obviously, it helps that the topic is fascinating, but Labriola presents these issues and cases in a straightforward and non-judgmental fashion. I routinely had my assumptions challenged even though I consider myself open-minded and have studied polyamory and human sexuality for several years. The strengths of this text include the author's expertise and clinical experience, the broad variety of polyamorous relationships presented, sympathetic attention to their challenges, and the good faith effort to honor intersectionality so as to sufficiently represent as many polyamorous people and relationships as possible. -- Albert Spencer, Communications Director, Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy and assistant professor, Department of Philosophy, Portland State UniversityThis book uniquely considers the special needs and outlook of people 55+ who identify as polyamorous. Not just an overview or a self-help book, the approach and information are very well-supported from the author's deep knowledge of polyamory, polyamorous communities, and her ongoing work with aging clients. -- Annalisa Castaldo, associate professor of English, Director of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, Widener UniversityThis is an essential guide for counselors, therapists and healthcare professionals working with polyamorous clients. The author has managed to address so many issues, from sex life to retirement to facing death and grief, and has done so insightfully, drawing on several case studies. As a family therapist and an openly polyamorous person over 50, I am thrilled to see this book finally out in the world! -- Alex Iantaffi, PhD, MS, SEP, CST, LMFT, award-winning author of Gender Trauma: Healing Cultural, Social, and Historical Gendered Trauma and independent scholarIn Polyamous Elders: Aging in Open Relationships, Kathy Labriola gives us an intimate window into the lives of older individuals whose zest for life still burns bright. Whether for love, sex, companionship or all of the above, older individuals know they have earned the right to choose the path that fits them best and enables them to enjoy levels of satisfaction and bliss that often elude the younger and less experienced. My wish for you, dear reader, is that these personal stories will inspire you to live your life to its very fullest regardless of your age. -- Veronica Monet, ACS, author, coach, and founder of The Shame Free ZoneAs both an aspiring “polygeezer” and CNM (consensual non-monogamy) psychologist, this volume spoke to my heart and my practice. Labriola’s work opens up the often untold stories of polyamorous elders and allows us to learn from their lived experiences and worlds. The accounts Labriola shares are multifaceted and honest portrayals of the distinct challenges polyamorous elders face and the ways that they are navigated! -- Elizabeth Duke, PsyDTable of ContentsIntroductionWhat is the Prevalence of Polyamory Among Elders?“The Greatest Generation” and the “Baby Boomers”Intersectionality and Poly EldersStudies that Attempt to Fill in the Gaps on Information about Poly EldersResearch MethodsThe Demographics of Case Studies and Examples Presented of Poly Elders Part I: What Challenges are Most Common for Poly Geezers?Chapter 1: First of All, Sex!The Changing Nature of Sex for Poly GeezersCase Study #1: EliseThe Challenges of Sex for Poly GeezersJoshua’s StoryGinny’s storyCase Study #2: DaniloCase Study #3: AnastasiaJesse’s storyCase Study #4: LibbyStrategies Developed by Poly Elders to Solve the Sexual Changes of AgingCase Study #5: Jake and NoraCase Study #6: JosephCase Study #7: SitaMarilyn’s StoryCase Study #8: LiseJana’s StoryBeing Poly can Help Couples Navigate Sexual Problems and Find Delightful SolutionsCase Study #9: Jordan and LourdesCase Study #10: Dolly and JimChapter 2: Some Poly People Shift to Monogamy as They AgeCase Study #1: Mary and GeneCase Study #2: Vicky and BartCase Study #3: Terry and RandyChapter 3: Poly Elders and Celibacy: Is There a Contradiction? Wilfrid Laurier University Press Reclaiming Canadian Bodies: Visual Media and Representation
