ACC Art Books Gallé Furniture
Book SynopsisEmille Gallé was one of the great names of the Art Nouveau movement in France, and founder of the famous École de Nancy. A polymath and committed social activist, he was best known for his glasswork and faience. Furniture became his third discipline after experimenting with the manufacture of wooden bases on which he could mount his glass vases. Following the French tradition of furniture decoration known as marqueterie, his work is characterised by its meticulous decorative veneers, stained with subtle organic dyes; and panels inlaid with stunningly intricate country scenes and flowers. This important book outlines all of Galle's major works of furniture, from the pieces uniques that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed between 1889 and 1904 at the annual Paris Salons and two World Expositions. The recent emergence of many of his objets de luxe enables the reader to understand many of his pieces for the first time. Written by Decorative Arts specialist Alastair Duncan, Gallé Furniture documents the history of Gallé's furniture production from his favourite motifs to the ways in which he used furniture design to express his social and political ideals. Duncan includes an encyclopedic range of models created in the Gallé Workshops both during and after his lifetime. Beautifully illustrated, and containing translations of Gallé's 'Notes to the Juries' of the World Expositions, this stunning publication will leave the reader captivated by this remarkable expression of the new art that changed the European aesthetic forever. Book SynopsisThis first major monograph on cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener traces his life and career, bringing new insights into his business practice, designs and construction techniques. Jean-Henri Riesener (1734–1806) was one of the greatest French cabinetmakers of all time. From humble beginnings as a German immigrant in Paris, he found fame through the delivery of a magnificent roll-top desk to Louis XV in 1769. He went on to become Marie-Antoinette’s favourite cabinetmaker, supplying the queen and the court of Louis XVI with sumptuous furniture of superb quality. Renowned for his exquisite marquetry and refined designs, his pieces were ornamented with spectacular gilt-bronze mounts made by some of the greatest metalworkers in Paris. In the nineteenth century, Riesener’s name became associated with the very best of Louis XVI-period French furniture. His pieces continue to be highly sought after and are found in major museums worldwide. Based on the extensive collections of Riesener furniture in the Wallace Collection, Waddesdon Manor and the Royal Collection, the authors examine the objects and their history, and highlight the changing tastes of the nineteenth-century collectors who acquired so many former French royal pieces. Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Fringe, Frog and Tassel: The Art of the
Book SynopsisLavishly illustrated with new photography, Fringe, Frog and Tassel is the first survey of the history, design and use of trimmings in the historic interiors of Britain and Ireland. Trimmings are often overlooked as mere details of a furnished interior. However, in the past they were seen as vital and costly elements in the decoration of a room. They were used not only on curtains and beds but also on wall hangings, upholstered seat furniture and cushions, providing a visual feast for the eye with their colour and intricate detail. Sometimes more expensive than the rich fabrics they enhanced, trimmings are often the only surviving evidence of a lost decorative scheme, reapplied to replacement textiles or found as fragments in the attic. This book, the first of its kind, traces their history in Britain and Ireland from 1320 to 1970, examining the design and usage of tassels, fringe, braid (woven lace), gimp and cord and their dependence on French fashion. The substantial text links surviving items in historic houses and museums to written evidence, paintings, drawings and other primary sources to provide a firm framework for dating pieces of less-certain provenance. The importance of the ‘laceman’, the maker of these trimmings, is also examined within an economic and social context, together with the relationship to the upholsterer and interior decorator in the creation of a fashionable room.Trade Reviewan extraordinary work of dedicated scholarship … this book is an essential one for the library of anyone with a serious interest in country-house decoration. -- Jeremy