Demeter Press Doulas and Intimate Labour: Boundaries, Bodies
Book SynopsisScholars turn to reproduction for its ability to illuminate the practices involved with negotiating personhood for the unborn, the newborn, and the already-existing family members, community members, and the nation. The scholarship in this volume draws attention to doula work as intimate and relational while highlighting the way boundaries are created, maintained, challenged, and transformed. Intimate labour as a theoretical construct provides a way to think about the kind of care doulas offer women across the reproductive spectrum. Doulas negotiate boundaries and often blur the divisions between communities and across public and private spheres in their practice of intimate labour. This book weaves together three main threads: doulas and mothers, doulas and their community, and finally, doulas and institutions. The lived experience of doulas illustrates the interlacing relationships among all three of these threads. The essays in this collection offer a unique perspective on doulas by bringing together voices that represent the full spectrum of doula work, including the viewpoints of birth, postpartum, abortion, community based, adoption, prison, and radical doulas. We privilege this broad representation of doula experiences to emphasize the importance of a multi-vocal framing of the doula experience. As doulas move between worlds and learn to live in liminal spaces, they occupy space that allows them to generate new cultural narratives about birthing bodies.

Mandala Publishing Group The Bhagavad Gita: A Short Course
Book SynopsisIn a lucid, chapter-by-chapter analysis, Hindu Studies scholar Nicholas Sutton sets out a guide to the philosophy, religious context, and contemporary significance of the Bhagavad Gita. An authoritative yet accessible introduction to this sacred classic, Sutton’s book will be of interest to all students of the Gita, both new and experienced.Forming a climactic moment in the ancient Indian epic the Mahabharata, the Bhagavad Gita is one of the most celebrated texts in the Hindu world. Assuming the form of a dialogue between the princely warrior Arjuna and his divine charioteer Krsna spoken on the brink of a great war, the Gita addresses many themes that are central to Hinduism, including action in the world, spiritual knowledge, devotion, liberation, and the nature of God. Nicholas Sutton’s The Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation and Study Guide presents the principal ideas pursued in the teachings of this classic Hindu scripture. With scholarly rigour, yet always accessible and sensitive to the lived tradition, the book unpacks the meaning of key Sanskrit terms and makes ample use of three influential traditional commentaries on the Gita, namely those of Samkaracarya, Ramanujacarya, and Madhvacarya. It also reflects on the contemporary significance of the Gita’s teachings and how they can be of relevance to the modern world. Sutton’s book will be of interest to all students of the Bhagavad Gita. OXFORD CENTRE SERIES: The Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies Publishing Series offers authoritative yet accessible introductions to a wide range of subjects in Hindu Studies. Each book in the series aims to present its subject matter in a form that is engaging and readily comprehensible to persons of all backgrounds - academic or otherwise - without compromising scholarly rigour. The series thus bridges the divide between academic and popular writing by preserving and utilising the best elements of both. The Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation and Study Guide joins other accessible texts on Hindu Studies authored by expert scholars, including Understanding the Mahabharata; The Hindu Temple and Its Sacred Landscape; and Women in the Hindu World. EXPERT AUTHOR: Nicholas Sutton is the Director of the Continuing Education Department of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, an academy for the study of Hindu cultures, societies, philosophies, religions, and languages. He received his PhD from Lancaster University, writing his doctoral dissertation on the Mahabharata, and currently writes and tutors online courses on Hindu religious traditions. EDUCATION AID: This book serves as a comprehensive resource for both classwork and independent study of Hinduism. With the integration of discussion questions, suggested further readings, and glossary of Sanskrit terms, The Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation and Study Guide offers an accessible introduction to this enduring Sanskrit epic.

North Atlantic Books,U.S. The Resonance Effect: How Frequency Specific
Book SynopsisThe Resonance Effect is both the author''s story of her inspirational journey of having the courage to find her true calling and an account of the development of a remarkable newly rediscovered treatment, frequency specific microcurrent (FSM), that takes advantage of the body''s ability to respond to frequencies in order to heal a number of chronic conditions. Carolyn McMakin, a chiropractor specializing in fibromyalgia and myofascial pain, describes her experience using a two-channel microcurrent device that has achieved astounding results that have changed medicine and created new possibilities for suffering patients over the past twenty years. Nerve pain, fibromyalgia, diabetic neuropathies, muscle pain, athletic performance, injury repair, joint pain, low back pain, neck pain, kidney stone pain, the kidney stones themselves, liver disease, diabetic wounds, brain and spinal cord injuries, PTSD, depression, shingles, asthma, ovarian cysts, abdominal adhesions, and scarring all respond to specific frequencies. McMakin explains that results are predictable, reproducible, and teachable?all without side effects?offering hope and healing to millions of people.McMakin tells the story of how thousands of patients with conditions that did not respond to other medical therapies recovered from pain and disability through the non-invasive treatment that she developed. For example, asthma resolves with specific frequencies that remove inflammation, allergy reaction, and spasm from the bronchi. One frequency combination eliminates shingles pain in minutes and stops the shingles attack with a single three-hour treatment. Since 2005, a series of frequencies has been used to treat hundreds of PTSD patients. Post-surgical patients use FSM to reduce pain, prevent bruising, and increase healing. NFL, NHL, and Olympic athletes use it to heal injuries and improve performance. McMakin includes case histories that illustrate the efficacy of the treatment and shares the specific frequencies that each condition requires so that patients direct their own treatments.

