It is not a typical design history text—there are no large color images of landmark chairs or textiles and no evolutionary account of historically significant designers. Instead, Murphy (anthropology, UC Irvine) draws out how ordinary objects within the built environment embody Sweden's social democratic ideology: that is, the way Swedes use design to structure the everyday world they live and move about in. * CHOICE *Swedish Design: An Ethnography will be of interest to scholars and graduate students in anthropology, sociology, design studies, and the history of design as well as scholars engaged in design research. Murphy provides the reader with an approach to carrying out anthropology of design, outlining thematic areas for consideration; insodoing, heoffers an invaluable resource for researchers and students with interests in design and its wider social political relations, interaction analysis, and anthropological approaches to understanding the relation between the political, design processes and practices. * H-Net *Keith M. Rizzoli International Publications Shakers From Mount Lebanon to the World
Book SynopsisAn important book on Shaker art and life, offering a fresh look at a style that has endured through centuries and continues to inspire designers and homeowners. This book presents the elegantly austere and simply styled objects of the Shakers in the context of their faith and community at Mount Lebanon, N.Y., the spiritual and administrative center of the Shaker world. Outstanding examples of furniture, textiles, tools, and other objects-drawn primarily from the collection of Shaker Museum Mount Lebanon-bring the fascinating world of the Shakers to life. The book also explores the equally compelling material culture of Sabbathday Lake in New Gloucester, Maine, the last active Shaker community, and how this group of Shakers continued to thrive while other Shaker communities elsewhere gradually disappeared. Accompanying a major exhibition organized by the Farnsworth Art Museum, this book presents a new and authentic perspective on the Shaker community. Specially commissionTrade Review"The fascinating story of the Shakers, and of their extraordinary furniture, is now told in The Shakers: From Mount Lebanon to the World. This book expands our knowledge by documenting other types of practical furniture, tools and even Shaker clothing...this beautiful and enthralling book opens a window onto the world of the Shakers..." -Wall Street Journal"...this enlightening, visually arresting...uplifting exhibition highlights American ingenuity, resilience and fearlessness; its can-do spirit and individualism. The show is a rich overview of the Shaker community; but it celebrates individual artists, expressing themselves through a plain-spoken poetry that is uniquely American." -Review of Exhibition by the Wall Street Journal"With simple objects, simple words, Farnsworth tells complex Shaker story...it is a great exhibition. It is beautifully installed and fascinating. The objects are important and compelling. The language behind the installation is the level-headed and eminently commonsensical voice of the Believers." -Review of Exhibition by the Portland Press Herald"...the show will present a comprehensive look at the religious, social and economic foundations of Shaker life, seen through Shaker-made objects…accompanied by a richly illustrated book…” –The Republican Journal

Rizzoli International Publications Designpop
Book SynopsisDesignPOP is a survey of trends in contemporary furniture and products that reveals how design is not only changing with the times—it is inventing the future. The game-changing projects that compose DesignPOP push the boundaries of our expectations and show us new ideas, new possibilities, and ultimately new products that enrich our lives. The bar has been permanently raised as we enter the next century, and the proliferation of innovative designs continues. New materials and processes are being invented, convention and traditions are constantly being challenged, and sustainability and social responsibility are influencing new directions. Even the definition of designer is changing as the lines between disciplines begin to blur, with new technology from companies like Apple and Dyson radically altering both form and function. Historic boundaries disappear, designers innovate their way through roadblocks, and the twenty-first century is experiencing a design renaissance unparallelTrade Review“The bright, cheery tome surveys the most innovative pieces of technology and product design since 2000, objects that straddle the line between furnishing and sculpture, device and art installation. A chair of hammered metal by Marijn van der Poll, for example, resembles the imploded steel sculptures of Ewerdt Hilgemann. And, by experimenting with resin-dyed vibrant hues, Patrick Norguet created a chair that is equal parts household item and Pop Art.” –Architectural Digest“Lively descriptions-not to mention its eye-popping pink cover - keep the tome accessible to even the most uninitiated readers interested in contemporary design." –Surface Magazine “I was very excited to find out that architect and designer