Book SynopsisDrug-induced mucosal damage is of immense importance in gastroenterology. It is imperative that clinicians understand how these lesions come about, what the sometimes devastating consequences are and what can be done to prevent or to treat such calamities. Drug-induced damage is bound to increase in the future as the population ages and polypharmacy becomes the rule instead of the exception. Hopes for improvement were shattered when the long term consequences of COX-2 inhibition became available. Is the COX-1/COX-2 concept truly obsolete? Several issues are discussed by European experts in the second part of the book. What the clinician should know about non acid, weakly acid or biliary reflux is discussed in depth. Novel developments of gastrointestinal neuropathies and motor disorders concentrate on IBS, pseudo-obstruction and faecal incontinence. Our surgical colleagues will certainly be interested in novel minimally invasive procedures. Finally all will learn from a critical analysis of novel diagnostic imaging modalities.

  • Foregut: Function -- Dysfunction

John Libbey Eurotext Foregut: Function -- Dysfunction

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisKnowledge concerning oesophageal pathophysiology has until recently lagged far behind that of the pathophysiology of other portions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract for reasons that still remain unclear. Yet, it is the fact that, at least until the last few decades, interest in the oesophagus was primarily based on pathologic anatomy. Even today, much remains to be learnt on the pathophysiology of oesophageal disease. The recent development of methods of studying both morphology and function of the oesophagus has resulted in a better understanding of normal and abnormal oesophageal patterns with a corresponding improvement in treatment, which is now physiologically, rather than anatomically based. As customary, the World OESO Congresses are planned to provide each time a thorough analysis of a specific topic in oesophageal disease. The 8th World Congress of OESO was devoted to the Foregut: Function and Dysfunction to emphasise the complex interaction between the oesophagus and the other portions of the upper GI tract, either in maintaining physiological function or in triggering oesophageal disease. The choice is a timely one because recent investigations have allowed new insights into the pathophysiology of these complex interactions to be gained. It is indeed becoming clear that there are intriguing pathophysiological abnormalities that account for upper GI symptoms and that more targeted therapy is needed to address the unmet clinical needs. Within this framework, specific sessions were devoted to disorders of secretion, of motility as well as of nutrition with a special emphasis on recent advances. Unlike some of the other publications, this volume does not merely represent the proceedings of an International Congress. With its now established and successful format, it collects the answers to 130 key questions, offered by 110 basic scientists and clinicians the world over, all of whom have personally contributed to the topic, in order to provide a glimpse of what may lie ahead. The easy-to-read format will allow the practising and busy physician to keep up efficiently with advances in diagnosis and therapy in this rapidly evolving field.

With the human body, so many issues can be improved upon, or cured, by balancing the microbiome. But the microbiome—a community of bacteria, viruses, and yeasts that dwell in the body—has long been something that the average person can find baffling—and maybe a little bit gross.By offering simple and straightforward answers to questions like what one should be eating, what probiotics are, which vitamins and medicines really work, Dr. Raj demystifies the gut. Book SynopsisWe are a culture increasingly obsessed with food and health, and with the possible relationship between the two. Yet everywhere we look we see conflicting opinions and advice about the role of food in health. We are inundated by books, T.V. specials, magazine and newspaper articles - so much so that people have begun to ignore today''s recommendations of health experts, knowing that today''s fad will be gone tomorrow. In Good Food for Bad Stomachs, Dr, Henry Janowitz shares this healthy skepticism about some of these news stories and sets out to make sense of the many research reports and claims, to sort out fact from opinion, and to suggest a sensible diet for those of us who have gastorintestinal complaints and for those of us who do not. He asks two central questions which shape the content and spirit of the book: Is there an ideal diet and is there a consensus on what the ideal diet might contain? And most important to his patients, what do we know about the role of our eating habits in preventing, causing, and treating the many disorders which plague our gastrointestinal tract and its associated digestive glands--the liver, gall bladder, and pancreas? Dr. Janowitz does believe we are what we eat, and the good news is that we can prevent many of our modern diseases by adhering to simple guidelines that are built on solid evidence and the insights of a master clinician who has spent a lifetime listening, treating, and healing patients.Trade ReviewGood Food for Bad Stomachs, authored by an expert in the study of digestive disorders for more than one-half century, is the best book on the subject yet written and is highly recommended for everyone with even a casual interest in food and health."--Joseph B. Close to 100 million Americans suffer from chronic-and sometimes very serious- gastrointestinal conditions. Prominent gastroenterologist Dr. Wesley Jones has found that virtually all digestive problems have one single underlying cause-constipation. Our modern diets and stressful lifestyles can make poor digestion such a common experience that sometimes people don't even recognize it as a problem. Here, Dr. Jones provides a proven program that has already helped thousands relieve and prevent constipation-related gastrointestinal problems for life. No one wants to talk about constipation, but millions suffer from it. Take as evidence the ubiquitous ads for Dannon's billion-dollar brand, Activia, which features Jamie Lee Curtis talking about occasional irregularity. Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints in the United State

  • Ener-Chi.com The Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this greatly expanded edition of his international bestseller, Andreas Moritz reveals the most common but rarely recognized cause of illness - gallstones congesting the bile ducts in the liver. Besides leading to gallbladder diseases and gallstone attacks in at least 20 million Americans each year, in many cases, liver bile duct congestion sets the stage for even more serious, seemingly unrelated, conditions, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Most adults living in the industrialized world, and especially those suffering a chronic illness, such as irritable bowel syndrome, heart disease, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, cancer, or diabetes, have in fact hundreds if not thousands of gallstones (mainly clumps of hardened bile that escape detection for they are invisible to x-rays, ultrasound, and CT scans) blocking the bile ducts of their liver. This book provides a thorough understanding of the liver and its complex functions, what causes gallstones in the liver and gallbladder, and why these stones can be held responsible for the most common diseases so prevalent in the world today. It provides the reader with the knowledge needed to recognize these stones and gives the necessary, do-it-yourself instructions to painlessly remove them in the comfort of one''s home. Packed with images, the book also gives practical guidelines on how to prevent new gallstones in both the liver and gallbladder. The liver and gallbladder flush (cleanse) has led to extraordinary improvements in health and wellness among millions of people who have already given themselves the precious gift of a strong, clean, revitalized liver. Besides providing the practical procedures to cleanse the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, and intestines, Moritz explains in great detail the origin of all types of common diseases and how to prevent or reverse them naturally. The book is packed with precious, time-tested approaches designed to return the body to a permanent state of balance and vitality; it includes a complete program of healthcare, which is primarily based on the ancient medical system of Ayurveda and the vast amount of experience Andreas Moritz has gained in the field of health restoration during the past 30 years. Moritz is the author of 15 groundbreaking books on natural health and a leading, internationally recognized, authority in the field of integrative medicine.