Book SynopsisThe central focus of Reclaiming Canadian Bodies is the relationship between visual media, the construction of Canadian national identity, and notions of embodiment. It asks how particular representations of bodies are constructed and performed within the context of visual and discursive mediated content. The book emphasizes the ways individuals destabilize national mainstream visual tropes, which in turn have the potential to destabilize nationalist messages. Drawing upon rich empirical research and relevant theory, the contributors ask how and why particular bodies (of Estonian immigrants, sports stars, First Nations peoples, self-identified homosexuals, and women) are either promoted and upheld as "Canadian" bodies while others are marginalized in or excluded from media representations. Essays are grouped into three sections: Embodied Ideals, The Embodiment of "Others," and Embodied Activism and Advocacy. Written in an accessible style for a broad audience of scholars and students, this volume is original within the field of visual media, affect theory, and embodiment due to its emphasis on detailed empirical and, in some cases, ethnographic research within a Canadian context.Table of ContentsTable of Contents for Reclaiming Canadian Bodies: Visual Media and Representation , edited by Lynda Mannik and Karen McGarry Introduction | Karen McGarry and Lynda Mannik Section 1: Embodied Ideals The Media and the Ideal and Fat Body: An Examination of Embodiment and Affect in a Canadian Context | Wendy Mitchinson We've Got Beaver! Book SynopsisThis book offers an important contribution to the recovery and articulation of African-American womanist experience. Ida Wells-Barnett (1862-1931) was an activist, social reformer, and churchwoman. Womanist Justice, Womanist Hope recovers her life and historical context and examines the extent to which her perspective can be a resource for a contemporary womanist Christian social ethic. Beginning with a brief biographical sketch of Wells-Barnett, Emilie Townes examines the religious and social world in which she worked as well as her many speeches and publciations. Townes focuses especially on Wells-Barnett''s participation in the anti-lynching campaigns of the late nineteenth century. Book SynopsisA deeply personal work of photojournalism from one of Britain's most exciting young photographers working todayFor many queer people, exile begins at home. The search for safety and freedom to express themselves drives millions of LGBTQIA+ people across borders. Their stories are full of contrastsbetween isolation and community, freedom and nostalgia. In their stunning compositions, photographer Asafe Ghalib explores the identities of members of the LGBTQIA+ immigrant community in Britain with striking beauty and poise. Brought up in a religious family, Ghalib draws from their own experience, leaving Brazil behind, to depict the rich lives of their subjects who live at the intersections of multiple cultures. Their work, which evokes black-and-white newspaper photographs and classic portraiture that has been present since the dawn of photography, immortalizes the lives of a community that has been misrepresented for decades. The latest in a groundbreaking series of photobooks that highlight queer lives and communities around the world, Shine invites the viewer to enter the world of Britain's many queer communities, and in doing so, to challenge common misconceptions and prejudices about LGBTQIA+ people in Britain. An act of both confrontation and pride, this book is also an exploration of immigration as a human right, and above all, a celebration of the triumphs of a defiant community. Shinewas designed by Emerson, Wajdowicz Studios (EWS).

Cognella, Inc Queer in Aztlán: Chicano Male Recollections of Consciousness and Coming Out
Book SynopsisThe anthology Queer in Aztlán: Chicano Male Recollections of Consciousness and Coming Out gives readers the opportunity to experience deeply personal narratives from queer Chicanos/Mexicanos, and makes it possible for them to understand and sympathize with the stories’ protagonists. It was also a finalist for a 2014 Lambda Award. The book explores issues of queer youth identity, sexuality, masculinity, homophobia, sexism, and violence in Mexican and American culture, presents a complex view of queer Chicanos/Mexicanos, and contests dominant sexual norms. It challenges current scholarship in Chicana/Chicano studies to expand beyond the traditional confines of male sexuality. The seven sections of the book survey the queer experience from a variety of perspectives through reading selections that focus on presence, recollection, embodied self, men of heart, Coatlicue state, and Jotería studies. A unique transnational bibliography gives emphasis to themes on, or by, queer Chicano and Mexicano authors on male sexuality, homoerotic writing, literary criticism, and fiction.

Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Alain Delon: Style, Stardom and Masculinity
Book SynopsisFew European male actors have been as iconic and influential for generations of filmgoers as Alain Delon. Emblematic of a modern, European masculinity, Delon’s appeal spanned cultures and continents. From his breakthrough as the first on-screen Tom Ripley in Purple Noon in 1960, through two legendary performances in Rocco and His Brothers and The Leopard in the early 1960s, to his roles in some of Jean-Pierre Melville’s most celebrated films noirs, Delon came to embody the flair and stylishness of the European thriller as one of France’s most recognizable film stars. This collection examines the star’s career, image and persona. Not only focusing on his spectacular early performances, the book also considers less well documented aspects of Delon’s long career such as his time in Hollywood, his work as director, producer and screenwriter, his musical collaborations, his TV appearances, and his enduring role as a fashion icon in the 21st century. Whether the object of reverence or ridicule, of desire or disdain, Delon remains a unique figure who continues to court controversy and fascination more than five decades after he first achieved international fame.Trade ReviewIn ten essays from a respected pool of academic writers, [this] book teases out what made Delon such a success ... [A]n interesting read. * Media Education Journal *The book increases significantly the available scholarship on Delon ... and offer[s] unusual and stimulating premises ... which in the long run will prove to be useful take-off points for scholars wishing to further engage with the figure of Delon. * Celebrity Studies *Highly engrossing … The use of a wide range of cultural, geographical, and theoretical lenses is not only revolutionary for Delon scholarship, but also has broader implications for star studies and English-language publications on non-Anglo-American stars, further underscoring the importance of this collection’s fascinating exploration of Delon’s style, stardom, and masculinity. * Studies in European Cinema *[This collection] manages to cover the broad range of Delon’s career and persona in ways that are profoundly illuminating. There are excellent studies of his narcissism, his international profile and its relationship to French culture, his impact on fashion culture, his move into production and directing ... and two fascinating chapters on Delon dubbed in his Italian films, and Delon as singer. * French Studies *A bracing and wide-ranging set of essays on a vital French and international star celebrity. As these expert respondents consider Delon's career -- embodying culture, commerce and history -- they offer a richer understanding not only of this particular icon, but also the possibilities for star studies in general. * Tim Palmer, Professor of Film Studies, University of North Carolina Wilmington, USA, and author of Brutal Intimacy: Analyzing Contemporary French Cinema (2011) and Irreversible (2015) *At last, the best-looking, most charismatic French actor of the post-war period gets the sustained attention he deserves. In Alain Delon, Style, Stardom and Masculinity, Nick Rees-Roberts and Darren Waldron have gathered a splendid collection of texts that illuminate the star in his multifarious dimensions: his roles and career choices, performance, looks, voice, fashion sense and sexual attractiveness. Drawing on insights from a range of international scholars, the book also importantly examines and celebrates his presence not just in famous classics such as Rocco and his Brothers, The Leopard and Mr Klein, but also in popular French cinema, especially the thrillers of Henri Verneuil, Jacques Deray and Jean-Pierre Melville, of which he was a pillar for decades. Fans and students alike will relish a book that explains and documents the enduring appeal of one of the great stars of French and world cinema. * Ginette Vincendeau, Professor of Film Studies, King’s College London, UK *Table of ContentsIntroduction: Alain Delon, Then and Now Nick Rees-Roberts, University of Bristol, UK, and Darren Waldron, University of Manchester, UK On the Limits of Narcissism: Alain Delon, Masculinity and the Delusion of Agency Darren Waldron, University of Manchester, UK Delon and Performance: Emploi and the Interaction between Individual, Role and Character Laurent Jullier, Université Paris Sorbonne Nouvelle, France, and Jean-Marc Leveratto, Université de Lorraine, France France’s 'New Don Juan': The Representation of Delon’s Youth Gwénaëlle Le Gras, Université Bordeaux Montaigne, France Dubbing Delon: Voice, Body and National Stardom in Rocco and his Brothers Catherine O’Rawe, University of Bristol, UK Delon/Gabin/Verneuil: Modernity within Tradition Leila Wimmer, London Metropolitan University, UK Alain Delon, International Man of Mystery Mark Gallagher, University of Nottingham, UK The Star’s Script: Delon as Director, Producer and Screenwriter Isabelle Vanderschelden, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK The Singing Actor: Delon on Record Barbara Lebrun, University of Manchester, UK Dressed to Kill: Delon as Style Icon Nick Rees-Roberts, University of Bristol, UK Toujours Delon: The Script of Ageing Sue Harris, Queen Mary University of London, UK