Lisa Roberts, is releasing a new book called DesignPOP. Lisa has amassed an incredible collection of modern design items, which she calls “Antiques of the Future”…Her new book focuses on game-changing design and products that pioneer. From materials to technology to production methods, Lisa explores some of the pieces we’re already beginning to see as design classics.” –Design-Milk.com"DesignPOP is a curated selection of game-changing product design in the 21st century highlighting ideas, production processes, materials and more that have changed the way we think about design. The book features eighty-two products that push the boundaries of any expectations. Whether they pioneer the use of a new material and/or production process, take sustainability to the next level of design, or innovate in technology and functionality-each product is important in its own right. DesignPOP acts as a bridge between the world of design and the general public, and encourages the reader to explore the design world around them and the products within that world.” –Dexigner.com “Wry Humor, Good Design: designPOP. The cover says it all. There’s a wry sense of humor at work here, and more of that to come inside. And so she has in the new book, using her [Roberts] own wit and insight to explain why a particular design is good and why we should pay attention to it…the book intends to opens up the conversation between art, design and craft.” –Architects + Artisans “DesignPOP is a survey of trends in contemporary furniture and products that reveals how design is not only changing with the times, it is inventing the future. The game changing projects that compose DesignPOP push the boundaries of human expectations and show new ideas, new possibilities and ultimately new products that enrich people’s lives. The book presents work from stars in the field…” –Editor at Large"With the digital universe expanding, there are ample platforms for users to judge and consume goods, determining their place in material culture. DesignPOP places itself in that trajectory as this boldly designed volume attempts the Sisyphean task of historicizing objects in a valuable way." –Identity Dubai

Book SynopsisRattan furnishings evoke the glamour and laid back elegance of exotic beach houses as well as the informal beauty of plant filled garden rooms and sun dappled verandas.Long fascinated with rattan's versatility, designer Lulu Lytle examines the enduring appeal of this sustainable tropical palm in RATTAN: A WORLD OF ELEGANCE AND CHARM. The first book in decades to examine the history and craftsmanship of rattan furniture, this insightful tome showcases rattan's appeal through archival images of beautiful interiors including Madeleine Castaing's winter garden in Paris, Michael Taylor's own Californian beach house, the Titanic's Café Parisian and the Billy Baldwin designed Mr. Kennedy's beauty salon in New York City. Rattan's many personalities are explored through its inclusion in settings as diverse as Impressionist paintings, flamboyant nightclubs and pared down contemporary drawing rooms.A reflection of its inherent beauty and longevity, antique rattaTrade Review"Threadbare stools found in Egyptian tombs and the Titanic’s deck chairs are among the precedents for woven plant-fiber products made by the workshop Soane Britain, as the company’s co-founder, Lulu Lytle, explains in “Rattan: A World of Elegance and Charm” (Rizzoli, $65, 224 pp.)...The book illustrates luminaries relaxing on curlicued or streamlined rattan, including Tsar Nicholas II, Elsie de Wolfe, David Hockney and Elizabeth Taylor. Ms. Lytle also details how craftspeople steam and ply the material. I for one could imagine spending a therapeutic day helping out at the Soane Britain workshop. Ms. Lytle reports that rattan sprouts surface hairs that need to be laboriously singed away, and 'when it is cropped it smells like mown hay.'"—The New York Times"Love the relaxed look of rattan furniture? This book, by the founder of beloved British brand Soane, is for you. Lulu Lytle takes readers on a magical journey through the versatile material, touching on spaces from French gardens to New York City townhouses—and even the chic café on the fated Titanic. best friend gifts, pinky promise necklace and limited edition candle." — HOUSE BEAUTIFUL “I have looked at thousands, and I mean thousands, of photographs of rattan in interiors, and I cannot find a single one where people are looking miserable,” says the author Lulu Lytle in an interview about her fascinating book on rattan, a long-beloved furniture material. “Rattan humanizes even the grandest setting—it’s like the furniture is saying, sit back and have a drink.” —GARDEN & GUN "In making her case for rattan’s enduring appeal, author and Soane Britain cofounder Lulu Lytle references furniture by Jean-Michel Frank, Arne Jacobsen, Renzo Mongiardino, as well as archival images of interiors designed by Madeleine Castaing, Billy Baldwin, and other industry legends as convincing evidential support." —ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST.COM

