Taylor & Francis Ltd Art Exhibition and Erasure in Nazi Vienna
Book SynopsisThis book examines three exhibitions of contemporary art held at the Vienna Künstlerhaus during the period of National Socialist rule and shows how each attempted to culturally erase elements anathema to Nazi ideology: the City, the Jewess and fin-de-siècle Vienna. Each of the exhibits was large scale and ambitious, part of a broader attempt to situate Vienna as the cultural capital of the Reich, and each aimed to reshape cultural memory and rewrite history. Applying illuminating theories on memory studies, collective and public memory, and notions of memoricide, this is the first book in English to focus on visual culture in the period when Austria was erased as a nation and incorporated into the Third Reich as Ostmark. The organization, content and publications surrounding these three exhibits are explored in depth and set against the larger political changes and dangerous ideologies they reflect. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, museuTable of Contents1. Introduction: Repression, Revision and the History of Art in Nazi Vienna 2. Cambridge University Press The Bewick Collector A Descriptive Catalogue Of The Works Of Thomas And John Bewick Volume 1 Cambridge Library Collection Art and Architecture
Book SynopsisThe names of Thomas Bewick (1753â1828) and his brother John (1760â1795) are synonymous with beautiful, delicate and accurate woodcuts of the natural world. Their instantly recognisable style was to influence book illustration well into the nineteenth century. The antiquary and print collector Thomas Hugo (1820â76), best known as a collector of Bewick woodcuts, first published this two-volume catalogue of his extensive collection in 1866â8. It has since emerged that many of the items sourced from printers' offices and booksellers across the country - including Thomas Bewick's own publisher, Emerson Charnley - cannot be authenticated as the Bewicks' work. The collection was nonetheless a remarkable assemblage of valuable materials, including uncut first editions, woodblocks, handbills and broadsides (all regrettably dispersed after Hugo's death) which might otherwise have been lost. Lavishly illustrated throughout, Volume 1 comprises the catalogue, which includes an appendix of Bewick poTable of ContentsPreface; List of cuts in the volume; Books and pamphlets; Proofs, etc., of the cuts in the History of Quadrupeds; Proofs, etc., of the cuts in the History of British Birds; Proofs, etc., of the cuts in Aesop's Fables; Proofs, etc., of the cuts in miscellaneous books and pamphlets; Prospectuses, proofs, etc., of the cuts for the intended History of British Fishes; Book-plates, etc.; Cuts for societies, companies, clubs, etc.; Cuts for exhibitions, etc.; Racing cuts; Shop cards; Invoice heads; Tradesmen's newspaper cuts; Bar bills; Coal certificate; Plans; The Royal Arms; Arms of Newcastle; Newspaper cuts; Broadsides, carols, etc.; The Chillingham Wild Bull; Bewick's lithograph; Miscellaneous cuts; Waiting for death; Drawings; Wood blocks; Additions; Appendix; Index to books and pamphlets.

Book SynopsisTrade Review“An illustrated tribute to Maira Kalman’s late mother, this book deconstructs the life and spirit of Sara Berman through items in her meticulously kept closet.” — Publishers Weekly “The installation of her small closet—garments and linens folded with tender precision, a potato grater, a bottle of Chanel No. 19—is a shrine to humility and intention.” — The New Yorker “A reflection on her experiences and a study of the value (monetary and not) of the things we keep.” — Vogue “A new way of looking at rooms and possessions and women’s history.” — Amelia Peck, curator of American decorative arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art “Sara Berman’s Closet” is like a living Maira Kalman painting: It’s filled with poetic details and her signature elements of irreverent humor and warmth.” — T Magazine “An unexpected meditation on modern city life: a modest closet from a studio apartment in the West Village, filled with the curious, lovely and very particular personal effects of Sara Berman, a Belarussian and Israeli émigré who was the mother of Maira Kalman, the irreverent artist, book author and illustrator.” — New York Times

MIT Press Ltd The Curatorial Conundrum What to Study What to
Book SynopsisThe future of curatorial practice: how education, research, and institutions can adapt to the expansion of the curatorial field.Today curators are sometimes more famous than the artists whose work they curate, and curatorship involves more than choosing objects for an exhibition. The expansion of the curatorial field in recent decades has raised questions about exhibition-making itself and the politics of production, display, and distribution. The Curatorial Conundrum looks at the burgeoning field of curatorship and tries to imagine its future. Indeed, practitioners and theorists consider a variety of futures: the future of curatorial education; the future of curatorial research; the future of curatorial and artistic practice; and the institutions that will make these other futures possible. The contributors examine the proliferation of graduate programs in curatorial studies over the last twenty years, and consider what can be taught without giving up what is pr

MIT Press Ltd How Institutions Think Between Contemporary Art
Book SynopsisReflections on how institutions inform art, curatorial, educational, and research practices while they shape the world around us.Contemporary art and curatorial work, and the institutions that house them, have often been centers of power, hierarchy, control, value, and discipline. Even the most progressive among them face the dilemma of existing as institutionalized anti-institutions. This anthology-taking its title from Mary Douglas's 1986 book, How Institutions Think-reconsiders the practices, habits, models, and rhetoric of the institution and the anti-institution in contemporary art and curating. Contributors reflect upon how institutions inform art, curatorial, educational, and research practices as much as they shape the world around us. They consider the institution as an object ofienquiry across many disciplines, including political theory, organizational science, and sociology.Bringing together an international and multidisciplinary group of writers,

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Colorado Quilting
Book SynopsisThis book is the culmination of more than 125 years of tradition and countless Documentation Days, during which quilting council members record the block technique, age, batting, backing, and color of each quilt their fellow quilters trust them to preserve. Thirteen chapters explore important historical quilting moments, traditional and modern quilting themes, and the beginnings of the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum and the Quilter''s Newsletter magazine. Different council members researched, photographed, and recorded the most significant events, memories, quilters, and quilts that have influenced the progress of quilting in Colorado. Early Coloradans picked their own cotton, saved every scrap of used fabric, and made quilts from scratch to support their families and for therapy as they recovered from serious injuries and illnesses. Many of these sacred stitches are still works in progress and continue to illustrate what''s important to these dedicated craftspeople.