Bloomsbury Publishing Plc The Age of Scientific Sexism: How Evolutionary Psychology Promotes Gender Profiling and Fans the Battle of the Sexes
Book SynopsisWe trust our sciences to operate on a plane of objectivity and fact in a world of subjectivity and cultural ideologies, but should we? In The Age of Scientific Sexism, philosopher Mari Ruti offers a sharp critique of the gender profiling tendencies of evolutionary psychology, untangling the insidious threads of various gender mythologies that have infiltrated—or perhaps even define—this faux-science. Selling stereotypes as scientific facts, evolutionary psychology continually brings retrograde models of sexuality into mainstream culture: it insists that men and women live in two completely different psychological, emotional, and sexual universes, and that they will consequently always be locked in a vicious battle of the sexes. Among these regressive arguments is the assumption that men’s sexuality is urgent and indiscriminate, whereas women are “naturally” reluctant, reticent, and choosy—a concept constructed to justify masculine behavior, such as cheating, that women have historically found painful. On its most basic level, The Age of Scientific Sexism explores our impulse to “explain” romantic behavior through science: in the increasingly egalitarian gender landscape of our society, why are we so eager to embrace the rampant gender profiling that evolutionary psychology promotes? Perhaps these simplistic gender caricatures owe their popularity, at least in part, to our overly pragmatic society pragmatic society, which encourages us to search for easy answers to complex questions.Trade ReviewWith wit and directness, Ruti (philosophy, Univ. of Toronto) deconstructs popular accounts of evolutionary psychology regarding sex and gender. Being an outsider to the field of evolutionary psychology (her field is critical theory), Ruti positions herself as a nonspecialist reader and analyzes understandings of sex and gender as developed in literature targeting that group of nonspecialists. In the first two chapters, she outlines the standard narrative of sexuality and gender, as delivered in popular work on evolutionary psychology, by examining the work of Robert Wright and David Buss. In chapters 3 and 4, she uses the work of Geoffrey Miller and of Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jethá to outline some of the contemporary modifications of the standard narrative. In the last chapter Ruti proposes that current evolutionary arguments promote the mainstream understanding of mating behavior as a pillar for heteronormativity in terms of both reproduction and marriage. The author is insightful and clever in delineating the ideological implications of the logical and empirical limitations of evolutionary psychology, especially as presented to the general public. Interesting and intellectually stimulating, this book is a must read for everyone interested in psychology, gender, and sexuality studies. Summing Up: Essential. Upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, researchers, faculty, and professionals. -- I. I. Katzarska-Miller, Transylvania University, USA * CHOICE *[Evolutionary Psychology] advocates and researchers claim that the ways in which (straight) men and women relate, pair off, mate, and pass on their genes have their roots in ahistorical, static traits supposedly shared with cavemen and cavewomen … As Ruti explains, when the “strength” of certain traits also happens to line up with gender stereotypes that would have been right at home in the 1950s, things seem a little too pat, often to the point of this “science” fitting neatly into status-quo, retrograde ideas about how men and women act when it comes to love and sex … reading Ruti’s takedown of evo psych is akin to listening to the world’s most delightful gender-studies tour guide … The Age of Scientific Sexism manages to be informative, entertaining, and persuasive in its exploration of a “science” that is anything but. -- Anna Hamilton * Bitch Media *The Age of Scientific Sexism tracks the insidious migration of social Darwinism from a largely discredited academic sub-discipline to a mass-marketed area of pop psychology. Passionate and personal in tone, the book exposes the antiquated gender scripts and lazy science that flourish in the field of evolutionary psychology—and why it’s important to resist its patriarchal seductions. * Janice Haaken, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Portland State University, USA *The Age of Scientific Sexism sneaks up on you: it starts with an important critique of evolutionary psychology—one that every Introductory Psychology student should