Book SynopsisSara Kristoffersson is guest professor of Design History and Theory at Konstfack National University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm, Sweden. She has published a number of articles on various aspects of design, fashion, art and architecture and lectures widely on these topics at museums and universities, including École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, Paris, France; Parsons School of Design, New York, USA; the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm, Sweden.Trade ReviewEveryone should read [this]. * Swedish Design Research Journal *Sara Kristoffersson's monograph is a good example of emerging design research ... A superb analysis of the tenets and designs of the 1920s Bauhaus school as a utopia that never reached the stage of mass production, but which Ikea then took onboard after WWII. * ark: Finnish Architectural Review *An informative and thoughtful little book. * Scandinavian Studies *[Kristoffersson] deftly deals, in six information-packed chapters, with the background and reasons behind the phenomenal global success of IKEA ... A fascinating read. * TSS Reviews blog *Design by IKEA is the fist book to scrutinize the Swedish giant’s massive impact on contemporary design culture. Unpicking how the public image of IKEA has come to depend as much on the international image of Sweden as the other way around, Sara Kristoffersson critically assesses the company’s creative use of storytelling and stereotypes. -- Kjetil Fallan, University of Oslo, NorwayFinally, a critical and nuanced analysis of the world-dominating brand IKEA. Kristoffersson’s sharply honed prose reveals how the corporation has controversially come to define a nation, and how the inescapable ubiquity of its objects has transformed consumption on a global scale. Accessible and compelling, the book offers invaluable insight into the blurring of corporate, political and brand worlds in the 21st century. -- Alison J. Clarke University of Applied Arts Vienna, AustriaSara Kristoffersson manages to provide what Sweden and management scholars have been longing for: a cultural theorist's account of how a small company in the middle of Sweden has grown amazingly successful. Artmonsky Arts Heals Posters Advertising Modernism
Book Synopsis A survey by Nicklaus Pevsner in the 1930s estimated that some 80-90% of manufactured goods in England were shoddy and poorly designed. When it came to furniture only a handful of manufacturers would have escaped such condemnation. Prime among these was Heals of Tottenham Court Road - manufacturer, retailer, and, with its top floor Mansard Gallery, the Mecca for Home Counties cognoscenti of ''modernism''. Most furniture manufacturers advertised their wares in the press but Heal''s was a rare exception in the industry in its use of posters. Heal''s posters not only relay the saga of a pioneering enterprise but provide a shorthand history of what was happening in the design and retailing of furniture and furnishings in Britain in the 20th century.

Book SynopsisCooke offers a fresh and appealing cross-disciplinary study of the furnituremakers, social structure, household possessions, and surviving pieces of furniture of two neighboring New England communities. Winner of the Decorative Arts Society, Inc.'s Charles F. Montgomery PrizeOriginally published in 1996. In Making Furniture in Preindustrial America Edward S. Cooke Jr. offers a fresh and appealing cross-disciplinary study of the furnituremakers, social structure, household possessions, and surviving pieces of furniture of two neighboring New England communities. Drawing on both documentary and artifactual sources, Cooke explores the interplay among producer, process, and style in demonstrating why and how the social economies of these two seemingly similar towns differed significantly during the late colonial and early national periods. Throughout the latter half of the eighteenth century, Cooke explains, the yeoman town of Newtown relied on native joiners whose work satisfied the expTrade ReviewEdward S. Gibbs Smith Southern Sensibility
Book Synopsis The homes featured in Southern Sensibility embody the graciousness of Southern living while offering a balance between the time-honored past and everyday modern living. There is a unique way of living in the South, a more gracious style with a modern twist. Sophisticated casual interiors with pops of color have always been Edith-Anne?s design aesthetic, as well as a respect for heritage and history. Growing up as a child in the South, Edith-Anne?s family home was filled with inherited furnishings mixed with modern touches of chinoiserie and unexpected moments, like a white leather bench with emerald-green piping. Those surroundings sparked her love of home and decor. The homes featured in Southern Sensibility are all respectful of family, history, and fashion, but are meant to offer a balance between family time, cherished moments, and everyday modern life. A home should be elegant, but without the fuss of formality. It should welcome guests and family with open arms, where nothing is too precious, but everything is thoughtfully beautiful. As Edith-Anne?s witty mother says, ?Use your sterling every day, dear, because if you don?t, the second wife will!?

