Furniture design Books
August Editions Joris Laarman: Lab
Book SynopsisFurniture generated by smart algorithms, the first fully functional 3-D printed steel bridge, and a 3-D printable chair that can be downloaded from the Internet—these are but a few examples of the ingenious oeuvre of Dutch designer and inventor Joris Laarman (born 1979), who works at the intersection of design, art and engineering. Part of the recent high-profile Dutch design movement, Laarman quickly set himself apart from his peers with the Heat Wave Radiator, which erases the lines between the functional and the decorative. Quickly embracing digital technologies and applying them to the traditional field of design, Laarman has produced instant icons such as the Bone Chair designs, which harnesses a computer algorithm to mimic bone growth for the form of the designs. He has also bridged the distance between digital technology and craftsmanship with his Makerchair, downloadable as an open-source design. Abolishing the distinctions between natural and manmade, Laarman’s work opens a new avenue for the future of design. In parallel with the touring exhibition, this handsome hardcover catalog with over 300 color illustrations goes far beyond the exhibition, revealing Laarman’s process, his studio and numerous designs in office, home and workshop settings. Flowing throughout the book are informative project descriptions, a statement from the LAB and assorted essays. The American museum tour includes the Cooper Hewitt, NY (2017), the High Museum, Atlanta, and MFA Houston (2017–18).

August Editions Robert Wilson: Chairs
Book SynopsisThis unprecedented angle on the oeuvre of Robert Wilson reveals the importance of chair design for his cross-medium art For American experimental theater stage director and playwright Robert Wilson (born 1941), theater is a totality of visual, textual and performative mediums. Wilson has incorporated furniture designs into his scenography since his earliest productions in the 1960s. "In almost all of my plays, there is a chair specially designed," he said. "Often, the chairs are much like an actor." Wilson’s chairs, with their frequently referential names (the Kafka Chair, Queen Victoria Chairs, the Mondrian Chair), assume expanded significance as the surviving artifacts of each performance. The works in this publication range from 1969 to 2011, from the stainless steel mesh Parzival Sofa (1987) to the painted wood Clementine Hunter Rocker (2011). Wilson’s practice as a designer is illuminated by his practice as a collector, with pieces in materials ranging from wood, bronze and steel to taxidermied legs, tempered glass and neon. This publication includes several works never previously exhibited.

Editions Norma Andre Dubreuil
Book SynopsisSvelte and seductive, the Spine chair, shown on the cover of this book, is one of the most renowned objects in contemporary design. Its creator, Andre Dubreuil, after initially pursuing a career of antique dealer and a painter-decorator, became one of the leading figures of new English design in the mid-1980s, with Mark Brazier-Jones and Tom Dixon. After first working his magic on the rebar, Dubreuil tackled traditional forms, breathing new life into them. This return to citation, ornament, and to "craftsmanship" was carried out without qualms. For him, invention is what counts above all. The history of styles has never caught hold of him because he does not know where his craft will lead tomorrow. It is a craft which, through random experimentation, has been the catalyst for 400 enigmatic furniture objects from 1985 to today: chairs, chests of drawers, mirrors, cabinets, clocks, lanterns, etc. in which dreams, invention and mystery prevail over function.

Editions Norma Marc Held: 50 Years of Design
Book SynopsisFrom the white plastic bed for the Prisunic catalogue (1966) to the Culbuto armchair issued by Knoll, and from the Lip watch to the private apartments of the Elysee Palace, Paris, (1983), the furniture and objects conceived by Marc Held have been emblematic of the renewal of French design, following the line of Scandinavians such as Alvar Aalto and Arne Jacobsen...With his gallery L'Echoppe on the rue de Seine, Paris, and then with his agency, the designer and architect Marc Held also took part in major projects for IBM and Renault. This book traces fifty years of design, whose success with the public at large has contributed to a great liberation in our style of life. The generosity of his vision has remained faithful to the humanist values that guided his childhood in Bagnolet, where he was born in 1932. Having settled in Greece, on the island of Skopelos, over twenty years ago, Marc Held still continues to build houses and furnish them with his creations, working closely with Greek craftsmen.

Editions Norma Olivier Gagnere
Book SynopsisOlivier Gagnère appeared on the French design scene in the 1980s. Through his contact with the Memphis group of Ettore Sottsass in Milan, he developed his spirit of fantasy, great formal liberty, all with a touch of humour. In Japan, on the island of Kyushu, he immersed himself in the ancestral craftsmanship of the porcelain makers in the studios of Arita. He designed his earliest pieces of furniture for Artelano and Pierre Staudenmeyer's Galerie Néotù. He went on to collaborate with the Galerie Maeght to create works in Murano glass and with the Galerie Edition Limitée for works in earthenware. In 1994, his designs for the interior of the café Marly, in the Louvre, brought him great renown and have led to many collaborations with crystal works Saint-Louis, porcelain manufacturer Bernardaud, En attendant les Barbares... With Olivier Gagnère's artful mastery of every material, he is just as at ease working with porcelain as with iron, crystal, wood, leather or bronze. He blends simple and timeless forms with carefully sized volumes, in a range of bright contrasting colours. Steeped in the most classical traditions, he marks every one of his creations with a gesture, a demeanor that is a signature of his times. Text in English and French.

Birkhauser by: EOOS: Design zwischen Archaik und Hightech /
Book SynopsisIn Ovid's Metamorphoses, Eoos is one of the chariot draft horses of the sun god Helios; the design studio EOOS founded in Vienna 20 years ago is also a driving force, in the today's globalized world of design. This is verified by more than 130 design awards and an impressive number of patents. EOOS pursues a consistent reduced design language, alternating between archaic and high-tech and entirely free from stylistic affectations. This first and long overdue monograph on EOOS is divided into three parts, and is a source of inspiration, analysis, and documentation. Part one is based on a series of images, which gives insight into the “making of” - into the way in which EOOS approaches the design process. It shows references, links, drawings, research material, and finished products. In part two, EOOS assumes the form of first-person narrator to report on selected designs, backgrounds, and details of their histories. Part three documents in chronological order all the EOOS products that have gone into production, as well as projects and design experiments conceived purely by and for EOOS.