Skyhorse Publishing Imagine You Are An Aluminum Atom: Discussions
Book SynopsisJoin "Mr. Aluminum," a scientist who has made the study of aluminum his life's work, on a journey of discovery, reflection, and the science of aluminum. Professor Christopher Exley is a firm believer that science is only useful when it is properly communicated. Scientific papers are difficult vehicles for the wider communication of science and thus he has always endeavored to tell the story of his scientific research as widely as possible through myriad blogs, presentations, and interviews. Through a series of easy-reading entries written for non-scientists, Exley will educate readers about his lifelong scientific passion: aluminum. In scientific circles, aluminum—in relation to human health specifically—has gone the way of the dinosaurs (though, unlike dinosaurs, there has not yet been a popular revival!). Yet aluminum is also the greatest untold story of science. But why do we all need to know a little bit more about aluminum? Do we need a self-help guide for living in what Exley has coined "The Aluminum Age"? What is it about aluminum that makes it different? What about iron, copper, or any of the so-called "heavy metals," like mercury, cadmium, or lead? Why must we pay particular attention to aluminum? Because its bio-geochemistry, its natural history, raises two red flags immediately and simultaneously. These two danger signals are easily missed by all of us and easily dismissed by those whose interests are conflicted by aluminum’s omnipresence in human life and consequently, are purposely blind to its danger signals. First, aluminum, in all of its myriad forms, is super abundant; it is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon) of the Earth’s crust. Second, aluminum is super reactive; it is both chemically and biologically reactive. However, these two red flags identify a paradox, as the abundant and biologically reactive aluminum has no biological function either in any organism today nor in any extinct biota from the evolutionary past. This means in practical terms that when we encounter aluminum in our everyday lives, our bodies only see aluminum as an impostor, something foreign, and something for which we have not been prepared through biochemical evolution. This in turn means that all of our encounters with aluminium are adventitious, random, and chaotic. And potentially dangerous. Imagine You Are An Aluminum Atom: Discussions With "Mr. Aluminum" examines the science of aluminum and human health and makes them understandable to all. Within the science you will find personal recollections of events, as well as opinions and reflections upon how the politics of aluminum have influenced and interfered with doing and reporting the science. It is at once both a personal recollection of Exley's life in aluminum research and a guide on the dangers of the constant exposure to aluminum we as humans face during this "Aluminum Age." It will inform, it will provide the means to question the science, and it will, if the reader is prepared to participate, answer those frequently asked questions on aluminum and human health.

North Atlantic Books,U.S. Renegade Beauty: Reveal and Revive Your Natural
Book Synopsis"Nadine Artemis invites us to rethink conventional notions of beauty and wellness, to abandon established regimes and commercial products, and to embrace "renegade" beauty--a practice of doing less and allowing the elements and the life force of Nature to revive the body, skin, and soul so that the natural radiance of our own beauty can shine through. This engaging book explains how our ancestors lived deeply rooted in and reliant on nature, though now we have lost our connection with the elements that once sustained us. The author takes us on a trip to the not too distant past when our lives were integrated with nature, which furnished our health and beauty. She exposes the philosophy that caused this shift and examines why and when we withdrew from thenatural world around us, and the devastating health, emotional, and cultural problems that resulted. Along the way, she reviews historical definitions of beauty from ancient Egypt to Plato, the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods, and the Golden Mean.Anyone stuck in perpetual loops of new products, facials, and dermatologist appointments will find answers as Artemis introduces the energizing elements of sun, fresh air, water, the earth, and plants. She invites readers to ditch their regimes and simplify their routines as she leads us on a joyful journey of cellular rejuvenation. Tackling common beauty complaints, she offers practical botanical, microbial, and dietary suggestions to rejuvenate the cells, reenergize health, and allow beauty to bloom. She draws on current nutrition research to advise us about which foods are health sustaining and which should be avoided. As we shift toward chemical free and environmentally safe self-care products, this book is a comprehensive guide for anyone who wants to simplify their self-care routine, discover their own radiant beauty, and take their health into their own hands"--