Rowman & Littlefield American Furniture
Book SynopsisDrawing on the latest scholarship, this comprehensive, lavishly illustrated survey tells the story of the evolution of American furniture from the 17th century to the present. Not viewed in isolation, furniture is placed in its broader cultural, historic, and aesthetic context. The focus is not only on the urban masterpieces of 18th century William and Mary, Queen Anne, Chippendale, and Federal styles but also on the work of numerous rural cabinetmakers. Special chapters explore Windsor chairs, Shaker, and Pennsylvania German furniture which do not follow the mainstream style progression. Picturesque and anti-classical explain Victorian furniture including Rococo, Renaissance, and Eastlake. Mission and Arts and Crafts furniture introduce the 20th century. Another chapter identifies the eclectic revivals such as Early American that dominated the mass market throughout much of the 20th century. After World War II American designers created many of the Mid-Century Modern icons that are muTrade ReviewThis is a great improvement over earlier editions of Fitzgerald’s surveys—Four Centuries of American Furniture (1995) and Three Centuries of American Furniture (CH, Jun'82). Fitzgerald adds material on the 20th and 21st centuries and a final chapter on connoisseurship. He takes a chronological approach, moving from the early l7th century to the present with great detail. All the well-known pieces are here, plus many that will be less familiar. Fitzgerald considers both the exceptional and the ordinary, both high styles and country-rural forms. He explores styles, construction, materials, regional characteristics, forms and types, upholstery and fabrics, design origins, use and taste, trade, and technological innovations. Each section has comparisons with architecture; chapters have notes; and the bibliography of books, catalogues, theses, and articles is annotated. The visuals are extensive—some 800 in black and white and 48 in color. . . Lengthy explanatory captions are helpful. New terminology is used throughout except for style names (e.g., “Chippendale”), which are kept for familiarity. An outstanding achievement in American cultural studies with up-to-date research, collection of sources, and detailed scholarship, this indispensable reference is an important addition to the literature on American art and culture. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readers. * CHOICE *This lavishly illustrated volume contains over eight hundred photographs, of which forty-eight are in color. This book combines and expands information from the author's previous publications Three Centuries of American Furniture and Four Centuries of American Furniture with additional content into the twenty-first century. As a result, it is probably the most extensive and comprehensive volume on American furniture from the seventeenth century up to the present. Twenty-one chapters provide in-depth analysis of various types and histories of American furniture such as Queen Anne, Federal, American Empire, Shaker, Gothic, Rococo, Eastlake, Mission, Revival, Post-Modern, and Avant-garde, to name but a few. Each chapter has numerous black-and-white photographs referred to in the content. The color photographs feature a number of re-created and historical rooms from around the United States, in order to show how Americans decorated rooms in various time periods, from rich mansions to humble rural dwellings. A wonderful addition to any public or academic library's holdings. * American Reference Books Annual *Both serious readers and casual visitors to the book...will unearth a cache of diamonds in Fitzgerald's history.... In addition to his lavish use of photographs and their accompanying commentary, Fitzgerald, a renowned expert on furniture, a teacher, and a curator, deserves our applause for the wealth of information he has packed into these pages and the straight-up style with which he delivers this gift.. * Smoky Mountain News *Anyone with an interest in furniture, past or present, owes a debt to Oscar Fitzgerald for this magnificent and comprehensive survey. He has put the entire story of American furniture between two covers for the first time, and has done so with commendable intelligence. Drawing from a wealth of recent scholarship, and ranging across an incredible span - urban and rural, north south east and west, expensive and everyday - this book immediately takes its place as an indispensable reference work, not to mention a most enjoyable read. -- Glenn Adamson, Senior Scholar, Yale Center for British ArtIn American Furniture: 1650 to the Present Oscar Fitzgerald offers a long-needed, sweeping look at the history of American furniture. Deftly balancing high style and vernacular examples, 17th century and contemporary work, and small shop and factory production, Fitzgerald provides a comprehensive examination of the context, materials, styles, and forms of American furniture in a single volume. This volume will immediately prove invaluable to collectors and students alike, dispensing with the chronological or regional subdivisions that characterize the field and encouraging readers to embrace the full measure of American furniture. -- Edward S. Book SynopsisFurniture is an artifact so what can it tell us about culture? What social, religious, political and economic factors have shaped its form and functions? How does furniture demonstrate the transformations in private and public life across time and cultures? In a work that spans 4,500 years, 70 experts chart across six volumes the changing cultural framework within which furniture was designed, produced, and used in Western Europe. Individual volume editors ensure the cohesion of the whole and, to make it as easy as possible to use, chapter titles are identical across each of the volumes. This gives the choice of reading about a specific period in one of the volumes, or following a theme across history by reading the relevant chapter in each of the six.The six volumes cover: 1 - Antiquity (2500 BCE - 500 CE); 2 - Middle Ages and Renaissance (500 - 1500); 3 - Age of Exploration (1500 - 1700); 4 - Age of Enlightenment (1700 - 1800); 5 - Age of Empire and Indus