read—and subtly opens to a robust queering of straight sex and an unabashed treatise on the truth of humanity’s wide-spectrum sexuality. Mari Ruti’s reflections unmask the empirical and logical shortcomings of evolutionary psychology, particularly in their popularized guise, showing how we have instantiated shame yet again in current discourses of sex. This is a feminist issue, a psychological issue, but also one concerned with an ethics of love, desire, and passion, with which every person lives with immediately and concretely. This book makes you think. I thank Mari Ruti for it. * Kareen R. Malone, Professor of Psychology, University of West Georgia, USA, and member of the Après Coup Psychoanalytic Association, New York, USA *A bold, fresh take on gender with a dagger straight to the heart of the societal scripts that promise happiness but too often undermine it. This book is a brilliant read that will leave you feeling smarter and more emboldened to lead your best and most passionate life. * Bella DePaulo, author of Singled Out: How Singles Are Stereotyped, Stigmatized, and Ignored, and Still Live Happily Ever After and Project Scientist in Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA *Evolutionary psychology has offered a way of thinking about gender differences in sex, desire, and romance that has been tremendously influential. The standard narrative has infiltrated some of the most popular self-help books (such as John Gray’s Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus) and has been perpetrated so relentlessly that it has become part of the conventional wisdom of our time. Mari Ruti, a professor of critical theory at the University of Toronto, isn’t buying it. ... She blows giant holes in some of the most influential studies academics cite in support of the standard narrative. ... She shows readers what is exaggerated in the standard narrative and what is marginalized or ignored. ... In a bravura analysis, Ruti shows how the stereotyping and stigmatizing of single people (including single parents) is part of the package of evolutionary psychology and its standard narrative. So is the glorifying of traditional marriage. ... The Age of Scientific Sexism is a smart, compelling, thoughtful read. -- Bella DePaulo * PsychCentral *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Bold Type Books Mi Hermana: Cómo La Transición de Una Hermana Nos
Book SynopsisA powerful memoir by two sisters about transitioning, family, and the path to self-realization.When Orange Is the New Black and Diary of a Future President star Selenis Leyva was young, her hardworking parents brought a new foster child into their warm, loving family in the Bronx. Selenis was immediately smitten; she doted on the baby, who in turn looked up to Selenis and followed her everywhere. The little boy became part of the family. But later, the siblings realized that the child was struggling with their identity. As Marizol transitioned and fought to define herself, Selenis and the family wanted to help, but didn''t always have the language to describe what Marizol was going through or the knowledge to help her thrive. In My Sister, Selenis and Marizol narrate, in alternating chapters, their shared journey, challenges, and triumphs. They write honestly about the issues of violence, abuse, and discrimination that transgender people and women of color--and especially trans women of color--experience daily. And they are open about the messiness and confusion of fully realizing oneself and being properly affirmed by others, even those who love you.Profoundly moving and instructive, My Sister offers insight into the lives of two siblings learning to be their authentic selves. Ultimately, theirs is a story of hope, one that will resonate with and affirm those in the process of transitioning, watching a loved one transition, and anyone taking control of their gender or sexual identities.

Lexington Books Rewriting Resistance to Social Justice Pedagogies
Book SynopsisResistance to feminist, queer, and antiracist pedagogies can take many forms in the composition class: silence during class discussion; tepid, bland writing that fails to engage with course content; refusal to engage with feminist and queer ideas; open and direct challenges to professors' authority. Rewriting Resistance to Social Justice Pedagogies argues that composition studies has not adequately addressed the complex and deeply local contexts and causes of resistance. Therefore, the author argues that resistance research must first understand the origins and purpose for a student's resistance, interrogating the language used to name and describe students who resist. Composition instructors must then give students the tools to uncover and investigate their reasons for resistance themselves, challenging students to continually interrogate their resistances. This book utilizes feminist composition pedagogies, masculinity studies, and queer pedagogies to engage student resistance in the writing classroom.