Musson * Country Life *Lavishly illustrated, with fascinating tales … [Westman] paints a vivid picture of how trimmings evolved throughout different ages and styles. * The English Home *…a triumph of research, textual and visual, with a sustained attention to detail. It will prove invaluable to a wide readership, including economic and social historians, historians of taste and interior decoration (not only of furniture and upholstery), curators and those engaged in historic reconstructions, as well as designers and decorators seeking inspiration. Does it make any sense to work with hand tools when machines can do the same job faster, and in many cases better? What visual richness do we lose by embracing a mass-produced world? The Nature and Art of Workmanship explores the meaning of skill and its relationship to design and manufacture. Cutting through a century of fuzzy thinking, David Pye proposes a new theory of making based on the concepts of ''workmanship of risk'' and ''workmanship of certainty''. Yale University Press A Suite for Piano AlmaTadema and a Gilded Age
Book SynopsisDuring the 19th century, New York City's grand mansions on Fifth and Madison Avenues boasted sumptuous interiors, often with each room decorated in a different historic style. Financier, art collector, and philanthropist Henry Gurdon Marquand famously commissioned eminent British painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (18361912) to create the Greco-Pompeian music room for his home. This beautiful publication documents and examines the celebrated design, which included an elaborately decorated Steinway grand piano, a large suite of matching furniture, and an embroidery scheme for the upholstery and coordinated curtains. Alma-Tadema secured Frederic Leighton to create a major painting for the room's ceiling and Sir Edward Poynter to paint the piano's fallboard. One of Alma-Tadema's most famous paintings, A Reading from Homer, was painted for this room. For the first time since Marquand's death in 1902, the contents of this exceptional room have been brought together and considered in light of Trade Review“Minutely researched and generously illustrated publication.” —Charlotte Gere, The Burlington Magazine

Silvana Mario Bellini. Italian Beauty
Book SynopsisThe volume, with a foreword by Germano Celant and numerous critical contributions, retraces the work of Milanese architect Mario Bellini in a sweeping overview spanning almost 60 years of design, architecture, exhibition design and more besides. The search for beauty must be relentless. But it cannot be the sole aim of the architect, who should unfailingly perceive the need for dialogue: with humankind, with the city, with the landscape, between cultures, religions, etc. This is a tribute to the remarkable, multi-faceted work of an Italian designer who has achieved all manner of success on both the small scale (eight Compasso d'Oro awards, and objects and furnishings that have become icons in homes and offices around the world, often anticipating or revolutionising tastes and styles), and on the large scale (conference centres, trade fair venues and museums from Japan to the USA, Germany and Australia and, in 2012, the Department of Islamic Art - a golden wave for the most prestigious museum in the world, the Louvre in Paris). Text in English and Italian.

Silvana Arredoluce: Selected Works 1943-1987
Book Synopsishe book tells the story of Arredoluce. The company produced lamps and furnishing accessories which, in the post-war industrial boom, helped to write the history of Made in Italy . Arredoluce was born in 1943 in Monza, and was heavily influenced by the entrepreneur and designer Angelo Lelii. Arredoluce's curiosity for innovations from abroad, combined with a love for traditional materials - above all, glass - and a maniacal attention to detail marked the production line of the company, producing modern and sought-after specimens. Arredoluce is best remembered for his numerous participations at the Triennale di Milano, his quotes on Domus, and collaborations with designers such as Gio Ponti and Ettore Sottsass Jr. He also enjoyed great success abroad, with orders from luxury hotels the world over. The company, however, underwent generational changes, and this combined with the new economic scenarios, led to its closure in the 1990s. This volume offers an important contribution to perpetuating the name of this glorious company, and ensuring it has its rightful place in the history of Italian industry. Text in English and Italian.

Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Industry and Ingenuity: The Partnership of
Book SynopsisThe first comprehensive study of William Ince and John Mayhew’s famous eighteenth-century cabinetmaking partnership, complemented by high-quality photographs of their work. The partnership of William Ince (1737–1804) and John Mayhew (1736–1811) ran from 1758 to 1804, and was one of the most enduring and well-connected collaborations in Georgian London’s tight-knit cabinetmaking community. The partners’ clientele was probably larger, and their work was arguably more influential over a longer period, than most other leading metropolitan makers – perhaps even than that of their older contemporary, the celebrated Thomas Chippendale. Despite their considerable output and an impressive tally of clients and commissions, much of Ince and Mayhew’s work has remained unidentified until recent times. The authors’ substantial research in private family archives, county record offices and bank archives has allowed them to uncover much new evidence about the business and its influence within cabinetmaking circles. In Industry and Ingenuity, the results of these new investigations are presented alongside an impressive selection of more than 500 colourful, vibrant photographs of Ince and Mayhew’s works, many previously unpublished, which together emphasise the partnership’s proper position in the pantheon of great eighteenth-century cabinetmakers.Trade ReviewThis handsome and magisterial work, the distilled harvest of forty years’ research, presents a comprehensive account of the great neo-classical cabinetmaking partnership of William Ince and John Mayhew. They have indeed been accorded their rightful place alongside Chippendale, an achievement to celebrate. -- Simon Swynfen Jervis, President of the Furniture History SocietyThis welcome and beautiful book restores Ince and Mayhew, Georgian English furniture makers, to the pantheon of leading British designers and craftsmen and retrieves them from ‘historical oblivion’. * Country Life *This book, so long awaited, is no disappointment. It has been a prodigious undertaking and has brought into clear light the full extent of the creativity of this leading firm. * Furniture History Society *This splendid book is a welcome addition to the corpus of scholarly publications on English furniture makers of the 18th century… It is a truly impressive achievement. * The Georgian *Table of ContentsPreface PART ONE: THE BUSINESS Apprenticeship and Partnership Premises and Family Role of the Partners The Universal System of Houshold Furniture Branches of the Business Workshop Management Accounting and Finance Clientele Relationship with Architects 'House Style' and Stylistic Development Dissolution of the Partnership The Suit in Chancery PART TWO: COMMISSIONS Documented Commissions Possible Commissions PART THREE: ILLUSTRATIONS Select Bibliography (with Abbreviations) Photographic Credits Acknowledgements Index

Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd Re-issue, Re-imagine, Re-make: Appropriation in
Book SynopsisIn recent years, there has been a great deal of interest in ‘design classics’, both in their increased availability and affordability through re-issues, and in their widespread re-interpretation by contemporary designers and artists. Focusing on chairs, this book examines this significant aspect of contemporary design practice. It does so, not only in terms of works by well-known designers, but also relative to ubiquitous designs such as the monobloc, Thonet number 14, and Ming chairs. These varied examples of re-imagining and re-working are examined from an international perspective as designers and artists across the globe seek to bring new formal, material, and narrative interpretations to these iconic designs. Renewed interest in do-it-yourself, together with the growth of hacking, open-source design and digital fabrication, have all contributed to an expansion of the concepts of re-imagine and re-make in the new millennium. Embraced by professionals, amateurs and companies alike, these developments further attest to the diverse practice of re-interpretation in contemporary design. Bringing together key examples of the re-issuing, re-imagining and re-making of design icons, the book draws on observations from designers, artists and manufacturers in order to understand the varied motivations behind these activities. It places the works within their historical and cultural context, and considers the boundaries between art and design. Further, the book interrogates the issues of authenticity and authorship and the ethical and legal rights to copy and to alter iconic objects that are raised by these re-interpretations.Trade Review'Innovative in its approach, with a text that gives the reader new ways of understanding and appreciating contemporary furniture' – Decorative Arts SocietyTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. Editions Norma Designers and Creators of the '80s - '90s:
Book SynopsisIn line with the works on decorators of the 1940s, '50s, '60s, and '70s, this book plunges us into the world of '80s and '90s. These have witnessed unprecedented experiments in the world of design and architecture. Composed of a rich introduction which gives a synoptic vision and 38 monographs that describe its many faces, this book makes and exceptionally creative period intelligible, and reveals through an abundant iconography, often unpublished, its formidable aesthetic richness. A new generation of designers stands out; among them Shiro Kuramata, Philippe Starck, Ron Arad, Bob Wilson, Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti. All regenerate creation by refusing the elitism of their predecessors and by favouring the use of new materials. Some turn to recovery, such as the Creative Salvage group, and offer inventive and provocative furniture thanks to welding and assembly. Others, gathered in Italy around Ettore Sottsass and Memphis, combine unexpected colours and patterns to the playful use of plastic laminate. Sliding until the end of the '90s, the achievements presented in this book mark the desire for a dialogue between artistic references with a new relationship to the industrial aspect, at the dawn of the 21st century and its technological innovations. Text in English and French.