Park Books Carlo Mollino: Architect and Storyteller
Book SynopsisToday, Italian architect and designer Carlo Mollino (1905-73) is known chiefly for his furniture designs. He is famous also for his erotic polaroid photography of the 1960s, which has been subject of many exhibitions and has lost nothing of its great appeal to the fashion world today. Much less attention has so far been given to Mollino's architecture, and a comprehensive critical study of his work in this field has been lacking. Yet his built work, although relatively small, constitutes a seminal contribution to modernism that is uniquely marked by a strong relationship with Surrealism. Based on years of research and drawing on rich archival material as well as on Mollino's own writings, this new book is the overdue tribute to an extraordinary personality in 20th-century architecture. It features an exemplary selection of his key designs, both built and unrealised, lavishly illustrated with images and reproductions of previously unpublished plans, drawings, and documents. Rounded out with scholarly essays by expert authors, this is a long-awaited addition to the library of architecture lovers, professionals, and scholars.

Hatje Cantz Monobloc
Book SynopsisWhat began as a spontaneous enthusiasm for a photo turned out to be a long-lasting fascination with one of the world's best-selling products: the Monobloc, as it is known in specialist circles. It's the simple plastic chair that exists all over the world, as director Hauke Wendler discovered during his research trip. In November 2021, a documentary film will be released in cinemas, which is about this chair and its countless contexts. Hauke Wendler sees the piece of furniture, which is made from a single cast – hence the name – as a stand-in for stories, anecdotes and snapshots. Although the Monobloc is never the centre of attention, it is always a supporting actor and somehow "present" on all five continents the director has travelled to. The piece of furniture, of which there are supposed to be a billion copies, is as universal as hardly any other object. The photobook "Monobloc", which traces Hauke Wendler's journey alongside the documentary film, is a declaration of love for the world's most famous plastic chair.

Book SynopsisIn 1956, TIME magazine called him one of the defining “form-givers of the 20th century.” Today, Marcel Breuer (1902–1981) remains a locus classicus of modernism for architects and designers alike. As a Bauhaus pioneer, even his earliest work was marked by a material restraint; the balance of texture, color, and shape; and a symbiosis of local and global, big and small, rough and smooth. In this essential introductory monograph, we survey Breuer’s complete career through some of his most influential projects and ideas, from his landmark tubular furniture to the MoMA Research House to his innovation of “binuclear” housing, splitting living and sleeping areas into separate wings. Along the way, we follow Hungarian-born Breuer’s journey to international acclaim, with featured projects from Germany, France, England, Switzerland, and across the United States contributing to his global status as a modernist maestro.

Book SynopsisThe tubular steel design of furniture designer Marcel Breuer (1902–1981) is considered an outstanding design style of the 20th-century. Yet widely unknown is the development of the first tubular steel prototype to its early series production. Breuer’s fellow compatriot Kálmán Lengyel (1900–1945), to whom this comprehensive publication is dedicated, played a significant role in this. In 1927, they founded the company Standard Möbel together, in order to organise the series production and distribution of tubular steel furniture. The development of the company and the work of Breuer, Lengyel, and the later director Anton Lorenz are depicted here in-depth with previously unpublished archive material. As a prominent furniture designer and architect, Lengyel also founded his own furniture brand, Ka-Le-Möbel, and worked as an interior designer in Paris, as well as constructed buildings in Berlin, Szeged, and Budapest. This publication expands our knowledge about the early models and highlights the life and work of the protagonists of the tubular steel revolution! Text in German.

Vitra Design Museum Typecasting: An Assembly of Iconic, Forgotten and
Book Synopsis An Assembly of Iconic, Forgotten and New Vitra Characters During Milan’s Design Week 2018, the Vitra exhibition »Typecasting,« curated by Robert Stadler, presented 200 objects in the former sports hall La Pelota in the city’s Brera district. In addition to generous photographic documentation of the event, this eponymous publication , designed by Zak Group, critically investigates how design evolves under the influ ence of social media. By presenting the objects as characters, »Typecasting« is as much about furniture as it is about ourselves. Whereas furniture’s practical function is a given, its representational role has dramatically evolved: furniture and objects become props for self-staging on social media and online.

Vitra Design Museum Plastic: Remaking Our World: Remaking Our World
Book SynopsisPlastic has shaped our daily lives like no other material. Originally associated with convenience, progress, even revolution, today plastic seems to have lost its utopian appeal. Plastic is everywhere, yet most conspicuous as waste and as a key factor in the global environmental crisis. This book examines the success story of plastic in the twentieth century and at the same time presents the different discourses on how we should manage the waste the material produces and also find solutions that take into account its entire life cycle in the future. Mark Miodownik, Susan Freinkel, and Nanjala Nyabola each contribute an essay that sheds light on the history of plastics from 1850 to today. A material-rich visual chronology illustrates how consumers’ perception of plastics has changed over the decades. Brief descriptions of a selection of 50 objects examine the importance of plastics for material culture. Reprints of fundamental texts about the history of plastics—for example by Alexander Parkes and Roland Barthes—provide a context from the history of ideas. The book reflects the current discourse and state of research on plastic with numerous individual interviews and panel discussions that were held with designers, representatives from industry, researchers, and environmental activists. Underpinning these conversations are comprehensive data visualizations on plastic production and consumption, recycling.