Through various forms of feminist media mobilizations, from hashtag feminism and platform activism to personal blogs and meme accounts, these chapters explore how digital feminists use the long-standing tactics of storytelling to counter the dominant narratives of white supremacy, colonialism, heteropatriarchy, and the intersecting oppressions that accompany such structures, both online and offline. By sharing stories of intersectional feminist assembly for collective justice, this book contributes to larger conversations about establishing alternative ways of seeing and being in the world, inviting others to assemble with us.

Book SynopsisOften associated with the rural', the exotic' or the folkloric', Amazigh women's ancestral art of weaving has not received much attention in Amazigh Studies. Drawing on primary sources, manuscripts, and printed texts, in libraries and archives, this book sheds new light on Amazigh women's weaving practices, arguing that it was the ancestral rug designs that inspired the Amazigh alphabet Tifinagh. In doing so, the author reveals the active role women played in the process of codifying the Amazigh language. This book is of interest to scholars in Amazigh studies, women's history, anthropology, and linguistics.

Lexington Books Rhetoric and Resilience
Book SynopsisRhetoric and Resilience explores discourse produced about and by the women involved in the World War II era Women Airforce Service Pilots program. Aviators such as Jacqueline Cochran and Nancy Harkness Love provided the initial rhetorical boost to successfully launch the program, while countless other pilots such as Cornelia Fort and Barbara Poole wrote to define the significance of the work the WASP were doing. Despite a formidable amount of concrete evidence in her favor, Cochran was unsuccessful in having WASP militarized. After the program''s disbandment in 1944, the women of WASP settled back into civilian life but maintained strong rhetorical bonds which served them greatly in the 1970s campaign for veteran status. Using the lenses of both feminist rhetorical theory and classical rhetoric, this book seeks to recover these rhetorics. The chapters illustrate how the women employed a spectrum of strategies carefully designed to provide a fitting response to those both supportive of and hostile to their labor in the arena of military aviation.

Lexington Books Grief Madness and Crises of Masculinity in
Book SynopsisThis book analyzes a cycle of early twenty-first century mind-game films and TV series in which male protagonists retreat into fantasies, dreams, or hallucinations as a means of coping with grief and guilt following the death of a loved one. Discussing films like Memento, Inception, and Shutter Island and the TV series Mr. Robot, among others, Rosalind Sibielski highlights the way in which the construction of alternate realities allows the protagonists to work through bereavement and past trauma. The author also argues that, as part of this process, the protagonists not only find themselves questioning their memories and what they believe to be true about their identities, but they are also forced to reevaluate who they are as men and the way that they define their manhood. Finally, this book examines these stories of intersecting crises of reality and crises of masculinity within the context of millennial culture wars in the U.S. over the way that manhood is, can be, or should be enacted.

Lexington Books Contemporary Feminist Art by Women in North
Book SynopsisContemporary Feminist Art by Women in North Africa: Body Talks dissects the diverse perceptions of the body and how it becomes symbolically charged in the artwork of six contemporary Maghrebi female artists: Majida Khattari, Lalla Essaydi, Zoulikha Bouabdellah, Déborah Benzaquen, Fatima Mazmouz and Zaïnab Fasiki. With a focus on the French, Maghrebi, and North American market and examining artistic mediums ranging from painting and photography to videos and installations, Ramona Mielusel highlights how the body functions as both subject and object of aesthetic discourse. The author denotes these artistic works as the intersection of the intimate and the impersonal, of the individual perception and the communitarian and societal view, without promoting a fixed notion of the body in a specific spatiality and temporality. This book explores the work of female Maghrebi artists and their intentional framing of the body's duality between the symbolic and the real, between cultural interpretation of the body in literature and the actual perception of the body.
